Lee is known for practical solutions to big problems. She is the author of two books Millennials and Management The Essential Guide to Making It Work at Work and the Boomerang Principle Inspiring Lifetime Loyalty from Employees. She and her team provide companies with the tools they need to improve performance in intergenerational relationships, communication, and leadership.   In this episode, Lee talks about the changes in PR and digital marketing and how the industry has evolved from the ways we once communicated with each other to how we communicate today via social platforms. Times have changed drastically, so the importance of staying relevant is key to keeping up with technology and culture. Lee shares her thoughts about the roles each generational group has set for their standards and how this has created a conflict between what is right and what is relevant. She explains the benefits between different groups like Baby Boomer and Millenials and creates a positive and effective workplace when she brings the generations together. We get to hear some of the fumbles Lee has encountered through her journey as well as the winning touchdown moment she had while working at Sega.   We also get a glimpse into the world of San Francisco and Silicon Valley and what sustainability looks like there. Lee shares some thoughts and experiences she has had about what she's experienced in those two places. You won't want to miss that!   Having trouble finding something in your playbook that works for you? Try following these three key offensive strategies straight from Lee’s playbook: Listen loudly, make a decision and call the play, and decide if it’s working or not. Can you make it better and listen again and implement again? If yes, do it!   Keep the conversation going by sharing this episode with your friends, colleagues, and social media!   Thanks so much for listening.    Quotes   “As the Quarterback for my company, it’s really about looking long and playing short to get there.”   “You have to play really short games all the time and understand who your people are, what they're good at, and what their role can be so they can do their job to move everybody forward.”   “It’s also super important in our business, do not put all your eggs into one basket, ever.”   “How you decide what’s going to have a chance and what isn’t, is half the battle.”   “Sometimes it’s good to be up in the stands so you can see the whole field.”   Listen more loudly.”     LINKS   leecaraher.com Double Forte Millennials and Management The Essential Guide to Making It Work at Work Boomerang Principle Inspiring Lifetime Loyalty from Employees Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram       Get more out of PYP with these links: Show notes Find Your Football Newsletter Nominate a Guest for the Show We always appreciate your rating and review on iTunes!  Isn't It Time to Write Your Book Already?

Her second book: The Boomerang Principle: Inspire Lifetime Loyalty from Your Employees (even after they leave). Lee McEnany Caraher is the founder and CEO of Double Forte, a successful national public relations, content marketing and social media firm. Double Forte works with beloved consumer, technology, and wine brands. She is a highly sought-after communications expert known for her business acumen and insights (and her big laugh). She splits her time between the company's San Francisco and New York offices. Lee is also an acclaimed author and recognized expert in creating high performing, positive workplaces. She became an expert in this arena after operating her own company and leading large divisions in other companies. She started Double Forte in 2002 determined to create a culture that fully supports its talent, even when they choose to move on. After failing miserably at retaining Millennials, Double Forte went back to the beginning and created a culture where all generations thrive; as a result, turnover is low, and when employees do leave, overwhelmingly they stay loyal to the firm – sometimes even returning. With her foundational work, Lee shows leaders how to create the best possible workplace culture so their employees will stay longer than they intend, and when they do leave, advocate for the company, defining a new loyalty contract and a new model of business sustainability. http://leecaraher.com https://double-forte.com https://twitter.com/leecaraher

Lee Caraher               Is It Entitlement or Conditioning? Expectations of Millennials  Is it possible for a group of 80 million people to feel entitled, or have they been conditioned to expect certain things? They didn’t request a trophy or sticker when doing something, it was given to them as future encouragement. And it worked. As you have progressed in your leadership journey, you may have learned that ideas and thoughts need to be expressed in ways that can be understood. You wouldn’t speak French to someone who only understood Russian. As with all people, when you understand where they are coming from (or the ‘language’ they understand) you will be on the road to a successful relationship and the development of a potential star employee for your business. Lee Caraher hired her first Millennial several years ago, and on her first day of work she brought her dog and left at 3:00 to visit her mother. Lee was beside herself, yet she took the time to understand the ‘language’ and learned how to communicate in ways that could be heard. They were also ways that created a rock star employee. You've been taught to dream big, empowered to believe that you can accomplish absolutely anything. And then you get to work, and they've got you pushing paper. It's no surprise that companies struggle to retain Millennials who are uninspired and don't feel as if their work matters. The CEO of Double Forte PR & Digital Marketing, Lee Caraher is a lauded communication strategist, known for her practical solutions to difficult problems. She is a recognized expert in building high-performing intergenerational teams, and her work as a speaker and author seeks to demonstrate how businesses can shift the definition of company loyalty and embrace the qualities of different generations. Caraher gained this expertise the hard way, failing to retain newly hired Millennials at Double Forte when they entered the workforce in 2011. Unwilling to buy into the negative stereotypes associated with Millennials in the workplace, she created a culture where Millennials, Xers and Boomers could thrive together, and she shares this method in the book Millennials & Management. Caraher's next venture, The Boomerang Principle, hit bookshelves in April 2017. Today she discusses how the concept of loyalty has shifted in the current corporate climate and the five principles at the heart of her strategy to retain Millennials.   