Houston Astros pitcher Forrest Whitley joins The Matt Thomas Show after getting called up to the Majors as a part of the September roster expansion. Whitley was ranked the No. 1 prospect in the Astros farm system from 2018-21 but was unable to break out due to Tommy John surgery in 2021. When asked about quitting baseball, Whitley replied, "The thought never crossed my mind...a lot of pitchers go through injury," but "that's just a part of the game." Whitley transitioned to the bullpen this past offseason to have a better chance of contributing to the Astros, which paid off when he made his MLB debut on April 16. "The process is completely different" between preparing for a game as a starter versus a reliever. Whitley made an appearance for a single inning during Monday's 5-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. "I didn't feel nervous" because "I was prepared to get these outs." While the longtime prospect has endured a difficult journey to the Majors, Whitley maintains his confidence through every opportunity. "I thoroughly believe I can" pitch at this level. "I want to take it a day at a time."
Matt Thomas and Ross Villarreal of The Matt Thomas Show react to the Houston Texans signing backup quarterback Davis Mills to a one-year extension worth $5 million, keeping him with the team through the 2025 season. Matt and Ross also talk with Astros manager Joe Espada and pitcher Forrest Whitley as they look to even the three-game series with the Cincinnati Reds, review the comments from Southern Mississippi head coach Will Hall, who said their primary concern was "gettting that check" after a weather delay interrupted play against Kentucky, break down the University of Houston Cougars' loss to the UNLV Rebels with head football coach Willie Fritz, say "I Just Don't Get It, Ain't Nobody Got Time" and more.

Brian McTaggart, Astros beat reporter for MLB.com, joins The Matt Thomas Show after the Astros avoided the sweep by shutting out the Philadelphia Phillies 10-0 on Wednesday. Yordan Alvarez recorded a two-run homer and two solo shots for his third career three-homer game. Spencer Arrighetti struck out 11 batters and held a no-hitter through seven innings. Chas McCormick also homered Wednesday but was optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land after the game concluded. "I do think Chas will be back," perhaps closer to the playoffs, because "he's got value," McTaggart said. Space is now cleared for veteran outfielder Jason Heyward, whom the Astros are expected to add to their active roster ahead of a four-game series against the Kansas City Royals. "I suspect [Heyward will] be starting in right field tonight." The Astros hold a 3.5-game lead over the Seattle Mariners in the AL West and are projected to make the postseason. With the addition of Yusei Kikuchi and other members of the rotation stepping up, the Astros have six quality starters, raising questions about who would take the mound in a playoff series. "It's a great problem to have if your Joe Espada." Despite giving up four runs and seven hits in five innings during Tuesday's 5-0 loss, "there is no way that Justin Verlander does not start a game in the playoffs." After September 1, all MLB teams will have an expanded roster of 28 players up from the standard 26. The Astros will be able to add a pitcher and a position player. While McTaggart believes the Astros will add a third catcher, there is a toss up between Forrest Whitley and Rafael Montero, who are both pitching well in Triple-A. "My gut tells me it will be Montero."

Houston Astros manager Joe Espada joins The Matt Thomas Show following Monday's 3-2 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. The Astros dropped the opening game of the three-game road series after Bryce Harper hit a walk-off RBI single to win in the 10th inning. The Astros offense was unable to generate much production, and the defense committed a handful of errors in a matchup of division leaders. "It's that time of the year where you need to bring your A-game every single night," Espada said. "We're in a very long stretch," and "good teams take advantage of extra outs." Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez are "feeling good" as both have returned to the lineup. Jose Altuve had a day off Monday, but "it's all hands on deck." Kyle Tucker, who has been injured since June 3 when he fouled a ball off the shin, has been seen working out and shagging fly balls in an attempt to return in early September, according to general manager Dana Brown. "He wants to be on the field so bad." After September 1, all MLB teams will have an expanded roster of 28 players up from the standard 26. Rafael Montero, who was designated for assignment at the end of July, "has made some adjustments" while in Triple-A Sugar Land, and Forrest Whitley is "also someone we are considering" adding to the expanded roster.

Matt Thomas of The Matt Thomas Show recaps the Houston Astros losing the first game of a three-game series to the Atlanta Braves 6-1 Monday at Minute Maid Park. Manager Joe Espada joins to discuss Josh Hader giving up four runs on four hits and a walk in the top of the ninth, and center-fielder Jake Meyers also joins to share his optimism about the team despite a 6-12 start to the season. Matt also breaks down Rockets general manager Rafael Stone getting a contract extension, shares his displeasure with fans participating in "the wave," gives his latest "Gut Feelings" and more.
Manager Joe Espada joins The Matt Thomas Show to review the Houston Astros losing 6-1 to the Atlanta Braves on Monday at Minute Maid Park. The Astros are now 6-12 to start the season, and Espada says they "haven't been able to put everything together both offensively and defensively." Things fell apart in the first game against the Braves when Josh Hader took the mound in a non-save situation with the Braves leading 2-1. Hader allowed four runs on four hits and a walk in the top of the ninth inning. "I still want the city to be excited about the backend of our bullpen," we just have "got to be able to hit our spots," and "we'll turn things around," Espada said. Despite the loss, Spencer Arrighetti had a strong start on the mound in his home debut, getting 15 swings-and-misses out of his 87 pitches. "His presence on the mound was better" than his debut against the Kansas City Royals, and "his performance was better than what the box score showed." Espada also discusses Forrest Whitley getting called-up, Justin Verlander and Framber Valdez's return and Hunter Brown maintaining his confidence.
Astros center-fielder Jake Meyers joins The Matt Thomas Show ahead of game two of a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves. Jake Meyers was not in the lineup when the Astros lost the first game of the series 6-1 Monday at Minute Maid Park but says he is not concerned with the 6-12 start to the season. "It's a very level-headed clubhouse... it's a long season" and "we know we're really good," Meyers said. Early in the offseason, Jake Meyers was named the starting center-fielder. Meyers says he "didn't know that was coming" but knew he "needed to put in work" when returning from injury. "I tried to focus on how to maximize what I can do." Hours before Tuesday's matchup against the Braves, the Astros announced that former top pitching prospect Forrest Whitley was being promoted for his major league debut, and Meyers expressed his excitement for his former minor league teammate. My advice is "just to go out there and compete," but "the young guys have to bring donuts on day games."

With the news on Forrest Whitley, Seth and Shaun go through some of Houston's unfortunate Athlete injury history.
On today's show, Brett Chancey of Locked On Astros joins the show to discuss Houston's two spark plug rookies, OF Corey Julks and RHP Hunter Brown. Brett fills Lindsay in on Corey's "native son" background, and Lindsay enlightens Brett as to Julks' struggles with sliders and if he can adjust. They discuss Hunter Brown and the changes to his pitchmix - more sliders, less fastballs - and what that changes for his season outlook. Finally, they close with some conversation about former top prospect Forrest Whitley and if Houston fans have any faith left in the 25 year-old, oft-injured hurler. There's quite a few pitching prospects that are either new to professional baseball or are getting their first chances to really perform after injury, and all of them have different reasons why they might catch fire. There's guys that have quality breaking stuff, like Milwaukee's Robert Gasser and Baltimore's Trace Bright. There's funky lefties, like St. Louis' Cooper Hjerpe and Los Angeles Dodger Justin Wrobleski.
