    Ivy Insights

The Talking Apes TV: A Planet of the Apes Podcast is an excellent podcast that delves into the world of the Planet of the Apes franchise, specifically focusing on the often overlooked TV series. As a fan of the franchise since childhood, I was thrilled to find a podcast that not only discusses the TV series in great detail but also explores other aspects of the franchise like books and interviews with key figures.

One of the best aspects of this podcast is how well researched and insightful it is. The hosts, Richard and Mark, clearly have a deep knowledge and appreciation for all things Planet of the Apes. They provide in-depth analysis of each episode of the TV series, discussing themes, character development, and behind-the-scenes information. It's evident that they have put a lot of time and effort into their research, making each episode informative and engaging for fans.

Another great aspect of this podcast is the nostalgia factor. Listening to Richard and Mark talk about their memories of watching the TV series as kids brings back fond memories for me as well. They have a genuine love for this franchise, which comes through in their discussions and makes it feel like you're listening to friends discuss something you're passionate about.

However, one potential downside to this podcast is that it may not appeal to those who are not already fans or familiar with the Planet of the Apes franchise. While Richard and Mark do provide some context and background information, there are times when they assume a certain level of knowledge from their audience. This could be confusing or uninteresting for those who are not already invested in this world.

In conclusion, The Talking Apes TV: A Planet of the Apes Podcast is a must-listen for any fan of the Planet of the Apes franchise. With its well-researched topics, nostalgic discussions, and passionate hosts, it offers an enjoyable deep dive into this beloved series. Whether you're a long-time fan or new to the franchise, this podcast is a great way to explore the world of Planet of the Apes and gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for it.

In this 73rd episode we break down the first issue of the most recent apes comic series, Beware the Planet of the Apes. This 2024 Marvel Comics series tells a prequel story in a 4 issue miniseries set just before the events of the 1968 film.    Nova takes center stage in a tale that disregards all previous tie-in material that served as prequels to the first movie such as Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes and Death of the Planet of the Apes along with the entirety of the BOOM! Studios era.   This is a new adventure set in the classic continuity of the original PLANET OF THE APES films! In a hostile world run by aggressive gorillas; scientists Cornelius and Zira are the only apes alive who see value in the mute human race - but even they know human capabilities have severe limits.    So when Zira's nephew Lucius goes missing, it is with great trepidation that they turn to a human ally - a young woman who will someday earn the name "Nova"!    But the search for Lucius brings them all deeper into the Forbidden Zone - which is forbidden for a reason. What never-before-seen dangers await them in the ruins? The citizens of Ape City believed they were alone on this planet, but a world of violence lies beyond their borders!   For best enjoyment, watch the video version of this episode to see all the comic pages and panels.   Now, Go Ape!   Show Links:       We recommend watching the YouTube version above! Talking Apes wraps up 2024 in a big fun way! Kevin (Proximus Caesar) Durand and Bobby (Cornelius) Porter leave video messages. We tally up the final box office results of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes as well as go over the recent sequel news.     We had to talk about South Carolina's inadvertent live production of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. How many of us cheered when primates escaped from a research facility and were “just being goofy monkeys jumping back and forth playing with each other” (actual quote from CBS News). Like us, did you hope the 43 escaped monkeys were going to take over humanity?    We read more of your comments on the Planet of the Apes TV series and Talking Apes anniversaries. And there is still more to go.     How many saw Rick Baker's classic Apes display set up in his yard for Trick or Treaters on Halloween night? Unfortunately we did not see it live but gathered lots of video and pics as well as the gruesome footage of Rick demolishing the sets the day after. (Be forewarned it is really hard to watch.)   Since we are so proud of our efforts from last year, we'll replay our melodically and on key ‘14 episodes of Planet of the Apes' to the tune of ‘12 Days of Christmas'! Join lead cast members Freya Allen, Kevin Durand, Owen Teague, and Peter Macon alongside visualization supervisor Casey Pyke, Wētā FX visual effects supervisor Erik Winquist and one of the film's editors, Dan Zimmerman, as they unveil the VFX magic behind the majestic beasts and battles in bringing director Wes Ball's vision to life.   This is the full audio recording. For those listeners with sensitive ears, a fight between a fan and the CC security broke out at about the halfway point, and there were a few curse words. The panel host quickly got things back on track and we were on our way.     I got the chance to represent Talking Apes with a question during the Q&A. They asked to keep the questions short but that wasn't going to happen since I wanted my question about easter eggs to be answered by all the panelists.    I've been to the mountain and came back with even more content. I posted the ‘Enter the Forbidden Zone' exhibit on @skywalkingpod IG account, and there's another video coming your way from that exhibit. This episode of Talking Apes is dedicated to the bright center of the Apes fan community, Angela Rushmere, who has passed away. We, along with the many Ape fans, had numerous heartfelt comments that will be read on the show.  Then in this episode we will be breaking down the 2nd unproduced Rod Serling script for the live-action Planet of the Apes TV series, Titled Episode 2. If you thought we argued last time, this will take us to UrkoTastic levels! STORY SUMMARY:  Ursus and his Security Force, which includes his 15 year old son, Zonda, head out to search for  Alan, Kovack and Galen and before long they find them.   The renegades take off and in the heat of the chase, Alan knocks Zonda unconscious. Suddenly Alan, Kovack and Galen are aided by unseen assailants and the ape soldiers are forced to retreat. These new “friends,” who are well cultured and live underground, are curious about Alan and Kovack who have befriended an animal, Galen. They want Galen, and Zonda who was brought with them, put to death until Alan demands they are put on trial to prove they are not as barbaric as the apes.  Also with this episode, Mark says his farewell due to a heavy workload and career opportunities. Since Mark is a HUGE Muppet fan we have a special segment where we find Planet of the Apes and Muppet crossovers. You probably didn’t think there were any, huh?  And Dr. Zaius has been putting in his two cents about the global pandemic as seen on Jimmy Kimmel Live! And Dana Gould’s YouTube channel. Happy Halloween Ape Fans! In this episode of Talking Apes TV we celebrate this UrkoTastic holiday with stories of how Richard's Galen costume made him cry, we try to figure out how Yummy Mummy and Fruit Brute fit into the Monster cereals, and why Vincent Price is giving out Easter seals to trick-or-treaters. We also say goodbye to our dear friend, Gary Dubin who passed away in early October. We had lots of laughs as we dove into the 'was he/was he not' the young gorilla in the original Planet of the Apes film. Whether he was or not, we were lucky enough to meet him at an apes autograph signing last year. He will be deeply missed. Then we dive into the episode Attack from the Clouds. This is the 10 entry in the Return to the Planet of the Apes series which aired November 8, 1975. In this episode we continue with the theme of giant monsters when a a flying dragon creature is seen over Ape City. Urko believes it is his stolen plane being used in a secret plot to overthrow him. The dragon creature moves on and finds a food source in humanoid-land known as New Valley and begins attacking. Meanwhile Bill and Judy go to to locate the stolen plane from a previous episode before Urko before finds it which would spell certain doom. In an effort to save their herd Bill and Judy go out and locate Urko’s stolen plane and use it to to combat the beast! We have lots of fun with this one as we see Urko spiral deeper into his own madness. Listen, enjoy, have a Happy Halloween and, GO APE! TALKING APES TV: Trail to the Unknown

