Hi mamas. In this episode of Life After Birth, I am joined by Ali Heppell, a postpartum doula, matrescence educator and guide, and women's circle facilitator. She is also a wife and mum to two boys. In this conversion, we discuss Ali's experience of becoming a mother after losing her own mother to cancer just a few years prior. We discuss Ali's experience of the grief of losing her mother, her honouring of this grief and how it shaped her own mothering journey. Ali shares her immense loss and longing for her mother, and her journey of going inwards and seeking solace and comfort in parenting herself.  We also discuss: Grief, how it changes and evolves over time, and the power of self-compassion, mindfulness and sharing, to connect to the shared common humanity of the experience.  The ‘unravelling' and the ‘becoming' of matrescence, and how motherhood can so often catalyse a huge journey of growth, a shifting of priorities and a change of identities, and the parallels of this with grief. The seasons of matraescence, and the power of knowing in the darker and more challenging times, that things are everchanging and it won't always feel this hard.   The power of self-compassion in motherhood; mothering yourself, being kind to yourself, and gently nudging your inner voice in a kinder and more compassionate direction. This is a beautiful, vulnerable and raw conversation, and I hope it brings comfort and strength to you mamas. Here is where you can find out more about me (Yara), how to work with me and some resources: Why Am I So Angry Workshop*** Waitlist for The Rebirth, Group Coaching for Mamas ***This is my signature 3 months online group coaching container for mothers which covers family of origin, inner child work, nervous system basics, anger, boundaries and much more. @lifeafterbirthpsychology  www.lifeafterbirth.com.auFree Inner Critic WorkbookFree Values Aligned Living Workbook  Find out more about Alison and access her resources in these places: https://aliheppell.com/Ali on Instagram

Hi mamas. In this episode of Life After Birth, I am joined by Kelly Wright who has recently joined me at Life After Birth in a therapist capacity. Kelly is a mother and therapist trained in social work, attachment theory, nutrition, internal family systems, polyvagal work, and I'm so happy to have her on the team.  In this raw and vulnerable conversation, Kelly shares some of the challenges she has experienced in her mothering journey, and the disparity between what she expected to come with motherhood and the reality of her lived experience.  We talk about the dark and messy places she has traversed to find her strength and inner knowing as a mother, and the anger and grief that comes with raising a child who experiences the world in more challenging ways. We also touch on the often-complex decision of whether or not to expand your family. Other parts of our conversation include:  Kelly's experience of anxiety, OCD and eating disorders during in her twenties, and how this affected her perception of her resilience and capacity to be a mother. Kelly's initial fear about being a mother and how this shifted over time.   The power in shifting your perspective to view what you might have seen as your weaknesses and vulnerabilities, to viewing them as signs of your resilience and strength. The need for mothers to be held, and the importance of seeking help when things are hard; that things don't need to be extreme to seek help, and that this support can come in many forms, such as therapy and women's circles.   And sooooooo much more. I hope you get as much comfort from this conversation as I did from having it.  *If you are an Australian resident and are looking for some support as you mother, Kelly has availability to support you now. Zoe invited me to be a guest on her podcast a few months ago, and so I was excited to return the invite and have her come on Life After Birth to share more of her story and insights with you all.  In this conversation, Zoe shares with me about her own upbringing, and reflects on the ‘credits' and ‘debits' of her childhood and the role they played in her life and the forming of her core patterns. We discuss her transition into mothering, and explore what Zoe calls her perfectionist tendencies and her inner critic during her early years of mothering.  Zoe talks about the importance and power of self-compassion, re-parenting yourself, and nurturing a kinder inner voice, for your own wellbeing but also to pass this on as a ‘credit' to our own children. We also discuss: -       The story behind Zoe starting the Motherkind Podcast and platform. -       The shift that can come from parts work and in finding compassion for the parts within. -       The importance of decision-making, implementing boundaries and living a life of alignment and authenticity.    You can listen to the Motherkind podcast episode I was on at the link below:Listen to the podcast Here is where you can find out more about me (Yara), how to work with me and some resources:Why Am I So Angry Workshop*** Waitlist for The Rebirth, Group Coaching for Mamas *** This is my signature 3 months online group coaching container for mothers which covers family of origin, inner child work, nervous system basics, anger, boundaries and much more. @lifeafterbirthpsychology  www.lifeafterbirth.com.auFree Inner Critic WorkbookFree Values Aligned Living Workbook  Find out more about Zoe and access her resources in these places:https://www.motherkind.co/Zoe on Instagram

