For the second time in as many weeks, the president of the Platform for Progress, Mirsad Hadžikadić, appeared on national TV in Bosnia and Herzegovina. And once again he was asked to address the current state of affairs in the country and his stance on some of the political strife that continues.
The president of the Platform for Progress, Mirsad Hadžikadić, continues his push, through recorded video messages, to address the ongoing strife in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This marks his first real public efforts since the general election on November of 2022, which was followed by the restricting of the Platform. During our recent conversation Hadžikadić expressed confidence that his message is with some who are very concerned about the current state of affairs.
For the first time since the general elections in November of 2022, the president of the Platform for Progress, Mirsad Hadžikadić, was interviewed on national TV in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the end, he came to the decision that he would remain a candidate and continue to push forth the agenda of the Platform for Progress. Time is running short for Mirsad Hadžkadić to make his final decision on whether to continue to run for president in Bosnia and Herzegovina or withdraw his candidacy. His hand was forced recently upon the announcement of the formation of another opposition coalition that would also have a presidential candidate on the ballot in its attempt to unseat the ruling nationalists. We had a very heartfelt discussion about the agonizing decision he has been forced to make. One that he continues to say will be based solely on what is best for the country.

For the Platform for Progress president, Mirsad Hadžikadić, it has been a long and grueling two weeks. He and the Platform vice president, have been traveling around Bosnia and Herzegovina, meeting with citizens, and collecting the signatures needed for his hame to appear on the October ballot as the presidential candidate for The Country coalition. During this time he also learned of the news that three major opposition parties have announced plans to back a single candidate to run for the Bosniak presidential council seat as well. News that has Hadžikadić contemplating his future plans.
On Thursday, December 9th, Mirsad Hadžikadić announced that he will once again seek the Bosniak presidential council seat in the 2022 general elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Only this time it will not be as an independent candidate. During today's press conference, he also announced the formation of a coalition party, “The Country”, which will bring together other parties from around the country in a unified effort to unseat the current nationalist leadership. Mirsad Solakovic grew up in a Bosnian Muslim family during the 1980s, in a country where people from a range of different ethnic groups and religions lived side by side. This harmony was shattered for Mirsad at the age of 13, when his Serbian teacher turned up at school one day in military uniform and pointed a gun at him. As war descended on his town, he and his family were rounded up and Mirsad was singled out and tortured by that very same teacher. They were then sent to a concentration camp on the school grounds as part of a wave of ethnic cleansing. They escaped to England as refugees, but Mirsad was by now experiencing severe PTSD – Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He found it hard to adjust, suffered bullying and wouldn't speak, until two of his new teachers asked if he would talk about his life in the school assembly. It would be a life-changing moment for Mirsad. He's written a book about his experiences called The Boy Who Said Nothing. Mirsad Solakovic survived a war in which 100,000 people died in the heart of Europe in the 1990s. Mirsad was just 13 years old when the Bosnian war devastated his life. Like the entire country, Mirsad's life was torn apart with his village, neighbours, family and friends divided and forced to fight. Put into concentration camps, beaten, tortured and starved, this is an incredible story of survival and escape. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
William Schmidt of Germany officially stepped into his new role as the High Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina on August 1st. He replaces Valentin Inzko, who had held the position for the last 12 years. The High Representative is pointed by the European Union and is tasked with overseeing the 1995 Dayton Peace agreement, which brought the Bosnian war to an end. The president of the Platform for Progress, Mirsad Hadžikadič, had an opportunity to speak with both Schmidt and Inzko on Monday during an informal reception to introduce Schmidt. Mirsad indicated that he hopes to have more private and formal discussions with Schmidt in the future, to explain in more detail the vision of the Platform. Mirsad said he is encouraged though, by the fact that Schmidt has openly discussed the need for electronic voting in the country, an issue that Mirsad and the Platform have been pressing for the last three years. Mirsad, also spoke to me about an opportunity he had to revisit some of his family roots.
