We're kicking off Season 11 this week with a look back to the end of the "Disco Years"--1979! But there was still a lot of great rock 'n roll as we rounded out the '70s (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Pat Benatar, Bruce Springsteen, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, The Cars to name a few!)...we'll also be kicking off some brand-new topics this season, including one we've been looking forward to for a long time, "Best Intros." Enjoy!

Today on Too Opinionated, we talk to Nashville based Alt Country rockers The Midnight Revival about their debut single “Feels So Good” dropping Nov 3rd everywhere. Formed by veteran musicians/producers Adam Sizemore & Chris Bragg, together they bring in some of the most talented musicians greater Nashville has to offer. A nod to the the greats who paved the way, such as The Allman Brothers Band, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Eagles, Neil Young, Black Crowes, Chris Stapleton & more while adding in their own special blend of ingredients to create their fabulous sound. The instrumentation, arrangements and multiple part harmonies create an enjoyable blend of 60's and 70's nostalgia, seasoned with a raw modern edge. As Chris and Adam can detest from living their own lives on the edge of excess and addiction, "Feels So Good" serves as a cautionary tale about excess and the fine line of getting ahead of oneself or over doing it. As Chris and Adam state, “We have a take no prisoners approach but, also don't want people to be taken prisoner by their own choices or their individual lifestyles. So, take that chance. Do that thing. Take that trip. But, be present for it. Make no excuses. Make no apologies because it FEELS SO GOOD!”

At the time they released their 2nd album in 1978, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers were a struggling band hoping to break through. They had plenty to prove, and there was still a punky edge to their sound– clearly evident on the first single from the album, “I Need To Know”. At a tight two-minute-and-twenty-six-seconds, there's no fat on this track– just a great song, a taste of the brilliant music to come.“I Need To Know” (Tom Petty) Copyright 1977 Almo Music Corp (ASCAP) — This show is just one of many great Rock Podcasts on the Pantheon Podcasts network. The Slamfest Podcast brings the premier rock concert pregaming experience from the parking lot to the podcasting airwaves. Episode 79 - Brad saw Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers for the third time in four years...interestingly enough, in three different metro areas and three different venues. This time it was at Nissan Pavilion in Bristow, VA on 7/17/02. After he goes through his brief background with the opener, The Brian Setzer Trio, he reviews the show and compares the setlists from the three Petty tours he saw in '99, '01 and '02. For the Band on the Bill Spotlight, Brad discusses and reviews Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' eleventh studio album, The Last DJ, which had not been released at the time of this show, even though they played three tracks from it during the tour. After a Slamfest Tip of the Week, he is faced with a "Which Side are you On?" - Side 1 or Side 2 off of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers sixth studio album, Southern Accents, from 1985.Music in this episode by:Netherlands Symphony OrchestraBrian SetzerTom Petty & The HeartbreakersBlack SabbathKissOzzy OsbourneVisit the Slamfest Podcast online at: https://slamfest-podcast.simplecast.comRequest to join the Slamfest Podcast private Facebook page here:https://www.facebook.com/groups/slamfestpodcastE-mail us at : slamfestpodcast@gmail.com
Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Ann Marie Snyder, daughter of journalist, news anchor and talk show host Tom Snyder who will soon be the topic of a documentary of his life, called Tom Who? Known primarily as the host of his late night program, The Tomorrow Show in the 1970s and his Late, Late Show with Tom Snyder in the 1990s, Tom Snyder was a charismatic, deep-thinking, irreverent and ethical personality who pioneered the long form, single subject interview on American television beginning in the early 1970s. Unlike say Johnny Carson or Merv Griffin (or even Steve Allen or Ernie Kovacs), Snyder considered himself a journalist first. His interviews with everyone from Charles Manson to John Lennon, Johnny Rotten, Kiss, Henry Miller and Howard Stern were either casual conversations you could slip into like a soft pair of slippers or occasionally cantankerous affairs, usually done with a cigarette in hand and a hearty laugh. Snyder loved his audience and his audience loved him. Frequent call-in guests to his three-hour radio show in the 1980s were Sherman Helmsley, Robert Blake and some guy from Indiana who turned out to be David Letterman. We talk to Ann Marie about her dad and we hear stories about everything from how she was forbidden to visit the 9th floor where Saturday Night Life taped at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, how her dad and Neil Young bonded over their mutual love of Lionel Trains and how her dad refused to allow her to see Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers at Madison Square Garden when guest and original Tom Petty drummer Stand Lynch gave Ann Marie two tickets and use of the band limo to the gig at age 15.It's a great conversation with Ann Marie as we talk about her dad, who hated network interference, loved a stiff drink and was quite possibly the Godfather of the podcast as we know it today. And so as Tom might say, "Fire up a colortini, sit back, relax, and watch the pictures, now, as they fly through the air." This is the Rarified Heir Podcast.

