With her bewitching and beautiful novel NEVERMORE (Seagull Books, translated from French by Tess Lewis, who joins our conversation), Cécile Wajsbrot takes us on a tour of Chenobyl's Forbidden Zone, the High Line in NYC, Dresden, Paris, under the shadow of the Time Passes section of Virginia Woolf's To The Lighthouse. We talk about the challenges of writing a first-person novel about translation, the strange ways Woolf has followed Cecile throughout her careers as author & translator, and how it felt to see her novel about translating Virginia Woolf into French get translated into English. We get into her literary career, how Time Passes became a stand-in for her fascination with destruction, why she's translated Woolf's The Waves three times over thirty years (and whether the first one got her into the bad graces of the editor of Le Monde de Livres), what it was like to subvert the translator's typical role of invisibility with this novel, and the language she wishes she had. We also discuss mourning and the ways we try to keep conversation alive with those we've lost, the time I impressed the Princess of Yugoslavia by transliterating the Cyrillic on her family's jewels, and more. In this 73rd episode we break down the first issue of the most recent apes comic series, Beware the Planet of the Apes. This 2024 Marvel Comics series tells a prequel story in a 4 issue miniseries set just before the events of the 1968 film. Nova takes center stage in a tale that disregards all previous tie-in material that served as prequels to the first movie such as Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes and Death of the Planet of the Apes along with the entirety of the BOOM! Studios era. This is a new adventure set in the classic continuity of the original PLANET OF THE APES films! In a hostile world run by aggressive gorillas; scientists Cornelius and Zira are the only apes alive who see value in the mute human race - but even they know human capabilities have severe limits. So when Zira's nephew Lucius goes missing, it is with great trepidation that they turn to a human ally - a young woman who will someday earn the name "Nova"! But the search for Lucius brings them all deeper into the Forbidden Zone - which is forbidden for a reason. What never-before-seen dangers await them in the ruins? The citizens of Ape City believed they were alone on this planet, but a world of violence lies beyond their borders! We are back with a fun and revealing discussion with author Jim Beard! Jim shares his entry into the Planet of the Apes universe as a child which explains a lot about his involvement in the upcoming Apes role playing game. Whether you're a gamer or not, you will be super-pumped and ready to immerse yourself into the Forbidden Zone. Now is your chance to be the character you always wanted to see in the Apes universe. Of course right after the show was recorded and edited, the RPG was updated with the Solo Mode Unlocked feature. To read more about the update, here is the Kickstarter link. This week we take a look at an early entry into the 1980's Star Wars copycat films (and 80's 3D too!) with Starhunter Adventures in the Forbidden Zone.
It was a different time but not THAT different when Richard Elfman decided to bring the wild things he saw on stage with his equally terrifying brother, Danny Elfman's band, The Mystic Knights of Oingo Boingo and marry their showmanship with the racist cartoons of the past to create the Forbidden Zone! The story of the family Hercules (Ugh-Fudge Banana, Phil Gordon, Hyman Diamond and Virginia Rose, the only one with a SAG card) and their daughter Frenchie (Marie-Pascale Elfman) who live in a house that happens to have a doorway into the 6th dimension. When neighborhood friend, Squeez-It's sister, Renee (Matthew Bright) disappears into the portal, Frenchie decides to check it out for herself. She goes down down down and meets Queen Doris (Susan Tyrell) and her King Fausto who lock her up for different reasons, the King wants a sex slave and the Queen wants to torture her with the help of daughter, The Princess (Gisele Lindley). When her family comes looking for her, they find a world beyond comprehension where you always expect to see a skid mark and the boys are always humpin' - Forbidden Zone, this week on Doom Generation. As it's Spooky Season, Mike and Jay recorded this bonus episode: a horror-themed interview with film critic Josh Larsen, best known as the co-host of the stellar film podcast "Filmspotting." Josh and the guys discuss his latest book, Fear Not! A Christian Appreciation of Horror Movies, touching upon matters of faith while also considering the redemptive - and not-so-redemptive - aspects of the genre. Why would a devout Christian watch (and love) movies like "The Shining," "Us," and "The Blair Witch Project?" Josh answers this question while weighing in on what he believes are universal aspects behind the effectiveness and enduring popularity of horror flicks. And if all that isn't enough, the guys get up to their usual tricks by presenting Josh with one of the toughest rounds of Kick Two, Pick Two ever. Would you be able to choose only two of your four favorite horror films, throwing the other two forever into the Forbidden Zone? Can Josh?
On this week's episode of the podcast that wields films like deadly weapons, Mike and Jay bring a nuclear arsenal of big budget failures, first by tackling "Ballistic: Ecks Vs. Sever" during the main review and then tallying their bottom five Box-Office Bombs. How big of a quality-crater does the infamous Lucy Liu-Antonio Banderas actioner leave when compared to the other megaton failures the guys have suffered through? Find out by giving the show a listen, then stick around as our intrepid hosts play an inverted game of Kick-Two, Pick-Two where four terrible movies are listed and they are forced to keep two when all deserve a permanent home in the Forbidden Zone. Also, keep watching this feed as spooky season is upon us, and the guys have some excellent upcoming horror-themed shows and interviews coming up!

