On today's episode, American jazz fusion guitarist and singer-songwriter George Benson drops by to discuss what gave the Beatles “prestige” and how the band helped Black musicians succeed. Benson recorded his first album The New Boss Guitar, at 21, and followed it up with It's Uptown with the George Benson Quartet. In 1969, he recorded his homage to the Beatles' album Abbey Road, entitled The Other Side of Abbey Road. Things really took off for Benson in the mid-1970s, beginning with the LP Bad Benson, which topped the Billboard jazz charts in 1974. Benson scored a triple-platinum hit with his 1976 album Breezin', and in 1978, he earned a Grammy award for his live rendition of “On Broadway.” In 1980, Benson took the pop charts by storm with his studio album Give Me the Night. Produced by Quincy Jones, the LP yielded several hit singles including the upbeat, jazz-infused title track.  Benson's latest LP Dreams Do Come True features orchestrations that had been lost for 35 years, and were recently unearthed from his archive. He's collaborated with luminaries like violinist Stéphane Grappelli, guitar great John Williams, and Andy Summers from The Police, and released eight solo albums prior to teaming up with former members of Soft Machine for another six albums. We discuss "One Glove" by Soft Machine from Hidden Details (2018), his rendition of Rodgers and Hart's "My Romance" from I Didn't Know (2004), and "Venerable Bede" from Ash (1994). Arteta comienza sus estudios de Jazz en el Conservatorio Superior de Música Pablo Sarasate de Pamplona, después reside en Ámsterdam, donde estudia ‘Saxophone Jazz Bachelor' en el Conservatorium Van Ámsterdam, recibiendo clases de Dick Oatts, Gerald Clayton o Dave Douglas entre muchos otros, obteniendo el reconocimiento al mejor instrumentista de su promoción. Colabora también en diferentes proyectos musicales como: The Broken Brothers Brass Band, Pirineos Jazz Orchestra, Kike Arza Quintet, Anaut, Baca Quartet, Talka Ensemble, Ulrich Calvo Group, Max Canalda Quartet, etc… incluyendo la grabación de varios discos con algunas de estas agrupaciones. Es un músico curtido por los escenarios de numerosos festivales y clubes y que ya había publicado su primer disco ‘Bat' en el 2014. Un buen disco que dejaba el listón alto. En este •The Legacy' Alberto Arteta sigue la línea de su anterior trabajo y nos demuestra su evolución con un repertorio formado casi exclusivamente por composiciones propias, tan solo hay sitio para una versión al final de la grabación, ‘My Romance' de Richard Rodgers que cierra el disco. La musica, jazz contemporáneo, ortodoxo y con feeling, sobre todo en los blues y tempos lentos que siempre ha bordado. Es un jazz personal bien compuesto y organizado que rezuma calidad. El grupo de altura, aparte de Arteta al saxo tenor, Sacha Soriazu esta al piano, Luís Jiménez se ocupa de la guitarra, muy presente a lo largo del disco, y la sólida base rítmica la formas Kike Arza en el contrabajo y Juanma Urriza a la batería. El disco propone temas largos como ‘Zuri Beltz', el bello ‘Dezagun Gutxi Dezagun Beti', el más rítmico ‘The Legacy', el tranquilo ‘Azken Aurreko Aitorpena' o el tiempo de marcha de ‘1512' año en que Navarra perdió su independencia. Más profundo e introspectivo es ‘P.C. Jauna', mi tema favorito. Intercalados como pequeños ejercicios improvisatorios temas que duran escasos segundos y que buscan la sorpresa en un disco que gusta de los ambientes y atmósferas relajados. Estamos ante un trabajo muy personal y valido, con alma, que se puede y debe disfrutar a gusto. I. Ortega