After discussing his background with Jackson Browne, he reviews the concert. The Band on the Bill Spotlight finds him looking at the two compilations Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers released prior to this show - the Greatest Hits in 1993 and Anthology: Through the Years in 2000. He discusses the track listings on both and suggests some changes he would've made to each one. After a Slamfest Tip of the Week, he's faced with a "Which Side are you On?" - Side 1 or 2 off of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers second studio album, You're Gonna Get It!, from 1978.Music in this episode by:Netherlands Symphony OrchestraTom PettyTom Petty & The HeartbreakersJackson BrowneJohn MellencampKissBlack SabbathOzzy OsbourneVisit the Slamfest Podcast online at: https://slamfest-podcast.simplecast.comRequest to join the Slamfest Podcast private Facebook page here:https://www.facebook.com/groups/slamfestpodcastE-mail us at : slamfestpodcast@gmail.com

We had the pleasure of interviewing The Vegabonds over Zoom video! The Nashville-based alternative southern rock band—THE VAGABONDS will celebrate the release of their new album, Sinners and Saints, this Friday, September 24th, 2021, with a showcase spot at this year's AmericanaFest in Nashville.Produced by Grammy-nominated Tom Tapley [Mastodon, Blackberry Smoke] – who did the honors on the last two Vegabonds releases – the determinedly upbeat Sinners and Saints expands the group's southern rock pallet and jam band pedigree to explore funky, keyboard-driven blues-pop in first single, “Can't Deal” before reaching new limits with the intersection of country, soul and rock in “Heartache and a Memory,” and even some Fleetwood Mac-style grooves in “Feels Right” — the latter a co-write from their close friend and songwriter and jack-of-all-trades Ross “Brother” Beasley. It was in May of last year that The Vegabonds recorded their last new music, a live EP, recorded during the first full-band live stream to take place during lockdown. After a two- month quarantine, this was the first time the quintet was able to play together, making it the longest span of time the band had gone in a decade, without playing a show or even being in the same room together. The result, The Vegabonds Live from West End Sound, was released this past March. Their last studio album, V, was released in early 2019 to much critical acclaim with Popmatters declaring, “…the album fires on all cylinders with a combustible combination of tub-thumpin alt-country, searing rock riffs and robust but heartfelt lyrics that will help ease the pain.” While The Deli Nashville said of the new music, “...Fans of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, the Allman Brothers, or Springsteen will rave about V…”The Alabama-born, Tennessee-bred Southern rock band, The Vegabonds got their start in Alabama, after meeting while attending Auburn University in 2009 and playing the college circuit across the Southeastern United States. Their popularity quickly burgeoned to the point where they found their fans singing along word-for-word to their first hits like “Georgia Fire” and “Shaky Hands.” From Ole Miss to South Carolina, students buzzed about The Vegabonds authentic sound and their seemingly effortless ability to bring the house down. Through word of mouth, the group's fan base rapidly grew, and the guys learned they had something distinctive with their eclectic mix of Southern Rock, Country, and earnest songwriting. Their DIY efforts delivered three full-length albums and an EP before partnering with Blue Élan Records.THE VEGABONDS are Daniel Allen (Lead vocals/songwriter), Richard Forehand (Lead guitars/vocals), Paul Bruen (bass), Beau Cooper (keyboards/vocals/songwriter) and Bryan Harris (drums)We want to hear from you! At the Hollywood Bowl, California on September 25th 2017 the final song of the final concert of the Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers 40th Anniversary tour was, almost inevitably, "American Girl", the classic from the bands 1976 debut album. Seven days later Thomas Earl Petty was dead. When Petty died, we lost one of the great singer-songwriters of our era. His songs touch people of all ages and possess a timeless quality which will ensure they will live on for years to come. Petty's music speaks of freedom and rebellion, of doing what you want to do, of not compromising your integrity, and, fundamentally, of speaking the truth. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers evolved from a fledgling rock'n'roll band from Gainesville, Florida into becoming an American music institution, being incorporated into the Hollywood Rock 'n' Roll Hall Of Fame in March 2002. Most people have heard the big hits; "Free Fallin'", "Refugee", among others. But there is so much more to enjoy in Petty's extensive back catalogue. "Tom Petty Every Album, Every Song" delves into every aspect of Petty's 40-year recording career album by album and song by song to uncover the extraordinary consistency and quality of this much missed musician.Richard James immersed himself in music as soon as he got his first real six string at the age of ten. Previously chained to a desk for a living, he managed to escape and, armed with a music degree from the Open University and a Licentiate Diploma in Classical Guitar from the Royal School of Music, he now roams the East Midlands as a freelance guitarist and music teacher. He lives with his wife in Leicestershire. So, rather than getting too carried away in the studio (as most do), Garrisi snatched up a group of four diverse and seasoned musicians that Garrisi knew from BBQ jam sessions at his L.A. home studio. L.A. jazz/rock drummer Sean Rosen took on the role of percussionist, Australian native Phil Horvath jumped on keys, bass and guitar, Anthony Leone (Garrisi's cousin) took place on guitar and bass and multi-instrumentalist and New York native Andy Swan added his textures. One major requirement was that all members must know how to sing and sing well. Due to the vocal talent of every member of Scores, harmonies are plentiful, grabbing influences from The Beach Boys, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Traveling Wilburys and Wilco. The Scores sound brings a variety although firmly rooted in the Los Angeles Laurel Canyon sound as well as classic rock and alt-country similar to fellow acoustic rockers Band of Horses.”

Shane and Raborn are joined by their first guest, still disagreeing, and not even sure how to pronounce certain words.
Born Thomas Earl Petty in Gainsville, Florida in 1950, Tom Petty quit high school at the age of 17 to join southern-rock group Mudcrutch. Moving to LA, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers were formed in 1975 out of the remnants of Mudcrutch, and the rest is history.