Hey Hey Ape Fans! Welcome back to Talking Apes TV! We kick off this episode by looking at some awesome costume cross-overs from Star Wars Celebration Europe. These have got to be the best we've ever seen - Planet of the Star Wars! Fans dressed as vintage Apes wearing Stormtrooper, X-Wing and TIE Fighter pilot uniforms. All lead by Darth Zaius. Speaking of crossovers, Boom Comics who mashed-up Star Trek and Planet of the Apes is at it again with - Tarzan on the Planet of the Apes! We review the details as given at time of recording for this 5 issue mini-series. When war between man and ape breaks out, which side will Caesar and his brother Tarzan choose? First issue to be released 9/28/2016. "Trail to the Unknown" Synopsis (Airdate 11/1/1975) Bill, Jeff and Judy have to get the humanoids away from their home before Urko’s imminent attack. They build rafts and sail away to their new home in New Valley (as foretold in Tunnel of Fear). Meanwhile in Ape City, Dr. Zaius visits Cornelius and Zira to thank them for stealing Urko's plane (as seen in last episode ‘Screaming Wings'). By doing so, Zaius feels that Zira and Cornelious have saved simian society from Urko's dictatorship. Hungry for power, Urko has tracked the humans to their new home and plans to destroy them once and for all! We have a blast reviewing this episode since we are starting to see the bigger story. They better hurry up since there are only 4 more episodes to the series! It's always a bonus when the writers think about continuity and include Easter eggs from the films and live-action TV show. And we see Urko spiraling further into iNsaNity! During a commercial break, we hear a commercial for a toy that we're sure Urko played with as a child. Probably made him into the Apes is he today. And we hear from MEGO and their KISS collection of figures. (WARNING: Once you hear that commercial jingle, you WILL be singing it for days.) Listen, have fun, and Go APE! Hey Hey Ape Fans! Welcome back to Talking Apes TV! We kick off this episode by reviewing the past works of Return to the Planet of the Apes Animation Director, Cullen Houghtaling. Did you even know there were animated series based on Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure? Police Academy? Mork & Mindy/Laverne & Shirley/Fonz? We're so lucky to have the Internet these days. Screaming Wings Synopsis: As Bill, Jeff, and Judy head for a humanoid settlement they spot human scarecrow targets. Suddenly, a World War II-era fighter plane appears in the sky. Piloted by a gorilla, the aircraft flies toward the scarecrows and drops a net on them. Urko and his Ape army are testing the plane in preparation for planet domination. Now Bill, Jeff and Judy have to steal it if there is any hope for the humanoid race, and, to see if this plane can help them get back home. We have a blast reviewing this one since there is so much fun stuff here. And finally we're getting a story thread that will start bringing the series together. And we see the side-effects of Urko's helmet which may be on a little too tight in this episode. During a commercial break, we hear a MEGO World's Mightiest Superheroes figure commercial that would never be made today. Listen, have fun and Go APE!