For the third time, the president of the Platform for Progress, Mirsad Hadžikadić, along with his wife Mirzeta, walked the mountainous road between Nezuk and Srebrenica. It was along that road in July of 1995, that over 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys were massacred by Serbian troops during the Bosnian War. For 17 years, thousands have gathered each year from around the world to walk the “road of death”, and to pay tribute to those who lost their lives. I recently spoke with Mirsad as he spoke of the long and grueling walk of nearly 62 miles and the stories of those who once again have touched his heart and soul.
Though internal issues continue to dominate much of the time of Platform for Progress president, Mirsad Hadžikadić, looking ahead to the 2022 general elections must still be addressed. During our recent conversation, Mirsad spoke of efforts to assemble a think tank of business leaders and key influencers, who will be tasked with identifying key issues that must be addressed for the betterment of the country as a whole. He says he can't claim to be the first with this idea but certainly believes the Platform is the most committed, of any, in an attempt to awaken the general public of the urgent need for change.

Platform for Progress president, Mirsad Hadžikadić, has in his words, experienced the most difficult week of his political career. What was thought to be a smooth transition to the appointment of the new mayor in Sarajevo was anything but. Once again politics as usual reared its ugly head and undermined the process of this historic occasion and cast a bad light on the Platform. Mirsad and I spoke about the challenges of the week and what this all means moving forward.
As the planning for the 2022 general electiosn have begun some difficult decisions lie ahead for the Platform for Progress. Should the Platform go it alone again as it did in 2018, join an existing coalition of parties, or start its own coalition? And of course the big question of whether Mirsad Hadžikadić, the president of the Platform, will again run for the presidency. Mirsad and I spoke about the critical decisions that lie ahead, the timeline for making those decisions, and the pros and cons that each pose.

The Platform for Progress continues to struggle with internal strife that has been plaguing the organization since the local elections back in November. The president of the Platform, Mirsad Hadžikadić, says it has become very apparent that outsiders have infiltrated the ranks of the organization resulting in infighting, changing allegiances, defaming posts about himself and questions about who to trust these days. Mirsad and I spoke about these troubling times and what can be done as it tries to prepare for its annual convention coming up later in the month.

Hopes were running high for the Platform for Progress following the local elections in November as there were clear signs that the Platform was indeed becoming a political force, a power broker, in Bosnian politics. However, events of recent have cast a bit of a shadow on the new enthusiasm as the strategizing for the 2022 general elections had already begun. There were already plans underway to restructure some of the personnel within the Platform, which in itself was causing some personnel issues. However, one of the top members of the presidential governing board handed in his resignation as well as some other members of the Platform. There has been a defection by at least one Platform member who was elected to a city council seat. And with all of this the mudslinging against Mirsad and the Platform has begun in earnest both internally and externally. I recently spoke with Mirsad about these troubling and challenging times and what lies ahead.
With the local elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina now over the Platform for Progress has begun in earnest its planning and strategizing for the 2022 general elections. For Mirsad Hadzikadić, president of the Platform for Progress, and the members of his team they now have the luxury of having been through one general election and the local elections. They can look at what did and did not work as they plan for the future. Over the last 2 1/2 years the Platform has established itself as a political force, and with that the growing pains that come with it. Mirsad and I spoke about the most recent meeting of the presidential governing board as it looks forward to the 2022 presidential election and what needs to be done.
Mirsad Selimbegović was born and raised in Yugoslavia. He has decided now is the time to share his emotional story of being held captive for many months in military and concentration camps during the war and genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992-1995. His hope by coming forward is that perhaps it will serve as a reminder of mans inhumanity to man, and will prevent such genocides and atrocities from happening in the future. Sharing his story, as you will hear, also provides a time for personal healing some 29 years later.

