In an unscripted, unprepared episode, Kelly records a conversation between herself and her friend, Melody Godfred, about taking a mental health break. Kelly talks about the breakdown she had the week prior and Melody shares her experience with the Fred and Far owner and being an author and pausing it all to take an indefinite break to take care of her mental health, what that looks like and why. Kelly describes the moment she wrote in her journal "who the fuck am I?" and why her inability to answer that question led her to finally let go of all the striving and plan to pause. Last year one of my best-friends, Kyle Kuhns, sent me Self Love Poetry by Melody Godfred for my birthday. As a fellow Cancer, he just knew how much a book like this would mean to me and help me along my own self-love journey, and he was right. Melody's writing speaks to the deepest parts of my soul and healed me in ways that I'll never be able to truly articulate. I started to share my favorite poems on Instagram/TikTok, Melody saw my posts, we connected via social media, and today she is sitting down with me on We're Going To Get Through This. I can't even believe it! Melody Godfred is THE Self Love Philosopher. As a poet, author and speaker, she is devoted to empowering people to love themselves and transform their lives, and she has definitely transformed mine. Her poetry has been featured by Oprah Magazine and Today with Hoda and Jenna, among others, and I am so honored to have the privilege to connect with her today about the importance of not only self-love, but self-advocacy. You'll learn about her journey from lawyer to self love philosopher, the importance of advocating for yourself when it comes to your health, embracing your desires, and so much more. Join our latest conscious conversation with Melody Godfred, the Self Care Goddess as she talks about how putting yourself first is not only not selfish, but self full. Self Love Philosopher Melody Godfred is a poet, author and entrepreneur who is passionate about empowering people to love themselves and transform their lives. Melody started her career as a litigation attorney, but soon realized a disconnect between her work and essence, so she left a prestigious position at a top law firm to launch Write In Color, her personal branding and career development company. She quickly established her reputation as a leader in the career development space. Through her work as a coach exploring the narratives of hundreds of women, and after undergoing several life transitions herself -- including motherhood -- Melody discovered a common trend: in their quest to fuel their careers and relationships, women were increasingly sacrificing their authentic selves, happiness and well-being. Melody needed a reminder to choose herself each and every day and believed that other women did too, so she created the Self Love Pinky Ring, a self-commitment ring for women, and launched Fred and Far, her self love movement and community. Her ring and community instantly went viral around the world (Vogue, InStyle, Cosmopolitan, and more), and started a global conversation around self love. In 2020, Melody published https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.google.com/url?q%3Dhttps://www.amazon.com/Self-Love-Poetry-Thinkers-Feelers/dp/1524871222/ref%253Dsr_1_5?crid%253D11V7W8Y9OIWWU%2526keywords%253Dself%252Blove%252Bpoetry%2526qid%253D1644967977%2526sprefix%253Dself%252Blove%252Bpoetry%25252Caps%25252C164%2526sr%253D8-5%26amp;sa%3DD%26amp;source%3Deditors%26amp;ust%3D1658895174157261%26amp;usg%3DAOvVaw2D1ngdO6vIf2GS7nVhoP2O&sa=D&source=docs&ust=1658895174162930&usg=AOvVaw2FKYJ504dXnKNhZm-IrqrX (Self Love Poetry: For Thinkers & Feelers), a collection of 200 poems that instantly became and remains a bestseller. One of her poems (“I thought 2020 would be the year I got everything I wanted. Now I know 2020 is the year I appreciate everything I have.”) was shared on social media by Oprah Magazine just before the Thanksgiving Holiday, quickly going viral and eventually reaching hundreds of millions of people, in addition to earning a feature on Today with Hoda and Jenna. In a recorded phone call between friends, Kelly and author, Melody Godfred, dive into a range of topics from overwhelm, defeat, the messiness of self love, finding uniqueness and authenticity and even The Kardashians. Kelly tells Melody why she has struggled in her own journey with self love: "I've left myself so many times after the moment I 'decided' I wanted to love myself." Melody explains that she is "embracing the fact that I am a complex person. The more we try to control, the more our ego feels safe, but our authentic self is the exact opposite." They also discuss the ways that they are finding feelings of safety in the current climate and in a culture that just simply does not feel save. “Today we take our lessons from the Fairy Godmother of Self Love, Melody Godfred, on living in