Each year for the last 20 years thousands have gathered from around the world to participate in the Peace March in Bosnia and Herzegovina to honor the more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys who were massacred by the Bosnian Serb force. The three-day walk traverses the same route in the mountains in reverse that the men and boys traveled while trying to escape the troops. This year, as he has done every year since 2018, Platform for Progress president Mirsad Hadzikadic participated in the march.

Today on Immigrantly, I'm excited to welcome the incredible Dr. Amra Sabic-El-Rayess. Amra is an Associate Professor at Columbia University, focusing on essential topics like social cohesion, the radicalization process, and how communities can hurt each other. But beyond her academic work, Amra has an incredible personal story—she survived the Bosnian war and genocide in the 1990s. She wrote a powerful book about her experience called "The Cat I Never Named: A True Story of Love, War, and Survival." For those who may not know, the Bosnian Genocide happened between 1992 and 1995 and involved horrific ethnic cleansing and mass killings, especially against Bosniak Muslims. The worst of it was the Srebrenica Massacre in July 1995, where over 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were killed. Immigrantly is a weekly podcast that celebrates the extraordinariness of immigrant life. We do this by providing our listeners with authentic, accurate insights into the immigrant identity in America. More than two weeks after the elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina on 2 October, the country's political future remains uncertain. While reformist and moderate candidates have seen success in the run for the country's presidency – a position that is shared between members of the Bosniak, Croat and Serb entities – many of Bosnia's underlying political divisions persist. Causing further dispute was the announcement of significant changes to Bosnia's constitution and electoral system on the night of the election by the country's high representative, Christian Schmidt, which were particularly ill-received by some members of the Bosniak community. Meanwhile, Serb leader Milorad Dodik has faced allegations of vote-rigging in the run for president of the semi-autonomous Republika Srpska leading to a recount of ballots in the region. In this episode of War & Peace, Olga Oliker and Elissa Jobson speak with Marko Prelec, Crisis Group's senior consulting analyst for the Balkans, about what happened at the Bosnian elections, the main dispute between Bosnia's political entities and where the country is headed. They talk about Bosnia's highly complicated election system and why it has been the cause of much friction between members of the Bosniak, Croat and Serb communities in the country. They address the intervention by the high representative on election night and whether this move had any merit despite being highly controversial. They also talk about the impact of the war in Ukraine on Bosnia and how it has affected its prospects for European Union accession. Finally, they assess whether the political divisions in Bosnia and Herzegovina are surmountable and how a potential return to violence in the country can be prevented. In this podcast episode we'll take a closer look at the relationship between the different ethnic groups in Mostar after the Balkan wars. What influences the resilience of different population groups to radicalization and violent extremism? One of the case study areas in the EU-funded PREVEX project is the Balkans. In this episode of the NUPI podcast The World Stage, we are zooming in on Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The famous bridge in Mostar represents a symbolic background for the social fabric that has suffered from the war in the 1990'ies. In 1993 the bridge was destroyed in the civil war that raged in the former Yugoslavia. On one side of the bridge, the Bosniak community was predominant, on the other side, the majority were Croats. The bridge was later rebuilt, but how are the relations between people in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in Mostar today, nearly three decades after the war ended? Do people from the different ethnic groups mix, socially, at school or at work? How is this different from before the war? What are the lessons to be learnt and what are the main challenges today? And with the recent general elections in the country, is there any hope for change? Listen in as Senior Research Fellow at NUPI, Kari Osland, discusses this with Professor Edina Becirevic (Security Studies at UNSA and co-founder of Atlantic Initiative) and politician Lana Prlic (Representative in the Parliament of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Vice President for SDP BiH). Episode 105: Renal Cell Carcinoma. Manpreet and Jon-Ade explain how to diagnose renal cell carcinoma. Introduction about age and kidney transplant by Dr. Arreaza and Dr. Yomi. Introduction: Too old for a new kidney?By Hector Arreaza, MD. Discussed with  Timiiye Yomi, MD.Today we will be talking about the kidneys, those precious bean-shaped organs that detoxify your blood 24/7. Amazingly, we can live normal lives with one kidney, but when the kidney function is not good enough to meet the body's demands, patients need to start kidney replacement therapy. Modern medicine has made a lot of advances with