Host Geri Cole welcomes THE HANDMAID'S TALE creator, showrunner, writer, and EP Bruce Miller and writer and EP Yahlin Chang to the show to talk about how real-world refugee stories give the show inspiration and guidance, the ways in which writing can be both cruel and cathartic, and how the show encourages everyone—both above and below the line—to bring their A-game. ** - Please note: This episode comes with a spoiler alert as well as a content warning for a discussion of sexual violence against women and other traumatic topics. - **  Bruce Miller is a television writer and producer who, before HANDMAID'S, was well known for his work as showrunner and writer for popular sci-fi series like EUREKA and ALPHAS. For his work on The Handmaid's Tale, Miller won the 2017 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. Yahlin Chang is a writer and producer who wrote on several series including DIRTY SEXY MONEY, PAN AM, and SUPERGIRL, before joining the writers' room of THE HANDMAID'S TALE. She was nominated for a 2021 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Drama for the series. THE HANDMAID'S TALE is a dystopian television series based on Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel of the same name. The series portrays life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was the United States which is ruled by an ultra-religious fundamentalist regime. Faced with a world devastated by environmental disasters and a plummeting birth rate, the few remaining fertile women are forced into sexual servitude. One of these women, Offred, is determined to survive the terrifying world she lives in, and find the daughter that was taken from her. The series—which has received multiple Emmy, Golden Globe, Writers Guild Awards, among many others—premiered on Hulu in April 2017, and is currently in production for its 5th season. Seasons 1-4 are available to stream on Hulu. --- Before it was a podcast, OnWriting was a print publication. Check out OnWriting: The Print Archives. Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 79th episode of VideoFuzzy, reporting the progress I've made in cataloging nearly 3,000 VHS transfers and digital recordings. Wishing everyone a safe and healthy 2022! For this installment, titled "The Play's the Thing," in my Friday Night Feature I talk about show-within-a-show plot points I encountered in "Leverage," "Burn Notice," "The Closer," "Monk," "Hung," "In Plain Sight," "The Simpsons," "Drop Dead Diva" and "Better Off Ted," and their place and use in productions. In Cross Connections, I explore K. Callan's appearances as a Golden Thread through a lot of the media I grew up watching and throughout my media collection, and representing the tightest connection I've found so far to "Knives Out" through Frances Conroy in "Remington Steele" and Ed Begley Jr. in "St. Elsewhere" to "Six Feet Under," binding quite a few shows to the mystical center of my media collection in my "Studio Six Feet Under" challenge. I also noted Justina Machado in the "One Day at a Time" reboot puts every Norman Lear production also one step removed from "Six Feet Under." And K Callan's involvement in several shows featured in Chris Cooling's podcast "Forgotten TV" gave me a great opportunity for a quick shoutout to that excellent production. Other connections I talk about in my Classic Collection discussion include Christine Baranski's appearance in "Psych" with the more usual recurring character of Cybill Shepherd in "Cybill." Also, John Schneider's appearances in "Dirty Sexy Money," "Nip/Tuck" and "Leverage," and connections through "The Closer," "Cougar Town," "Drop Dead Diva" and "Rescue Me." In Fond Reflections, together with the loss to the world of Betty White, I extend my deep condolences to the "All About Agatha" podcast team, with the sudden passing of cohost Catherine Brobeck, celebrating her contributions in superlative discussion, debate and insights into the vast majority of mystery novelist, Queen of Crime Agatha Christie's body of work, and all the best to Kemper Donovan in the wake of the devastating loss of his friend and cohost in this more than five year journey. It was so good to have this too brief acquaintance. In my Classic VHS-to-DVD collection, discussion of dustups on "Rescue Me," additional cross connections, a screen capture of cool art I saw in "Burn Notice" I posted to VideoFuzzy's Instagram account, a clip from Portishead's "Only You" in the cold open for "Warehouse 13," and the Comedy Central Roast of Joan Rivers. Also, tracking the car crash I foreshadowed a couple episodes back, documenting some weirdness I encountered in hopping from Binder No. 6 to Binder No. 7 – a blank disc, two copies of disc 1241 (now marked 1241-1 and 1241-2), and the odd displacement of Disc 1449, now exhaustively documented among this latest installment of "History's Most Boring Mysteries." In my Current direct-to-digital collection, discussion of "Doctor Who: Flux," exploring Weeping Angels, Division, an