Much still has to be done as the local elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina are just over one month away. However, Mirsad Hadzikadic the president of the Platform for Progress, and his team are already looking ahead and beginning preparations for the presidential election in 2022. Mirsad and I spoke about many of the ongoing issues facing the Platform with the local elections just over a month away and the fact they are already looking ahead to 2022.
As was the case in the presidential election in 2018, the Platform for Progress will have representatives on many of the election boards that are being assembled to oversee the voting process at the voting precincts across the country on election day. However, the inherent corruption that exists as part of that process is rearing its ugly head once again. When Mirsad Hadzikadić, the president of the Platform, and I spoke here in Charlotte, North Carolina, he discussed how his team is navigating its way through the process as the local elections are now scheduled for November 15. He also took the time to discuss how the political climate both in Montenegro and Belarus is having a direct influence on Bosnia and Herzegovina Nadgledanje glasanja tokom predstojećih lokalnih izbora u Bosni i Hercegovini Kao što je bio slučaj i na predsjedničkim izborima 2018. godine, Platforma za progres imat će predstavnike u mnogim biračkim odborima koji se formiraju kako bi nadgledali proces glasanja na biračkim mjestima u cijeloj zemlji na dan izbora. 24.09.2020. On Saturday, August 29th, Zenica was the site of the seventh peaceful protest march coordinated by the Platform for Progress. Zenica, the fourth largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina his located some 60 miles north of Sarajevo. During my recent conversation with Mirsad Hadzikadić, president of the Platform, we talked about the success of the march, particularly in light of all of the regulations that are in place due to COVID-19. He also took a moment to reflect on how this event as well as others of recent are true indicators of the growth of the Platform in just two short years. After numerous delays and rumblings that the local elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina could actually be canceled, a new date of November 15, 2020, has been set. During my recent conversation with Mirsad Hadzikadic, we discussed the significance of this new development amidst all of the recent controversies. He also shared that after a twelve-year absence local elections will be held in Mostar, the fifth largest city, on December 20. The Platform for Progress has been adamant in its demands that the elections once again be held and organized several peaceful protest walks over the last several weeks to voice those concerns. 31.07.2020. With the October 4 local elections now a go, the Platform for Progress is totally focused on the tasks at hand, making sure to address all of the key logistical issues moving forward. These include making sure that all required signatures from registered voters from towns and municipals across the country are acquired so that Platform candidates can appear on the ballot, finalizing the lists of those candidates, to campaign messaging. However when Mirsad and I spoke he said despite all of their efforts they must still navigate the numerous stumbling blocks along the way. 14.05.2020. Due to the coronavirus outbreak in Bosnia and Herzegovina there has been some speculation as to whether the local election scheduled for October 4 would go on as scheduled, postponed or possibly not held at all. This week the Central Electoral Commission announced the elections will now be held as scheduled. I spoke with Mirsad about the announcement and the strategies now moving forward for the Platform. We also spoke about the latest regarding the coronavirus.