After childbirth, a mother's own life can start to feel lost in the busy days and nights of caring for a baby In the whirlwind of postpartum realities, Diane Speier peels back the curtain to reveal the less-explored, often turbulent aspects of motherhood. Brace yourselves for an unfiltered journey through the chaos, challenges, and heart-wrenching moments that lurk in the shadows of the seemingly idyllic post-birth experience. The harsh reality is that amidst the joyous coos and tender moments lie the echoes of a new mom's fading individuality. As all attention pivots toward the baby, the once vibrant tapestry of her life subtly starts to lose its hues. It's a silent transformation that often leaves mothers grappling with a sense of identity lost in the whirlwind of diapers, sleepless nights, and endless baby coos. Diane doesn't shy away from confronting these complex emotions, and in doing so, she sheds light on the unspoken vulnerabilities that mothers face in the aftermath of childbirth. But this exploration isn't just about highlighting the struggles; it's about acknowledging them, understanding them, and finding strength in the face of adversity. Diane fearlessly tackles the darker corners of motherhood, inviting listeners to confront the raw and unvarnished truths that often get overshadowed by the glow of new life. So, buckle up for a candid exploration that goes beyond the surface and challenges conventional narratives. Through Diane's insights, the audience is invited not just to witness the complexities of motherhood but to engage in a conversation that embraces the entirety of the postpartum spectrum—a spectrum that's as diverse, intricate, and nuanced as the women who embark on this transformative journey. Hey there mamas and welcome back to another episode of Life After Birth. In this episode, I'm speaking to Minna Dubin, the Author of ‘Mom Rage: The Everyday Crisis of Modern Motherhood.' I absolutely loved this book and was so excited to invite Minna to speak with me for this episode. Minna's writing has been featured in The New York Times, The Times, Salon, Parents, Romper, Oprah Daily, MUTHA Magazine and many other publications. As a leading feminist voice on mom rage, Minna has also appeared on MSNBC, Good Morning America, The Tamron Hall Show, NBC10 Boston and NPR. Minna is from California and lives with her husband and two children. In this conversation, we talked about Minna's experience of becoming a mother and what her difficulties were during this time. We talk about rage in motherhood, exploring the social elements that play a role in this and the power of treating your anger with compassion.  We also discussed: ·      The intensity that can come with difficult seasons of motherhood and the importance in having faith and self-belief that you can and will make it through these challenging times. We also discuss the power of drawing on previous experiences of when you have overcome challenging times to help foster this belief. ·      The need for time, space and separateness in mothering and how this is often perceived negatively in our society due to patriarchal internalised modelling that has led to the belief that a ‘good' mother wants to be around her children and husband all the time and who doesn't have needs of her own.·      Minna's identity as being a bisexual Queer woman married to a cis-man, how becoming a mother intensified this experience and how she used writing to help process her second ‘coming out' experience once she was a mother, and the part this played in her returning to herself.  -       The internalised belief of the “good mother - good child” association that is held in many facets of our society, and how this can manifest in relation to neurodiversity and behavioural differences in children. And much more. I hope you feel seen and heard by listening to this conversation, and enjoy it as much as I did.  Here is where you can find out more about me (Yara), how to work with me and some resources:Why Am I So Angry Workshop*** Waitlist for The Rebirth, Group Coaching for Mamas *** This is my signature 3 months online group coaching container for mothers which covers family of origin, inner child work, nervous system basics, anger, boundaries and much more. @lifeafterbirthpsychology  www.lifeafterbirth.com.auFree Inner Critic WorkbookFree Values Aligned Living Workbook  Find out more about Minna in these places:www.minnadubin.comMinna on Instagram Minna on TwitterYou can purchase Minna's book “Mom Rage: The Everyday Crisis Of Modern Motherhood” here – it's an incredible, comprehensive and detailed exploration on the rage felt my mothers, and I hugely recommend giving it a read!

