I've known my guest Wes Robinson for more than a decade, beginning when we started at our new jobs together at PennLive/The Patriot News. When it comes to friends, I tend to seek out fun, critical thinkers. Someone that can challenge me and make me laugh. Someone who will get right to the line and roundly cross it. Someone who has a strong moral character and a diabolical sense of humor. After I left journalism, I worked to bring Wes with me to the Pennsylvania Senate. He joined me at the Capitol for several years. We'd see each other at press conferences, events and at our semi-regular “journalism survivors guild” lunch. Then in 2021, Wes took an amazing opportunity to become the press secretary for the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. During that same time, I decided to run a mile in all then 121 Pennsylvania State Parks. So, as I was discovering the outdoors, Wes was doing much of the same thing professionally. Wes was one of only three people to joined me on my 121 In 21 Challenge.  On a sweltering day in July, Wes ran one mile at seven state parks with me. It was yet another example of him being a great supporter and going the extra mile – so to speak – for a friend. As I was developing this podcast in 2022, I knew its success depended on whether I could get guests. From the very beginning, Wes worked hard to make sure I was able to find guests that would highlight our amazing outdoor spaces. Wes is the sort of person that loves seeing his friends succeed. And he'll do as much as he can to introduce you to the right people, send the email to the right organization or bring you along to a networking event. Not to curry favors. Not to make himself look good. But to make you look good. This podcast would not exist without Wes. His generosity, hard work and legitimacy in the outdoor space is the only reason I can make Hemlocks to Hellbenders. So, what is this episode about? How awesome Wes is? A little. What work is going on at DCNR? Absolutely. But it's also about two friends whose journey of falling in love with the outdoors is connected. It's about what can be done with the right people at the right time. And it's about what we can all do to support each other and our wonderful public lands. On this episode, I speak with Wes Robinson. Wes is the press secretary for the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and my very good friend. Be sure to support our 2025 sponsors:Keystone Trails AssociationPurple Lizard MapsPennsylvania Parks and Forests FoundationSisters' SunflowersSupport the showVisit our website to learn more about the podcast, to purchase merch and to find out about our incredible sponsors. Concentrating on a small section of Pennsylvania gives a view into a history of sightings that's new to us, but gives an interesting snapshot into this phenomena. Send us a Text Message. For thousands of years, the land that would become Pennsylvania was dominated by dense, ancient forests that stretched as far as the eye could see. Towering trees such as white oaks, chestnuts and hemlocks formed a vast green canopy that covered hundreds of miles. The forests were such an integral part of this landscape that it was named Pennsylvania by King Carles the Second. Penn – in honor of Sir William Penn – and Sylvania - from the Latin silva meaning woods. Penn's Woods. But as the Commonwealth grew and the United State developed as a nation, those spectacular trees would become one of Pennsylvania's greatest resources. And after decades of clear cutting millions of acres of forests, only a few hundred acres of old growth forests remained by the early 1900s. Pennsylvania's natural landscape was devastated. Wildfires spread across the land. Riverbanks were eroded and flooding occurred. Our land – effectively destroyed.Something needed to be done. Scientists, conservationists and state officials created strategies to develop and protect forests for future generations. It took the planting of millions of trees, passing legislation and a combined effort of local, state and federal government to bring us to where we are today – a vibrant, thriving Pennsylvania ecosystem. The story of Pennsylvania's natural landscape is one of abundance, exploitation and then rebirth. And I have never seen that story told better than by the Pennsylvania Lumber Museum.Located in Ulysses, this awesome museum is dedicated to preserving the history and heritage of Pennsylvania's lumber industry. It's a place where history comes alive through hands-on exhibits, live demonstrations, and a deep dive into the lives of the people who worked in one of Pennsylvania's most significant industries. On this episode, I speak with Josh Roth. Send us a Text Message. The vast majority of Pennsylvania's state parks are easy to drive to. That's one of the reasons our parks are so accessible to residents and visitors. They're located on paved roads and can often be found just a few minutes from a highway. But then there are parks that are not so easy to get to. They're the ones that can only be explored using gravel roads. Leaving the smooth pavement behind and venturing onto gravel roads is like stepping into a different world, especially when heading toward the hidden