We know that anxiety is common and many of us have experienced some level of anxiety. But there are many myths and misunderstandings about anxiety that could be preventing a child from getting the care and treatment they need. One of the myths you might have heard is that “kids will grow out of it.” While stress and fear are normal components of childhood development, 80% of children who are experiencing problematic anxiety are not getting treatment. Dr. John Piacentini joins me today to help us understand what anxiety is, how it differs from stress, and how to help your child if they are struggling with anxiety. For children and adults alike, stress levels continue to be high as we are still dealing with the uncertainty of the pandemic. But there are things we can do to validate a child's feelings and help them through mild anxiety. And for those who are experiencing severe anxiety, Dr. Piacentini explains different types of treatment and support that can positively impact the trajectory of a child's development.   Show Notes: [2:25] - There have been and continue to be concerns about the impact of anxiety on childhood development. [3:26] - Stress is a physical reaction in response to something difficult or even exciting. [4:29] - When stress becomes chronic, it is cause for concern. [5:04] - Alternatively, anxiety is related to fear. Fear is a response to something that is threatening. [6:31] - Dr. Piacentini gives an example to show the difference and similarities between stress, anxiety, and fear. [7:58] - There are times in development when anxiety and fear are normal. [10:30] - The intensity of the anxiety and anxious behaviors is something that is looked at and is cause for concern. [12:04] - Avoiding the thing the child is fearful of can intensify the anxiety. [13:34] - Dr. Piacentini explains the difference between positive and negative reinforcement and how each kind impacts behavior. [15:43] - A parent's nature is to want to protect their child from stress, but Dr. Piacentini reminds us that their independence needs to develop. [17:05] - Missing out on social situations has a negative impact on anxiety. [18:51] - There are higher levels of mental health issues associated with the pandemic. Children with anxiety are even more sensitive. [20:10] - When schools closed, many children with anxiety and OCD felt validated, but the return to school has caused more stress, fear, and anxiety. [21:30] - Avoid having young children watch the news and catastrophizing the pandemic and provide as much structure as you can. [23:26] - Don't accommodate the anxiety. [25:15] - Dr. Piacentini describes Cognitive Behavior Therapy and discusses how effective it can be. [28:50] - About 10% of kids meet criteria for problematic anxiety. Only 2 out of 10 are getting the treatment they need. [30:01] - A common physical symptom of anxiety are frequent headaches and stomachaches. [31:48] - The mission of UCLA CARES is to increase awareness and to help identify early signs of anxiety.   About Our Guest: Dr. John Piacentini is a board-certified clinical child and adolescent psychologist and Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences in the David Geffen School of Medicine and Semel Institute for Neuroscience at UCLA.  He is also the Director of the UCLA Child OCD, Anxiety and Tic Disorders Program and the Center for Child Anxiety, Resilience, Education and Support. Dr. Piacentini's research focuses on the development of science-based treatments for child anxiety, OCD, tic, and related disorders. Through UCLA CARES, he and his team have implemented a number of school and community-based education and prevention programs to reduce the burden of child anxiety. Dr. Piacentini has authored over 300 scientific publications, including seven books, and his research has been funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and other leading foundations and philanthropic organizations. Dr. Piacentini is a frequent lecturer, and with his team has trained hundreds of mental health clinicians around the world in cognitive-behavior therapy and other evidence-based treatments and provided care to over 1000 children, adolescents, and their families.   Connect with Dr. John Piacentini: UCLA CARES Center Website Dr. Piacentini on Twitter   Links and Related Resources: Anxiety and the Family Anxiety and Depression in Adolescents How Social Anxiety Differs From Shyness and How to Help Your Child Episode 8: Mindfulness with Dr. Kathleen Carroll Wray Episode 6: Managing Family Stress and Anxiety with Dr. Stephanie Mihalas   Join our email list so that you can receive information about upcoming webinars - ChildNEXUS.com The Diverse Thinking Different Learning podcast is intended for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for medical or legal advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Most people resist change, are afraid of it, or at least feel really uncomfortable with it. But that doesn't change the fact that CHANGE IS COMING. You can count on it. It is for that very reason that I've invited Kristen Lisanti to join me today to talk about navigating change… and not just any old change, but what she calls RADIANT change. Kristen coaches leaders and their teams to drive transformation at scale, guiding them through her proven methodology to spark and sustain meaningful change. Kristen is trained and certified by the NeuroLeadership