Because we're readers and whatnot, this week we get literate on y'all and discuss some of our favorite rock n' roll memoirs. Our Third Lad knows a thing or two about great rock memoirs, because he just published one...singer, songwriter, guitar hero, baseball aficionado, and now author...Steve Wynn from The Dream Syndicate! His memoir, I Wouldn't Say It If It Wasn't True, is out now from Jawbone Press, covering his earliest days as a kid in LA falling in love with music, and down the road that took him to and through the first era of The Dream Syndicate. As a companion to the book, Fire Records simultaneously released Steve's first new solo album in 14 years, Make It Right, featuring songs that were inspired by the process of writing his memoir and reflecting on his life, from his beginnings in "Santa Monica" to present days on "Roosevelt Avenue". Steve is currently touring the eastern part of the US, with west coast and European dates to follow in early 2025, promising "a night of songs and stories" that you won't want to miss. Keep up on the latest news at https://stevewynn.net. During our conversation, we also cover: The Paisley Underground - the LA neo-psych scene that also spawned The Bangles, Three O'Clock, The Rain Parade, Green on Red, The Long Ryders! The lasting legacy of their classic 1982 debut The Days of Wine and Roses! What's in store for the out of print Dream Syndicate records Medicine Show (1984) and Ghost Stories (1988)? The 21st century return of the Dream Syndicate! Living with a drummer! (Don't worry, it's his wife Linda Pitmon, not Tommy Lee...) Little Steven's Underground Garage Cruise! Baseball! His supergroup The Baseball Project with Linda Pitmon, Scott McCaughey from Young Fresh Fellows / The Minus 5 and Mike Mills and Peter Buck from R.E.M. Also, who is Steve rooting for during the 2024 World Series? You won't want to miss this...and we wouldn't say it if it wasn't true. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Los Angeles 1983. While the hair hunx were leaving leather pant ass prints on the hoods of laundromat dryers, bands of the Paisley Underground scene were quietly cranking out sixties-style jingly-jangly psychedelia across town. The Rain Parade were the shortest-lived of all the P.U. bands, but their debut album Emergency Third Rail Power Trip helped garden just as much musical fruit of the future as it did pay tribute to the past.

You can keep your dreams under wraps or unleash them into the world. For the musicians who comprise Dream Phases, holding back their musical visions has not been an option. Conceived in the private recesses of their L.A. home base, the band has expanded outwards by drawing upon the rich sonic heritage of West Coast pop/rock and skillfully reimagining it for the 21st Century.  But beyond its finely wrought sound and texture, there's an intensely personal quality to the work they create together. The dreams they explore transcend mere craft and calculation.Emerging from the City of Angels' neo-psychedelic rock scene in 2017, Dream Phases reflects California's natural splendor and adventuresome inner spirit in its music. The earthy-yet-exalted sounds of the Byrds, the Beach Boys and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – as well as latter-day artists like the Rain Parade, Elliott Smith and Autolux – figure into the band's family tree. While this lineage is worth noting, what comes through in the band's latest work is an individual approach that translates the experiences of its members into something undeniably compelling. Dream Phases' initial flowering was as a solo project by Brandon. After gaining a wealth of experience working with such notable L.A.-area combos as Blank Tapes, the Relationship, Levitation Room and Nacosta, he decided to fully develop the songwriting side of his talents on his own. What began as a homebrewed project quickly turned into a collaborative stew as brother Shane and compadre Keveen helped him develop his compositions into a full-blown sound. Thanks for listening!!! Julia Blaukopf is not afraid to think big, particularly when it comes to her photographs. She's also not afraid of blurring the lines between fine art and commercial enterprise. Equal parts photographer, designer, visual artist, and entrepreneur, Julia is the founder of Fotografica—an arts-products venture with the goal of re-envisioning options for photography and photo-based products. Top shot © Julia Blaukopf In this week's podcast, Julia leads us along her inspiring path—from her early days working with alternative processes and forging relationships with crafts people to her latest collaborations with architects, designers, and developers in the creation of architectural-scale commissions and custom photo-based installations. When collaborating with professional partners and clients on huge projects, psychology is key, which we discuss in detail. Blaukopf also describes the critical importance of seeking out the best printers and installers. Besides a command over technical details such as sound absorption, color fading, and bubbling, she sheds light on lesser-known yet equally essential construction issues such as fire codes. In addition to Blaukopf's commercial work, she is also a documentarian with a passion for women's empowerment and social justice. Towards the end of our chat she describes her work in that realm, offering insights about connecting with non-profits, and sharing stories through photography that have the ability to galvanize change. California's Rain Parade were one of the key bands of the Paisley Underground, the name given to indie bands like the Bangles and the Dream Syndicate who were focusing on melody and steeped in Big Star and the Byrds. Their '83 debut is still a masterwork of any genre. After switching to a major label, the usual challenges ensued and the band ceased, though the members all went on to other projects. This summer sees the release of the first Rain Parade album in 38 years, Last Rays of a Dying Sun, and it might be their strongest yet. Matt and Steven join us to discuss what motivated the new album, their collaboration process, the passing of Steven's brother and original member David Roback who went on to form Mazzy Star, and much more. It'll be hard to knock this album off my best of the year list. Enjoy!  www.patreon.com/thehustlepod www.flatironrecordings.com

