This practice encourages participants to notice sensations within the body without judgment or reaction, fostering a deep state of relaxation and awareness. Reduction in frustration often arises from our reactions to unmet expectations or uncontrollable circumstances. Body scan meditation helps by shifting focus from external situations to internal sensations. This shift encourages a more measured, mindful reaction to stressors, significantly lowering the intensity of frustration. By regularly practicing body scanning, you can learn to approach frustrating situations with a new perspective, focusing on physical sensations rather than the emotions triggered by external events. To begin practicing body scan meditation, find a quiet space where you can relax without interruptions. You can lie down, sit, or even stand if preferred. Start by focusing on the breath to settle your mind and then slowly move your attention through each part of your body. Acknowledge any sensations, thoughts, or emotions that arise, but let them pass without judgment. This week's podcast episode is a 15-Minute Body Scan Meditation. The Body Scan is a classic practice to cultivate mindfulness of the body and develop embodied awareness. For many of us, it's difficult to stay connected with the felt sense of the body. There are a lot of reasons we get pulled away from our embodied awareness - because of busy-ness, speeding through the day, getting lost in our devices, and living in a culture that values our intellectual side over our embodied knowing. Experiences of trauma can also contribute to this sense of mind-body separation, as can experiences of being othered related to attributes of our body, whether that's based on our size, race, age, sexuality, gender expression, or physical ability. By practicing Mindfulness of the Body, you can develop a habit of checking in more often, learning to listen to the signals of your body, and gradually re-embodying your full self.  Over time, this work can really shift your relationship to your body. The practice can change how you sense the body, how you talk to it, how you talk about it, how you work with its energies, and how you perceive what it even means to be in a body. Getting to know the body up close by observing its aliveness in the present moment is very different than basing your relationship on all of the accumulated messages you've received over the course of your lifetime. So, the Body Scan is a wonderful practice in service of these discoveries. As we move our attention through the body, the intention is to be receptive to sensations in a non-judgmental way. We learn to be with the full range and variety of sensations - pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral ones, intense sensations and subtle ones, familiar ones, new ones, and mysterious ones. This meditation also includes a few simple instructions to help you navigate more charged experiences, like physical pain or intense emotion. Sometimes as we do the work of reconnecting with the body, strong feelings or memories come up, so I offer some simple ways to "tap the brakes," if needed. With these options in mind, the Body Scan can be an excellent vehicle for exploring and deepening embodied presence – on your own terms. You can do this meditation seated on the ground, or in a chair, or lying down. Any position that's kind and friendly to your body is good. This meditation also pairs well with movement! You can do a body scan before you do a movement practice, as a way of really establishing connection to what you're feeling. The body of a child matching the description of a 4-year-old boy who went missing into the Yellow River Saturday night was discovered Sunday by rescue crews, Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services officials said. Officials said the body was discovered just after 10:30 Sunday morning. The rescue crews had resumed their search at 8:15 a.m. at Yellow River Park after suspending their search due to nightfall on Saturday. Fire officials said three boats were deployed into the river and worked with teams on the riverbanks to begin a grid search from the location in the river where witnesses placed the victim who was last seen downstream towards the Annistown Road bridge. Body scan meditations are meant to help you get in touch with your bodily sensations, both good and bad. It is also a great tool for calming the mind and body. Although body scan meditation practice is not about relaxing, relaxation may naturally occur as a result of this meditation. Therefore, it is important to practice non-striving. Non-striving means that we do not strive toward any particular experience during this meditation. We simply allow and experience whatever arrives in the moment.   Tips For Practicing  There are a number of variations of body scan meditations out there. How you go about this meditation and the order in which you decide to move through different parts of your body is not critical. You can choose to move through parts of your body in any order you wish.  Try to release any goals for your practice. The main objective of this practice is to practice non-judgment and simply allow your thoughts and feelings to be as they are in the moment; without trying to change them.  Try to find a time and space to practice where you will not be disturbed.  If possible, wear comfortable and loose clothing.  This meditation is recommended to be done while lying on your back but if this is not comfortable, then you can do it sitting in a chair. If you choose to lie down, you can keep your palms up towards the sky and with your legs slightly apart. Allow your feet to fall open to either side.  During this meditation, you can close your eyes or leave them open. If you choose to leave them open, try to maintain a soft and unfocused gaze.  If you tend to fall asleep while lying on your back, it might be better to sit on a chair or keep your eyes open to try to stay awake as best as you can.  Source: Mindfulness Training with YogaRenew   Intro/Outro Music: Where Are We Going by Aaron Kellim