gems of state parks. And on this episode, our adventure begins in Centre County. Gravel roads lead to the heart of two state parks in particular – Poe Paddy and Poe Valley State Parks. The rugged terrain and sometimes challenging gravel roads reveal these secluded spots that paved roads simply can't reach. To the north is Poe Paddy State Park, a trout angler's paradise. To the south is Poe Valley State Park, a rugged mountain getaway. Their close proximity giving visitors a chance to explore two great parks in a day. Send us a Text Message.Standing on the shore of Lake Arthur in Moraine State Park, you'd never think the area was the site of massive deforestation, coal mining and gas drilling practices that scarred the landscape for decades. But it is. In the 1800s, farmers cleared the forests and drained the swamps that would one day be Moraine State Park. Materials such as sand, gravel, limestone, clay and shale were mined and sold off. Later, oil and gas well were drilled. When they ran dray, they were abandoned. As a result of these efforts, much of the park area lost its topsoil and many streams were polluted with abandoned mine drainage. Luckily, someone came to help.Dr. Frank Preston formed the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy to purchase land to recreate the glacial landscape and preserve open space. The former Pennsylvania departments of Forests and Waters and Mines and Mineral Industries helped to reclaim the mistreated land. To look at it now, you would have never thought that this stunning 16,725-acre park was in such bad shape less than 100 years ago. On this episode, I interview Brian Flores. On April 8, 2024 Pennsylvanians will have the opportunity to see something special. Something that's not been seen in our commonwealth since January 1925. – nearly 100 years ago. From about 3:15 to 3:20 the moon will pass between the Earth and the sun, blocking the sun's light. A total solar eclipse. This eclipse will cross 15 states in North America – including Pennsylvania - from the Southwest to the Northeast. While this awe-inspiring event will be visible in much of Pennsylvania, the most spectacular view will be in the eclipse's path of totality. The path is the track of the moon's shadow across the Earth's surface. In the eclipse's path of totality, visitors will see the sun totally eclipsed by the moon. This path will cross a portion of northwest Pennsylvania, including Erie, Crawford, Warren, and Mercer counties. For Pennsylvanians who find themselves outside of the path of totality, they will see a partial solar eclipse. Similar to what Pennsylvanians saw during the 2017 eclipse. On this episode, I speak with Susan Schenck to the podcast. It's difficult for me to pick what I like most about Black Moshannon State Park. It's a struggle I face every time I recommend this wonderful park to friends - which is often. I'll go from talking about the incredible camping and cabin opportunities to swooning about the park's lake and bog. Then I get going about the abundance of wildlife. And then the hiking trails. And then the hunting and fishing. Then I realize 30 minutes have gone by and the person I've been talking to stopped caring about 25 minutes ago. Black Moshannon truly has something for everyone. Despite it being about two hours from where I live, I've probably spent more time in Black Moshannon than any other park. And I keep being pulled back there year after year. And every time I think I've seen everything.Every time I think I've experienced everything Black Mo has to offer, it reveals another secret. It's the spring of 1858. Colonel Edwin Drake from New York is hired by the Seneca Oil Company to investigate suspected oil deposits in Titusville, Pennsylvania. While the existence of petroleum oil was known, there no considerable market for the material. After months of work, Drake had little to show for his efforts. Undeterred, Drake took out a $500 loan to continue his operation. Then, on August 27th 1859, Drake changed the world. While drilling on an island in Oil Creek at a depth of 69.5 feet, he had struck oil.The words - “They've struck oil!” – roared through the valley as crowds gathered to see the crude oil being hand pumped to the surface and into a bathtub. The Drake Well was the first commercial oil well in the United States. It led to the world's first oil boomThis monumental discovery would play a pivotal role in the birth of the American oil industry. The rural wooded area surrounding Oil Creek would go on to be used for searching for black gold that would fuel the industrial revolution.160-plus years after the discovery of oil, the property is now known as Oil Creek State Park. The park is a living museum, preserving the remnants of historic oil derricks, drill sites, and the remains of the industry that forever altered the course of American history. On this episode I speak with David Hallman. Whether you're hiking ancient forests or picnicking in an urban park, birds are all around us. From the common pigeon on a Philly stoop to a bald eagle soaring above the Susquehanna River, the avian world is vast in Pennsylvania.Birding is the observation of birds in their natural habitats. Often seen as a hobby