Business, as usual, has taken on new meaning for the Platform for Progress as Mirsad Hadzikadic and his team continue to navigate the uncharted waters of the coronavirus. Mirsad and I recently spoke about the latest on the coronavirus outbreak in Bosnia and Herzegovina and its ongoing impact on the Platform in its day to day activities. 03.04.2020. As the coronavirus continues to make its presence felt around the globe, there are now seven confirmed cases in Bosnia and Herzegovina. And as a result of the wrath it has reigned, particularly in Italy and other neighboring countries in Europe, the country has barred entry to travelers from those countries most affected by the coronavirus outbreak and banned public gatherings of more than 300 people indefinitely. As a result travel has been limited at best for Mirsad Hadzikadic and the Platform for Progress as they continue organizing around the country in preparation for the local elections in October of 2020. When Mirsad and I recently spoke he said planned trips to Austria had to be cancelled in addition to several appearances in Bosnia and Herzegovina. But despite these setbacks he says he was able to present a major Platform proposal in the city of Mostar that could restore local elections there for the first time in twelve years. 13.03.2020. Mostar is the sixth largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina and is a focal point for the Platform for Progress because of its rich cultural diversity, which includes large populations of Bosniak and Croat citizens. The Platform will announce a plan on March 6 that will hopefully restore local elections that have been void there for over 8 years, with the hope that it will serve as a model across the country for other cities, towns and municipalities. This as the Platform continues its message of inclusivity for all as it seeks to show the path to democracy. Mirsad and I spoke about the intricacies of dealing with human behavior in order for the process to succeed, as well as a recent trip Geneva Switzerland for an address at the University of Geneva. 02.03.2020. This week on Heavy Hands, we're figuring Dominick Reyes' chances against the light heavyweight GOAT, and saying a prayer so that Katlyn Chookagian's soul might find peace in the afterlife. Is Dominick Reyes as good as the light heavyweight champion, Thiago Santos? The question is not whether Katlyn Chookagian loses, but whether she looks more like Holm or Carmouche in the effort Is Dan Ige scrappy enough to take Mirsad Bektic out of his comfort zone? Derrick Lewis betrayed us by becoming Actually Good, but he's still probably gonna win

With growth comes more responsibilities for the the Platform for Progress Movement. There is the need now to address key policy issues which face the organization and the country as well. Some of these issues include whether the Platform should consider alignment with the other political organizations within Bosnia and Herzegovina and what if anything can be done to address the growing problem of the migrant population. Mirsad and I had a chance to speak about the decisions facing the Platform and how they are being addressed during his recent stay in Charlotte, NC. 20.12.2019. Mirsad Hadzikadic recently traveled to Germany to conduct town hall meetings in the cities of Hamburg, Frankfort and Dusseldorf. This is all part of the concerted effort by the Platform to formally organize there and in other countries, engage the diaspora, and urge them to become more involved with the politics in Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as the countries in which they reside. I spoke with Mirsad about his recent trip, the importance of engaging the diaspora on a global level and their critical role in establishing democracy in their homeland. He also shared some lighter moments regarding his travel by train throughout Germany. 13.12.2019. Mirsad Hadzikadic and other members of the Platform for Progress Movement traveled once again to Banja Luka in the Republic of Srpska, the site of the second assembly of the Platform later this month, for logistical meetings. They then traveled to Bihac in northwest Bosnia and Herzegovina to oversee the election of regional delegates who will attend the assembly and a town hall meeting. When I spoke with Mirsad we talked once again about the upcoming assembly and his recent meeting in Sarajevo with the ambassador from Austria. 08.11.2019. Mirsad Hadzikadic recently traveled to Sweden and Denmark as the Platform for Progress is formally being organized in those two neighboring countries. In Sweden, where the Platform for Progress has been officially organized, he participated in the presentation of the organizing committee and the governing board. It was then off the Denmark, for a town hall meeting where the Platform is still in the process of being formally organized. When we spoke Mirsad continued to emphasize the importance the diaspora and the critical role they will play in the future of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

This week marked the official organization of the Platform for Progress Movement in Mostar, the sixth largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Getting to this point for Mirsad Hadzikadic and the Movement was not without its challenges due to the inherent complexities and general makeup within the city. But despite various roadblocks along the way, Mirsad told me it was a wonderful event which marked first gathering of the founding assembly in the city.