Institute, the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA's Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, the Leadership Circle and the International Coaching Federation. According to UCLA's Semel Institute for Neuroscience & Behavior:"Post-Acute-Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS) refers to a set of impairments that can persist for weeks or months after the abstaining from a substance of abuse. PAWS may also be referred to as post-withdrawal syndrome, prolonged withdrawal syndrome, or protracted withdrawal syndrome. The condition is marked by symptoms similar to those found in mood disorders and anxiety disorders, including mood swings, insomnia, and increased levels of anxiety even without any apparent stimulus"As I have mentioned in previous episodes, Recovery isn't all sunshine and rainbows. Most days I feel apathetic. Not happy, not sad but somewhere in the middle. I have come to accept this feeling. Regardless I still feel grateful. I talk about the perks I have experienced with recovery. I rant about having a bad morning right before recording this episode, my ADHD, how my addiction has manifested into other parts of my life & more. I also walkthrough how I was triggered to use yesterday due to the smell of alcohol: what went through my mind, how i glamorized it & how I talked myself out of it- something I was unable to do before working a program. Dr. Gary Small, former Director of UCLA's Longevity Center and currently Behavioral Health Physician-in-Chief at Hackensack Meridian Health, believes lifestyle choices can eclipse genetics to stymie Alzheimer's disease. Genetics influences cognitive health, Dr. Small acknowledges, but physical and mental exercise, managing stress and eating well can counteract the disease as individuals age. Even if people are at genetic risk, their behavior and length of life will determine if they get the disease, he says. Dr. Small is sanguine about the future, as studies show that lifestyle changes do lower the rate of contracting Alzheimer's. The high hurdle to cross, he concedes, is motivating people — in a pill-dependent society — to live healthier lives. Nationally renowned psychiatrist Gary W. Small, M.D., joined Hackensack Meridian Health as its Behavioral Health Physician-in-Chief on November 1, 2020. In this newly created position, Dr. Small oversees all professional and administrative activities within the behavioral health care transformation service at Hackensack Meridian Health, as well as serving as Chair of Psychiatry at Hackensack University Medical Center.  Prior to joining Hackensack Meridian Health, Dr. Small was a professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences, Parlow-Solomon professor on aging at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, director of the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience & Human Behavior and director of the UCLA Longevity Center.  Dr. Small is known nationally and internationally for his public work in promoting the practice of psychiatry and innovative research on brain health and aging. Dr. Small has authored more than 500 scientific publications as well as the international best-seller, The Memory Bible. Why is intervention, particularly early intervention, so important? The answer is brain plasticity, which is the brain's ability to change, reorganize, and even develop more efficient pathways for processing information. Research into the neurological bases of reading disorders, for example, has shown the educational and cognitive strategies can reroute brain networks and the brain can reorganize to overcome reading obstacles. Today's guest shares with us all about early intervention. Dr. Tania Abouezzeddine is a licensed Clinical Neuropsychologist and is also a faculty member at Rosemead School of Psychology at Biola University. In today's episode she explains why early intervention is key and how it results in positive changes in the brain. She not only shares why early intervention is important but how it impacts the development of the brain and the science behind it all.   Show Notes: [2:45] - It is important to understand why a child is struggling before deciding on the intervention. [3:31] - Any good intervention begins with an accurate diagnosis or assessment. [4:28] - What makes a good assessment? [5:52] - A lot of times, children are more likely to be labeled with behavior disorders. [6:55] - Tania shares research surrounding behavior disorders diagnosed to particular demographics that result in a negative trajectory. [9:09] - Tania describes some of the negative results of an inaccurate diagnosis or assessment. [10:18] - If an intervention has not begun by age 8, a child with a reading disorder will likely not bridge the gap in their reading. [11:48] - Reading disorders are hereditary. [14:03] - There is evidence that you can change the brain through good, consistent, and intense intervention. [15:19] - External interventions result in a positive change in the brain. [16:24] - The purpose of interventions is not to have a better reading score. [17:43] - Every brain is working at its own pace, but it will improve with intervention and depends on the severity of the disorder. [19:02] - There's a high percentage of children with more than one disorder. [20:17] - The child also needs to understand why an intervention is necessary. [21:59] - Tania works with high school graduates in college who have not been diagnosed and still cannot read independently. That window of time has been