Hi mama. In this episode of Life After Birth, I'm joined by Veronica Eyo, a maternal mental health therapist who helps mothers as they navigate their motherhood journey, as well as managing symptoms of perinatal mental health. In this conversation, we discuss Veronica's experience of becoming a mother, and how her reality differed from her pre-motherhood expectation of what it would be like, particularly in the wake of experiencing a difficult birth, which resulted in her entering motherhood carrying feelings of failure. We explore the problematic belief that women are intrinsically natural mothers, and the importance of instead seeing it as a skill to be learned and honed as you go, developing through observation, practice, and trial and error. We also discussed:·      The importance of learning to embrace rest in motherhood and the challenges so many of us face in this, especially those with a background of marginalisation where rest simply isn't in the makeup of our ancestors and was not always available for them.  ·      The importance of embracing the current season of motherhood you are in, and the challenge of having to stay flexible with your values when it comes to motherhood. ·      Honouring past versions of yourself as well as truly valuing the new behaviours, activities and beliefs that come with the act of mothering, in this new season of your life.  ·      The challenges of parenting in a way that honours the spirit of your children and how effortful this can be, especially for those who haven't had experience of this themselves, as there is no blueprint to follow. I absolutely loved speaking to Veronica and I hope you enjoy listening to our conversation too. @lifeafterbirthpsychology  www.lifeafterbirth.com.auFree Inner Critic WorkbookFree Values Aligned Living Workbook  Find out more about Veronica in these places:https://www.drveronicalcsw.com/Veronica on InstagramVeronica on TikTok

Today I'm speaking with Yara Heary from Life after Birth Psychology. Yara is a Perth Psychologist who works exclusively with women throughout conception, pregnancy & motherhood. Yara started Life After Birth Psychology following the birth of her first son, which started her on yet another journey of self-discovery. Her experiences throughout early motherhood sparked her passion to support other women as they navigate their own family-of-origin dynamics - the social programming of the good mother, relationship changes with those around them, identity shifts and role changes to find their place of balance and authenticity as mothers. Yara offers 1:1 and group coaching programs for mothers, including her group program 'The Re-Birth', alongside e-courses and workshops and her own podcast 'Life After Birth with Yara'. In today's episode, I speak with Yara about how mothering can be a time of re-experiencing and, in many ways, grieving our own experiences of childhood and how this can be both painful and an opportunity for growth and healing. We talk about exploring our triggers, reparenting ourselves and nurturing our own inner child. From Her Website:  "I became a certified childbirth educator in 1978 and offered birth preparation courses and taught classes in fitness to pregnant and postpartum women for 20 years. In November 2013, I released the first version of a postnatal app called Digital Doula®. It was the first of its kind, and a rare information resource for postpartum women and their families. Digital Doula®2.0 was released in 2020 as a completely upgraded app that is available in both iOS and Android versions. In 2019, I published the book Life After Birth: A Parent's Holistic Guide for Thriving in the Fourth Trimester (Praeclarus Press). Digital Doula®2.0 is the companion to the book, and the sections of the app match the sections of the book and add a couple. And as new information and research becomes available, it will be added to the app to positively supplement the content of the book. Nowadays, I've extracted the decades of work I've done as a birth professional into two important workshops for expectant and new parents. One is a way of avoiding birth trauma (Avoiding Birth Trauma: The Missing Link in Birth Preparation), and the other is a prenatal preparation for the postpartum period so you can thrive in the fourth trimester (Postpartum W.E.L.L.N.E.S.S.: Making the Most of Life After Birth). Once you've taken traditional birth preparation, you don't want to miss these additional empowering workshops. In 2022, I created an online course called 8 Keys for Thriving in the Fourth Trimester, which prepares prospective and new parents for what happens after the baby is born. The 8 modules cover the range of experiences that most parents are unaware will have a profound impact on their relationship and their lives as they make the transition to parenthood. Being prepared for the postpartum period is something that is even more important than preparation for childbirth. As an online course, this is something that parents can dip into as and when they are able." dianespeier.com

I also started attending births as doula in 1978 and have been an enlightened and experienced guide for facilitating birth for my doula clients.

It's common for moms to feel a little "off" after giving birth—the hormonal changes can cause something called the "baby blues," where mom is a little sadder than usual. But another possibility is postpartum depression, which interrupts the mom's mood for an extended period of time, making it hard to get out of bed or care for herself and her newborn. How can she start to feel better without self-medicating? Host William C. Moyers invited Chief Medical Officer Alta DeRoo, MD, to weigh in.