dialysis, but the perfection of a kidney has not been outperformed by any machine yet. That's why kidney transplant is the hope for many of our patients with end-stage kidney disease. The need for a kidney transplant is growing, likely due to increasing chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, and also because of an increase in elderly population. About 22% of patients on the kidney transplant waiting list are over age 65. A cut-off age to receive kidney transplant has not been established across the globe. Different countries use different criteria for the maximum age for transplant. The American Society of Transplantation's guidelines states “There should be no absolute upper age limit for excluding patients whose overall health and life situation suggest that transplantation will be beneficial.” So, if your patient is older than 65 and needs a kidney, they may qualify for a transplant, and age should not be an absolute contraindication to receive it. Actually, older patients may have lower risk of rejection due to a theoretically weaker immune system. A live donor is likely to be a better option for elderly patients. A condition that would make your elderly patient a poor candidate for kidney transplant would be frailty. Common contraindications to kidney transplant include active infections or malignancy, uncontrolled mental illness, ongoing addiction to substances, reversible kidney failure, and documented active and ongoing treatment nonadherence. So, remember to take these factors into consideration when deciding if you need to refer your elderly patients for a kidney transplant, there is no such thing as being too old for a new kidney if your patient meets all the criteria for a transplant. This is Rio Bravo qWeek Podcast, your weekly dose of knowledge brought to you by the Rio Bravo Family Medicine Residency Program from Bakersfield, California. Visit your primary care physician for additional medical advice. Renal Cell Carcinoma. By Manpreet Singh, MS3, Ross University School of Medicine, and Jon-Ade Holter, MS3 Ross University School of Medicine. Moderated by Hector Arreaza, MD. Definition:Renal cell carcinoma is a primary neoplasm arising form the renal cortex. 80-85 percent of renal tumors are renal cell carcinomas followed closely by transitional cell renal cancer and Wilms tumor.  Epidemiology: In 2022, 79,000 new cases of kidney cancer were diagnosed with almost 14,000 mortalities. There is a 2:1 male to female ratio and the average age is 64 and normally 65-74. African Americans and American Indians have a higher prevalence rate compared to other racial groups. The lifetime risk for developing kidney cancer in men is about 1 in 46 (2.02%) and 1 in 80 (1.03%) in women.  Risk Factors associated with RCC: Anything that causes assault to the kidneys and affects its function would cause increased demand, injury, and inflammation. This assault can lead to cell derangement and lead to cancer. The risk factors that have been associated with RCC are smoking, obesity, HTN, family history of kidney cancer, Trichloroethylene (a metal degreaser used in large manufacturing factories), acetaminophen, and patients with advanced kidney disease needing dialysis. Patients with syndromes that cause multiple types of tumors: VHL (von Hippel-Lindau) deficiency, a tumor suppressor, gives rise to clear cell renal cell carcinoma. Familial inheritance of VHL deficiency is mostly found in patients that have RCC at a very young age, before 40 y/o. Other tumors can be found in the eye, brain, spinal cord, pancreas, and pheochromocytomas.Hereditary leiomyoma-renal cell carcinoma due to FH gene mutations causing women who have leiomyomas to have a higher risk of developing papillary RCC.Birt-Hogg-Dube (BHD) syndrome mutation in FLCN gene who develop various skin and renal tumors.Cowden syndrome is a mutation in the PTEN gene giving rise to cancers associated with breast, thyroid , and kidney cancers.Tuberous sclerosis causes benign tumors of the skin, brain, lungs, eyes, kidneys, and heart. Although kidney tumors are most often benign, occasionally they can be clear cell RCC. Screening For RCC:Screening is unnecessary because of the low prevalence of this cancer in the general population, though certain groups require annual repeat imaging via US, CT, or MRI. Inherited conditions that are associated with RCC such as VHL syndrome or Tuberous SclerosisESRD patients who have been on dialysis for 3-5 yearsFamily history of RCCPrior kidney irradiation Clinical Picture: Most patients with RCC are asymptomatic until cancer grows large enough to cause disruption of local organs, such as the kidney, bladder, or renal vein, and dysregulates other organs via metastasis. Therefore, it's important to look at other signs and symptoms caused by RCC.  The patient most likely will be an older male who presents with the classic triad of: Flank pain: caused by rapid expansion and stretching of the renal capsule.Hematuria: occurs from the invasion of the neoplasm into the collecting duct.Palpable abdominal mass: mass tends to be homogenous and mobile with respirations. Though this presents only in 9% of patients during the presentation, having physical symptoms is a sign of advanced disease and 25% of patients with these signs tend to have distant metastasis.  