Hi mamas. Join me for this beautiful conversation with Zoe Blaskey, mum of two and the woman behind the Motherkind Podcast. Zoe invited me to be a guest on her podcast a few months ago, and so I was excited to return the invite and have her come on Life After Birth to share more of her story and insights with you all.  In this conversation, Zoe shares with me about her own upbringing, and reflects on the ‘credits' and ‘debits' of her childhood and the role they played in her life and the forming of her core patterns. We discuss her transition into mothering, and explore what Zoe calls her perfectionist tendencies and her inner critic during her early years of mothering.  Zoe talks about the importance and power of self-compassion, re-parenting yourself, and nurturing a kinder inner voice, for your own wellbeing but also to pass this on as a ‘credit' to our own children. We also discuss: -       The story behind Zoe starting the Motherkind Podcast and platform. -       The shift that can come from parts work and in finding compassion for the parts within. -       The importance of decision-making, implementing boundaries and living a life of alignment and authenticity.    You can listen to the Motherkind podcast episode I was on at the link below:Listen to the podcast Here is where you can find out more about me (Yara), how to work with me and some resources:Why Am I So Angry Workshop*** Waitlist for The Rebirth, Group Coaching for Mamas *** This is my signature 3 months online group coaching container for mothers which covers family of origin, inner child work, nervous system basics, anger, boundaries and much more. @lifeafterbirthpsychology  www.lifeafterbirth.com.auFree Inner Critic WorkbookFree Values Aligned Living Workbook  Find out more about Zoe and access her resources in these places:https://www.motherkind.co/Zoe on Instagram

For those of you who don't know Zoe Blaskey, she is the founder of Motherland, the host of the brilliant podcast of the same name and a transformational coach. For those that do know her I think you will be delighted by this open and honest conversation, from which I learned so much.  Zoe is a mother of two and openly speaks about learning to lean into what she was struggling with, which was every aspect of motherhood. This conversation is full of nuggets of wisdom and simply a joy to listen to – in it we discuss: How to deal with big emotions - we might be brought up to believe we are ‘too much' and block our emotions through many negative behaviours, but over time we can train ourselves to respond differently, by allowing them and even validating them.  How change takes a huge amount of learning – whether it's books, workshops, therapy and podcasts. Whilst the process can take longer than we want or choose.  The emotional load of motherhood and what can protect us from burn out.  The division of labour between two parents – how old systems can get played out unconsciously and now there is a NEW way – through the book Fair Play (see below for link).  The power and gift of handwritten letters that we send or even write but don't send.   When we look at transgenerational patterns it opens up our understanding and compassion for our parents and grandparents. It has the ability to change our outlook and increases our level of appreciation towards them. This is an episode that I think you can go back and revisit time and time again, you will see yourself in it, your children, your parents, siblings and partner. It will provide you with a new way of seeing yourself and others which might be empowering or a relief. The reaction she gets shows that Laura's is a voice people are wanting to hear from, and as one of Steph's favourite topics, they get into it! They discuss the wider impact on society of inequality at home, how writing lists isn't the solution, and ask why women are ok in their own discomfort for everyone else's comfort.Steph asks Laura, if we're asking men to do more, what's in it for them? Steph and Laura also raise the massive question – if you do raise the mental load as an issue with your partner and they don't respond in any way except negatively, where does that leave you? Laura is a facilitator of the Fair Play Method; founded by Eve Rodsky, Fair Play is ‘a time and anxiety saving system that offers couples a completely new way to divvy up their domestic responsibilities'. Steph and Laura discuss how this is a huge change from what society has expected from women, but one that when ignored, is often leaving women resentful and ultimately jeopardising relationships. Today's conversation is with Zoe Blaskey of the Motherkind podcast. As a self-declared 'recovering perfectionist' and transformational coach, I thought she would be the ideal person to speak to about perfectionism, a trait that I see so frequently in the clinic with the clients I work with. While perfectionism has its benefits, it can be a real blocking factor in improving relationships with food, or just getting started on a path to better health, even if both outcomes are really desired! I hope you find this episode of interest and help.   www.nicola-moore.com   Short Bio: Zoe Blaskey is a qualified transformational and executive coach specialising in working with parents and the founder of Motherkind, a personal development platform for parents. Welcome to this very special episode of the Motherkind Podcast created in partnership with the innovative and conscientious Whirli. I am super excited to be working with Whirli which is the UKs revolutionary toy subscription service. Think of it as the sharing economy for toys. It makes so much sense, doesn't it? Sharing toys. What children like to play with changes so quickly and you can never predict what they are going to love or not even play with at all. I certainly would not like to add up all the money I have wasted on toys the girls never played with. Not to mention the additional mental load of researching and buying the right toys at the right time. I love Whirli because it's a solution to all of that. Plus, it's so much more sustainable than each of us buying all those toys. Think of it as a more affordable & sustainable alternative to buying toys. And more fun and memorable. This episode is created in partnership with Whirli because I was thinking about the best way to tell you about Whirli and the service, and I think this is it! I actually interview its founder Nigel Phan. Because who better to explain it. Let me know what you think of the sharing economy for toys. Will it work for you? And if you like this episode then I recommend you listen to, if you haven't already, my conversation with Jen Gale Ep 140 You have more power than you think. In 2018, Nigel left his corporate job to start Whirli - a venture that uses the power of sharing to help parents save money, declutter their