"Why are you wasting time?""I would start planning to have a family now if I were you""Motherhood is the best thing on this planet""Wait until you're a mother! It's the best thing that will ever happen to you"Any of these sound familiar? The patriarchal system that we live in sends us constant reminders that as women, our time is ticking and we need to procreate ASAP - whether we are ready, or not. The over-glamourizing of pregnancy and motherhood in general inadequately equips mothers-to-be about the realities of what experiencing what my next guest today will talk about in more detail:  post partum/ post natal  depression. The focus  in society is very much on bringing another human into this world however, the emotional turmoil that a mother can go through during pregnancy as well as during and post childbirth is frequently minimised and at times, over looked entirely. A whole cocktail of scenarios could take place which can completely do a 180 on the mother's mental health and wellbeing. As our guest today explains, the negative feelings that new mothers experience can bring about a crippling shame due to the toxic stereotype that the birth of a child is such a huge milestone that any emotion that doesn't fall in the realm of ecstatic happiness is  often labelled as incorrect. This leaves many mothers feeling like they are unable to be honest with others about how they really feel - the reality of being both in love with having a new child and simultaneously feeling an overwhelming wave of depression still appears to lead society to make erroneous assumptions about the mother concerned. The mother in turn feels invalidated and forced to continue the façade of toxic positivity to fit the mould and not stand out as ungrateful, incapable, regretful or any combination of these three. Today we have with us Molly Nourmand, LMFT who is a licensed psychotherapist, yogini, and mother. Her multi-layered lens brings healing, integration, and transformation to the lives of women through both 1:1 and group therapy. Her approach is grounded in Psychodynamic Theory, and informed by over a decade of teaching yoga and meditation, as well as an ongoing exploration of Somatic Experiencing and Conscious Parenting. She received a Master of Arts degree in Counselling Psychology with an emphasis in Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute. Due to her own experience with depression after becoming a mother,  she felt called to create Life After Birth® in 2017: a postpartum support circle to hold women through their initiation into motherhood. It's safe to say that many of us go into motherhood with a plan. Heck, we go into labor with a plan. And it's also safe to say that almost none of it ever goes the way we want it to. Many of us envision a birth that isn't anything like the one we actually experience. And many of us think we're going to be one way as a mother, and then get a rude awakening once our child is in our arms and we are faced with all the realities of motherhood: the emotions, the shifting hormones, the changed identity, the feelings that flood through us at breakneck speed. Molly Nourmand is a licensed psychotherapist, yogini, and mother. She has a practice called Life After Birth that focuses on postpartum support for mothers. In her group is the opportunity to process birth trauma, to discuss any possible PMADS (perinatal mood and anxiety disorders), and so much more, much of which we discuss today. Today's show is for anyone currently pregnant or in their first few years postpartum, though it may be good for anyone who hasn't yet processed their birth stories, no matter how old your children are. For full show notes, visit www.themomfeed.com

In previous episodes, we talk about abortion, presenting two significant premises, firstly, that life begins at birth, and the very act of abortion is the killing of an innocuous child. Secondly, the woman has the right to her body. Therefore she can decide to obliterate the unborn. We also saw arguments that killing the child prevents the child from living an impoverished life when the mother isn't financially stable. To corroborate the pro-choice arguments, we discussed the premises about the mothers' mental health during pregnancy and in the case of rape. However, the pro-life argument remains the same "abortion is tantamount to first-degree murder." many on the opposing side still believe that the pro-life debate starts at conception and ends at birth, but that is untrue. In this episode, we will speak on the pro-life argument: life after birth. join us in this open discussion; let's agree to disagree --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/a2d-talk-show/support

About this Episode: Imagine being a 12-year-old girl, having your first ever period and, instead of your parent handing you a bulky pad or trying to explain how to use a tampon, they give you a pair of leakproof underwear that look exactly like your normal underwear and hold as much liquid as EIGHT regular tampons. It would have changed the entire experience. The focus of the conversation would be about your changing body, rather than the confusion of having to 'manage' it! The fact that a product like this will exist for my daughter, Olive, when her time comes, is literally a dream come true for me and I have today's podcast guest to thank for disrupting the intimates market and producing products that are redefining the whole experience, period. Today on the pod, we welcome Joanna Griffiths, founder of Knix and Knixteen. I am a total Knix-evangelist, so I was very honoured to interview Joanna about how she created a company that's innovative, high-quality, inclusive (in sizing and in marketing campaigns) as well as being eco friendly! As a consumer, I feel really good about supporting this company- I trust their ethos and their products. On today episode, we discuss: Joanna's 'why' for creating KnixLeakproof underwear and SUPER leakproof underwearCampaigns that connect (Life After Birth, International Women's Day, Knixteen) Navigating COVID and becoming a temporary Zoom CEO Toddler motherhood I'm grateful for what Joanna and her team have created and I am so excited for you to hear her stories and perspectives.About Joanna Griffiths: Joanna Griffiths is the Founder and CEO of Knix and Knixteen the direct-to-consumer intimate apparel brands that are reinventing intimates for real life.