Anemia: normally associated with anemia of chronic disease. It precedes the disease by at least 8 months to 1 year. Males can develop varicoceles because of decreased emptying due to neoplasm obstruction. Patients normally develop varicoceles on the left due to the spermatic vein emptying in the higher resistance left renal vein, which causes backup of the blood in the pemphigus plexus. Though a right-sided varicocele should raise a higher suspicion of obstruction due to the spermatic vein draining directly into the IVC which is lower in resistance. A right-sided varicocele is seen in approximately 11 percent of patients. The paraneoplastic syndrome can also arise from RCCEpo: Erythrocytosis with symptoms of weakness, fatigue, headache, and joint pain.PTHrP: PTH-related peptide acts like PTH which gives rise to hypercalcemia with the prevalent symptoms of arthritis, osteolytic lesions, confusions, tetany, ventricular tachycardia, shortened QTc, and nausea and vomiting.Renin: overproduction from the juxtaglomerular cells can cause disarrangement of the RAAS system causing hypertension.Others also like ACTH and beta-HCG. Other disorders present include hepatic dysfunction, cachexia, secondary amyloidosis, and thrombocytosis. Workup If a patient comes in with painless hematuria, then the first test should be abdominal CT or abdominal ultrasound. A CT is more sensitive than the US but it can quickly indicate if the abdominal mass felt can be a cyst or a solid tumor.  US of kidneys should show if it's a simple cyst:-The cyst is round and sharply demarcated with smooth walls- It's anechoic – appears solid black-There is a strong posterior wall echo-Use the Bosniak classification to classify mass  Bosniak I: benign simple cyst with thin wall less than equal to 2mm, no septa or calcifications. No future workup is needed. Bosniak II: benign cyst, 3 cm diameter, requires f/u with US/CT/MRI at 6 months, 12 months, and annually for the next 5 years. Chance of malignancy: 5%.  Bosniak III: indeterminate cystic mass with thick, irregular or smooth walls. This requires nephrectomy or radiofrequency ablation. Chance of malignancy: 55%  Bosniak IV: Clearly a malignancy its grade III with enhancing soft tissue components that its independent from the wall or septum. Requires total or partial nephrectomy. Chance of malignancy 100%.  CT of the kidneys for a neoplasm should show:-Thickened irregular walls or septa -Enhancement after contrast injection are suggestive of malignancy-CT can also help detect invasion in local tissue areas such as renal vein and perinephric organs  MRI is used if the patient cannot use contrast or kidney function is poor. MRI can also evaluate the growth of the cancer. Other imaging studies:Other imaging studies that may be useful for assessing for distant metastases include bone scan, CT of the chest, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography (PET)/CT. Treatment and staging Nephrectomy, partial or total, will be used as the initial tissue collection for pathology. If the patient is not a surgical candidate, you can also obtain a percutaneous biopsy. The nephrectomy is preferred because first, it serves as a definitive treatment option, but also it allows for definitive staging of the cancer with tumor and nodal staging. Regardless of the size, any solid mass may indicate malignancy and point towards RCC, requiring resection.   TNM staging Stage I: Tumor is 7cm across or smaller and only in the kidney with no lymph nodes or distant mets. T1N0M0 Stage IIa: Tumor size is larger than 7cm but still in the kidney but no invasion of lymph node or mets. T2N0M0 Stage IIb: Tumor is growing into the renal vein or IVC, but not into neighboring organs such as adrenals or Gerota's fascia and still lacks lymph node invasion and mets. T3N0M0.  Stage III: Tumor can be any size but has not invaded outside structures such as adrenals, though nearby lymph node invasion is present but not distant. There is no distant mets. T3N1M0. Stage IV:  The main tumor is beyond the Gerota's fascia and may grow into the adrenal gland . It may or may not spread to the lymph nodes or may not have distant mets. Stage IV also consists of any cancer that has any number of distant mets. T4 Adjuvant therapy can be done with immune therapy. Conclusion: Now we conclude our episode number 105 “Renal cell carcinoma.” This type of cancer may be asymptomatic until it is large enough to cause symptoms. Keep it on your list of differentials on patients with hematuria, flank pain, weight loss, and abnormal imaging. Keep in mind the features of simple kidney cysts vs complex cysts when assessing kidney ultrasounds. Your patient will be grateful for an early diagnosis of RCC and a prompt treatment. Even without trying, every night you go to bed being a little wiser. This week we thank Hector Arreaza, Timiiye Yomi, Manpreet Singh, Jon-Ade Holter. Thanks for listening to Rio Bravo qWeek Podcast. Bosnia and Herzegovina: The Quest for Change

For Mirsad Hadźikadić, media coverage by state run outlets during his 2018 presidential campaign in Bosnia and Herzegovina, was virtually non-existent. However, with his recent announcement that he will run for the Bosniak presidential council seat once again in 2022, that blockade seems to have eased, at least for the time being. Recently, he was asked to sit down for an interview at the only state run TV station that is broadcast across the entire country. We spoke about the interview, and the heightened awareness of the newly formed political coalition, The Country.