homes, and consume eco-consciously. Nigel is also very passionate about helping children maximise their potential and opportunities. At Whirli, a strong emphasis is placed on early years development and the importance of learning through play. Welcome to this very special episode of the Motherkind Podcast created in partnership with our lovely friends at Barbie. Do you remember last year when we had Dr. Michele Borba on the show talking about this amazing new research that Barbie had done with Cardiff University about doll play and empathy? Well, that study for the first time ever, through neuroimaging, showed that doll play activates the part of the brain that allows children to develop empathy and social processing skills. So many of you loved that episode. I think for lots of us it was a real aha moment that doll play even when played alone, can help develop those empathy skills that we want our children to have. I think that was especially important and interesting given the backdrop of the pandemic when those social interactions had been so limited. This episode is like the next installment to that conversation. Lots of you got in touch and asked about how to help your children play with dolls. So we have an amazing play expert on, Emma from the Playful Den. What Emma doesn't know about play isn't worth knowing. She is incredible. What I really took from this episode is that I am becoming increasingly fascinated with doll play and, secondly, just how amazing doll play is for helping our children understand the world around them. And don't we need that for them right now. It is created in partnership with Barbie - I hope you love it. We chat about: What's really going on when children play How to use doll play to help our children develop empathy How to process different social situations I think it is a real shame that doll play is associated as a girl's activity.- Emma, The Playful Den As always, we continue the conversation over on Instagram, so come and join us there. I've never been good at meditation or anything that requires sitting still for long periods of time but, lately, my new practice has been 'seven minute meditations.' This week, I talk about what happened when I tried to meditate and share the feelings that came up when I finally made time to sit and listen to myself. We discuss the idea of being enough, our lives being the perfect springboard to dive into ourselves, and how to practically find our own truths hidden beneath the layers. We also touch on topics of love, compassion, and exploring the defence mechanisms we've learnt from experience. Mentioned in this episode are two Podcasts - Happy Place and The Motherkind Podcast. Do you ever feel as if everyone else is getting life right but you are failing at it?  Have you had the feeling that you are not enough just as you are? Do you find yourself putting off doing things until the conditions are right or you feel more qualified or resourced? Are you afraid that someday you'll be found out as the imposter you are? Do you suffer from parental guilt? Are you exhausted? You may be a perfectionist. This week's episode is with Zoe Blaskey. Zoe is the founder of Motherkind, a self-empowerment platform for modern mums. Through Motherkind Zoe coaches mothers of all backgrounds from Global CEO's to stay at home mums on how to navigate the huge challenges of modern motherhood. Zoe also hosts The Motherkind Podcast and speaks every week to leading experts on a range of topics from self-care, mental health, to career, nutrition and parenting. Zoe shares with us how she got into the work she does now, having had a breakdown at the age of 23 and then found healing. She describes how the birth of her daughter was a catalyst for her to make changes in her life. She had been a people-pleaser and a perfectionist and was living to satisfy other people's goals for her and feeling like she was never quite getting there despite achieving so many outward measures of success. She developed several addictive behaviours to help her numb and distract herself from her inner pain. But her healing process has enabled her to help many others. Listen to this episode with Zoe if you want to learn: About the difference between nurturing the inner self vs looking good on the outside How important it is for parents to develop their own emotional intelligence so that their children can do the same and how important it is for us to ‘re-parent' ourselves The signs of perfectionism –the seeking of qualifications and prestige jobs, trying to get everyone to love you, or maybe striving to look immaculate, saying ‘yes, but….' about your achievements and procrastinating or not finishing projects because they'll never be good enough How perfectionism is different from doing your best How perfectionism can suck the joy out of parenting and lead to criticising your own child and passing on the perfectionism burden to that child When trusting your instincts as a parent what the difference is between defaulting to learned parenting behaviours and parenting from a place of awareness How having a strong inner critic gets in the way of building our children's sense of self-worth, resilience and joy How parental guilt is unreasonable as it focuses on the wrong things, the small things, the things we feel we ‘should' be doing, not on the things that are out of step with our values How to handle things when we (inevitably) get things wrong, including asking our children if there's anything we can do to make amends, so that we can model our humanness and our imperfection, because if we beat ourselves up we are saying I only love myself when I get things right and they can accept their own imperfection How to avoid putting on the mask of perfectionism to hide not being good enough To be willing to show our messiness so that our children can accept their own feelings and the complexity of the world How to hold your own feelings and accept your child's feelings rather than distract your child from them How to build your self-awareness, which plays such an important role in understanding yourself and in quietening your inner critic What role meditation plays in understanding that we are not our thoughts In our celebration of vulnerability and perfect imperfection Zoe shares with us a Low Parenting Moment of her own. Some of you will recognise this moment and may feel that Zoe handled it perfectly well actually. And she also shares her top tip for raising children to be confident, happy and successful.  It's a really lovely one.   Links To get in touch with Zoe: Website:https://www.motherkind.co/ Podcast: https://www.motherkind.co/podcast-1 Blog: https://www.motherkind.co/blog Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/motherkind_zoe/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Motherkind.co/ Twitter: @motherkind
