Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex talks about the latest Red Sox offseason news with Steve Buckley of The Boston Herald. Alex and Steve talk about where the Red Sox are in the scheme of the offseason, as they've spent roughly $29 million of the $32 million that Alex Speier of WEEI.com hypothesized they could comfortably spend on next year's team. If the Red Sox are to make one more significant acquisition, it seems as if they will have to trade salary. The most likely candidates to be traded are veteran members of the starting rotation. The Red Sox have a surplus of starting pitching, especially considering all of the young arms in the minor leagues that are on the cusp of the major league roster. Stephen Drew's market appears to be drying up, as the Cardinals signed Jhonny Peralta last month and the Mets have spent close to $90 million in free agency. It's never wise to bet against Scott Boras, who eventually secured a four-year deal for his client Michael Bourn last winter. But Alex and Steve both think if a three-year contract isn't out there for Drew because of the draft pick compensation that's attached to him, the Red Sox should bring him back to play shortstop on a two-year basis. The Red Sox would be a better team next season with Xander Bogaerts at third base and Drew at shortstop than they would be with Will Middlebrooks starting on the left side of the infield. Alex and Steve also talk about whether the Red Sox have been too conservative this offseason, and if the team should sign either Jon Lester or David Ortiz to a contract extension this winter. Alex, by the way, thinks they should pay Lester market rate if he asks for it. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex discusses MLB's decision to ban home plate collisions from the game next season. MLB has chosen player safety over entertainment, and fans should be in support of the decision of they care about the long-term well being of players. Roy Halladay announced his retirement last week, and is more than deserving of Hall of Fame consideration. He was one of the most dominant starting pitchers in baseball for a ten-year stretch, and it's a shame he only appeared on the postseason stage five times. Speaking of starting pitching, the posting fee debate around Japanese phenom Masahiro Tanaka has been settled. The fee has been capped at $20 million, meaning any team that bids the $20 million for Tanaka can negotiate with him. Once he signs somewhere, the market for starting pitchers will begin to take shape. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1. Alex recently celebrated his 21st birthday, so belated birthday wishes are still welcome. (Please, he doesn't have a lot of friends...) "Without a Curse" will be on hiatus next Monday, Dec. 23. The next edition of "Without a Curse" will be published on Monday, Dec. 30. Enjoy the holidays!

In this episode of "Without a Curse," Alex begins to preview the 2013 MLB season! This week, Alex and Scott Lauber of The Boston Herald take a look at the AL East. Scott tells Alex what the vibe is with the Red Sox, and if it is significantly different from the vibe at last year's Spring Training. They also talk about the biggest keys for the Red Sox to turn around their fortunes. Alex and Scott discuss the other four teams in the division, and the issues that face them: *Will the Orioles slide back to the pack after an offseason of relative inactivity? *Is the Rays' pitching staff still good enough to carry their club? *Should we be careful about how optimistic we are on the Blue Jays? *Is this the year the Yankees finally play like their old? Alex gives his own take on the latest news around Red Sox Spring Training, and why he thinks things aren't different enough in Ft. Myers. In the "Around the League" segment, the meaning behind the Indians signing Michael Bourn, and the appropriateness of Kevin Youkilis saying he will "always be a Red Sock" are talked about.
