Diana Winston is the Director of Mindfulness Education at UCLA's Mindful Awareness Research Center (MARC) and the author of The Little Book of Being: Practices and Guidance for Uncovering Your Natural Awareness. Called by the Los Angeles Times “one of the nation's best-known teachers of mindfulness,” she has taught mindfulness since 1999 in a variety of settings including hospitals, universities, corporations, nonprofits, and schools in the US and Asia. A sought-after speaker, she developed the evidence-based Mindful Awareness Practices (MAPS) curriculum and the Training in Mindfulness Facilitation, which trains mindfulness teachers worldwide. She is a founding board member of the International Mindfulness Teachers Association. Her work has been mentioned in the New York Times, O Magazine, Newsweek, the Los Angeles Times, Bloomberg, Women's Health, and in a variety of magazines, books, and journals. She is also the author of Wide Awake: A Buddhist Guide for Teens, the co-author, with Susan Smalley PhD, of Fully Present: The Science, Art and Practice of Mindfulness, and has published numerous articles on mindfulness. She is considered one of the early founders of meditation programs and retreats for youth.Diana is a member of the Teacher's Council at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Northern California where she was trained to teach by Jack Kornfield. In this interview, we talk about the importance of forgiveness in our lives and why carrying our anger or resentment around with us is like carrying hot coal. Dropping the hot coal can lead us to more freedom, openness, and joy. It doesn't mean we have to condone or forget, but it is truly an act of self-compassion. It's simply good for us and the practices she teaches can be really powerful. The first step, she says, is to have the willingness to even start working on forgiveness — whether it's forgiving another person for hurting you, asking another person to forgive you, or, also extremely important, forgiving yourself. None of this is easy…but it can make a big difference in our own health and ease. Letting go of these difficult feelings is a great way to begin a new year filled with more open, positive, and productive energy.

There is a whole territory of mindfulness teachings, that teach about something more expansive and spacious. Diana Winston calls this “natural awareness” and it is like classical mindfulness is like the lens of our awareness and attention very narrowly focused, whereas natural awareness is like opening that camera-lens of our awareness wide open. Diana also tells us about her experience as a nun in Burma, and how she totally crashed after a while, feeling so frustrated with her meditation practice, and how that is when she discovered the teachings and practices of natural awareness where the gist of it is that there is nothing to get, nowhere to go, there is no goal, it is all about the awareness that is already existent. The awareness that is already present inside of us, and how we can open up and get access to that natural awareness and experience a shift in our being, in how we experience ourselves ant the world around us in that moment Interestingly Diana shares, that it tended to be the westerners at the Burmese monastery that got frustrated in their meditation practice, perhaps because we are so goal-driven and have a tendency to over-effort - which is not beneficial when you are meditating. We also talk about this frase from her book: “I wanted to reach enlightenment so badly because I didn't want to be me!” Ad about how that really was rooted in a sense of unworthiness, and how inherent in the natural awareness teachings is a notion, that we inherently are filled with natural goodness. And she also talks about her practices with loving kindness and different compassion practices She also dives into what awareness actually is and from there she goes into explain the spectrum of awareness: focused awareness, investigative awareness, choiceless awareness and natural awareness She explains to us that there is no hierarchical relation between natural awareness and classical mindfulness - but that each of them is called for in different situations We speak about Our modern lives of speed and distraction - why do we want so badly to distract ourselves from ourselves? Mindfulness brings us face to face with ourselves Diana says: Meditation is like a doing in the service of being. And of course in this regard se speak about neuro plasticity. And she explains to us how awareness is capable of holding anything and healing anything. How awareness doesn't judge, awareness is infused with a compassionate holding. The willingness to sit with ourselves without exiling any part of us, but bringing compassion to the wholeness of who we are - also our traumas. How awareness can provide us with that safety. Richard has served in law enforcement for over two decades. He's held both federal and municipal level positions in a variety of investigative and operational assignments. Richard has spearheaded the introduction of mindfulness into policing as part of a larger cultural transformation toward a compassionate, skillful and resilient warrior ethos. He is a thought leader in resiliency, performance, leading change and community building in policing. Richard served in the United States Coast Guard Reserve for 27 years, both active and reserve, retiring in 2015 at the rank of Commander while assigned to Coast Guard Sector Charleston, SC. His early active-duty tours included serving as an officer aboard a high endurance cutter, and as an instructor at the Coast Guard's maritime law enforcement academy. He serves as an affiliate assistant professor in the Graduate School of Psychology at Pacific University in Oregon and serves as a co-investigator in a current NIH funded study looking at mindfulness in policing. Richard completed a year-long training program at the University of California at Los Angeles, Mindful Awareness Research Center (MARC) under the direction of Diana Winston, Dr. Susan Smalley, and Dr. Marvin Belzer. Ann Friedman, Mindfulness for Parents and Children August 2, 2017 "We are told in school to pay attention! Yet, nobody ever teaches us how to do this. Like the adults around them, children's minds wander. Their thoughts often create anxiety: What if I fail the test? What if mom is late to pick me up? Why are mom and dad arguing? Nobody likes me." Mindfulness is a training to let go of these unhelpful thoughts and to pay attention to the present moment with kindness and curiosity. This meditation led by Ann Friedman, Ph.D., included experiential exercises that children can do with their parents at home to focus on the present moment. Learning mindfulness has been shown to help children focus their attention. It can decrease stress, anxiety and depression in both children and adults and create a sense of well-being. About the presenter: Ann Friedman, Ph.D., is a Licensed Psychologist who served as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Houston Counseling Psychology Graduate Program for over ten years. Ann holds both a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Houston. She completed her Residency in Clinical Psychology at U.T. Medical School and her Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Clinical Neuropsychology at Baylor College of Medicine. Since 2007, Ann has studied mindfulness intensively with various national teachers. Over this time, she has attended annual 7-to-10 day silent retreats and worked with national teachers on a monthly basis. In 2015, she received a Certification in Mindfulness Facilitation from the Mindful Awareness Research Center (MARC) of the Semel Institute of Neuroscience and Behavioral Medicine at UCLA. She is now in a program to become an affiliate teacher with UCLA. Ann has also completed courses on teaching children and teens, including Sitting Like a Frog with Eline Snell and The Still Quiet Place by Dr. Amy Saltzman. Ann currently teaches mindfulness classes for adults, teens, and for caregivers and their children through her company, Mindful Being, P.C. at The John McGovern Houston Health and Medical Science Museum and Rothko Chapel, as well as in her private office.