Women were raped before being killed. The president of the Platform for Progress, Mirsad Hadžikadić, attended this year's memorial service. Boris leads TENE through the rise of the Bosniak national idea in the 19th and early 20th centuries to Muslim collaboration in the Second World War. Despite a multiplicity of identities and politics among Musilms in Bosnia, shifting imperial borders and modernizing land reforms spur a nationalist turn among Bosnian Muslim landowners. Enter Mehmed Spaho who attempts to create a single national identity through his Muslim Yugoslav Organization, leaving the project to Džafer-beg Kulenović after his death who will eventually become vice president of the fascist Independent State of Croatia. Boris discusses the on-again, off-again relationship between Ustashas and Muslim collaborationists leading both to the formation of the SS Handschar Division and, believe it or not, Muslim Chetniks. Fritz briefly narrates the Villefranche-de-Rouergue Mutiny of '43 of Muslim SS trainees and Boris recounts the nutty tale of independent warlord Husein "Huska" Miljković who went from the Commies to Fascists and back again. To top it all off, Rey discusses Husein Đozo, SS major, imam and buddy of Grand Mufti Amin al-Husseini and Boris discusses the slow momentum of Muslim involvement in the Partizan movement. Also, Fritz fails to differentiate 'đ' and 'dž', Muslim Goths, Rey re-considers serfdom, and hot cadastral stats! Harvard scholar Danilo Mandic's new book Gangsters and Other Statesmen says this wasn't just a Balkan phenomenon. *) Countries bar arrivals from UK over new virus strain A slew of countries worldwide have banned arrivals from the UK over a new highly infectious coronavirus strain. Among the countries banning arrivals are Turkey, several EU nations, Canada, Chile and Argentina. Scientists first discovered the new variant – which they believe is 70 percent more transmissible – in a patient in September. Experts say the UK mutation is "very unlikely" to be resistant to current vaccines. *) US Congress reaches deal on virus stimulus package US lawmakers have agreed on a nearly $900 billion Covid-19 relief package for millions of Americans. The package includes aid for vaccine distribution and logistics, extra jobless benefits and a new round of $600 stimulus cheques. The much-awaited deal comes after months of partisan debate and finger-pointing as well as last-minute negotiations. *) Ethnic parties are the winner in Bosnia's Mostar Early results of the local election in the Bosnian town of Mostar show most votes going to Croat and Bosniak parties. A coalition of multi-ethnic moderate parties, the BH Bloc, won enough votes to act as a kingmaker in the future 35-member city council. Croat and Bosniak communities in the town have been separated since the end of the civil war in the mid-1990s. *) Abduction of school students foiled in Nigeria Gunmen in Nigeria abducted more than 80 school students on Saturday but the pupils were rescued by security forces soon after. The bandits on Saturday night abducted four people and stolen a dozen cows in Katsina state when they ran into the schoolchildren who were going home. The foiled abduction comes less than two days after the release of 344 schoolboys, who were kidnapped in the same state last week. And finally… *) Denmark to exhume minks culled over coronavirus Four million minks culled in Denmark over a coronavirus strain will be dug up next year to prevent pollution. That’s according to the government who has faced criticism for its management of the "mink crisis". If lawmakers agree, the mink carcasses will be dug up and burned in six months once the risk of infection has completely passed.