missed. [23:23] - Training the brain through early intervention can create new brain pathways that are similar to a child without a disorder over time. [24:46] - Sometimes parents are afraid to know and they avoid an assessment. [26:14] - Early intervention is also important because you can catch these problems before a child becomes jaded. [27:50] - The identification of strengths can help the intervention as well. [30:49] - Knowing strengths shows the child that their weaknesses don't define them. [32:19] - What happens when a child doesn't receive positive early intervention? [34:25] - We all have things we are not good at, but when it comes to reading and learning disorders they can have negative ramifications. [36:02] - Tania shares examples of students who choose majors or professions based on areas of weakness rather than their strengths. [38:41] - Students can also receive a charted plan to help with prioritizing.   About Our Guest: Dr. Abouezzeddine is a licensed Clinical Neuropsychologist (across the lifespan with a specialty in Pediatrics) and is a full-time faculty member at Rosemead School of Psychology at Biola University. She obtained her doctoral degree from the University of Southern California where she specialized in childhood trauma and resilience, which continue to be areas of research interest. The church has long been a source of shame when it comes to mental health, sometimes even using the Bible as a weapon instead of as a source of comfort. But being a Christian does not mean that we never struggle with mental health. God made us body, mind, and spirit, and it is imperative that we adjust the conversation around mental health to support this view. What are we missing? What are we doing right? How can we keep moving forward? As a professional counselor who has worked with thousands of individuals struggling with mental health, this is a topic close to my heart.  Brittney Moses is a mental health advocate and research assistant at UCLA's Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Behavior. Brittney and her work have been featured in Relevant, New York Weekly, The Chicago Journal, and The Huffington Post. She joins me for this important and encouraging episode!

Growing up can be hard. Especially the teenage years. And even more so if the teenager in question has social skill deficits. As humans we are all "hard wired" for relationships with other humans. Individuals living with autism often want to develop skills necessary to make and keep friends. They need to learn the skills necessary to navigate various social situations in which they may not feel comfortable. And they also must learn how to manage conflict and rejection. Parents and care providers may feel clueless on how to help teens develop the social skills necessary to engage with neuro-typical peers. But where there is a will.... there is a way! The Social Skills Group at BRAINS in Grand Rapids, MI recently concluded their Social Skills Group summer session based upon a program developed at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA. The Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS®) provides evidence-based social skills treatment to preschoolers, adolescents, and young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, depression, and other socio-emotional problems. PEERS® isn't a diagnostic tool. It is a tool kit designed to help individuals develop social skills through didactic lessons and role play demonstrations as well as providing participants opportunities to practice these skills through socialization activities. And IT WORKS! I hope you enjoy today's presentation! The development of social skills has the power to change and enhance the life experience of everyone who seeks to belong, to be seen, and to engage with the world around them.

Join us for a conversation with Tehseen Noorani and Erica Fletcher where we discuss the origins and highlights of the Psychedelics, Madness, and Awakening Conference, as well as each interviewee’s personal research and links to these subjects. Topics we cover include: Why madness is excluded from psychedelic therapy and left outside the emerging conversation, and how to involve mad folks in these conversations Community harm reduction responses to spiritual awakening, and harm reduction with psychedelics The consequences of psychedelic exclusion criteria How themes of overground and underground experimentation and healing show up in each participant’s research And more! About Tehseen Noorani and Erica Hua Fletcher: Tehseen is an independent researcher in the final stages of a five-year postdoctoral project documenting how 'psychedelic' and ‘psychotic’ experiences, practices and histories are connected.  This has involved an ethnography of the overground and underground experimentation happening with, (1) psychedelics, including leading qualitative research with the psychedelics research team at Johns Hopkins University, and (2) madness, including as a long-standing ally of the Hearing Voices Network, and more recent membership of the Hearing The Voice project. His book - planned for publication in 2021 - puts these twinned sites into conversation, locating their joint possibilities within the raced and gendered politics of contemporary drug-taking and spirit-making.   