Leslie Scott: Building Teams, Reshaping Radio

After 7 and a half years, the longest gap between appearances in Sound Off Podcast history, Leslie Scott finally returns. And to say things have changed is a massive understatement.Back in 2016, Leslie was the PD for 107.7 The End in Seattle, driving the station to huge success in the millennial market. Since then, she's taken on a few more stations, been elevated to overseeing programming of Audacy's exclusive streaming-only channels... And like so many people in radio, been restructured out of a job. Their loss. We discuss where Leslie's currently at both life and career wise, but mainly this is a time for us to catch up and learn how Leslie's thoughts and predictions from 2016 have aged. For the most part, Leslie's values remain the same: Radio and digital should be friends, not enemies; Radio stations need to focus on curating personalities above all else; and the youngest generation is a giant well of untapped potential listeners who should be catered to. However, interestingly, Leslie is no longer a part of that youngest generation. She once was a sort of "Millennial Whisperer" in the radio industry, but Gen Z is a whole different beast, which we discuss at length. 7 years doesn't sound like a long time, but it really is, especially in an industry that's been scrambling so hard to keep up with the youth, and Leslie has a lot of thoughts about the way things have changed. We also discuss women's progress in the radio industry, or rather, its stagnation in recent years. Fred Jacobs of Jacobs Media published his AQ6 survey earlier this year, which you can read about here. It showed that women's representation in radio hasn't really improved since 2019. Being both a woman herself and serving on the board of directors for mentoring and inspiring women in radio, Leslie shares some interesting insights into why that might be.If you haven't heard our original interview with Leslie, and you'd like to compare for yourself, you can listen to it here. If nothing else, it's an interesting time capsule to a world before TikTok.A Transcript and video version of the episode is available on the network page. Please sign up for the SOUNDING OFF Newsletter. Welcome to this episode of 20/20 Money! My guest on today's show is Chris Tuff. Chris is the author of the book The Millennial Whisperer and in this conversation we talk about all things related to leading a team. As one might expect, a lot of the conversation that we had is applicable to leading all team members—not just Millennials. We talk about the importance of understanding your employees' purpose and what they want out of their career…not just their purpose in your organization. Chris shares a simple way to build better connections with your team and the impact that has on your organization. Overall this was a very enjoyable conversation, highlighting the responsibility that we as leaders have to the team we employ, while also sharing practical solutions to implement these concepts.   As a reminder, you can get all the information discussed in today's conversation by visiting our website at integratedpwm.com and clicking on the Learning Center. I bring you a special What Drives You episode with renowned author of “The Millennial Whisperer”, Chris Tuff. Chris was one of the first advertisers to work directly with Mark Zuckerberg in 2006 and filmed one of the first ever, “viral” videos, which landed him on the front page of The Wall Street Journal. Tuff's natural ability to connect with his nearly 80% millennial and Gen Z workforce led him to publish the national bestselling The Millennial Whisperer in 2019. A global movement soon followed, as the Atlanta resident shared lessons on empathy and genuine connection at work on some of the largest stages in the world including such Fortune 100 companies as Nike. I of course wanted to dig into Chris's personal drives, and you'll be interested to hear that his initial drive was simply to…beat his older brothers. In anything and everything. While that may not sound dramatic, the thread you'll keep hearing in these shows is how often seemingly innocuous events in our youth direct the trajectory of our lives and we don't even realize it. Chris went on to find himself just 7 years ago, burned out. A wife, two kids, great success in work, and totally spent. He took a month-long sabbatical and reinvented his life. In this episode you'll hear how his story unfolded, and through it I believe you'll find aspects that reveal similar issues in your life, that you can reinvent. How the different generations view work differently Why the grass isn't always greener elsewhere What does work flexibility mean and how is it changing? The value of more constructive feedback How to develop authentic connection with the team How to be nice and still fire someone About Chris Tuff Chris is the author of "Save Your Asks" and "The Millennial Whisperer". Learn more about Chris at the website www.ChrisTuff.me Books by Chris Tuff       ----- Excerpts from this conversation with Chris Tuff ----- There is nothing worse in life than complacency. ----- So 70%, generally speaking, of your job should actually fire you up and actually put this into tactics where on the first week that someone joins my team, I will have them take their job description and figure out what's in your 70% zone of excellence and fire you up. And then what's in your 30% zone of suck, right? Because the harsh reality, and I tell this to anyone willing to listen is that 30% of all of our jobs are gonna suck. ----- I went into an organization that had, okay, so they have 100,000 employees, but 2500 HR leaders, all right, which will give you perspective to just how much they put in their people and culture 2500 people. And so I dissected their data we did, we spent two months prepping for this meeting. And it all came down to just one big takeaway, which is just make it easy, everyone loves it here. But you make it so hard for people to actually move laterally to other parts of that organization. The simplest thing you can do is allow people to make those lateral job moves, because people are not leaving, because you make it so difficult, because you end up prioritizing those, those jobs for people from the outside. ----- Effective, authentic connection. How do you how do you know if it feels right? So authenticity is one of the things that's so few and far between in this world and my whole platform is around authentic connection. And, you know, one of the things that I emphasize is what I call the art of the fly by. And the art of the fly by is simply going by anyone on your team's desk and just saying, or, you know, in a hybrid workforce, texting them a video text message and say, George, that vacation you took last weekend look, epic. Tell me more about it. Like, I saw that you hung out at the beach and tried out surfing, that's awesome. Props to you. How did it go? Right? It's just taking a little bit of that vested interest in their daily lives, ----- ----more---- Your Intended Message is the podcast about how you can boost your career and business success by improving your communication skills. Chris Tuff is the partner of the advertising firm 22squared where he has helped them grow into a 400-plus employee digital powerhouse, over 90% millennials and Gen Z. He's also the author of the best-selling book The Millennial Whisperer where he shares lessons on empathy and genuine connection. In his newest book, Save Your Asks, he talks about becoming a better networker and salesperson using the same principles set up in The Millennial Whisperer. One of his favorite tips for making an ask that's impossible to ignore is called “masking your ask in your dream.” If you share your dream with someone, whatever it is, they are almost guaranteed to do anything within their power to help you achieve it. Building a new relationship is easy, but sustaining one is hard. And making too many asks is one easy way to drive a relationship into the ground. So save your asks, and start building up genuine connections with people.   