Today on the podcast we have Waleed Suliman! Waleed runs with the Brooks Beasts under Coach Danny Mackey. He ran at Ole Miss, where he was a five-time SEC champion and four-time NCAA All-American, and was part of their 2020 SEC Cross Country Championship team. He also placed third in the indoor mile at the NCAA Championships and has competed in both the 2021 and 2024 Olympic Trials in the 1500. When I was prepping for this interview, I heard Danny Mackey describe Waleed as a high risk taker, not afraid to fail, and very talented, and says that very few athletes he’s worked with have had all three of those qualities. I got to know him a little bit when he came to Raleigh for the Sir Walter Mile and knew I had to have him on the podcast. Unfortunately, he took a nasty fall at Sir Walter and ended up with a stress fracture in his sacrum, so his season ended a little earlier than planned. We talk about the injury, what recovery looks like, and why he’s leaning into some of the other things he loves, like fishing and music, while he can’t run. Waleed was born in Jordan after his parents fled Darfur, Sudan, and moved to the United States at 15. He became a 10-time state champion in Virginia before heading to Ole Miss, where his running really took off. I loved hearing more about his family’s story, adjusting to life in the U.S., finding his place through running, and eventually choosing Ole Miss. We also talk about why the team environment of the Brooks Beasts works so well for him, his relationship with Danny Mackey, what it’s like training alongside athletes like Josh Kerr, and where he wants to take his own career. Waleed has a 3:51 mile PR on the track, 3:52 on the roads, and a 3:33 1500 PR, and he feels like he still has a lot of unfinished business in the sport.
