Junior Pottymouth and his hours-old Mariners cap sit in while Patti splits for the beach. Playoff ponderings include the rise of the underdogs, just how many non-baseball things you can do during an 18-inning game and still see most of it, and the lefty vegan pitching for the Hammers. Manny Machado not only being That Shirtless Guy but also learning phrases in Korean to encourage teammate Ha-seong Kim have almost won Pottymouth over. Wil Myers and his wife are already our people, buying celebratory shots in bars for fans all over town. Seattle, where a roof is a reasonable choice, chose to play with it open on Saturday, when Seattle's air quality index was one of the worst in the world. On the other hand, Mariners provided a mirror to the statue of late play by play announcer Dave Niehaus so he could watch the playoff game happening behind his back.Junior Pottymouth questions the MVP take that Aaron Judge was under more pressure than Ohtani this season so that should factor in to voting. Pottymouth thinks that is just fruit salad. The Police Blotter is slimier than usual with what we learn around the sentencing of Eric Kay in the death of Tyler Skaggs. Pottymouth wants to work in a moderately priced side trip to see the Arizona leg of the World Baseball Classic – at least those tickets are already on sale. Jazz will represent Great Britain, and Ken Griffey, Jr. is the hitting coach for Team USA. Winter Ball is getting started – find your streaming service! Today's word of the day is ‘stale' as in stale bread as in unripe as in moldy as in sitting around too long as in the Atlanta Braves and Houston Astros both found themselves down early in their games. The Braves tried to make a comeback against the Phillies but fell a run short. The Astros needed a historic blast from Yordan Alvarez to walk-off against the Mariners. (11:00) Scott Servais chose to pitch Robbie Ray in the 9th inning against Yordan Alvarez. Do you agree with that move? Did this backfire? (17:10) we have a Draymond Green update. He'll be back sooner than most thought. (20:40) We had news of two different sort of freak injuries that will keep pitchers from the Divisional Series. David Robertson got hurt celebrating a Bryce Harper home run by jumping! Phil Maton broke his hand punching a locker angry after a game. WHAT!? Inexcusable. (29:00) Review: Don't Make Me Go. (31:10) So You Wanna Talk To Samson!? Someone asked me about the Padres trying to keep Dodgers fans away from San Diego for the Divisional Series. Hmm. Will it work? (35:45) NPPOD. (39:30) We have an update on Eric Kay, former Los Angeles Angels staffer, he's going to jail. Adnan Syed is getting out of jail. Brett Favre, not going to jail, but should be in jail. The Bums start part one of Episode 0048 crying in their beer over the end of 2022 NFL football, but not before reviewing post season landing spots for former Chicago Bear staffers Ryan Pace, Matt Nagy and possibly a former #1 Draft pick, as well as other key moves around the NFL; talk shifts to NBA basketball and the absolute sham that is the NBA All Star game; Paddy's Xavier Musketeers take a Top 10 team to triple OT; while Juwan Howard sits in the penalty box for the remainder of the regular season due to a dust-up at the end of the Wisconsin vs. Michigan game (Rocky's hot take may not be so popular); NCAA's March Madness slowly starts to take form, as conference championships start next soon; MLB baseball unlikely to start on-time, and Eric Kay's culo is muy, muy itchio (find out why and more). Part two starts with another world-famous (exception: Australia) beer review, thanks to Boston Dough's creativeness procuring another creation from Tree House Brewing in his home state of MA — “Hello Cape Cod” an amazing American IPA that drinks like an ass-kicker but weighs in at 6.7% ABV; the Bums get two global topics out of the way (CDC Guidelines are changing amongst mixed emotions & Fuckface Vlad Putin invades a sovereign nation — the Bums stand with Ukraine); a local Chicago brewery, Twisted Hippo, goes down for the count at the hands of a fire — and close with a shout-out to fellow podcasters “Beerly Football”.Recorded on February 25th, 2022 at B.O.M.'s global headquarters ‘East Bunker' in Chicago, IL USA.