Mostar er Bosnien-Hercegovinas mest splittede by. MUSEUM OM KRIG OG FOLKEMORD Jeg besluttede mig for at bruge et par timer i 'Museum of War and Genocide Victims'. Som det står på væggen i museet: “The terror of forgetting is greater than the terror of having too much to remember” Derfor føler jeg, det er vigtigt at besøge The ‘Museum of War and Genocide Victims 1992-1995’, selvom det bestemt ikke er en opløftende oplevelse. See pictures here. DOBRO DOŠLI U MOSTAR Again, I go by bus to my next Balkan destination. This time north from Kotor in Montenegro to Mostar in the southern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was one of the other guests at the hostel in Kosovo – an English guy called Edward, that recommended Mostar and Rooms Deny to me. There's a river that runs through Mostar from the north to the south and cuts the city in two halves. Deny, the owner of ‘Rooms Deny', the hostel I'd booked, came to pick me up at the bus station, and even though both the bus station and the hostel are on the eastern side, we're taking a bit of a detour into the western side because cars are not allowed in the old town. That gives Deny time to do his ‘tour guide introduction' to Mostar. DENY IS THE PERFECT TOUR GUIDE My host Deny Kadric is a very open young man and has an impressive knowledge about his country and especially Mostar. As we see the iconic Stari Most Bridge (the Old Bridge) for the first time, Deny asks me what I know about Mostar other than the bridge. But no, I didn't even know about the bridge, and since that's the most iconic thing about Mostar, I didn't know much. Or anything – other than what Edward told me. That it's a quaint little city with a lot of history. We'll get back to this bridge and why it's so important later on in this episode. SMALL COUNTRY WITH TWO NAMES Bosnia and Herzegovina is home to 3.8 million people – and it's important that you say both names. Basically, it's too regions with Bosnia in the north and Herzegovina in the south. In fact, I'm not even in Bosnia. Mostar is in Herzegovina and has a population of 113,000 and is Bosnia and Herzegovina's most divided city. Nowhere is this more evident than in Mostar, where Bosnian Croatians live on the western side of the Neretva River, and Bosniaks on the eastern side. Even to this day, more than 25 years after the war, this is still the case. They rarely go to the other side and interact with the people on the other side. Both sides have their own national theatre, post office, and other separate public services. Deny tells me that he does have friends on both sides, but he's more the exception to the rule. THE SCARS OF THE WAR IN MOSTAR Deny recommended that I took 45 minutes to see a documentary called Unfinished Business in Mostar before I walked out to explore. It's a BBC documentary presented by Jeremy Bowen, filmed in 1993 in and around Mostar at the height of the Bosniak-Croat conflict during the Bosnian War. And I did, and already one minute in we see some guys come running with a wheelbarrow to get an old man that had just been shot. They wanted to rush him to the hospital. He'd just stepped out of his house to get some water when it happened. At the hospital, a doctor gives him CPR in an attempt to revive him. But there was nothing he could do – he was dead on arrival and his old wife breaks down. These first few minutes of the documentary sets the tone for the rest of it. It's heartbreaking but I suggest you see it. We should all see it and learn from it. It's surreal to walk around in the streets of Mostar after seeing them as a war zone. You can still see the scars of the war. Many of the buildings are still in ruins and you see bullet-holes on the walls everywhere. STARI MOST BRIDGE WAS DESTROYED The Siege of Mostar was fought during the Bosnian War first in 1992 and then again later in 93-94. As a result of the first siege around 90,000 residents of Mostar fled … and many religious buildings, cultural institutions, and bridges were damaged or destroyed. Between June 93 and April 94, the besieged Bosniak-concentrated East Mostar, resulting in the deaths of many civilians, a cut off of humanitarian aid, damage or destruction of ten mosques, and then the blowing up of the historic Stari Most bridge on November 9, 1993. Croatian general Slobodan Praljak was deemed the main responsible for the destruction of the bridge and sentenced to twenty years. He was the one who declared that "those stones" (meaning the bridge) had no value. Stari Most Bridge, also known as The Old Bridge and Mostar Bridge, connects the two parts of the city. It was a 16th-century Ottoman bridge and stood for 427 years, until that day in ‘93. After the war, a project was set in motion to reconstruct it; the rebuilt bridge – that looks like the old one opened on 23 July 2004. It's now an iconic tourist attraction. It stands 20 meters over the river and often you can see people jumping of it into the water. MUSEUM OF WAR AND GENOCIDE VICTIMS I decide to spend a few hours at the ‘Museum of War and Genocide Victims 1992-1995'. It's a small but interesting and very moving museum about the events leading up to the breakup of the former Yugoslavia.  The way the history of the war is explained is very moving and extremely touching. What the people of Bosnia and especially Mostar have been through is unimaginable. The personal stories of those who lived through these times are as always, the most moving.  