the present, keeping it simple, staying humble, and taking back our permission to love ourselves. Melody makes self-love so easy- listen to the whispers of your body and let your intuition guide you. Bottom line- stop making it so hard!” A background on today's guest: Self Love Philosopher Melody Godfred is a poet, mother of 3, author, and entrepreneur who is passionate about empowering people to love themselves and transform their lives. Melody in my eyes, put simply, is The Fairy Godmother of self-love! She stepped into this light, after realizing the disconnect in her career as a successful litigation attorney and her deepest essence. Melody left the corporate world and became a true pioneer in this space before it was so SEXY, when she launched her Self Love Pinky Ring, a self-commitment ring for women, and thereby started a huge community and movement across the world to re-examine how women assign their own self-worth. Melody's work caught on like wildfire as top news agencies and influencers, including Vogue, Instyle, Oprah Magazine, Forbes among the many, caught wind of this global conversation and Melody's vision. Ever since, among many incredible feats, Melody has published 2 books, Self Love Poetry: For Thinkers and Feelers and her latest the ABCs of Self Love, with a third book set to release in the fall of 2022 on moving through the brave new post-pandemic world.
In this episode we're diving deep into the world of self-love and and self-care, with an angle on motherhood. What does it mean to learn to take care of yourselves through different seasons? How does self love change and what does it do to our authenticity? How can we learn to hear and honor your intuition through different seasons of self-love? Self Love Philosopher Melody Godfred is an entrepreneur and author who is passionate about empowering women to choose themselves through daily acts of self-love and self-care. After starting her career as a litigation attorney, Melody shifted into entrepreneurship, first founding career development company Write In Color and then self love movement, Fred and Far, through which she created the Self Love Pinky Ring, a globally recognized symbol of self-empowerment. She is the author of three books, including her 2020 release, Self Love Poetry for Thinkers and Feelers, which was a #1 Amazon new release and remains a bestseller. Welcome, friends, to the first of an ongoing series I’m making for us all about the many ways to build a business. Over the years, I’ve had client after client get frustrated, feeling like they have to create business a certain way. Like they have to change who they are, how they work, what they value in order to succeed. So, I want to interview folks and take a peek underneath the hood of their businesses, to learn how things work, what they did to make it work, and who they are behind the scenes in and out of their business. We start with a woman I deeply admire, whose business I’ve been following and loving for years. Melody Godfred is the founder of Fred and Far, a self-love movement that builds community, connection and celebration amongst women. Fred and Far is the home of the self love pinky ring - a ring inspired by the idea of the engagement ring as a promise to someone else, but this time flipped into a promise to yourself. In this episode, Melody talks about… How she built a physical product based business from something she needed herself The good, the bad and the ugly of building a business How to prepare for your success The toxicity of connecting your worth to what you charge in business Pricing your offerings and products And so much more. If you watch my stories on Instagram, you’ve likely seen my citrine self love pinky ring a time or two. Melody is also an author, and has written two books of poetry as part of her movement, and as I discovered in this episode she’s also a fiction writer. Grab any (or all) of her books below. Self Love Poetry: For Thinkers and Feelers The ABCs of Self Love The Agency At the end of our conversation, Melody shared a note about choosing between staying safe, comfortable, and going after what it is you really want. I’ve copied those questions below, and invite you to reflect on them and, if you feel so inclined, share what comes through and tag Fred and Far on social media. MG: “What is my big picture dream? What is that fantasy? What is it that I want for myself more than anything? And then follow that with, and what am I willing to give up today to get there? Because the thing you have to give up might be very safe. It might be very familiar and comfortable, and you may not know what stands on the other side of letting that thing go, but sometimes sacrificing is necessary and that's what I'm trying to get comfortable with. It's like, how can I sacrifice the known for a greater unknown?” Now without further ado, settle in and enjoy the show. Click here for a full transcript of the show.