Ood, the Mad Mole of Liverpool, a snake alien involved from the earliest beginnings of UNIT, and at the center of it all, a tri-phasic Doctor and her team with chameleon arch tech, a grumpy doggo, a planet called Time, the Temple of the Mora and a confrontation with the Vanquishers while a Gallifreyan scientist tries to destroy the universe from outside of it. Also, commentary on "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind," "Queens," "Live in Front of a Studio Audience: The Facts of Life and Diff'rent Strokes" and the 2002 Bruce Willis movie "Bandits" featuring Tanita Tikaram's "Twist in my Sobriety." And in What I've Been Watching, Ralph and I have been watching "My Hero Academia," and we recently took in the prequel installment, "The King's Man." Fun show. Finally, a link to my eighth installment of "VideoFuzzy: The Video" with comments from my Friday Night Feature: https://youtu.be/Xdn6tRm2LU4 TOP TEN: Here's a "top ten" episode guide for people looking for a quick read-in on this blog and podcast effort. He's making waves with a full fledged, contemporary house sound with a 90's-style twist. But while the name is new to the scene, his musical background speaks volumes, ranging from classical music training to producing timeless house tunes and remixes for some of the biggest names in electronic music. Joe Stone's first single, 'The Party (This Is How We Do It)', gained lots of attention in the summer of 2015. It repackaged the infamous Montell Jordan hit it in a 21st century house groove, featuring the original vocals approved by Jordan himself. In the meantime, Stone was added to festival lineups all over the world, including Tomorrowland, Dancevalley, Judgement Ibiza, Hed Kandi and Sunrise Festival to name a few. His extensive touring schedule led to inspiration for new masterpieces, such as ‘Make Love' and ‘Let's Go Together', which soon led to a stream of remix requests. Joe Stone remixed tracks for Kriss Kross Amsterdam, Quintino, Felix Jaehn, EDX, R3hab, and Lost Frequencies, as well as David Guetta & Afrojack's ‘Dirty Sexy Money'. Seamus Dever knows a thing or two about playing bad guys. After all, it was his character Dr. Ian Devlin who accidentally shot young Michael Corinthos on General Hospital. On ABC primetime's Castle, premiering tonight at 10/9C, Dever finally gets a chance to play one the good guys. He plays Irish cop Kevin Ryan, sharing screentime with Stana Katic, Jon Huerta and fellow ABC daytime grad Nathan Fillion (ex-Joey, One Life to Live), who portrays the title character, Richard Castle, a best-selling crime novelist suffering from writer's block, who decides to shadow NYPD detective Kate Beckett (Katic) for inspiration. On this episode of the Daytime Confidential Podcast, Dever chats with Luke and Jamey about his role on the highly-anticipated midseason show, his first as a primetime series regular. Dever shares that although Castle is being likened to 80's comfort food TV programs like Moonlighting or Scarecrow and Mrs. King, he sees more of a parallel between the series and the popular screwball comedies of the 30's and 40's, which he says sets Castle apart from other primetime crime procedurals. He also reveals whether or not he believes there is more pressure for the show to suceed considering ABC's recent cancellations of such high-profile shows as Dirty Sexy Money, Eli Stone, Pushing Daisies and Life on Mars. Then Dever looks back with Luke and Jamey about his brief, but memorable stint on General Hospital. He reveals how he felt when he learned the antihero doctor he signed on to play, was being turned into a mob assassin, and what role the 2007-08 Writers' Strike played in that plot twist. Dever talks about what it was like working with Sebastian Roche, Tyler Christopher, Jason Thompson and Sarah Brown, whom he still considers a pal, and reveals if he and Nathan Fillion swap soap stories on the set of Castle. Dever also provides a sneak peek of Ready or Not, his upcoming Direct-to-DVD buddy comedy. It's an episode you don't wanna miss.

The WGA Strike is about to take away television but before that happens, there's plenty for GMMR and I to talk about!  Dan and Kath are back for TV Podcast #16, and it's all about the shows!  It's not about the strike, it's just us talking about what we've loved and hated about television over the past couple weeks.  I'm going to warn you now, it's an hour long podcast.  We haven't talked in a while so sit back, relax, and listen to us in 2 sittings if that makes it easier.  Thanks for sticking with us! We tackle each day's best and worst starting with Monday and working our way all the way to the lazy nights of Sunday.  Chuck, HIMYM, Big Bang Theory, Prison Break, Heroes, House, Bones, Reaper, Pushing Daisies, Gossip Girl, Dirty Sexy Money, Private Practice, The Office, Grey's Anatomy, Ugly Betty, Supernatural, Moonlight, Friday Night Lights, Torchwood, The Amazing Race, Brothers & Sisters, Dexter, and more.Phew, who's tired already?