ENTERTAINING SHORT FILMS is a new category on the RPA Network, which features indie short films for your enjoyment! We applaud these creators! Dumont has been surviving in isolation, and living miserably in the remnants of his past. Until one day, a magical creature made entirely of light crashes outside of his bunker. This unexpected disturbance forces Dumont to make a choice, whether he will remain stuck in the safety of the past, or take the leap forward into the unknown. Dumont chooses the dangerous path of discovery and makes the pilgrimage across The Forbidden Zone to bring the creature safely home to the top of the red mountain.

As Filmjitsu Summer comes to an end, Mike delivers to Jay the cinematic C-4 explosive that is 2003's "From Justin to Kelly" starring Kelly Clarkson, thankfully in her first - and only - lead acting role. Stepping from the ashes of his lost summer watching horrendous dreck, Jay dutifully reviews this "musical romantic comedy" and manages to say some nice things, which is a bit like living through a blitzkrieg and complimenting the enemy for pretty-colored fireballs. Following the review, Mike and Jay offer their bottom five parties from movies and then play a popstar-filled game of Kick-Two, Pick-Two during which Jay is faced with one the most existential struggles of his life. Will he cast his beloved Madonna into the Forbidden Zone deleting her from history and future for all? Listen to find out that, and also what Jay has lying in wait for Mike's viewing displeasure on the next episode!

Welcome to this special Comic-Con edition of Talking Apes! This is the panel held on July 25 titled, ‘Unveiling the VFX magic: 20th Century Studios' Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” SUMMARY: Delve into the technical and human elements that created the visual effects masterpiece – Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes – with some of the best VFX talent in the business! Join lead cast members Freya Allen, Kevin Durand, Owen Teague, and Peter Macon alongside visualization supervisor Casey Pyke, Wētā FX visual effects supervisor Erik Winquist and one of the film's editors, Dan Zimmerman, as they unveil the VFX magic behind the majestic beasts and battles in bringing director Wes Ball's vision to life. This is the full audio recording. For those listeners with sensitive ears, a fight between a fan and the CC security broke out at about the halfway point, and there were a few curse words. The panel host quickly got things back on track and we were on our way. I got the chance to represent Talking Apes with a question during the Q&A. They asked to keep the questions short but that wasn't going to happen since I wanted my question about easter eggs to be answered by all the panelists. I've been to the mountain and came back with even more content. I posted the ‘Enter the Forbidden Zone' exhibit on @skywalkingpod IG account, and there's another video coming your way from that exhibit. I also posted pics on the FB group of the NECA figures and cosplayers.
What happens when fantasy meets the First World War? This month, we read 'The Warm Hands of Ghosts' by Katherine Arden, a novel which follows Canadian nurse Laura Iven as she searches for her brother behind the lines in the militarised area known as the ‘Forbidden Zone'. The plot hinges around a mysterious character called Faland, who runs an elusive hotel with no set location that men find to drink and relax In the discussion, we consider the fictional use of historical characters, whether the war began in 1917, and Chris' new scale for measuring war-related novels. Madhouse, indeed. The boys go back to the future this week to review the glorious original Planet of the Apes. Fresh after a recent viewing of the latest Apes movie (in an actual theater) our hosts were inspired to go back to the Forbidden Zone to re-watch this iconic sci-fi classic and, more importantly, take a few more shots at the Tim Burton abomination while they were at it. Inspired by spite, the boys also look at other remake-proof movies and the futile attempts Hollywood has attempted over the years. As a human, you must listen!
Jay pummels Mike with the most painful cinematic weapon he's deployed yet: the 2019, Fred Durst written-and-directed disaster, "The Fanatic." A slog of a thriller that finds John Travolta playing an autistic man named Moose who is obsessed with a mid-tier celebrity, the guys try to understand why this thing even got made and discover... a Red Box connection? After reacting to Durst's direction and Travolta's haircut, they next count down their bottom five obsessions from movies and then play one of the most random games of Kick-Two, Pick-Two ever. where two of the four titles currently "Back at the Kiosk" at Red Boxes nation-wide get tossed into the Forbidden Zone, never to be seen again. Long live physical media (except those two!)