arlo is a central TX based songwriter with an anchor in NYC. The debut release of his 2018 self-titled LP record was co-written and produced by Houston-based producer, Eric Jarvis, at "crushpad productions." The 10-song true story and expression of love then loss was a dramatically vulnerable Americana Pop record written and recorded by Aaron Long (arlo) alongside Jarvis. This began a relationship with the powerhouse music producing duo, brothers Kristian Bush and Brandon Bush (Sugarland, Dark Water) and renowned Atlanta-based studio engineer Tom Tapley (Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen, Train, Wallflowers) and plans were set in motion to record the follow-up EP in Atlanta, which is set to be released in Summer 2022. arlo's anticipated follow-up EP “Lonely Soldier” is set to release in 2022 alongside plans to tour support and develop another batch of dramatic love songs. Hand-picked heavy hitters Benji Shanks (guitar) and Travis McNabb (drums) joined the ATL sessions, and together the team sculpted a carefully realized and economically structured blend of Americana Pop Rock that soars and snaps. Goes well with ELO, John Lennon, Beatles. Follow up singles "Goodbye Picture," "Rain Parade" were released in 2021 along with John Lennon International Award and International Songwriting Competition Finalist "Ingenue." Debut single "New York, Queens" was also a finalist in a separate category the same year. arlo has been featured in numerous music and community platforms including "Rising Star" and "Voyage Magazine." --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/grayson-mask/support

He was always creative and pursued the arts. He got his MBA and then realized that’s not what he wanted. Adam also didn’t want to be forced into a starving artist trope, so he decided to build his own business. He recalls that his father was very embarrassed about his idea but later realized that it really was a business, albeit a very unusual one. Rain Parade special with Matt Piucci in conversation with David Eastaugh Originally called the Sidewalks, the band was founded in Minnesota by college roommates Matt Piucci (guitar, vocals) and David Roback(guitar, vocals) in 1981, while they were attending Carleton College.[3] David's brother Steven Roback (bass, vocals) joined the band shortly thereafter. David and Steven had been in a band called The Unconscious with neighbor Susanna Hoffs (who went on to lead The Bangles, the most famous of the Paisley Underground bands). The band soon added Will Glenn (keyboards and violin) and later Eddie Kalwa (drums). They self-released their debut single, "What She's Done to Your Mind" on their Llama label in 1982. In 1983, they released their debut album, Emergency Third Rail Power Trip, on the Enigma/Zippo label. Critic Jim DeRogatis would later write in his book Turn on Your Mind: Four Decades of Great Psychedelic Rock (2003) that "Emergency Third Rail Power Trip is not only the best album from any of the Paisley Underground bands, it ranks with the best psychedelic rock efforts from any era", with uplifting melodies offset by themes that were "dark and introspective." According to DeRogatis, the album showcased "the Robacks' ethereal vocals, Eddie Kalwa's precise drumming, Will Glenn's colorful sitar, violin, and keyboard accents, and an intricate, chiming, but droney two-guitar attack that picks up where the Byrds left off with 'Eight Miles High.'"

