What we expect from our future has tremendous power over our experience in the meantime―that’s why the Bible places the hope of heaven at the center of the Christian life. But even if we affirm the reality of our heavenly future, we often struggle to long for heaven, much less to connect the promises of the world to come to the concrete details of life in this world as it is. If and when we think about heaven at all, it’s easy to think of it like an insurance policy that will be there when we need it. But the Bible defines our future hope as an inheritance - a trust fund that is certain, inexhaustible, and freely accessible here and now. Our guest, Matthew McCullough, will offer a series of meditations that model how to draw on the hope of heaven for everyday life in the meantime.Become a Parshall Partner: http://moodyradio.org/donateto/inthemarket/partnersSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Life-expectancy worldwide is twice what it was a hundred years ago. And because of modern medicine, many of us don't often see death up close. That makes it easy to live as if death is someone else's problem. It isn't.On this archive episode of the Reasonable Theology podcast we sit down with Matthew McCullough, a pastor and author who recently published a book called Remember Death: The Surprising Path to Living Hope. When we ignore our own mortality, we lose out on much of what Scripture has for us to learn. As McCullough states, "When the reality of death is far from our minds, the promises of Jesus often seem detached from our lives."In this episode we'll discuss:The reason that death is, for many of us, like a foreign countryCultural changes that have occurred that allow us to 'forget' the reality of deathThe negative consequences of death becoming tabooWhat believers miss out on when they forget deathThe benefits of remembering our mortality (and why it's much more than carpe diem)How our view of death impacts how we respond to the promises of ChristPractical (and non-morbid!) steps we can take to remember deathCheck out the Show Notes for this episodeIf you enjoy the sermons and written works of CH Spurgeon, check out the all-new CHSpurgeon.com Here you'll find sermon audio as well as resources by and about the Prince of Preachers. Nathaniel Schutta (or Nate) is a software architect focused on cloud computing and building usable applications. A proponent of polyglot programming, Nate has written multiple books and appeared in various videos. Nate is a seasoned speaker, regularly presenting at conferences worldwide, No Fluff Just Stuff symposia, meetups, universities, and user groups. In addition to his day job, Nate is an adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota where he teaches students to embrace (and evaluate) technical change. Driven to rid the world of bad presentations, Nate co-authored the book Presentation Patterns with Neal Ford and Matthew McCullough. Nate has published Thinking Architecturally and Responsible Microservices both available as free downloads from VMware.   Topics of Discussion: [5:12] How Nate decided he liked development and architecture, and who was Dr. Evil? [7:10] Nate worked at a software company for a brief period and spent a lot of his time building enterprise web apps. [10:13] Is it possible to think and talk about software the same, regardless of language? [14:17] Nate Defines circuit breaker. [15:56] The importance of having good observability and monitoring in place to see what is going on. [22:35] Nate gives some categories of architects and where he thinks it changes in responsibility and scope. [26:14] To quote Ralph Johnson, “Architecture is the important stuff, whatever that is.” While we may have different definitions of “IT,” Nate thinks that it has the decisions that are hard to change later, and the ones we hope we get right in the first place. The “IT” is also what matters to the application at hand. [36:14] Are we currently at another inflection point? [38:03] The current landscape and challenges of inventing things on the fly. [45:22] What can we expect from Nate's new book? [55:54] Engineers often overlook soft skills, and the Dale Carnegie books on leadership are a great place to start.   Mentioned in this Episodes: Clear Measure Way Architect Forum Software Engineer Forum Programming with Palermo — New Video Podcast! Dr. Benjamin Wetzel joins me to discuss the history of religion and war in the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, from mainline Protestant ministers calling souls to join the Union Army, to Catholic priests resisting the war against Spain in 1898. We admitted we were powerless over our addictions and compulsive behaviors, that our lives had become unmanageable. I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature.  For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. Romans 7:18 NIV 2. We came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. Philippians 2:13 NIV 3. We made a decision to turn our lives and our wills over to the care of God. Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your  spiritual act of worship. Romans 12:1 NIV 4. We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord. Lamentations 3:40 NIV 5. We admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. James 5:16a NIV 6. We were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. James 4:10 NIV 7. We humbly asked Him to remove all our shortcomings. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 NIV 8. We made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all. Do to others as you would have them do to you. Luke 6:31 NIV 9. We made direct amends to such people whenever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift. Matthew 5:23-24 NIV 10. We continue to take personal inventory and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it. So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall! 1 Corinthians 10:12 11. We sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, praying only for knowledge of His will for us, and power to carry that out. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. Colossians 3:16a NIV 12. Having had a spiritual experience as the result of these steps, we try to carry this message to others and practice these principles in all our affairs. Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore them gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted. Galatians 6:1 NIV