for old fogies, the activity has gotten a boost of interest and young blood as a result of the pandemic. When we were required to self-isolate and avoid travel, people found birding as a way to explore the natural world in their own backyards. With binoculars in hand and with an acute ear, Pennsylvania birders have the opportunity to identify hundreds of bird species without every traveling outside of the Commonwealth. From Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, new birders are exploring our shared outdoor spaces. This growing hobby now has roots in places and communities that have not been represented in the past. Black and brown, LGBTQIA plus and impaired communities are forming their own birding groups, clubs and organizations. They are showing that birding is a hobby for everyone, everywhereAnd for this episode, I'm thrilled to speak to one of those people that are making birding and the outdoors more inclusive and accessible for all Pennsylvanians. When it comes to our parks and forests, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources can only do so much. There's too much trail maintenance, invasive species removal, education programs and other things that must be done to complete it allThat's where the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation steps in. Since 1999, the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation has acted as the official non-profit partner of the Commonwealth's state parks and forestsOver the course of decades, the Foundation has built an impressive volunteer base, funded innovative programs in education and recreation, worked with conservation partners and spoken out in support of our public lands. After running a mile in all 121 state parks in 2021, the Parks and Forests Foundation was the first organization I reached out to to start volunteering. I wanted to give back to the park system that opened my eyes to the incredible beauty I experienced. I've now been volunteering with the organization for over two years, and I cannot recommend it enough. Our participation in the natural world cannot only be take, take, take. We must give back. We must be engaged stewards of our environment. Spend one less weekend hiking or camping and spend it giving back. I promise you, you won't regret it. As has been proven to me time and time again, time spent in service, is time well spent.  On this episode, I speak with Marci Mowery. Hello everyone and welcome to Episode Sixty Seven!  It's the end of July and I hope all of you remain safe and healthy out there. As always, I want to thank all of the patrons of the show – we would not be kicking off a third season without you and I appreciate your support.  To others in the listening audience, if you like the show, please consider supporting it via the So Much Pingle Patreon page. You can support the show for as little as three buck a month – less than a fancy cup of coffee!  You can also support the show via one-time contributions via PayPal or Venmo (please contact me via email to somuchpingle@gmail.com). Many of you have heard my interview with Nick Burgmeier about his work with hellbenders in Indiana.  That was Episode 8, way back in season 1, and I didn't just pull Nick's name out of a hat for that interview.  I had the privilege of helping out with hellbender surveys as far back as 2007, with my buddies Don Becker and Greg Stephens, and little did I know that all of that preliminary work would lead to the current hellbender raise-and-release project going on in Indiana.  And to provide just a bit more detail, these are young adult hellbenders that are being released, they are raised from eggs collected in the wild in Kentucky and Ohio.  This is necessary because Indiana hellbenders are in trouble – the state has a small population of adult hellbenders and if there are any eggs being produced, they haven't been located.   Thankfully these days there's a lot of cooperation between various agencies in states with hellbenders, so there's a lot of dedicated work to keep these awesome creatures in as many rivers as possible. This show was recorded in the field and since I knew we would be spending time in the water, I didn't use my standard field rig.  I captured everything on my Zoom HN4 recorder, which is my backup recorder these days.  I used the unit's built-in omni-directional microphone and so I captured everything – water noises, buckets, lots of banter and yakking, and sometimes multiple conversations happening in parallel.  But I was able to record the event as it happened, and there's a lot of running commentary from Nick and others that help to set the scene, and all of the banter – well, that's just a lot of happy people taking part in a joyous event. Acknowledgements:  First of all, special thanks to my friend Nick Burgmeier – Project coordinator and all-around good guy, and Marci Skelton, Nature Nick's spouse and his number one fan. Shelby Roberts – AKA Bender Baby Mama, thanks for all of your work and for talking with me. Summer Brown, Madison Phillips and Zach Truelock were on hand to make sure everything went smoothly, and let's not forget Thomas Coggeshall, holding down the fort back at the lab. I want to also thank Jarrett Manek for transporting us around and for the great behind the scenes tour at O'Bannon Woods. Other witnesses for this event include Don Becker, Greg Stephens, Justin Michels, Jeff and May Faircloth, John Burris and Jeremiah Jonothan.  