#301 THE METAL DAYS OF YORE: OUR FORMATIVE METAL YEARS

Metal Nerdery

Play Episode Listen Later May 22, 2025 88:03

“You'll be divorced, alone, and flaccid…” Let's go back a few years, back to a time when we were young and impressionable and just starting out on our respective metal odysseys as fans and purveyors of all things metal, including (but not limited to) the hard rock of our childhood years in the late 70's to the plethora of NWOBHM, thrash, and other classic metal bands we discovered during our teen years in the late 80's and early 90's.  Back to a time when wearing a newly purchased tour shirt from a show the night before to school the next day was a sacred badge of honor, a time when local bands gave out flyers for shows that included “treasure map” style instructions for locating the venue, and a time when we each had our own personal attaché case containing the cassettes we'd recently procured (or otherwise came into possession of) on our unquenchable thirst and unending quest for anything and everything metal.  Imagine what “Miss Piggy with laryngitis” might sound like and remember to never do people dirty, because just like Pepperidge Farms, karma remembers. Get ready for a “crombination” of “skythes…or scythes”, discover some of the most absurdly talented drummers and bassists in the world today, and prepare to behold one of, if not the best, thrash bands from the local scene back in the day when you JOIN US as we travel back in time to THE METAL DAYS OF YORE: OUR FORMATIVE METAL YEARS.   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Help Support Metal Nerdery https://www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast   Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182 Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Follow us on the Socials: Facebook - Instagram - TikTok Email: metalnerdery@gmail.com Metal Nerdery Munchies on YouTube @metalnerderypodcast Show Notes: (00:01): “He's 70…and he's in great shape.” / #DLR / “He started getting a salary and not royalties…”/ MichaelAnthony #VanHalen / #RussellsReflectionsDavidLeeRothEdition / “Apparently he's got a #teenieweenie …”/ “There it is…right there…”/ “I think he's fine…”/ #networth / “He was a 20% member, manager Noel Monk being the 5th…” / ***WARNING: #listenerdiscretionisadvised *** / “Once we hit 6 years, we need to do something…maybe we should do our own version of it…”/ “That makes me 100% flaccid…”/ ***WELCOME BACK TO THE METAL NERDERY PODCAST FROM DEEP WITHIN THE BUNKERPOON!!!*** / “Sounds too much like #MissPiggy with laryngitis…”  (09:40): “I feel like my whole routine is shot…I talked about it too much…”/ “You mean the front parking or the rear parking?” / “We may be ordering a pizza halfway through this…”/ “You're gonna be hammered later…”/ “I started to mention it on the #Patreon…”/ “You can't enjoy ANYTHING anymore because EVERYTHING is stupid…”/ #CharlesBerthoud / “I recognize that name…”/ #bassvirtuoso / FADE TO BLACK #fretlessbass / “That's next level…”   (18:00): “Let's talk about the #Patreons first…”/ #PatreonShoutOut / ***JOIN US ON THE PATREON AT patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast *** / “Hail TO all…he's got a case of the Russes today…”/ ***JOIN US on #Instagram and #YouTube and #Facebook and #TikTok or EMAIL US at metalnerdery@gmail.com or VOICEMAIL US AT 980-666-8182!!!*** / #GalacticEmpire / THE IMPERIAL MARCH / “A #crombination of #KISS and #Slipknot #KISSKnot …” / “That's what this show is about…it's about learning.”/ “Haven't heard from Milla (Milley) or Geeoff…”/ “It's just on the edge of being annoying as fuck…or impossible to stand…”/ #sixyearanniversary #metalnerderypodcast / “First of all, we got an email from a girl…”/ #Leafblower #wellplayyourshittah / “Burn Cruise? Nintendo's digital-only Switch model with cartridges as download keys is normalizing the loss of game ownership, contrasting sharply with Atari's physical-only 7800 Plus releases. The 35% drop in UK physical game sales within a year signals an alarming trend where gamers risk losing access to their libraries if digital stores shut down or alter games. Atari's commitment to 30 physical-only games at $30 each for the 7800 Plus ensures a guaranteed offline gaming experience without internet dependency. Digital-only releases and cartridges as mere keys for downloads are eroding consumer rights and the concept of true game ownership. The decline of physical media in gaming is threatening game preservation and the ability to play titles decades after release without relying on active servers. The shift towards digital distribution allows publishers to control game access indefinitely, potentially increasing long-term costs for consumers who can't resell or share games. The rise and fall, and rise again(possibly) of Ames Department Stores. Old school trips to the mall to get professional photos taken. The best-selling Atari 2600 games ever.Episode 140 returns after a week off filled with fun nostalgia. It begins with the story of a Northeast staple for decades. Generations of those who grew up in that part of the United States likely have fond memories of shopping at the Ames Department Stores. However the rise of competition like Walmart and Target, along with other issues, eventually spelled the end of Ames. Now there is a possibility that the chain that once was the 4th largest in the country could be making a comeback. We'll cover all of it from the rise, to the fall, to the potential comeback. In the days before smartphones and digital cameras getting a photograph professionally taken was a chore. At times one had to venture out to an actual portrait studio. Luckily for many that grew up in decades past these types of studios could often be found in the local mall, especially Sears. We go way Back In the Day to reminisce about what it was like getting photos taken at Sears and other studios in the 1980s and beyond. For Gen-Xers, the Atari 2600 was the first memorable home video game console. It brought many arcade games, and some non-arcade titles, into people's living rooms. But which titles were the most popular? This week's Top 5 will share the best-selling Atari 2600 games ever. There will also be a new This Week In History and Time Capsule centered around the first ever 'World Championship' boxing match from the mid-19th century. For more great content become a subscriber on Patreon!Helpful Links from this EpisodeThe Lady of the Dunes.comPurchase My New Book Cape Cod Beyond the Beach! In My Footsteps: A Cape Cod Travel Guide(2nd Edition)Hooked By Kiwi - Etsy.comWear Your Wish.com - Clothing, Accessories, and moreDJ Williams MusicKeeKee's Cape Cod KitchenChristopher Setterlund.comCape Cod Living - Zazzle StoreSubscribe on YouTube!Initial Impressions 2.0 BlogRetro Games.cz - Play Old Games OnlineAmes Stores.comListen to Episode 139 here Support the show

Yes, it's an episode recorded in the afternoon of Christmas Eve and not posted until the new year...the holidays were a thing. I'm going to be hosting at Awesome Games Done Quick 2024! However, my schedule changed since the 24th, so be sure to check the GDQ website for my name to get my updated times. Insomniac Games had a lot of data leaked about their games and their employees, and there's been some interesting takes from media outlets who gleefully posted leaks of other companies that are not posting leaks from this one. Microsoft is deprecating Windows Mixed Reality support and will remove it from future versions of Windows. Consumers will no longer be able to use their WMR headsets after November 1, 2026. I got the Atari 2600+, which plays the old cartridges, and tested it out with their 10-in-1 cartridge, the 4-in-1 paddle cartridge, the newly released Mr. Run and Jump, the updated Berzerk, ET, and Halo 2600. It performed well for being an emulator that dumps cartridge ROM's and takes the original controllers! Then we talk to Rob about the end of the year.

I don't usually cover video games. When I do, you know it's for a weird reason. This episode we are looking at the Atari VCS 2600, it's strange hardware, and how it fits into the larger story of the rise of microprocessors.