The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “Start saving your asks. Curiosity is the difference between connecting and networking. If you take a genuine curiosity to the person sitting next to you and stop selling to them and start asking them some of these important questions of what drives them as humans, you're going to find not only more successful in your job. It's going to make your connections a lot more fulfilling. And so I encourage everyone to start saving their asks and take action towards more genuine connection.” -- Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. This is no different as millennial have taken over the workspace.Millennials are the generation that grew up in the technology boom when personal computers and the internet changed the landscape of the world forever. The assumption from some is that this made the generation soft and didn't foster their ability to communicate in person. Like all generational shifts, the goal should't be to change the next generation as much as it is to build a culture in which everyone can showcase their strengths. In this episode you will learn:The difference between Millennials and BoomersWhy Millennials aren't considered “loyal” employeesWhat Millennials want in a careerThe importance of autonomy in the workplaceHow to use high energy in managementStrategies for building professional connectionsHow to create a culture to attract and retain hard working employeesThe importance of authenticity in your careerEpisode ResourcesThe Millennial Whisperer websiteChris Tuff WebsiteLinked InInstagram

Chris Tuff is the renowned author of “The Millennial Whisperer." His initial motive that began the trajectory of his life? Beating his older brothers. In anything and everything. While that may not sound dramatic, the thread you’ll keep hearing in these shows is how often seemingly innocuous events in our youth direct the trajectory of our lives and we don’t even realize it. Chris found himself just 4.5 years ago, burned out. A wife, two kids, great success in work, and totally spent. He took a month-long sabbatical and reinvented his life. In this episode of the Motive podcast you’ll hear how his story unfolded, and through it I believe you’ll find aspects that reveal similar issues in your life, that you can reinvent. Here it is 2020, and a good part of the population scratches their head when the subject of Millennials and Gen Z comes up. With the pandemic completely changing how things are done in the working world for the foreseeable future, it would seem that these generations are going to be the ones left picking up the pieces and reassembling the economy in their own way.So what exactly does that look like? For the most part, we know what it looks like for entrepreneurs. But the usual 9 to 5 world is going to change drastically in the next 5 to 10 years. Like after 9/11, when we were all about ramping up security, are we going to now see a continued uptick in technology use specifically geared towards maintaining healthy workplaces? How will this change the workplace overall? Will things ever go back to "normal"?These are some of the questions Veronica and I ask this session's guest, Chris Tuff, author of the book The Millennial Whisperer. If you've not heard Chris before and you're into futurism, I think you'll really enjoy this chat.Enjoy! People want and need feedback, particularly Millennials. However, telling someone "nice job" is not effective feedback. In this episode, communications strategist Lee Caraher explains how to give feedback that results in real change. After a series of hiring failures she researched Millennials and became an expert, even writing a book called Millennials and Management. Several chapters focus on feedback because it is so critical, not just for Millennials, but for every generation. Listen to learn how you can help your team be more successful by giving effective feedback. What You'll Learn Three tips to giving better feedback How to improve brainstorming results when working with introverts Forget the Golden Rule - live by the Platinum Rule About Lee Caraher Lee Caraher is a CEO and acclaimed communication strategist known for her practical solutions to big problems. She started Double Forte in 2002 to work with good people, doing great work for good companies. Her clients span well-loved Bay Area brands including Clif Bar and CamelBak, hot Silicon Valley start-ups, financial service companies and wine and spirits companies. This is not her first rodeo, and she's learned a lot along the way that she shares freely with others in the hopes that everyone can reduce the drama in the workplace. Now her friends and colleagues call her "The Millennial Whisperer." After struggling with how to work well with Millennial clients and now staffers (more than half of Lee's staff is under 35) and then working to figure out how to make that work, Lee has written a positive and practical book about the topic, “Millennials & Management: The Essential Guide to Making it Work at Work.” Lee has a reputation for building cohesive, high producing teams who get a lot done well and have fun at the same time. She is a straight talker who doesn't hold too many punches, although she does her best to be pleasant about it. Her big laugh and sense of humor have gotten her out of a lot of trouble. She started her career in communications in Boston and then moved to California to work with well-known PR firm The Bohle Group and then Manning, Selvage & Lee. She moved to the Bay Area in 1995 to serve as the Vice President of Corporate and Consumer Communications at the $1.6 Billion SEGA of America. She then served as Executive Vice President of The Weber Group and Founder and President of Red Whistle Communications, both Interpublic companies. Lee is active in the community and currently serves on the Board of KQED Public Media, Grace Cathedral's Board of Trustees, and on the Board of Trustees of Menlo College, Atherton. Previously Lee served on the Board of Directors of The Marine Mammal Center, was the Chair of the Board for Community Gatepath, San Mateo County's largest organization serving the needs of people with developmental disabilities, and was the founding Chair of the Board for the St. Paul's Choir School. She consults with other non-profits on effective board organization and practices.