It was great to be there with you all. Thanks for listening everyone! And as always, please keep the comments and suggestions coming, and please take time to rate the show on your podcast platform! The show email is somuchpingle@gmail.com, and there's also a So Much Pingle group on Facebook, for discussion, comments, feedback, suggestions, herp confessions, pet names for Hellbenders, tips for herping better, etc. Cheers! The guys are getting back on track from Hey Ed's absence last week. A quick review of WWE's latest pay-per-view, "Hell In A Cell" kicks things off. Then it's the first of two trips down to the drive-in. The first trip to the "Last Drive-In" covers the "double feature" of "Slaughterhouse" and Dario Argento's classic, "Tenebrae". Next up, as the guys continue to get caught up on their topics, is the huge review of AEW's "Double or Nothing 2022". Then, it's the second trip down to the "Last Drive-In". This visit covers "Monster Club" with Vincent Price and the awesome indy flick, "Hellbender"! As usual, the "waterfall of goofs", G R' G, closes out the show. Enjoy responsibly. Hellbenders are North America's largest salamanders, living in rivers and growing to an incredible length of over two feet. Eastern newts are tiny and terrestrial, but both are susceptible to a fungal pathogen called Bsal. While Bsal has yet to make an appearance in the global hotspot of salamander diversity that is North America, it has wreaked havoc on populations in Europe, so biologists worry its impact could be even worse if it does. Eastern newts' susceptibility to Bsal coupled with their notable mobility mean they could act as “super-spreaders” of Bsal if the fungus ever gets to North America. For hellbenders, which are already listed as endangered and suffer from habitat degradation, a new pathogen is hardly good news.  On this final episode of the first season we speak with Dr. Becky Hardman from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, and Dr. Anna Longo of the University of Florida about these fascinating and unique species, and discuss what is being done to prepare for a Bsal invasion that experts say is inevitable. More on this topic: Super-spreaders: How the curious life of a newt could ignite a pandemic Hellbenders threatened by disease & stress Mongabay's article series on Bsal is here United States Bsal Task Force website To hear Part 1 of this season, see, "Mongabay Explores the Great Salamander Pandemic, Part 1: Are we ready?" -- Part 2 discussed the amazing diversity of salamanders, "Why are salamanders so diverse in North America?" This week’s topic, Hellbenders Salamanders. Also called snot otter, lasagna lizard, devil dog, mud-devil, Allegheny alligator, and mud dog, Hellbenders are the largest salamanders of North America. But, first we talk about the stupidest things humans do, like laundry, and somehow the topic turns to cults, especially one of the most famous, called People Temple led by Jim Jones. The origin of the name "hellbender" is unclear, and probably derived from colonists who did not think these salamanders are as cute as Jennifer thinks they are. Despite misconceptions, Hellbenders are not poisonous; they just produce a lot of slime to protect themselves. Considered a "habitat specialist," Hellbenders have adapted to fill a specific niche within a very specific environment, and their presence shows a healthy ecosystem. So, yes, the males may like to cannibalize eggs, but that isn’t want is causing them to be endangered. That is, of course, is humans fault and the stupid Trump administration. MUSIC – ~8 sec – instrumental This week, we celebrate Halloween with original music and with some water-related passages from fiction and non-fiction chosen for the haunting holiday.  Have a listen to the music for about 30 more seconds. MUSIC  - ~31 sec – instrumental You’ve been listening to part of “A Little Fright Music,” composed for Virginia Water Radio by Torrin Hallett, a graduate student at Lamont School of Music in Denver.  The music sets the stage for hearing five passages that invoke water as scary, supernatural, mysterious, or simply imaginative.  All are excerpted from quotations published on the Web site GoodReads.com. From Stirring the Mud: On Swamps, Bogs, and Human Imagination, by Barbara Hurd: “Swamps and bogs are places of transition and wild growth, breeding grounds, experimental labs where organisms and ideas have the luxury of being out of the spotlight, where the imagination can mutate and mate, send tendrils into and out of the water.” From Lifemaker, by Dean F. Wilson: “Something pressed against the window, nudging the submarine.  Its hide was almost as dark as the waters around it, but its scales glistened from the light inside the room.  