Typically the assembly of the Platform for Progress Movement would meet every four years. However, during a recent meeting of the Platform for Progress Movement governing board, members decided to hold another assembly this year as well, just one year after the founding assembly announced the formal of organization of the Movement. Sarajevo would typically be the location of such a gathering, however this year the board decided to have the assembly meet in Banja Luka, which is located in the Republic of Srpska. I spoke with Mirsad about this very interesting decision as well as his planned trips to Sweden and Denmark as the formal organization of the Movement in those countries is almost complete Planiranje druge skupštine Platforme za progres U pravilu bi se skupština pokreta Platforma za progres održavala svake četvrte godine. 27.09.2019. For Mirsad Hadzikadic and the Platform for Progress Movement travel around the country remains at the forefront of its efforts as the Movement continues to formally organize throughout municipalities, towns and cities. Mirsad makes a point each week to meet with as many citizens as he can. This includes speaking at town hall meetings, meeting business owners, engaging with teachers at local schools, and yes even attending another soccer game as he strives to understand and address all of their concerns. We spoke about his recent travels and his takeaways from numerous meetings as preparations are now in full swing for the local elections in October of 2020 Osluškivanje glasova Bosne i Hercegovine Za Mirsada Hadžikadića i pokret Platforma za progres obilazak zemlje je u prvom planu dok traje formalno organizovanje pokreta u općinama i gradovima. 13.9.2019. With the local elections just over a year away the travel for Mirsad and the Platform for Progress Movement has intensified. This, as Movement continues to formally organize in key cities, towns and municipalities across Bosnia and Herzegovina. Mirsad and I recently spoke about these trips and his takeaways from these visits, including a meeting of the governing board of the Platform for Progress Movement in Sarajevo. The Platform for Progress Movement continues to become more organized throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina in preparation for the local elections in 2020, which means almost daily travel by Mirsad Hadzikadic and his team. This entails attending newly formed assemblies of the Movement, town hall type appearances, and meetings with local government officials. I recently spoke with Mirsad as he took time to reflect upon some of these visits and the fact that it is becoming even more evident now that the message of the Movement is being heard and embraced throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina Još znakova koji pokazuju da ljudi širom Bosne i Hercegovine prihvataju poruku promjene Pokret Platforma za progres nastavlja se organizovati širom Bosne i Hercegovine i pripremati za lokalne izbore 2020. godine, što znači da su Mirsad Hadžikadić i njegov tim gotovo svaki dan na putu. 30.08.2019. For the Platform for Progress Movement these are indeed challenging times in Bosnia and Herzegovina. There is more unrest within the current political environment regarding NATO and the European Union and the current path the country now seems to be on. Neighboring countries are also going through their share of political unrest as well. All issues that do not go unnoticed and are being addressed by Mirsad Hadzikadic and the Movement in their ongoing effort to bring democratic change to Bosnia and Herzegovina. When I recently spoke with Mirsad about this he had just met with the Platform for Progress Movement’s founding assembly. 23.08.2019. The ruling presidential council in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is made up of a Bosniak, Serb and Croat representative, recently came to an agreement indicating the country will not seek membership in NATO or the Europen Union. Membership that Mirsad Hadzikadic and the Platform for Progress Movement have advocated from the start. I spoke with Mirsad about this recent development and what he feels this means for the country and the Platform for Progress Movement going forward. 16.08.2019. As Mirsad Hadzikadic continues to direct the efforts to formally organize the Platform for Progress Movement across Bosnia and Herzegovina and neighboring countries it has become much more evident as of recent that the message is being embraced more and more by people of all walks. But with this growth as the foundation for the Movement continues to be laid come new challenges that must be addressed. Mirsad and I recently spoke about the immense popularity of a recent Facebook Live interview with a well known Bosnian historical scholar and the growing sense of how the message is being embraced on many levels. 04.08.2019. Since 2005 the March of Peace has been held in Bosnia and Herzegovina in memory of the victims of the Srebrenica genocide in 1995 during the Bosnian War. It was then, on July 11th, that Serbian troops overran the UN safe zone that had been established in Srebrenica despite the presence of 450 Dutch UN peacekeepers and took over the city. In the ensuing days estimates are that between 10,000-15,000 men and boys fled to the nearest Muslim safe haven, the town of Tuzla, some 60 miles away. It was during that attempted escape that over 8,000 men and boys would be massacred by the Bosnian Serb troops, their bodies strewn and dumped in mass graves in the surrounding woods and countryside. The March of Peace traverses the same winding and mountainous dirt road between Srebrenica and Tuzla and is often referred to as “Death Road”. The three day march begins in Tuzla and ends in the small village of Potocari, a suburb of Srebrenica. It is here where the memorial center is located. Mass graves of the remains of those who have been found dot the hillside. In the center of town, a stone wall etched with the names of those who have been identified over the years. On day four, July 11, a service is held to honor those who lost their lives, and hold funerals for the remains of those found and identified through DNA testing over the course of the previous year. On July 8 of this year Mirsad and his wife Mirzeta joined thousands of others on the March of Peace. Survivors of the genocide and family members of those who lost their lives. Others came from small villages, towns and cities from across Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Europe and around the world to pay their respects and honor those who lost their lives during their flight from the Bosnian Serb army some 24 years ago. Mirsad and I spoke about the emotional yet rewarding experience. 26.07.2019.