Heading into the Labor Day weekend we have a top notch episode to deliver! Opening Salvo - Skinny dippin' in the oil o joy! Set 1: The Yardbirds fly in for some fun and games with "Little Games" offa the LP of the same name....Jimmy Page's debut LP with the 'birds' and not a bad cut on it! Page's "sloppy drunk" guitar is the star here.. *Dr Jack Van Impe with a public service announcement on the dangers of R&R The Sopwith Camel with "Frantic Desolation"...The Camel were one of the early San Fran groups to score a hit song with "Hello Hello" a novelty ditty that holds up to this day. Peter Kraemer's vocals and Norman Mayell's drums along with the guitars of Terry MacNeil and William "Truckaway" Sievers steal the show. Trader Horne was really a duo consisting of Judy Dyble & Jackie McAuley...Dyble was formerly with Fairport Convention and a brief demo recording stint with King Crimson while MaAuley cut his r&r chops with Them and later The Belfast Gypsies...both holding a high place in my record collection. *Dr. Jack Van Impe checks in again with some more of his take on "rock and roll music" I probably have 10-15 of Jack's LP's....I have fond memories of watching his weekly TV show where his eschatological sermons haunt me to this day....and lets not forget the Doc's foil Rexella Van Impe…..yikes! Willie Nelson from 2003....with a Mickey Newbury song "Just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in"....I love this song no matter who's doing it and it's tailormade for Willie.... Set 2: Love....the great band from LA that rocked my world when I was poppin' pimples in high school...."You I'll be following" ….indeed. Alice Cooper when Alice Cooper was a band and not a person with "Shoe salesman"....terrific out of place cut on their 2nd offering before they became Vincent Damon Furnier backing band. Alice is one of the good guys always helping out his band when they wanted to leave the nest....kudos to AC. The Onion Radio News with a hysterical report on the Cicadas and the Red Hot Chili Peppers... English Beat..."Best friend"...great UK band from the early 80's... Earl pays homage to the Chuckster...Chuck Berry with my favorite CB song "Too much monkey business" Set 3: "Not so sweet Martha Loraine".....ahhhh when I hear this song I think of an girl from the Jersey Shore who used to come knocking on my door late at night when she was lonely...Martha... Amy Rigby writes great songs and should be better known....."Believe in you" is one of them. Rusty & Doug [Kershaw] "Hey Mae" one of my favorite 45's that took a while to track down a clean one. And The Youngbloods with a classic "Darkness Darkness" / Elephant Mountain...what a way to end the 60's! Set 4: Wimple Winch - "Save my Soul"...great freakbeat from their 1st record / 45 rpm. They started life as Dee Fenton & the Silhouettes and checked out after 3 great records.... Opal was a psychedelic rock band from Los Angeles, CA. The group was formed by David Roback (ex-Rain Parade) and Kendra Smith (ex-The Dream Syndicate) in 1982 under the name Clay Allison. Changing their name to Opal, they released their sole LP, "Happy Nightmare Baby" in late 1987. Smith left the band the following year mid-tour. Roback went on to form Mazzy Star while Smith later re-emerged as a solo artist. And finishing off the show with the brainchild of Mark Oliver Everett and his Eels...."Soul Jacker pt. 1" Next week will be a DR&R Show favorite recording as I'm going out on the road selling and buying more rekids……...sayanara, Papa-sans and Mama-sans....

Daniel & Ben talk with Liz Scheid, author of the collection of essays, "The Shape of Blue: Notes on Loss, Language, Motherhood & Fear." Liz is also a poet, and she explains how poetry informs her writing. She also talks about the notes that are found at the end of each essay in her collection “The Shape of Blue.” Those notes, far from being purely academic, are almost essays themselves. Liz Scheid will read the poem "Magic" for this week's Poem of the Week. In this week's Poetic License, native El Pasoan Paul Pedroza reads "The Rain Parade." And...Ben & Daniel talk about elegies and epitaphs.