Jacob badly wanted to douse the oil lamp, to hide inside a different darkness, but he had a feeling that any change inside the room, any step, any dimming of a light, any sound, might be like a beacon to the beast outside.” From The Mere Wife, by Maria Dahvana Headley: “It's water from beneath the mountain, and it’s full of the taste of bones and rocks. She's bought five cases of bottled to keep from having to serve this, even in ice-cube format. There's something awful about it. It feels full of ghosts.”  From Into the Drowning Deep, by Mira Grant: “What you have to understand about the mermaid legend is that it's universal.  No matter where you go, the mermaids got there first.  Even inland, if there's a big enough lake, I guarantee you there's a local community with a story about women in the water with beautiful voices who lure men to their deaths.” And finally, from The Tempest, by William Shakespeare: “Full fathom five thy father lies;Of his bones are coral made; Those are pearls that were his eyes:Nothing of him that doth fade,But doth suffer a sea-changeInto something rich and strange.” Thanks to Torrin Hallett for this week’s music, and we close with the final few seconds of “A Little Fright Music.”  Happy Halloween! Mongabay Explores the Great Salamander Pandemic, Part 6: Hellbenders and super spreaders

Hellbenders are North America’s largest salamanders, living in rivers and growing to an incredible length of over two feet. On this episode we speak with Dr. Becky Hardman from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, and Dr. Anna Longo of the University of Florida about these fascinating and unique species, and discuss what is being done to prepare for a Bsal invasion that experts say is inevitable. More on this topic: Super-spreaders: How the curious life of a newt could ignite a pandemic Hellbenders threatened by disease & stress Mongabay's article series on Bsal is here United States Bsal Task Force website To hear Part 1 of this special salamander series, see bonus episode #94, "Mongabay Explores the Great Salamander Pandemic, Part 1: Are we ready?" -- Part 2 (bonus episode #95) discussed the amazing diversity of salamanders, "Why are salamanders so diverse in North America?" This week we travel to North America and learn about one of the largest amphibians in the world, the Hellbender.  Amphibians are incredible animals that have adapted and survived for hundreds of millions of years. Sadly, amphibians are one of the most endangered class of animals on the planet. It is estimated up to 41% of all amphibian species are threatened with extinction. Being one of the largest, Hellbenders and the other giant salamanders of the world are also threatened with extinction. These are incredible and ancient animals that you need to know about. Miranda Bailey and Face2Face host David Peck talk about her new film The Pathological Optimist, truth versus fiction, culpability and the media, hero worship, the Anti-Vax movement, family life and why she’s sometimes not so hopeful. Biography Miranda's first cinematic directorial debut was GREENLIT, a comedic documentary looking at the inherent hypocrisies surrounding Hollywood when trying to "green" a film set which debuted at SXSW in 2010. IFC International and Virgil Films picked it up for distribution. Since then, she directed the award winning narrative short ANOTHER HAPPY ANNIVERSARY which after a successful festival run premiered on Shorts TV and is hosted at Jill Soloway's website Wifey. TV promoting female film makers. Miranda also shot and directed The Behind the Scenes of James Gunn's SUPER and an episode of the web TV series FIRSTS. Miranda's second documentary feature, THE PATHOLOGICAL OPTIMIST, is an intimate portrait of the controversial and discredited Dr. Andrew Wakefield. The documentary premiered on April 20, 2017 at the Manhattan Film Festival as the opening night film and won Best Documentary Feature. It played at the 2017 Downtown LA Film Festival and Bailey won Best Director - Documentary Feature. The film opened in theaters September 2017. Over the last 14 years, Miranda Bailey has produced over 20 films including the Oscar nominated THE SQUID AND THE WHALE, James Gunn's SUPER and the Gotham Award Award-winning THE DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL. Miranda has been nominated twice for the Best First Feature Spirit Award - once in 2017 for Swiss Army Man and once in 2016 for The Diary of a Teenage Girl which she won. As the CEO of Cold Iron Pictures, Miranda recently produced 2016 Sundance U.S. Dramatic Directing Award-winner SWISS ARMY MAN starring Daniel Radcliffe and Paul Dano, Oscar nominated director Joseph Ceder's first English language film NORMAN: THE MODERATE RISE AND TRAGIC FALL OF A NEW YORK FIXER, starring Richard Gere, Michael Sheen, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Dan Stevens, Steve Buscemi and Josh Charles, and Mike Birbiglia's DON'T THINK TWICE, starring Keegan-Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs, Birbiglia, Kate Micucci, Tami Sagher and Chris Gethard. Bailey starred in and produced many other films in a variety of genres including the cult hit DEAD & BREAKFAST, with Jeremy Sisto, Portia de Rossi, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan; the comedy THE OH IN OHIO, with Paul Rudd, Danny DeVito, and Parker Posey; WONDERFUL WORLD, starring Matthew Broderick; AGAINST THE CURRENT, starring Joseph Fiennes and Mary