Key Interview Takeaways Articulate your company's rally cry. Millennials need to understand why you exist as a company and what they will learn from working with you. Provide context for each new project and ask for input. Address why the work is important and discuss each person's role. Establish a culture of appreciation. Teams who receive meaningful positive feedback outperform those who don't. Millennials anticipate having up to six careers. What an Xer or Boomer might see as job-hopping, Millennials see as career-building. Loyalty to a particular company is an antiquated idea. Rather than worrying about employees leaving, focus on how to make them as productive as possible while they are there. Work to inspire loyalty after an employee has moved on. The most impactful person in a recruiting situation is the former employee who posts a positive review of your company. After entrepreneur and author Lee Caraher initially failed working with young people, she decided to re-evaluate her business model. She had hired six Millennials within a short time of each other, all of which either left her company or were let go within six months. Knowing that there was more to Millennials than meets the eye, she knew she had to find out what would keep young people interested in staying with the company and how she could become part of the solution. Her current book "Millennials & Management: The Essential Guide to Making it Work at Work" is for both Millennials and those working with Millennials, a rare book format she chose so that both sides could read the material and work on the same things. If you are between 28 -45 and struggle working with or being managed by someone from the older generation, this podcast will be enlightening. Lee talks about how both Millennials and others can strive together in the workplace and effectively communicate. Learn about the 3 different sets of Millennials (29-36yrs, 23-28yrs, 16-22yrs) and how they came into the job market and through the educational system completely differently and why 67% of Millennials don't like to be called Millannials. Find out why there are different definitions  and expectations that you can either meet or offended. Lee encourages Millennials to be mature in the work place and how you can get older generations to listen to your ideas. Lee Caraher tells us how intergenerational workplaces can succeed despite the perceived great divide between Millennials and earlier generations like Boomers. Are Millennials really that different from earlier generations? People talk about intergenerational conflict today like it's something new, but it's not. Humans have always been informed by their generation (in addition to many other factors), so it's no surprise that Millennials have a different perspective of the world than the GenXers before them, and the Boomers before them, and so on. A company today could have as many as three or four different generations working together. And within the Millennial group, there are three subgroups to consider: Ages 28–35, who entered the workforce after 9/11. Ages 22–28, who entered the workforce after the economy crashed in 2008. Ages 15–21, who will enter the workforce having grown up with technology from the start, including in school.   How do these subgroups perceive themselves and the world around them? And how can people from such different perspectives get along in the workplace? Listen to this episode of Crack the Customer Code to find out. About Lee Caraher Lee Caraher literally wrote the book on Millennials in the workplace. Lee is a Boomer whose company hired their first Millennial in 2010 and realized quickly that they were in for a change. By the end of the year, they had hired six more Millennials, all of whom failed within their first three months. Lee was disturbed by this high rate of failure and tried to figure out what happened. She found that a Google search of "Millennials in the workplace" turns up over 2.5 million negative entries. As someone with her own business and a ways to go until retirement, she decided, "I cannot be negative about the generation that’s going to make my future possible. So I threw everything out and we figured it out for ourselves.” In figuring it out for her business, she also ended up helping many of her clients figure it out for theirs, which eventually led to her authoring "Millennials & Management: The Essential Guide to Making it Work at Work."   Connect with Lee: www.leecaraher.com Sponsor Message  Customer Experience is hot… but are you taking advantage of its huge potential to make your services business more prominent and profitable? On this episode of Rhodes to Success I interview Lee Caraher who is an entrepreneur and CEO with more than twenty years experience building great high producing intergenerational work teams that get a lot done and have fun at the same time. Lee is an acclaimed communications strategist known for her practical solutions to big problems. She is the founder of Double Forte and has figured out the secret to working well with millennial clients and staffers. Lee is the author of Millennials and Management: The Essential Guide to Making it Work at Work. During the podcast Jessica and Lee discuss the profile of millennials, negativity surrounding the term, and the secret to working with millennials and teams.   Main Questions Asked -       How do you define and what are the characteristics of millennials? -       Talk about your struggle with hiring millennials. -       What was the point where you figured out how to work with millennial clients and staffers? -       What is the secret to working with a different generation?   Key Lessons Learned  -       Everyone wants his or her process to be better but no one wants to have it discounted.   Profile of Millennials -       Millennials are the 15-35 year old age group also known as GenY. -       The midway point for this generation was the year 2000, which is why they are called millennials. -       Even though your age can be in a different generation your mindset can be that of a millennial.   Negativity of the Term Millennial -       The term millennial is often seen negatively and a lot of millennials don't even want to be known as such. -       Millennials can be seen as entitled, job hoppers, expecting rewards just for showing up, and lazy. -       Lee believes that millennials are conditioned by the way they grew up.   Working With Millennials -       If you don't have millennials in your business your business doesn't have a future. -       Lee went back to the basics of leadership management by reading a number of management books. -       Things that work for other generations don't work for millennials. -       If you do things to help millennials get engaged and stick with you, everyone benefits. -       Boomers are the ‘wait my turn' generation but millennials have never had to wait as they've always had instant access. -       Millennials have grown up with amazing access to information and people, the ability to make a change, expectations of access and no hierarchy. -       Millennials require a lot of context and ‘just do it because I said so' won't work. The more you provide context the better.   Two Key Tips for Working With Millennials -       1. Bring the context of your project to the forefront of the conversation and ask for people's input. -       2. Do a project the established way first and then improve it.   Teams & Strengths -       Know what personality types are within your team and don't be afraid to conduct MBTI and Strengths Finders tests. -       Figure out the dynamics within your team so you can accommodate them. -       Regardless of age, discover how people optimize their engagement and how they will work with others. -       WOO is the ability to keep talking until someone comes to your side and believes in you. -       Often when you are young on a team you don't get the creditability for having strategic ability. Strategy isn't earned it is a strength. -       It takes 30-60 days to get used to new processes. -       If you're not easy to work with then you don't have a business in the client service economy.   Subscribe to the show in iTunes or Stitcher Radio!   The music in today's episode was written by The Danger Os and produced by Nick Palmer.