Hey Hey Apes! We teased at the end of our last episode that we were going to review the episode, 'Screaming Winds' from the Return to the POTA series but we’re going to take our customary mid-series break to talk with some friends old and new. We are very excited to have become fast friends with another simian podcast. Not apes, chimpanzees or orangutans, but Monkees! On our last episode we learned of the many connections between the Planet of the Apes TV series and The Monkees TV series, and we learned this from Zilch: A Monkees Podcast. Creator and host, Ken Mills, will be joining us to talk childhood Ape stories, his passion for The Monkees and his KISS and Cheap Trick podcasts. What's an Ape connection without a new jingle? We have 2 great new Monkees/Apes jingles written by podcast composer Rob Dehlinger. If you thought 'Yabba Dabba Urko' was catchy ring-tone wait until you hear these! To hear about Ape fandom past and present from the other side of the world, we talk with Adam O'Brien. You may know Adam from the Jogcast Radio Network where he discusses all kinds of fandoms, now he brings his passion to Talking Apes TV. We give you a very rare clip from the 1974 Macy's Thanksgiving parade (thanks to Angela Rushmere) that featured Planet of the Apes. This is something you've got to hear to believe, and not in a good way. Now go Ape!

Hey Hey Ape fans! This week on Talking Apes TV, Richard makes a connection between Planet of the Apes and another one of his passions, The Monkees (how ironic!). Then we dive deep into River of Flames (aired 10/18/1975). This is the 7th episode and now the half way point in this series of only 13 episodes, 1 less than the live action series. "River Of Flames" Synopsis Krador, the Underdweller, enlists the help of Bill and Jeff to help their world from being destroyed by the suddenly-active volcano. They suspect a trap, however if it is true than Judy will be in danger. Meanwhile Galen and Zira are battling over government funds with Zauis so they don?t go to Urko and his human-hunting agenda. Ape History class begins as we go back in time to visit the Adventures on the Planet of the Apes comic book and Planet of the Apes magazine. You have to give Fox credit for trying so hard to relaunch their ape franchise again and again. Sadly this was also a short lived series that ended after 11 issues in December of 1976. This comic series features colorized reprints of the official movie adaptation of POTA and Beneath the POTA which had been originally printed in Marvel?s POTA Magazine (which ran for 29 issues from 1974-1977 - FEB). Did Mark like this episode? Did Richard like this episode? Which one gave it 29 strikes against it? How many times did they fight during their discussion? Listen and find out. Now Go Ape!

Hey Hey Ape fans! Are you ready for another fun-filled episode of Talking Apes TV? We certainly hope so! On this month's show we discuss the 6th episode from the Return to the Planet of the Apes animated series, Terror On Ice Mountain which aired on November 22, 1975 (this episode should have been called "The forever-falling hot air balloon." or "Plot-jumping of the Apes") Synopsis During an archaeological dig, Cornelius uncovers an ancient, human book called, "A Day at the Zoo." He explains to Zira that this book would be deadly to the humans if it ever fell into Urko's hands. When Bill and Jeff see the book, Jeff wants to show the high-council so that the truth of the planet will be known, but Cornelius, fearing their safety, wants to hide it on the snowy mountain of Ghar. If you're a longtime listener of Talking Apes TV you'll know what we mean when we say this is the equivalent to the 'Horse Race' episode from the live-action series. Not the best episode to watch but the best episode to tear into because of all the plot glaring plot holes. Sometimes those episodes make our show so much fun to record. Being an episode from 1975, we play commercials from that era. Who had the Evel Knievel Dragster toy? Or a portable tape recorder/player which was Dyno-Mite (wait what does that mean?) We're sure you'll have an Urkotastic time listening. Now go Ape!