Tyler Moore; SUPER, starring Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page; EVERY DAY, starring Liev Schreiber and Helen Hunt; the 3D horror film HELLBENDERS; the documentary SPINNING PLATES, which was released by her distribution company The Film Arcade, which she cofounded in 2012. Synopsis Who is the man behind the most highly controversial, intensely debated topics in modern medicine? In The Pathological Optimist, director Miranda Bailey brings us a character study of Dr. Andrew Wakefield, one of 13 co-authors of a notorious 1998 paper in the UK medical Journal The Lancet, but who became the very public face of what has come to be known as “The Anti-Vax Movement.” An expat from Britain who currently resides in Austin, Texas, Wakefield allowed Bailey and her team to follow him and his family for five years beginning in 2011 as he fought a defamation battle in the courts against the British Medical Journal and journalist Brian Deer. The results of that case – and the self-reflection, pronouncements, and observations of Wakefield, his legal team, wife, and his children – create a complex and incisive look at one of our era’s most fear-provoking and continuously provocative figures. The Pathological Optimist takes no sides, instead letting Wakefield and the battles he fought speak for themselves. In episode 14, we discuss the big three of giant salamanders–and some possible mystery relatives. The Chinese giant salamander. An orange one. Enormous. Mostly harmless. Just wants to eat a snail. The Japanese giant salamander: The HELLBENDER reverb reverb reverb The Pacific giant salamander. Not as giant but has an angry: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I’m your host, Kate Shaw. This week we’re looking at giant salamanders. Yup. Salamanders are amphibians. Think “wet lizards” or “skinny frogs with tails.” A lot of people think snakes are slimy, but they’re not. Snakes are reptiles and their scales are satiny smooth and dry. Amphibians don’t have scales and they do have slimy skin, which they need to keep moist. Some salamanders are completely aquatic but most live at least part of their lives on land, usually in wet areas. When I was a kid, I used to like turning over rocks in the creek behind our house, because frequently I’d find a salamander underneath. I wouldn’t catch it, just look at it, which is what you should do if you find a salamander—partly because it’s not good to disturb a wild animal that’s just trying to live its life, and partly because salamanders secrete toxins through their skins. The toxins won’t kill you, but if you get any in your eyes or mouth you could be in for some unpleasant symptoms. There are two species of salamander known to be venomous, in a way, but they don’t inject venom with special fangs. When the sharp-ribbed salamander is attacked, it pushes its pointed ribs through tubercules along its sides. The tubercules secrete toxins that coat the rib points, which then pierce right through the salamander’s skin and into its attacker. There are hundreds of salamander species throughout the world, some of them tiny, most of them a few inches long [about 5 or 6 cm], but there are three that are much bigger than that. The biggest is the Chinese giant salamander. The biggest ever found was just shy of six feet long [two meters]. Six feet long! The closely related Japanese giant salamander is almost as big, some five feet long [1.5 meters]. There’s a third giant salamander right here in the southeastern United States where I live, and while at two and a half feet long [76 cm] it’s not nearly as long as its cousins, it has a much better name. The Chinese giant salamander’s local name is infant fish, because some of the sounds it makes remind people of babies crying, which is creepy as heck. The Japanese giant salamander is called the giant pepper fish, because when it’s disturbed it secretes a whitish mucus that smells like pepper. But the North American giant salamander? We call that thing the H E L L B E N D E R. I did try to find audio of the Chinese giant salamander crying. I had no luck, which is probably a good thing actually, because it’s a distress call. I did find this awesome audio of a Pacific giant salamander. Despite the name giant in its name, it’s not very big compared to the other giants, only about a foot long at most [30 cm], but it does have a cute vocalization. [Pacific giant salamander call] (He’s so mad.) The Chinese and Japanese giant salamanders are so closely related that they readily interbreed. We know that because some fool decided to introduce some Chinese salamanders into streams in Japan. Hellbenders are not as closely related to the Asian salamanders. All three of the giant salamanders are endangered, mostly due to habitat loss and pollution. They like clean, swift-moving mountain streams with rocks of just the right size—not too big, not too small. But the Chinese salamanders are also considered a delicacy, so they’ve been overhunted as well. Poaching is a major issue, ironically to stock salamander farms. The adults breed readily in captivity, but farmers haven’t had much success getting captive-born individuals to breed, so they continue to capture adults from the wild.