Erica is a postdoctoral fellow at UCLA's Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior and the co-chair of the Society for Medical Anthropology's Mental Health Interest Group. Over the last decade, she has worked closely with community members, peer support specialists, and community health workers on collaborative alternatives to traditional psychiatric treatment. Erica writes about contemporary mental health social movements, community health and healing, and carework; her scholarship spans the health humanities, social medicine, and mad studies.  About the Conference: Psychedelics, Madness, & Awakening: Harm Reduction & Future Visions To watch recorded presentations and panel discussions with the Psychedelics, Madness, and Awakening’s conference, check out the PMA website: http://www.psychedelicsmadnessawakening.com Find Tehseen online: On Twitter @tehseennoorani To download Tehseen’s articles: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Tehseen-Noorani-2 Find Erica online: On the web: https://ericahua.weebly.com On Instagram @erica.hua To download Erica’s articles: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Erica_Fletcher3 Links to relevant resources: Anthropology & Mental Health Interest Group: http://amhig.medanthro.net  Alternatives Conference: https://www.alternatives-conference.org  Hearing Voices conference: http://hearingvoicesnetworkireland.ie/intervoice-congress-2021/  Links to So Many Wings’ social media and website On the web: https://somanywings.org On Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/somanywingspodcast On Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/somanywingspodcast On Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/somanywingspodcast

Dr. Geschwind has trained over 70 graduate students and post-doctoral research fellows, and is among the highest cited scientists in neurology, neuroscience and genetics (H index > 140). In addition to serving on several scientific advisory boards, including the Faculty of 1000 Medicine, the Scientific Advisory Board for the Allen Institute for Brain Science, the NIMH Advisory Council and the NIH Council of Councils, he currently serves on the editorial boards of the journals Cell, Neuron and Science. He has received several awards for his laboratory's work is an elected Member of the American Association of Physicians and the National Academy of Medicine.   What can big data and genomics offer the individual regarding medical treatment? Listen and learn What makes up our genome, how to understand the terms for each part, like exon, intron, and exome, and what parts are effected epigenetically; Why genomics testing still focuses on that 2 to 3 percent of the genome called the exome that codes for proteins; and How sequencing will broaden and change, making preventative care that much more effective for certain patients and more. Dr. Daniel Geschwind is the Gordon and Virginia MacDonald Distinguished Professor in Neurology, Psychiatry, and Human Genetics; the Senior Associate Dean and Associate Vice Chancellor for Precision Health at UCLA; and the director of the Center for Autism Research and Treatment at the Semel Institute at UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. He opens up the world of genomics for listeners, explaining why an exome sequencing test is the center of precision medicine currently. He explains how the exome is composed of the 3% of your genome that actually codes for protein sequences. What's the rest of the genome up to? Well, scientists believe that remainder of your genome is busy regulating those sequences, determining levels and turning gene expressions on and off.  He explains how scientists use the exome sequencing process. In fact, the majority of people who say they've been sequenced mean, in fact, that their exome has been sequenced. Whole genome sequencing costs about three times as much but offers scientists the same information at this point. However, he thinks this will soon change. As the exome sequencing project continues and our knowledge accumulates, the benefits will increase from whole genome sequencing. The costs are likely to drop as well.  Once it gets inexpensive enough and we have sequenced hundreds of millions of patients with a variety of disorders, we will have much better predictive power.  For more information, he suggests UCLA's Precision Health website. Hey, it's Jon Cook with Keynote Content. Thanks so much for joining me. We are in the last of the four-part series we've been doing, talking about neuroscience, talking about specifically the four main chemicals inside your brain, inside your audience's brain that you want to be able to activate, and then connect on that activation with your products and services to better serve your audience. And again, as we go into all of this content and we talk about neuroscience, there's this amazing power that exists in the human brain. I believe it's one of the greatest forces in the world. But the key part is that with great power comes great responsibility. So, as I share all this information for you, it's with this belief, with this hope that you use this information with integrity, that you actually use it to serve your audience, not manipulate. So, we've gone through these first four, but again, one of the ways I love to remember these four chemicals, is what I call DOSE: D for dopamine, O for oxytocin, S for serotonin, and E for endorphins. We're going to talk about endorphins today. But before we get into this you might say, "Okay, Jon, who are you? What's your credibility?" I spent the last four years studying a little over 11,000 hours