Matthew McCullough discusses how thinking and being really honest about the reality of death can paradoxically free us to find hope and joy in God like never before. He reflects on our culture's strategies to avoid death at all costs, highlights how COVID-19 has brought our mortality to the forefront of our collective consciousness in a unique way right now, and discusses why the practice of intentionally remembering death finds support in both Scripture and church history.

"Awareness of death weakens our attachments to false hopes."Matthew McCullough delivered a message during a breakout session at The Gospel Coalition’s 2019 National Conference titled, “Remember Death: The Surprising Path to Living Hope” based on his book by the same name. McCullough focuses on the importance of paying careful attention to death, removing the taboo around the subject, allowing it to deepen our spiritual walk, and encourage us with hope.In a culture that prioritizes pleasures, certainly death seems a morbid and unexpected topic of conversation. Yet McCullough focuses on two benefits in the lives of Christians, not in simply preparing for death, but in knowingly living with death on the horizon—learning to number our days.

In this episode of The Hope + Help Project, Christine Chappell interviews author and pastor Matthew McCullough. They discuss Matt's book, "Remember Death: The Surprising Path to Living Hope" to learn how cultivating "death-awareness" clarifies the relevance of Jesus's promises in the midst of our everyday problems. During the conversation, Matt offers listeners an overview of the Christian tradition of "memento mori" (latin: remember death) and explains some of the reasons why death-awareness was such a prominent part of daily life in earlier centuries. He also considers why 21st century Western Christians have increasingly shoved the realities of death from their consciousness—and examines the various negative impacts such death-avoidance has had as a result. Other questions considered: • Why hasn't American prosperity and "happiness" risen in tandem over the decades? • In what ways does death challenge the core identity of every human being? • How have medical advances altered the way death is perceived and experienced in modern American society? • How can we have death-awareness without erring on the side of denial or despair? • How does a relationship with Jesus Christ help us face the awful realties of death with assurance and hope? Death is an inescapable part of life that carries enormous significance for all humans. Christianity offers hope in death, but if we're being honest, how comfortable are we with discussing death at church or in our daily conversations?

Life-expectancy worldwide is twice what it was a hundred years ago. And because of modern medicine, many of us don’t often see death up close. That makes it easy to live as if death is someone else’s problem. It isn’t. On this episode of the Reasonable Theology podcast we sit down with Matthew McCullough, a pastor and author who recently published a book called Remember Death: The Surprising Path to Living Hope. When we ignore our own mortality, we lose out on much of what Scripture has for us to learn. As McCullough states, "When the reality of death is far from our minds, the promises of Jesus often seem detached from our lives."In this episode we'll discuss:The reason that death is, for many of us, like a foreign countryCultural changes that have occurred that allow us to 'forget' the reality of deathThe negative consequences of death becoming tabooWhat believers miss out on when they forget deathThe benefits of remembering our mortality (and why it's much more than carpe diem)How our view of death impacts how we respond to the promises of ChristPractical (and non-morbid!) steps we can take to remember deathFor more helpful resources, see the show notes at ReasonableTheology.org/Episode9Support the show (https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/reasonabletheology)

Today on the show, we are joined in the home studio with Dr. Matthew McCullough. Matthew got his Masters of Physics and his doctorate in Theoretical Particle Physics from the University of Oxford in the UK. He is currently working as a theoretical physicist at the CERN laboratory coming up with cool new theories about Dark Matter and our universe.  As a theorists, not to be confused with previous pod guests that were experimental physicists, his job is to think deeply about the rules that govern the universe and to come up with brand new theories about how it all works. We talked about growing up in Belfast, Ireland; getting kicked out of his band; how we know Dark Matter exists; and ultimately, how math underpins the nature of our universe.