Mirsad Hadzikadic has made no secret about the fact that expecting the unexpected and dealing with those challenges is part of the growth process of the Platform for Progress Movement in Bosnia and Herzegovina and elsewhere. This became very apparent recently in Zenica and Mostar, the fourth and sixth largest cities respectively in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He says that infighting was alive and well following the elections of individuals who will be in charge of the Platform for Progress Movement in those cities. Mirsad told me things became particularly intense in Zenica.

With the observance of Ramadan officially over, Mirsad and the Platform for Progress movement will be intensifying their outreach across Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as neighboring European countries. Formal organizational meetings are planned for at least six cities around the country in the coming week in addition to a trip to Italy. I recently spoke with Mirsad about the objectives of these coming meetings and town hall type gatherings and a recent appearance on Al Jazeera Balkans, as more media outlets are starting to take notice. 06.06.2019. Life for Mirsad Hadzikadic is quite reminiscent of his days on the presidential campaign trail just one short year ago. Personal appearances around the country have become frequent once again. They are a crucial part of his daily routine, as the Movement is formally organized in cities, towns and municipalities across Bosnia and Herzegovina in preparation for the local elections in 2020 and the general election in 2022. It’s during this outreach that Mirsad sees first hand the fruits of his labor and those who have stood beside him since the very beginning. Citizens from all walks of life are embracing the message that together change is no longer a dream but can become a reality. We recently spoke about his current outreach and what he is seeing and hearing as he travels the country. 29.05.2019. A recent trip to the United States proved quite fruitful for Mirsad Hadzikadic and the Platform for Progress Movement. In his US home for over 30 years, Charlotte, the first Constitutional Assembly in the US was formed. This same process was also begun in St. Louis, the largest population of Bosnians in the US and outside of Europe, in addition to Chicago. I had an opportunity to sit down with Mirsad in Charlotte before he headed back to Sarajevo to talk about the significance of these latest developments. Taj je proces započet i u St. Louisu u kojem, uz Chicago, živi najveća zajednica Bosanaca u Sjedinjenim Američkim Državama i uopšte izvan Evrope. 20.05.2019. As the Platform for Progress Movement becomes more and more established throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina, there is a growing sense of excitement within the ranks of the Movement as to what it could all mean for the pending 2020 local elections. This same excitement is being bolstered even more as the diaspora in neighboring European countries such as Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany are embracing the vision of hope and change that is spreading throughout their native land and are actively participating in the organization of the Movement in those countries. However, the organization the Platform for Progress Movement isn’t stopping in Europe. Mirsad Hadzikadic recently traveled back to the states to visit with family in Charlotte, but to also begin the process of organizing the Movement in key locations around the U.S. I had the opportunity to speak with Mirsad while he was in Charlotte and he shared his thoughts about what lies ahead on this side of the Atlantic. 10.04.2019. Mirsad reflects on his recent campaign to become President of Bosnia and his current building of a new political party, regarding the violent history of religious conflicts in that country. Bill and Mark discuss with him the possibility of encouraging integrity, trust, and tolerance across religious differences--with reference to Buddhism (involving non-political "emptiness") and Protestantism (with the humanist emphasis on a personal reading of scripture), as well as the Bosnian ethnic factions of Catholicism, Orthodox Christianity, and Islam.