It's an important part of the history of Bosnia Herzegovina and Mostar and anyone visiting it must go to the Museum out of respect for the victims and locals who suffered through this. There are some very graphic shocking photos on display. Also, three TVs each showing different stories about the war and the concentration camps. There is quite a bit to read as each display and picture has a story behind it. On the lower floor this is where the more graphic photos are displayed so if your easily upset – or if you're bringing your kids, I would skip this part.  All in all, it's horrific to see what happened, but I feel it's an important visit to get a clearer view of what happened and why it should never happen again. There's a part of the museum talking about war crimes – with so many pictures of people doing something against the Hague and Geneva Conventions. And that's what bothers me the most. How could this happen – with the second World War in recent memory. Didn't we learn anything? As it says on the wall in the museum: “The terror of forgetting is greater than the terror of having too much to remember” That's why I feel it's important to visit places like this, even though it's not an upbeat uplifting experience. 6 FUN FACTS ABOUT BOSNIA HERZEGOVINA Bosnia Herzegovina is nicknamed the “Heart-Shaped Land” due to the country's slight heart shape. When you look at a map, you would think that Bosnia Herzegovina is landlocked but if you look very closely you will notice that they have the smallest little panhandle which touches the Adriatic Sea for only about 25 kilometres or 15 miles. One of Europe's last jungles can be found here. Situated on the border of Montenegro, Perućica is one of two remaining jungles forests in Europe. Some of the trees here are 300 years old, and the undisturbed forest vintage dates back 20,000 years.  Bosnia has three official languages: Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian. They are pretty similar and they all understand each other. Kinda like Danish Norwegian and Swedish… or American, Irish and Australian… I think. The name “Bosnia” comes from an Indo-European word Bosana, which means water. Herzegovina stems from the Serbo-Croatian term borrowed from German, Hercegovina, a land ruled by a Herzog – the German term for a duke. They like coffee here… Bosnia Herzegovina has the tenth highest coffee consumption per capita in the world.   HERZEGOVINA TOUR SOUTH OF MOSTAR With a group of other guests from the hostel, I go on a day-trip in beautiful Herzegovina with Deny as the tour guide. He takes us about 30 kilometers (19 mi) south of Mostar. After a local breakfast, we go on a hike in some astonishing landscapes to the waterfalls in Kravica and then to Počitelj – the historic village and an open-air museum with a fortress in the mountains. In the middle ages, it was the administrative center and center of governance of the county, and its westernmost point, which gave it major strategic importance. It is supposed that the fortified walled town was built in 1383 and well worth a visit. BRUCE LEE STATUE IN MOSTAR For some reason here in Mostar there's a statue of kong-fu expert Bruce Lee. The statue was the first public monument to Bruce Lee anywhere in the world and was unveiled in November 2005. Why you may ask: The idea came from a youth group called Mostar Urban Movement, and they saw the statue as “a symbol of "loyalty, skill, friendship and justice." In a city that had been torn in war by ethnic divisions, they see the dynamic movie star as a part of their idea of universal justice – that the good guys can win. They feel that Bruce Lee represented one thing that could bridge the divides between Mostar residents: "One thing we all have in common is Bruce Lee" they said. Shortly afterwards the sculpture was vandalized, removed for repairs and brought back at the end of May 2013. Both Bosnians and Croats had complained that the statue was a provocation because they thought it was pointed towards their area in a fighting stance, so its creators rotated the statue to face a neutral direction.   HIT THE ROAD JACK Back in Mostar we go walk across the Old Bridge to the west side, for dinner and drinks at the iconic Black Dog Pub, and we all sing along to Hit the Road Jack. And then it's time for me to hit the road myself, and my next stop is Croatia. My name is Palle Bo and I gotta keep moving.     I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU First, I want to mention that I would love to hear from you and now there's a new and simple way for you to send me a voice message. It's a cool little web-based app called Tellbee and all you have to do is here: TALK TO ME and talk. Tell me where you are and what you're doing when you listen to this. It's super simple and one of the cool things is that you can listen to it and redo it if you're not happy with it – before you click send. I get a small soundbite I can play on the show and it's always wonderful to hear from you guys. You can off course also just fill out the form under contact on the website. SPONSOR This episode is supported in part by Hotels25.com where you always can find the best prices on hotels, guesthouses and hostels – like Rooms Deny, that I stayed at here in Mostar.

