On this episode of CD Burners, the guys are talking all things Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs! by Hellogoodbye, with the OG Bedroom Pop genius himself, Forrest Kline. Produced by Matt Mahaffey, this debut album has a playful and chaotic sound that's entirely its own and truly embodies the Myspace era and scene culture.
One year ago, Geoff and me began collaborating. This is the first interview that we did together. This interview with Matt Mahaffey remains one of our most popular... and for good reason, Matt is a lot of fun to chat with. On this eve of Thanksgiving, I wanna give special thanks to all the artists and listeners of Abandoned Albums. THANK YOU! And a big bunch of thanks to Geoff - it's a privilege to share a mic. While the editing team is away with their families, I thought I would re-drop our first interview. We'll be back next week with a brand new episode! Have a great Thanksgiving!! Geoff Calhoun joins Keith as they talk with Matt Mahaffey, the frontman and visionary behind the band sElf... and so much more. Oh, trust us, you know Matt's work. Matt Mahaffey grew up in Kingsport, Tennessee, and started writing songs and playing the drums at age 4. He would often perform with his brother, Mike Mahaffey when they were growing up. By age eleven, he played drums at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge. In the mid-nineties, he moved to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and attended MTSU. He lived and worked for ten years in Murfreesboro, where he co-founded Spongebath Records and formed the band sElf in 1994. In the early 2000s, Mahaffey relocated to Los Angeles. Matt has performed with and produced artists like Pink, Beck, Liz Phair, Tenacious D, Snoop Dogg, Beyoncé, Keith Urban, and on and on and on. He has also worked with various filmmakers, including Ivan Reitman, Michael Mann, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Andrew Adamson, & Hans Zimmer (for film score). He's also written jingles and composed music for Pedigree, Jumbone, Medicare, and Lexus. His music has been featured on numerous shows, including CSI: Miami, DanceLife, Entourage, MTV, E! Entertainment, Dirty Sexy Money, Weeds, and 60 Minutes. You get the idea. He's done a lot. Welcome to a new week here on the Retirement Quick Tips podcast. I'm your host Ashley Micciche, co-owner of True North Retirement Advisors, an independent financial advisory practice managing $340 million in client assets. I'm a Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor, and I started this podcast because I love helping people just like you gain clarity and make a plan for the retirement you envision. This week on the podcast, I'm discussing a big question that is on the minds of many Americans these days: Is It Too Late To Buy Real Estate? I sat down for an interview with Matt Mahaffey, principal broker with the Mahaffey Real Estate Group in Portland, OR. For over 18 years, Matt has had the opportunity to serve well over 500 families in the process of buying and selling real estate. He's advised clients on everything from first-time home purchases, to rental properties, to selling a 74-acre farm stand business. He's a true professional and has a deep understanding of the real estate market. As a 4th generation Oregonian, most of his expertise applies to the Portland, OR real estate market, but as you'll see, much of what we'll discuss this week in our interview applies to real estate across the United States. Matt and I have known each other for about 8 years, and he helped us find our current home back in 2014. He did such a great job that I referred him to my in-laws a couple years later when they sold their house and downsized after retiring. So this week on the podcast, Matt & I explore real estate issues of particular concern for retiree and pre-retiree Americans. Specifically, we discuss: The current real estate environment (prices, inventory, trends in 2022- higher interest rates, economic uncertainty, what else?)...Recent headlines within the past few weeks: WSJ: Median sales price for single-family existing homes was higher in fourth quarter versus year ago in 181 of 183 metro areas (https://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-housing-affordability-worsens-11644507291) WSJ: In Covid-19 Housing Market, the Middle Class Is Getting Priced Out (https://www.wsj.com/articles/in-covid-19-housing-market-the-middle-class-is-getting-priced-out-11644246000) WSJ: U.S. Home Sales Jumped 6.7% in January Amid Record-Low Inventory (https://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-home-sales-jumped-6-7-in-january-amid-record-low-inventory-11645196860) Selling and downsizing - is there a better time than right now to sell a larger home and downsize to something smaller? Single-level homes - big issue of supply for retirees looking for a floor plan that suits their needs as they age Concerns about buying at the top of the market…What are your thoughts on the market for investment properties and rentals Thoughts on buying a 2nd home as a vacation home or a snowbird destination? Again…concerns about buying at the top If you want to watch the full video interview with Matt Mahaffey its entirety, you can find it on my YouTube channel - True North Retirement. I hope what I have to share with you this week will help you make smart and thoughtful decisions with your retirement. And while I am careful to not lead you astray, personal finance is not an exact science. There is no one-size-fits-all solution for everyone, so I encourage you to disregard anything I say that may not be helpful for you, and to consult your own financial, tax, and legal advisors regarding your own individual situation. That's it for today. Come on back tomorrow where I'm diving into the interview with Matt. Thanks for listening! My name is Ashley Micciche...and this is the Retirement Quick Tips podcast. ---------- >>> Subscribe on Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/2DI2LSP >>> Subscribe on Amazon Alexa: https://amzn.to/2xRKrCs >>> Visit the podcast page: https://truenorthra.com/podcast/ ---------- Tags: retirement, investing, money, finance, financial planning, retirement planning, saving money, personal finance
