Mirror Mirror: The Craft of Narcissistic Mirroring

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 6, 2024 25:37

This episode unpacks a concept called mirroring. This has been studied by psychologists for years and can be used to create connection between people. BUT...when narcissists implement this craft, it's dangerous and incredibly manipulative. Narcissists lack a true identity, so they study you: your mannerisms, what you like to eat, your likes and dislikes, where you like to go, your interests, your hobbies, your dreams, ambitions. This is so they can create a desirable image for their target. They tend to do this in the idealization phase when they are love bombing you, showering you with attention. This is to create a false sense of intimacy and closeness with their targets. Maybe it's even making you feel like they're your "soul mate." If it feels too good to be true...it might be. None of the narcissist's behavior is authentic and why it's so dangerous. They are looking to gain control of the target and fuel their ego. It can create a toxic cycle in the relationship if it goes on long enough and creates confusion for the target when the narcissist begins the devaluation phase. Mirroring tends to happen most in the idealization phase and this is part of the narcissistic mask. They will string you along with this vision until they have you hooked and for as long as they can until the mask starts to slip. Healthy relationships tend to have some things in common and some differences. Listen through to the end to hear how you can increase your NarcDAR™️: How to Recognize, Respond & Repel narcissists. This will help you become more aware and how to best navigate if you believe you might be dealing with a narcissist or if you have or are experiencing mirroring. This episode unpacks the book Psychopath Free by Jackson MacKenzie. You can grab a copy HERE. This seemed like the perfect content as follow up to World Narcissistic Abuse Awareness Day on June 1st. Ginny shares some of the key components from this book, including the red flags of being in a relationship with a psychopath, narcissist or sociopath. The author includes a comprehensive list of 30 in the book! Some other key highlights are pulling out some terminology that's used by the author that we haven't covered here before, such as having a constant, cognitive dissonance, word salad, flying monkeys and the crazy ex! What's great about this book is that it focuses a lot on becoming whole again through trauma recovery and healing after encountering these dangerous personalities. While it may be tempting to reach out to the new supply, think about putting yourself in the idealization phase and thinking you've met the love of our life, would you be receptive to believing it? Keep in mind, there's no timeline for grief or recovering from this type of abuse. The author also highlights the 30 signs of strength. A few of these are having compassion, taking accountability, apologizing, and being forgiving. Part of the healing process includes cognitive defusion. This means acknowledging your emotions and not dismissing the difficulties in life. This allows you to choose to move towards living more consistently in joy, peace and enlightenment. You can't change the people around you, but you can change the people around you. Read that again! It's important to keep in mind that you can't change people's behaviors or actions. You can only change your own. But you can change the people in your community. You're only as good as the company you keep. Narcissists will often discard people that they can't control or are no longer giving them the supply they want. The motivation behind this is different than a healthy person -- it's usually to find peace or to protect yourself when making a decision to no longer engage with someone that is bringing toxicity to your life. If you are working to remove narcissists or other dangerous personalities from your life, you may want to consider utilizing the grey rock method. Tune into Season 1, Episode 18 for more on this. When you change, grow and evolve, sometimes the people around you are uncomfortable with your growth as it highlights that they may not be growing. They may be used to an older version of you and might not like this. When you remove negative and toxic energy from your life, it creates space to invest in the healthy and meaningful relationships in your life to flourish. These relationships become deeper and you also naturally welcome into your life more warm, loving & authentic people into your community as well. You can always come back to paying attention to your emotional bank account and notice how interactions leave you feeling.