As a teenager in 1992, he and his family fled hthe Serbian-controlled Bosnia to his mother’s Croatian hometown named Vela Luka. From Croatia they had to leave in a year for safety first in Kuwait and subsequently to Slovenia when Croatian troops began their attacks on Bosnia and Herzegovina. After drifting as a refugee in Kuwait, Slovenia and later Italy for several years, Demir was resettled in UK where he resumed his high school education, and completed BSc in internet engineering at Southbank University in London. In UK, he began his human rights activism and went on to become a founding member of the Islamic Human Rights Commission. In 2005, with a group of other human rights-minded Bosniaks. Introduction From the Spanish Inquisition, and before, to today, True Believers have been attacking people, cancelling people is the new term. Cancelled physically by killing, or psychologically and financially by insults, false accusations and specious accusations of, well, simply not being pure enough, of not having always shown 100% consistency with current hard and fast true beliefs. No matter how often current orthodoxy may change, those who are True Believers in the orthodoxy preached by their chosen group are all in to the point where nothing else is at all acceptable. That is the subject of today’s 10-minute episode.  Continuing The entire “You are with me or you are against me.” thought process is invading virtually every part of our lives. And dividing our country and our friends and families.  Here’s how to fix all of that. Start with a search for common goals. Do not start with a statement of how right you are.  Let’s take a look at some of our history and see if there are any lessons for today. WWI was a horrific affair, with tens of millions of dead, maimed and ruined lives. Often people ask how any war started, and sometimes there is a clear--if unsatisfactory--answer. WWII started in Europe when Germany attacked Poland, and later attacked Russia. Attacks led by True Believer Adolph Hitler and his Believer followers. It started in the Pacific when Japan attacked the US. Japan was led by True Believer General Hideki Tojo, Prime Minister during the war, and his Believer followers. The Allies, mainly the US, Russia, France and Britain, had clear and well justified reasons to fight the Axis; Germany, Italy and Japan. The Korean War started when the North attacked the South. The justification, to save South Korea and to contain communism, was less universally acclaimed, but still justified. The Korean and Chinese True Believers lit this fire.  Vietnam, also justified as necessary to contain communism, was simply an exercise in futility, and a monument to ambition and ignorance. But the “think tank” in Washington, to me exemplified by the lead “numbers man”  Robert McNamara, a senior American business executive and Secretary of Defense, serving from 1961 to 1968 under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. McNamara was dead (pun intended) wrong about the war, and 58,000 Anericans paid the ultimate price for his beliefs. Ah, but he was a True Believer. He Truly Believed in supporting a corrupt Catholic government in Buddhist South Vietnam. He Truly Believed that by observing the greater numbers of the enemy killed vs the number of Americans killed, that we were willing. He seems to have forgotten that you win wars by taking--and holding--ground. But he was a numbers man. And a True Believer. Now to WWI. Most of us learned that it started when Archduke Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated. A young Serbia Muslim, Gavrilo Princip, participated, along with 4 other Serbs and a Bosniak, in assassinating the heir-apparent to the Austrio-Hungarian empire. A series of threats, demands and insults created a clash of egos that exploded into WWI. It is not unlike a bar fight, where no one really knows how it started, but there is blood and bodies everywhere. Princip was a True Believer. Kaiser Wilhem, II of Germany, a major player, was a True Believer. As were many of the young men from both sides who were taught that God was on their side. Despite the death and destruction, despite new weapons of war; airplanes, gas and machine guns, virtually nothing was decided. But enough True Believers were left from both sides to help trigger WWII. (In a telling twist, Muslim Serbia sees Princip as a hero, Christian Bosnia sees him as a traitor.) Communism, a far greater killer than Nazism, is fueled and expanded by True Believers. How else could any political/economic system, that has never worked anywhere, get away with killing 40 million people in Stalin’s Russia and 80 million in Mao’s China,

This podcast is my personal open-ended conversation centered around a question I commonly get from patients, friends, and family, “Why Urology?”  In this podcast episode, I will be talking about renal or kidney cysts. I will also introduce the Bosniak classification of renal or kidney cysts which helps doctors differentiate simple and complex renal cysts with regard to the risk that the cyst might be cancerous. Kidney cysts are common. The incidence increases as people age. An estimated 50 percent of people will have kidney cysts by age 50. Fortunately, most kidney cysts are what we call “simple” cysts. A simple cyst is like a water balloon, thin walled and round, with a water density fluid filling it. Here are four basic things you need to remember about kidney cysts: Simple kidney cysts usually do not cause symptoms or reduce kidney function. Most all simple kidney cysts are found during imaging tests done for other reasons. Treatment is not needed for simple kidney cysts that do not cause any symptoms. The chance that a simple kidney cyst leads to cancer is very low. The thing about most things in medicine, and about renal cysts as well, is that things are not always simple. The Bosniak Classification of a renal cyst helps doctors determine which cysts need close follow-up or surgery.