We are joined by Leticia Wolf (aka Meta Dead) from the Nashville-based rock band, The Dead Deads. Throughout the years, Meta, along with her bandmates Daisy Dead and McQueen Dead have gained much well-deserved national recognition which includes sharing the live stage with other revered artists like Seether, KISS, and Bush to name a few. Their dedicated fanbase, popularly known as The Dead Corps has also been growing for as long as they have been playing music, and it's quite the story. Donning the X's painted over their eyes and giving the viewers/listeners the theatrical effect provide the music they put out a creative touch to their artistry. Meta dives into those experiences and describes how amazing this has been on a near-decade-long journey, even including how the name “Meat” came into existence. We also talk about the newest upcoming album titled “Tell Your Girls It's Alright,” and the different ideas and themes that came into play during the writing process – which involves plenty from the world's current events. Not only that, but a single they recently released, “Murder Ballad II,” includes their collaboration with hard rock music singer-songwriter Corey Taylor. Meta talks about how the lyricism and pairing up with Corey was a perfect ingredient for the band on this record. And finally, Meta's husband/partner-in-crime, Matt Mahaffey is a producer on this new record and we get the chance to ask her how that process went into bringing this full-length album to the surface. So many talented people involved in this episode, so please join us with Meta Dead as we unpack so much and beyond as new tunes and a new chapter on touring life is set to resume soon – And be sure to buy and stream The Dead Deads new album “Tell Your Girls It's Alright,” set to drop August 20 via Rumble Records.Stay connected with The Dead Deads, visit: https://thedeaddeads.com/, https://www.facebook.com/thedeaddeads/ and https://www.instagram.com/thedeaddeads/Stay connected with IUF, visit: https://interviewunderfire.com/

Matt Mahaffey is a filmmaker, actor, and comedian living in Chicago, IL. His company, Jane Barbe Productions, is a Chicago based video and creative agency. https://www.janebarbeproductions.com/
Jeff Turzo is a musician, producer, and founder of Overstayer Recording Equipment, a company that designs cool audio gear for the studio. Jeff started out as a musician and spent a decade producing and touring with his band, God Lives Under Water. His band was signed by Rick Rubin to American Recordings in 1993. GLU went on to record multiple albums with a heavy guitar, synth, loop driven pop sound that landed them a movie soundtrack hit for the Keanu Reeves film, Johnny Mnemonic, and airtime on alternative rock stations and MTV. This led to years of touring for his band sharing the stage with other heavy pop bands like KMFDM, Korn, Filter, Deftones, No Doubt, and Sublime. In the studio Jeff was a multi-instrumentalist and producer with synthesis/sampling knowledge, sometimes producing with Matt Mahaffey (episode 69), but also with his GLU partner David Reilly, staying busy with remix projects that included Skinny Puppy, Rob Zombie and Messiah. He also organized For the Masses: A Tribute To Depeche Mode in 1998, and released Up Off The Floor with GLU in 2004. Matt formed his own successful rock band, sElf and then cofounded Spongebath records an imprint of Zoo records. From 1995 on sElf and Spongebath became a shining beacon of hope for indi bands in middle TN wanting to shake the stereotype of country music. After a decade in middle TN Matt moved to LA to be closer to his next label Dreamworks where he developed his production career continuing to write and record for his own band. He has a long list of artists in the studio including: Pink, Beck, Liz Phair, Tenacious D, Lupe Fiasco, Phantom Planet, Beyoncé, Butch Walker, Hellogoodbye, Forever the Sickest Kids, Miranda Cosgrove, The White Tie Affair, Keith Urban, The Sounds, L.E.O. and Smash Mouth. And recently Matt just played on Beck's Grammy winning Album of the Year 2015, Morning Phase. Matt has also created music for many filmmakers including Ivan Reitman, Michael Mann, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Andrew Adamson, and Hans Zimmer. And he also wrote music for Shrek, Shrek 2, and Shrek 4. And contributed music for the cartoons Ni Hao Kai-Lan and Sanjay and Craig. And other TV credits include: CSI Miami, DanceLife, Entourage, MTV, E! Entertainment, Weeds, and 60 Minutes. He has even spoken at TEDx Nashville, and notably created the famous jingle for Expedia.com, and appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live as the Muppet character “Animal” in a drum off with Blink 182 drummer, Travis Baker.

As this is episode 101, we indulge our grumpier sides and talk about things that really annoy us in the studio world, but not before we marvel at Matt Mahaffey's amazing rendition of classic AC/DC track Back in Black on drums and Omnichord, then we discuss the recently delayed release of the Linn Drum II and the availability of Dave Smiths new Mopho desktop synthesizer. Then we discover who are panel would like to meet or work with alive or dead - which was one of the topics we didn't get around to last week (no surprise!).