Southern Appalachian Creature Feature

Once you see a hellbender, you never forget it. Hellbenders are salamanders, but not just any salamanders. They’re big salamanders. Growing up to three feet in rare instances, it’s fairly easy to comes across individuals at least a foot long here in the Southern Appalachians. Despite their size, they’re essentially harmless to humans and are part of a healthy stream ecosystem.

Trinity Alps Giant Salamander Expedition Kickstarter!

Kickstarter Link!http://kck.st/3IloYFLPURPOSE: We are putting this together for a planned scientific expedition to the Trinity Alps to help prove the existence of the hidden giant salamander species that calls the mountains home.SPECEMIN: The Trinity Alps Giant Salamander is cryptid giant salamander that is rumored to live in the mountain ranges of northern California, specifically the Trinity Alps. This giant has been seen in the area since at least the early 1900's all the way up to modern day with some of the more famous encounters being the Frank L Griffith sighting which included 5 of the amphibians all ranging from 5 to 7 feet in length, which would put them at a comparable size of Japanese Giant Salamanders. Also, the Vern Harden sighting which claimed to see large amounts of 4–5-foot salamanders in Hubbard Lake. During the early sightings, the area in which these creatures inhabited was vastly remote, but nowadays it is butting up to the edge of civilization with new construction projects, like resorts and dams on the edge of what is believed to be their remaining range. We believe that this creature still exists today but may very well be on the edge of extinction like many other salamanders in the world. Without proving its existence in the near future, it will probably be added to the ranks of manmade extinct species. DATA COLLECTION: How will we prove the existence of these magnificent creatures? By assembling a team of highly qualified aquatic and salamander experts and applying the most modern surveying techniques for other mysterious giant salamanders around the world. (i.e. Hellbenders, Giant Japanese Salamanders) Some of the surveying techniques we will be using, both physical and laboratory survey methods. The physical survey methods include snorkel surveys to help ID salamander dens and actively guide salamanders to nets. Scuba Diving to survey rock crevices and deep water ROV's. The laboratory surveys will be the most crucial for proving the existence of reproductive populations because larval salamanders are some of the hardest to ID on Earth. The survey method we will be using in this will be a DNA sampling of small amounts of live tissue from larval salamanders in the area that have a high probability of being this cryptic species, but due to the mass amounts of other salamander species in the area, it can be nearly impossible to distinguish between different species with just the naked eye. This may be the reason that some other survey teams came away with no definitive results.CREW: Cryptids of the Corn! Professional Podcaster experts at researching cryptid history, sighting locations, speculative biology and tracking down eye-witness testimonies. Also, having specialties in endangered species surveys and DNA collection. Christian: Professional Wildlife Documentarian. Scuba diving expert. Professional Treasure HunterZach Alley: I'm an ichthyologist, graduated from Miami U with a BA in Zoology in 2015 and an MS in Conservation Biology from the University of West Alabama in 2023. Ive worked with aquatic organisms since 2012, and spend alot of my free time documenting aquatic biodiversity via publication quality portrait photographs of fishes and other aquatic life (crayfish, herps, etc) My most recent research has focused on systematics and phylogenetics and characterizing life history traits and co occurrence between Etheostoma parvipinne and Ambystoma salamanders in the black belt Prarie region of Alabama and MississippiDavid Pounders: My name is David Pounders, and I am a biologist. I was born in Panama City, Panama, but grewup in Northwest Alabama. Ever since I was young, I have been obsessed with animals, mainly reptiles and amphibians. Living in Alabama made this easy as it is easily one of the most biodiverse areas, so it wasn't hard to find different species of snakes, turtles, and other scaly critters. I knew I wanted a career in wildlife conservation but instead of working with reptiles and amphibians I now work with fish. My areas of expertise are Ichthyology, Herpetology, andpopulation genetics. I currently work with nongame species of conservation concern using molecular techniques to aid in understanding these creatures. My main focus is on narrowly endemic as understanding the genetic structure of the species is important to inform conservation managers. I still consider myself a field biologist. To this day I lead and assist field crew teams in doing surveys, population assessments, and habitat assessments. I one day plan to use my skills either in an academic setting or for other entities that aid in the conservation of aquatic species.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/cryptids-of-the-corn/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