This week we are joined by Los Angeles Times writer Jorge Castillo. We discuss the heartbreaking trial of Eric Kay in the the Tyler Skaggs death. We also what is going on with the MLB lockout and what the future may hold for baseball. All this plus much more.
Last week in a courtroom in Fort Worth, Texas, a jury found Eric Kay, the former Los Angeles Angels communications director, guilty of distributing counterfeit oxycodone pills laced with fentanyl that led to the death of Tyler Skaggs in 2019. Today, The Athletic's Sam Blum tells us some of the key points that were argued in the trial, what we learned in explosive testimony from some of Skaggs's former teammates, and what all of this could say about the impact of the opioid epidemic on Major League Baseball. In this episode, Gage discusses the latest updates from the MLB/Players Union negotiations. As of last Friday, things were grim, thus the discussion of an awesome Super Bowl. The Rams beat the Bengals, but did the refs play a bigger part in the story? Eric Kay, ex-Angels staffer, was sentenced to prison following a trial that had players testify, and what they said was something you'll want to hear. Forced to find the good in the Yankees, Pottymouth is clearly won over by new BF Estevan Florial. Patti gives the nod to impeccably groomed Giancarlo Stanton and his “fricking forearms.” For the Cardinals, Pottymouth flies like an eagle with Edmundo “Mundito” Sosa and Patti cheers Noots-not-boos for Lars Nootbaar. We note that it is the lockout, not CBA negotiations, forcing a delay in spring training games and we catch you up on the latest proposals. We ponder the sheer size of the deal Juan Soto turned down, and wish Mr. Walk-off well. In our Police Blotter, the testimony of Matt Harvey and other players blows open the story of widespread drug use in major league baseball, while Eric Kay is found guilty of supplying the pills resulting in the death of Tyler Skaggs. With football not part of our sports conscious as it was for the last 23 weeks, what will your friendly sports podcast host talk about? I'll get you through these cold winter weeks and warm your sports heart as Episode #239 delivers what you want, need and then some. On deck: (4:36) Ladies & gentleman, the time has come. The pomp and circumstance of the NFL is in our rearview mirror, the fall/winter sports are in full effect, but we have officially entered The Sports Dead Zone, Part 1. I'll discuss what that is, and when we'll be out of it. (7:01) Armageddon continues in the MLB as talks should ratchet up in hopes of a deal being reached between the owners and players. I discuss the three sticking points that's holding up this negotiation, Juan Soto's $350 million dollar offer by the Nationals, but I go deeper by saying what's baseball biggest problem (and what could be done to fix it) even if an agreement comes to pass as early as today. I'll also get into the sentencing of former Angels communications director, Eric Kay, who was responsible in the death of former pitcher, Tyler Skaggs. And Matt Harvey did what while he was a member of the Mets? (28:24) The NBA All-Star Weekend has come and gone as I didn't peep a second of the festivities. I'll take a look ahead of the 'second half', rather 1/3 of the rest of the regular season. I'll get into some of the buzz coming into and out of the break. (Anthony Davis's health, the Lakers big picture for this season, LeBron James's comments on going back to Cleveland, the Lakers long term prospects post LeBron, what Chris Paul's injury means for the Suns, which teams could go deep in the playoffs and how many teams will be in the discussion for an NBA title?) I'll check in on my NBA over/under numbers to date, which isn't close to what I did in the NFL. (45:39) Juwan Howard gets into hot water again as his late game skirmish, striking an assistant coach of Wisconsin will get him suspended a couple of games by the NCAA. Should the University of Michigan suspend him for the remainder of the season? Plus, the rest of the college