Data on 824 fireballs observed by the digital cameras of the European Fireball Network in 2017-2018 II Analysis of orbital and physical properties of centimeter-sized meteoroids by J. Borovicka et al. on Sunday 25 September Meteoroids impacting the Earth on a daily basis are fragments of asteroids and comets. By studying fireballs produced during their disintegration in the atmosphere, we can gain information about their source regions and the properties of their parent bodies. In this work, data on 824 fireballs presented in an accompanying paper and catalog are used. We propose a new empirical parameter for the classification of the physical properties of meteoroids, based on the maximum dynamic pressure suffered by the meteoroid in the atmosphere. We then compare the physical and orbital properties of meteoroids. We find that aphelion distance is a better indicator of asteroidal origin than the Tisserand parameter. Meteoroids with aphelia lower than 4.9 AU are mostly asteroidal, with the exception of the Taurids and alpha Capricornids associated with the comets 2P/Encke and 169P/NEAT, respectively. We found another population of strong meteoroids of probably asteroidal origin on orbits with either high eccentricities or high inclinations, and aphelia up to ~ 7 AU. Among the meteoroid streams, the Geminids and eta Virginids are the strongest, and Leonids and alpha Capricornids the weakest. We found fine orbital structures within the Geminid and Perseid streams. Four minor meteoroid streams from the working list of the International Astronomical Union were confirmed. No meteoroid with perihelion distance lower than 0.07 AU was detected. Spectra are available for some of the fireballs, and they enabled us to identify several iron meteoroids and meteoroids deficient in sodium. Recognition and frequency of fireballs leading to meteorite falls is also discussed. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.11254v1

There are 2 words people tend to confuse with each other: meteors and meteoroids. Meteors are essentially streaks of light made by burning debris from comets. To put it more romantically, meteors are “shooting stars”! Meteoroids are space rocks before they enter the earth's atmosphere and lose the –oid part of their name. These things are fragments of comets. Just like Earth and other planets, comets move around the Sun. And when they come near it, the Sun boils away some of their icy surfaces, and dust and rock break away. And – meteoroids are born. There's plenty of this stuff floating out in space and circling the Sun. But occasionally, our planet comes across a trail of debris when our orbits cross paths... Learn more about your ad choices. More than 60 million years ago, an object the size of a small city barreled into planet Earth, traveling at more than 22,000 miles per hour. That meteoroid, many scientists believe, triggered a set of cataclysmic climate changes and natural disasters that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. But what triggered the meteoroid? Lisa Randall, a particle physicist and bestselling author, tackles this question in her book, "Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs: The Astounding Interconnectedness of the Universe." Randall theorizes that the meteoroid was a comet that was dislodged from its orbit when the solar system passed through a disc of dark matter. If you're now wondering, "what's dark matter?", you're not alone. Dark matter is one of the great mysteries of modern science. Dark matter acts like matter, Randall said, "but what distinguishes it is that light just goes right through it. ... I wouldn't call it dark — I would call it transparent." "Billions of dark matter particles are going through us every second, but we don't know it because they're not interacting with us." In 2015, Randall joined MPR News host Kerri Miller to talk about her dark matter research and other mysteries of the universe. Let it whet your appetite for the conversation with novelist Emily St. John Mandel coming this Friday, which explores time travel in a futuristic world. Guest: Lisa Randall is a best-selling author and Harvard astrophysicist. This conversation with Don Hladiuk is about the planetary geology focusing on meteoroids, meteors, and meteorites.  How do you recognize a space rock from an Earth rock?  Where do meteorites come from?  How are meteorites brought back from space?  What big events happened in the past?  What do you do if you see a fireball? If you'd like to know the answers to all of these questions, join us for an out of this world discussion with "Spaceman". May this exchange serve to expand your geological knowledge on the go.  For more information go to www.stoneconsulting.info.  To report a fireball go to www.imo.net/observations/fireballs/fireball-report-programCitation:  Hladiuk, Don. Esos proyectos son SMART, (Spectroscopy of Meteoroids in the Atmosphere with Robotic Technologies) y MIDAS (Moon Impacts Detection and Analysis System).

The study which examined the galactic cores of two of the largest known galaxies – has opened a new window into the processes that shape the evolution of massive galaxies. *Uranus may have additional unseen moons The planet Uranus may have another two as yet undiscovered moons. A report claims unusual patterns just detected in two of Uranus’s dark rings could indicate the presence of two small moonlets between four and 14 kilometres wide. *Meteoroids hitting the Moon at least a hundred times more frequently than previously thought A new study has found that small meteoroids are hitting the Moon at least a hundred times more frequently than previously thought. The findings raise fresh concerns about future long term human exploration of the lunar surface. *Dramatic seasonal changes seen on Titan As Titan approaches its northern summer solstice, NASA's Cassini spacecraft has revealed dramatic seasonal changes in the atmospheric temperature and composition of Saturn's largest moon. The new observations show a polar reversal in Titan's atmosphere since Cassini arrived at Saturn in 2004. If you're enjoying SpaceTime, please help out by sharing and telling your friends. Back to the wonderful Supercharger for two more of its games, Suicide Mission and Killer Satellites. I forgot to mention in the show that the Prototype version of Suicide Mission, Meteoroids, has a similar descending note scale like the arcade version of Asteroids. You can hear that in the sound clip I played in that section (it speeds up as there are fewer meteoroids onscreen). The released version only has 2 of these notes, and it sounds really weird. Next week on the show I'll be yakking about Gyruss and James Bond 007 by Parker Brothers. Upcoming games include Codebreaker, Flag Capture and Video Chess by Atari; Title Match Pro Wrestling and Skateboardin' by Absolute; Pac-Man by Atari; Magicard and Video Life by CommaVid, and Submarine Commander (Sears exclusive) and Video Pinball by Atari. Even suckier than before! This time, we bring you tons of background noise, not to mention the fact that Towel's microphone was malfunctioning and said everything two seconds after he did! Here's the only remotely interesting part: We interviewed Adan Resendiz of The Meteoroids (myspace.com/themeteoroids)! Highlights of the interview include the naming of their new song and the possibility of a Meteoroids chatroom! So, if for no other reason than for the interview, check out our sucky podcast! As a sidenote, something got messed up so that we're talking really slow. We're working on the problem as best we can, and it should be fixed before the end of the day, so check back soon!