Luke and Peter Pizzato, sons of Mark, join with him, Bill, and Mirsad to discuss the three global religions in relation to moral philosophy, death metal music, meditation goals, and spiritual experiences. What do youth today imagine as an ideal spiritual world? Should parents give their offspring a firm religious background or encourage an open-minded mixing of traditional values through spiritual seeking and personal choices?

Kent Brintnall, professor of Religious Studies at UNC-Charlotte, joins Bill, Mirsad, and Mark to discuss how religions interpret sexuality and shape gender identities. Is God or the Buddha figured as male to model spiritual transcendence--through a traditional fear of female (or transgendered) physical and communal powers? Do recent changes in patriarchal systems actually return to early developments initiated by Buddha, Jesus, or Mohammed?
Special guest Mike Corwin, an existentialist, physicist, and astronomer, tells about his belief in becoming, rather than being, about individual responsibility without God, and about the mysteries of the universe, from quantum entanglement to "negative energy." The discussion with Mirsad, Mark, and Bill compares these philosophical ideals and scientific wonders with religious doctrines of communal submission, divine judgment, and karmic reincarnation.
How do religious and secular ethics relate to moral intuitions and animal instincts? Bill, Mark, and Mirsad discuss the trajectories of human goodness or evil, reward or punishment, with the rival ethical systems of Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, and existential atheism--or their potential interplay today.
Mirsad, Bill, and Mark are joined by Jon Marks, Professor of Anthropology at UNC-Charlotte, to explore what is at stake in various creation stories, from science and the global religions--with a Museum of the Bible opening in Washington, DC, in November 2017, based on Evangelical Christian "creationism" (the belief in a literal truth to the 6-day creation story in Genesis), with Catholics reconciling biblical poetics and science, with Muslims believing in the Quran's creation story, and with Buddhists focusing on the process of re-creation across many life cycles, not a creator god, yet with non-scientific measurements of time in sacred texts.
With special guest, Nathan Redick, a fundamentalist Evangelical Christian, Mirsad, Mark, and Bill discuss traditions of authority for interpreting sacred texts in the three world religions, plus possible points of similarity or conflict in their own readings of the Bible, Quran, and Buddhist sutras. As A.I. evolves, through machine learning and creativity, will it gain human consciousness and a godlike power over us? Will computers become sentient beings and evoke our respect, or various emotions from us, like another soul? Will they offer us immortality or replace us with theirs? Bill, Mark, and Mirsad are joined by J D Elliott.
Along with moral rules (the Eightfold Path, Ten Commandments, or Shariah Law), what do the world's major religions offer as guiding principles for meaning and purpose in one's life? Bill, Mark, and Mirsad discuss their personal sense of such principles in the three traditions. How do they impact our society today--with the benefits of spiritual growth, ritual purification, and charitable compassion, but the dangers of elitism, superstition, and fanaticism?
Mirsad, Bill, and Mark discuss how free will and fate relate to neuroscience, computer science, and religion. What is the self (or soul) that chooses? Is it conscious or subconscious? Does God or Allah know and control our fate, according to Christianity and Islam? If there is ultimately no god or self, according to Buddhism, then does karma produce our fate? Can we still have a choice in how to act, to be good or bad, if Allah, God, or karma is all-powerful? How does that relate also to predictive computer modeling and "emergent properties" in complex adaptive systems?
Mirsad, Bill, and Mark discuss how Buddhism corresponds more to modern physics than to evolutionary biology--and how that compares with Christianity and Islam, in their fundamentalist and liberal directions.