worth of time invested into studying neuroscience: how the brain is wired for impact, for influence, for messaging, sales copy, social media, how a speaker from the stage can share a story and know it's going to connect with a specific part of your audience's brain. Now take that information, I've brought it into working with clients. I've worked with over 1100 different business coaches and consultants, and more than 800 different speakers since 2017. That's my credibility. And today, endorphins is the one that I think might be the most misunderstood of all the four brain chemicals. This is the one that's most misunderstood. In fact, you might even see the idea of endorphins, you might think adrenaline junkies, people jumping out of perfectly good airplanes, or swimming with sharks, or dirt bike racing down a mountainside, or something crazy, just getting your adrenaline going. That's what I thought for as well. But then about three or four years ago I connected with Dr. Reef Karim. He's from the Semel Institute of Neuroscience with UCLA. And I asked him, and it was supposed to be about a 10, 15 minute conversation. We sat and talked for about two hours about neuroscience, about how the brain is wired for imaging, for impact, for messaging, for even different words, phrases, the way that our brains are wired. And he said, endorphins, he said, "Jon, what I wish people understood about endorphins is that endorphins is not about me. It's not even about you. It's about other people and what we can do on their behalf, risking our status quo." And I thought it was interesting and so we talked about a little bit more. I said, "What do you mean about the status quo?" And as we went through the conversation it occurred to me... (Transcript continues) ------------ Being an expert doesn't mean you automatically have an audience, especially with so much noise in the digital marketing space. You need to break through the noise and establish your message as a rising thought leader in your industry. Jon Cook has worked with over 1,100 coaches and consultants and 800 speakers to make their messages remarkably clear and compelling to the right audience, and today he wants to help you. Through her time as a commercial banker, consultant and mentor to budding entrepreneurs, she helped clients create solid business and financial strategies to help propel their business to success. While working with aspiring female entrepreneurs, Janice noticed that the same four themes kept repeating: Many women are uncomfortable with finance, both in their business and in their personal life. Women want access to more women mentors and advisors. Women often start businesses because they feel the corporate world doesn't fit their lifestyle. Few are motivated by purely financial reasons. Dear Family,

Dear Family,

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 15, 2019 15:34

Dear Family and Friends, This is Rachel Steinman and in less than three months we will be in a new decade- The Roaring 20’s. So let’s seize the day and make bold resolutions. One of my resolutions is to connect with you. It’s why I’ll be podcasting weekly. And it’s why I want to invite you to PLESE JOIN MY PRIVATE FACEBOOK GROUP- “Dear Family Members.” (Link in bottom of show notes.) I’ve been saying a lot lately how I could literally walk up to anyone on the street or knock on any front door and whomever I ended up speaking with would have some type of family issue or a family secret they were ashamed of. I'm working hard to create mental health and get the message out by: *Attending WerkIt, a Podcasting Bootcamp put on by the Annenberg Foundation. It was free of charge and meant to encourage a diverse population of women. A brave woman got up to speak about the difficulty of recording in the "hood " (her words) with helicopters, sirens, and dogs barking all around her. I realized her voice needed to be heard, and podcasting is such an incredible platform to get it out there.  We also discussed mixing boards, advertising, production and so much more. I realized how much I have learned since beginning this podcasting journey.  *Sharing my experiences of feeling vulnerable and brave at the same time when I went into a middle school in Burbank and spoke to kids and their parents about the NAMI Ending the Silence Program. You know when something just feels right? Well, this felt right. I felt like I had a lot to offer because I’m a teacher who has taught kindergarten through sixth grade, a mother of two thriving teenagers whom I will take some credit for, and I’ve become a mental health advocate, researching the latest news in addition to owning my personal family stories. Being able to answer the kids' and their parents' questions with knowledge and knowing I might change the trajectory of a young person’s life felt really great. *Attending UCLA’s Friends of Semel’s Open Mind screening of BEDLAM, the first documentary to explore the crisis in the care of people with severe mental illness in this country. It premiered at Sundance in 2019 to a standing ovation. The documentarian was made by Dr. Paul Rosenberg, a psychiatrist, and filmmaker who went into psych wards, prisons and into the tent cities of the homeless on the streets of Los Angeles. California is the epicenter of the homeless crisis and prisons are being used to house many people who used to be held in psych wards, or as they used to be called Insane Asylums. Learning about the history and politics