basketball landscape as March Madness is three weeks away. (51:56) Jack Eichel made his long awaited return to the ice, as he debuted with his new team, the Vegas Golden Knights last Wednesday. He scored his first goal as a Knight in a win over the weekend. Is he the final piece to a championship puzzle? In Pittsburgh, Sidney Crosby reached the lofty 500th goal milestone of his illustrious career. I'll bestow some congratulations on the future Hall of Famer and all time great Penguin. (58:33) Former Dolphins coach, Brian Flores resurfaces back in the league as he was hired as a defensive assistant/linebackers coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Was this a good hire? What is the league thinking about him being back on an NFL sideline? As for college football, the playoff will not expand in the next year or so as many would have hoped. We'll have to wait at least four seasons before a change will be made. (1:04:38) I'll wrap up with some thoughts about the Winter Olympics and the Daytona 500. (1:07:41) And to close out, my Hero and Zero of the Week. When the news hit about Jeremy Giambi's death, it shook the baseball world pretty hard. Not just in a way that makes us sad that someone who left their mark on the game was gone either. His suicide leaves all of us around the game wondering what could have led to such a dark ending. The steroid era ushered in some incredible stories and complicated feelings about players that used. Jeremy's story was very much that way. Between his death and the Eric Kay trial happening almost in tandem, we just had to make an episode talking through one of the game's dirtiest secrets. On today's Episode of Wrighster or Wrong, George Wrighster and Ralph Amsden talk about the conviction of Eric Kay, the Angels employee that was found to have provided Tyler Skaggs with the drugs that resulted in an accidental overdose. What type of precedent does this set and who should people really be mad at over the opioid and fentanyl epidemics? Nick Saban gave some interesting and convicting comments on leadership, calling out the people that didn't stop Henry Ruggs from getting behind the wheel- George and Ralph give their take on his comments. The NFL finds itself in the middle of more management driven drama with the recent settlement over voyeurism involving the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders- George wants to know why certain issues with owners like Jerry Jones and Dan Snyder seem to be swept under the rug. Matthew Stafford is chipping in to help pay for the medical bills of the photographer that fell off the stage during the Rams Super Bowl celebration, but all anyone wants to talk about is his reaction to the fall. Should people be mad at Stafford for his reaction? The College Football Playoff is staying at four teams, and George isn't happy, while Ralph is convinced it doesn't matter for the teams he roots for anyway. Finally, the Arizona State recruiting investigation fallout's latest chapter includes Jayden Daniels hitting the transfer portal, and frustration over whether ASU could have had Spencer Rattler if Jayden had transferred earlier. When Angels' pitcher Tyler Skaggs was found dead in his hotel room in July of 2019, it sent shock waves across baseball. There was an outpouring of grief and sorrow for the loss of a promising young player, teammate, and husband at just 27 years old. But the shock of Skaggs' death was only compounded when Eric Kay, who had been the Angels' own director of communications, was arrested and accused of supplying the oppiods that lead to Skaggs' death. Now, more than two years later, Kay is on trial in federal court, and could face upwards of 20 years in prison if convicted. The trial has also seen testimony from a number of Skaggs' former teammates, including former Mets' ace Matt Harvey, who also acknowledged that he received drugs from Kay. ESPN investigative reporter TJ Quinn joins us from the site of the trial in Fort Worth, Texas to explain what Eric Kay, and baseball at-large, is facing.
Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin' Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space. This week, we begin by discussing the return of Old Timers' Day and getting excited about being able to Remember Some Guys. Then, we talk about Matt Harvey's testimony in the trial of former Angels employee Eric Kay, in which he admitted to using cocaine and oxycodone and said that use of the latter is prevalent in baseball. We also talked about Terry Collins' irresponsible interview, in which he revealed details of Harvey's mental health struggles during his time with the Mets. Next, we discuss the ongoing lockout and the latest in CBA talks, as a timely start to the season hangs in jeopardy. We also cover how minor leaguers in particular are affected by the current lockout. We spend a brief amount of time on Trevor Bauer not facing charges for the allegations of sexual assault against him and on additional allegations of misconduct against Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy. We recommend this column on Bauer from the Los Angeles Times. We also talk about the Olympics and how issues we discuss often on this podcast—exploitation of minors and mental health struggles in sports—are front and center in Beijing. Finally, we wrap things up with Walk-off Wins, where each of us talks about what's making us happy this week, baseball-related or otherwise. The Super Halo Bros. are once again joined by Daniel Garcia, one of the minds behind @halo_haven, the voice of the All Angels Podcast, and soon-to-be new host of Locked On Angels! As the MLB Lockout keeps movement from happening in the majors, we do have newsworthy minor league talk, including Keith Law's Top 100 MLB prospects with appearances from Reid Detmers and Sam Bachman, ranking the Angels the 29th farm system out of 30 (yikes), and Keith's Top 20 Angels prospects. Daniel and the Bros. respond to these rankings and share their thoughts on what this means for our beloved team. (4:39) Then, Jeff Passan of ESPN reported that the MLB owners pitched the idea of eliminating minor league positions from 150 to 120. Mike thinks it makes sense, Jon thinks it's nonsense! (19:38) In more minor league news, Evan Drellich of The Athletic reported that MLB argued against paying players for their time in Spring Training, essentially arguing that players are paid "in experience," and Jon has a few thoughts about that. (26:09) Minor league players have been extra vocal about their seasonal wages and how the "Save America's Past Time" act passed by Congress cut them out of receiving federal minimum wage and the rules about overtime pay, and Daniel and the brothers discuss the perils of not making money for all the work the players put in. (36:25) The Eric Kay trial regarding the passing of Tyler Skaggs has brought some interesting facts to light, as it was revealed just how much the subject of addiction has permeated the game and the clubhouse culture, as Matt Harvey, Mike Morin, Cam Bedrosian, and CJ Cron testified to in the trial this week. **This segment contains discussions about addiction, and if this is a sensitive topic for you personally, please feel free to skip** (47:46) Finally, with Mr. National, Ryan Zimmerman, retiring after a 19-year career, the guys discuss who would be Mr. Angel, and what qualifications should there be for a "Mr. Team"? Tyler Skaggs' criminal trial (45:52) against former Los Angeles Angels' communications director Eric Kay began this week and there are a list of 7 Angels players to be called as witnesses. The defense has named Matt Harvey, former Mets pitcher, as a witness for allegedly being a drug source and giving Percocet to Skaggs. It's been a long, dark, and quiet offseason, as the MLB Lockout has stalled any exciting news about our favorite game, but there is lots to cover regarding the Los Angeles Angels. It all starts with the recent Fangraphs ZiPs Projections as teams currently stand in the middle of the offseason, and Mike and Jon wonder how accurate their projection of a Halos 81-81 2022 season will be. (4:13) We're losing a good one, as José Mota announced his departure from the Angels' broadcasting team. After spending 20 years in red, he'll be going blue, as he's set to join the Dodgers in a broadcast capacity, and the Super Halo Bros. discuss what it means for the team. (16:25) Then, our wish came true; Shohei Ohtani is the cover athlete for MLB The Show 2022! We ran a little Twitter poll to find out what system you guys we'll be playing on, and Jon has very specific plans for this year's game. (22:30) The criminal trial of Eric Kay, former Angels Communications Director has begun in Texas, and witnesses include Matt Harvey, Andrew Heaney, Garrett Richards, and other former Halos who will testify. It's not an easy discussion, but the brothers ask the question; is this an Angels problem or a larger problem within MLB? (30:00) Among this news comes some information regarding the sale of Angels Stadium and the surrounding land, and Jon shares the holdup with the deal which involves the state of California. (43:14) In a bit of lighter news, Mike Trout proves he's still the greatest player in MLB with the recent story of @EvansvilleDevi1 unknowingly critiquing Trout's swing and Trouty sending him some gear! It leads to the question: has MLB forgotten Mike Trout and what he's capable of with his absence last season? (49:38) Finally, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred is calling a press conference on Thursday, and Mike and Jon speculate as to what it may be about. Puppies? Paternity tests? Who knows!