Only four episodes in and we've worked "ass" in to the title twice.   The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, occurred on 28 June 1914 in Sarajevo when they were shot dead by Gavrilo Princip. Princip was one of a group of six assassins (five Serbs and one Bosniak) coordinated by Danilo Ilić, a Bosnian Serb and a member of the Black Hand secret society. The political objective of the assassination was to break off Austria-Hungary's South Slav provinces so they could be combined into a Yugoslavia. The assassins' motives were consistent with the movement that later became known as Young Bosnia. The assassination led directly to the First World War when Austria-Hungary subsequently issued an ultimatum to the Kingdom of Serbia, which was partially rejected. Austria-Hungary then declared war, triggering actions leading to war between most European states. In charge of these Serbian military conspirators was Chief of Serbian Military Intelligence Dragutin Dimitrijević, his right-hand man Major Vojislav Tankosić, and the spy Rade Malobabić. Tankosić armed the assassins with bombs and pistols and trained them. The assassins were given access to the same clandestine network of safe-houses and agents that Malobabić used for the infiltration of weapons and operatives into Austria-Hungary. The assassins, the key members of the clandestine network, and the key Serbian military conspirators who were still alive were arrested, tried, convicted and punished. Those who were arrested in Bosnia were tried in Sarajevo in October 1914. The other conspirators were arrested and tried before a Serbian court on the French-controlled Salonika Front in 1916–1917 on unrelated false charges; Serbia executed three of the top military conspirators. Much of what is known about the assassinations comes from these two trials and related records. From wikipedia:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassination_of_Archduke_Franz_Ferdinand_of_Austria

Our next guest on This Writing Life podcast is the journalist and novelist Kevin Sullivan. His latest novel, The Longest Winter, is set during the siege of Sarajevo, which began almost twenty-five-years ago to the day in April 1992. Sullivan covered the conflict as a journalist, and almost lost his life in the nearby town of Gornji Vakuf, when the Land Rover he was travelling in hit a landmine. Sullivan began The Longest Winter shortly after, whilst recuperating in Glasgow, but it would take many more years for the final story to be completed. ----more----In Part 1 of our conversation, Sullivan describes the liberal, tolerant Sarajevo that existed before the conflict broke out: '[It] has had a long tradition of creative co-existence among different cultures. Bosnia was in many ways a model for the rest of Europe. They were practicing multi-culturalism long before the rest of Europe.' From here, we moved between The Longest Winter and the political back-drop to the Bosnian war - how Serbian, Croat and Bosniak politicians exploited nationalism to create emnities  Sullivan begins by discussing his work for the International Commission for Missing Persons, that has worked tirelessly to find the thousands murdered during the Srebrenica genocide, for example. A mosque that was demolished by Serb forces in Bosnia's civil war has been re-opened in Banja Luka. Banja Luka's historical Ferhadija Mosque has been re-built and re-consecrated. Serb forces had demolished the house of worship in 1993 during Bosnia's civil war. Kemal Gunić spent years lobbying for the reconstruction, collecting donations and helping to organize the construction work. Again and again, Serb nationalists opposed to the mosque staged protests that often turned violent. When the cornerstone was laid in 2001, Kemal Gunić witnessed the stoning of a fellow Bosniak. He was determined that there be no rioting at the mosque's re-opening. A peaceful ceremony would send a vital signal to, among others, all those Muslims who still don't trust the peace process between Serbs and Bosniaks.