After that some lighter fare, with some stories of the bad Biden dog, Elizabeth Warren smoking weed with Ed Markey, and an article chronicling Biden's stroke game going back to the 70's. Finally, we read the big new piece on Bari Weiss' University of Austin and its “Forbidden Courses”. PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker and musician Richard Elfman (FORBIDDEN ZONE, SHRUNKEN HEADS, MODERN VAMPIRES) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen in the ArieScope Studio to discuss his career journey. From his humble upbringing in the most unlikely of towns… to how his love for the weird and wild took him around the world… to his part in the creation of THE KNIGHTS OF OINGO BOINGO (which then morphed into the famed 80's rock band OINGO BOINGO)… to making his 1980 surreal classic FORBIDDEN ZONE… to jumping back into filmmaking after a long stint performing live music and writing for magazines… to working closely with his brother Danny Elfman as a composer on his films… to working with challenging budgets and winning over temperamental actors… to the making of his latest feature, the “Valentine Vampire” opus BLOODY BRIDGET (currently on the festival circuit)… to how he met his muse and BLOODY BRIDGET star Anastasia… Richard brings us on his fascinating 4+ decade ride through stage and screen!

Today on the 5: I wasn;tr planning to watch another bizarre low budget film so soon after Forbidden Zone, but I followed that film up with 1989's Dr. Caligari. It's just as weird, just with more color and fewer offensive elements!

Today on the 5: Completely by accident, it turns out I watched the first and last movies that writer/director Matthew Bright was involved in. On paper, Tiptoes doesn't seem like it would be a stranger film than Forbidden Zone is, but then you watch it and...wow.
Today on the 5: Over the weekend I watched a movie I've heard of for a while now, 1980s bonkers musical Forbidden Zone. After finishing one of the more off the wall movies I've seen in a bit, I thought this was probably the oddest thing that this writer likely ever did. I was wrong, but that will have to wait for tomorrow. Right now, let's talk about Frenchy and her adventures in rthe Sixth Dimension.
On this episode I talk with the super talented Richard Elfman. We talk about his new book “The Schlimazel of Sebreim” from Encyclopocalypse publications. We are also joined for a bit from the great Anastasia Elfman and we go down the rabbit hole of her new film “Bloody Bridget.” I had a killer time talking with Richard and Anastasia and I hope you enjoy this episode.https://www.encyclopocalypse.com/product/schlimazel-of-sebreim/143?cs=true&cst=custom (Link to novella)https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0253320/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk (Richard's IMDB page)https://bloodybridget.com/Synth Outro by Abraxas HornMy email and social links:Brandonlegion666@yahoo.comTwitter: Horrorwolf666Instagram: Brandonlegion666 Facebook: Horrorwolf666Website: www.horrorwolf666.com(Merchandise)https://the-horrorwolf666-podcast.creator-spring.com/