of tearing down mental hospitals to be replaced by prisons was fascinating and sad. Dr. Rosenberg was joined by a panel of psychiatry royalty for an incredible discussion. What made the doctor’s story so powerful was it was personal. His family hid the shame and stigma of his sister’s schizophrenia. I walked away feeling like my goal of discussing mental health in families was even more important. We as a society have to shine a light on our bias’ against mental illness. By educating our young about mental health, we can prevent self-medication and substance abuse, and keep our youth off the streets. It really matters because 50-75% of youth in the juvenile justice system experience a mental health condition. I  feel hopeful because we are beginning to shift the paradigm as our youth begin to see their mental health as a priority and schools are beginning to see the value in teaching mindfulness starting at a young age. The good news is we CAN break the generational trauma and curses. So when someone says, “It runs in the family,” you say, “This is where it runs out.” Sincerely, Rachel        SHOW NOTE LINKS:   PLEASE JOIN: ***Dear Family Members, Private Facebook Group- CLICK THE "VISIT GROUP" BUTTON    *Rachel's YouTube Video of this Conversation- Please Subscribe   *WerkIt Podcast Festival   *Second Home Work Space in Hollywood   *NAMI's Ending the Silence Program   *Sundance Documentary- Bedlam   *Bedlam- the Book   *The Friends of the Semel Institute of Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA   *Rachel's Essay- Homelessness is More Than Lesshomeness   Correction on stats- *As of January 2018, California had an estimated 129,972 experiencing homelessness on any given day, as reported by Continuums of Care to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). *According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development's Annual Homeless Assessment Report, as of 2018 there were around 553,000 homeless people in the United States on a given night or 0.17% of the population.   CONNECT WITH US! *Dear Family, the Podcast Page *Write Now Rachel Website *Rachel's Blog Page- @Medium *Rachel Steinman's Twitter *Dear Family, and Write Now Rachel's Facebook Page *Dear Family, and Write Now Rachel's Instagram Page   PLEASE JOIN: ***Dear Family Members, the Private Facebook Group   WAYS TO HELP THE PODCAST: *Leave a 5-Star Review.  *Share with your Dear Friends and Family,. ***Listen and Subscribe via iTunes!!!  ***Listen and Subscribe via Stitcher!!! ***Listen and Subscribe via Spotify!!!   Thank you! Ann Friedman, Mindfulness for Parents and Children August 2, 2017 "We are told in school to pay attention! Yet, nobody ever teaches us how to do this. Like the adults around them, children's minds wander. Their thoughts often create anxiety: What if I fail the test? What if mom is late to pick me up? Why are mom and dad arguing? Nobody likes me." Mindfulness is a training to let go of these unhelpful thoughts and to pay attention to the present moment with kindness and curiosity. This meditation led by Ann Friedman, Ph.D., included experiential exercises that children can do with their parents at home to focus on the present moment. Learning mindfulness has been shown to help children focus their attention. It can decrease stress, anxiety and depression in both children and adults and create a sense of well-being. About the presenter: Ann Friedman, Ph.D., is a Licensed Psychologist who served as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Houston Counseling Psychology Graduate Program for over ten years. Ann holds both a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Houston. She completed her Residency in Clinical Psychology at U.T. Medical School and her Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Clinical Neuropsychology at Baylor College of Medicine. Since 2007, Ann has studied mindfulness intensively with various national teachers. Over this time, she has attended annual 7-to-10 day silent retreats and worked with national teachers on a monthly basis. In 2015, she received a Certification in Mindfulness Facilitation from the Mindful Awareness Research Center (MARC) of the Semel Institute of Neuroscience and Behavioral Medicine at UCLA. She is now in a program to become an affiliate teacher with UCLA. Ann has also completed courses on teaching children and teens, including Sitting Like a Frog with Eline Snell and The Still Quiet Place by Dr. Amy Saltzman. Ann currently teaches mindfulness classes for adults, teens, and for caregivers and their children through her company, Mindful Being, P.C. at The John McGovern Houston Health and Medical Science Museum and Rothko Chapel, as well as in her private office. Ann is available to teach mindfulness to social and civic groups, schools, businesses, and healthcare organizations. She can be reached at ann@mindfulbeinghouston.com or by calling (713) 443-6273. For further information, please see her website at mindfulbeinghouston.com. Since September 2005, on the first Wednesday of each month from 12-1pm, the Rothko Chapel hosts a meditation or contemplative practice focusing on a different spiritual or faith tradition featuring teachers and religious leaders from throughout the greater Houston community. This series provides opportunities for visitors to learn more about a specific spiritual or faith tradition, and experience a related meditation or contemplative practice, such as prayer, chanting, and more.