El saxofonista Alberto Arteta presenta su nueva grabación, The Legacy (Errabal, 2016), en la jornada final de la primera edición del festival Jazz Zubipean, que ha comenzado su andadura en 2016 en Puente la Reina – Gares (Navarra). El concierto, con entrada libre, tendrá lugar el domingo 28 de agosto de 2016 a las 20:00, al aire libre, a la sombra del majestuoso Puente Románico de esta localidad. Al compositor y saxofonista le acompañarán en directo Luis Giménez (guitarra), Satxa Soriazu (piano), Kike Arza (contrabajo) y Juanma Urriza (batería). En HDO escuchamos nuevamente (Alberto Arteta ya pasó por el podcast presentándonos su grabación), parte de la música de The Legacy. En concreto suenan “Zuri Beltz” (abriendo el podcast), y tras la presentación los temas “The Legacy”, el clásico “My Romance”, y “P.C. Jauna”. PROG.Nº 447.-Comenzamos con el estándar de la semana escuchando el tema “Lester Leaps In” con Quincy Jones, y esta semana Jazz en el Recuerdo Aniversario.- Vamos a celebrar aniversario con BEN WEBSTER, (BEN AND SWEETS), y aniversario de la muerte de Zoot Sims - If I'm Lucky. JAZZ ACTUALIDAD.- Esta semana tendremos a DIANA PALAU & JOEL MORENO con su albúm “PLAY” Ben Webster, fue un músico excepcional. Formado en sus inicios en la orquesta de Duke Ellington, inició con el declive de las big bands su carrera en solitario y como líder consiguió no sólo el reconocimiento de la critica y de los aficionados al jazz sino que sus discos se convirtieron en objeto de culto para sus seguidores consiguiendo verdaderas obras maestras. En "Ben and Sweets", el resultado es un disco redondo con un tema especialmente magistral: La balada "My Romance". El sonido aterciopelado del saxo, el mullido de las notas balanceándose sobre el compás del piano consiguen una musicalidad y un swing absoluto. Este extraordinario álbum recoge el maravilloso momento de su encuentro con el pianista Jimmy Rowles, un álbum extraordinario y que marcó para siempre toda su carrera y por el que fue reconocido como uno de los grandes del saxo tenor. Un disco cálido, lleno de swing, en plena madurez creativa y con un fabuloso dominio del instrumento en todos los tiempos. Esplendido JAZZ ACTUALIDAD.- Esta semana tendremos DIANA PALAU & JOEL MORENO con su albúm “PLAY” Play' aparte de la connotación de tocar que tienen en su idioma original posee el significado de jugar que se pierde en el idioma de Cervantes. Diana Palau y el guitarrista Joel Moreno Codinachs parecen no querer prescindir de ese lúdico sentido en este ‘Play' con que se estrenan en el sello Errabal. La colaboración entre Diana Palau y el Joel Moreno Project nace en el 2011, desde entonces, intercalando la experiencia con otros proyectos personales, han venido madurando las ideas hasta exponerlas en este ‘Play'. Estamos ante un proyecto donde la improvisación, sobre interesantes composiciones originales y temas variados que forman parte del acervo musical de Diana y Joel, se plantea como un juego y, desde luego, tiene un papel central. Diana y Joel empezaron tocando a dúo (voz y guitarra) canciones de jazz, pop, samba y también temas originales. En el 2012 sacan un disco con temas a dúo llamado ‘Songs & Cançoes' y ahora con el Project amplían el concepto inicial y se ven rodeados por un cuarteto básico al que se añaden según las necesidades colaboradores de todo tipo. Utilizando estos musicos como base se atreven a dejar volar su imaginación y con grandes dosis de improvisación y libertad van llevando su música a lugares diferentes con acierto y calidad. Los musicos que acompañan a Diana y Joel en esta aventura son Paco Weht al contrabajo, Alejandro Di Costanzo al piano en un par de temas y Guillem Arnedo a la batería. Los colaboradores son Bernat Hernández al bajo electrico en ‘Nem O Sol, Nem O Lua, Nem Eu' del brasileño Lenine, Jordi Santanach al clarinete bajo en ‘Chovendo Na Roseira' de Jobim y al saxo tenor en la de Lenine, Oroitz Maiz se ocupa del acordeón en ‘Tu Respiración' original de Diana, Jordi Oriol rapea poéticamente en ‘No Moon' tema que firma al unísono con Joel y Acari Bertrán pone percusiones al tema de Lenine y a un tranquilo ‘Something' de George Harrison. Otras versiones que aparecen en la grabación son el ‘Embracable You' de los Gershwin, ‘I Dindn´t Know What Time It Was' de Rodgers y Hart, el bello ‘Down From Antigua' de Jim Hall y como final un ‘folkie' ‘Bring On The Nigth' de Sting. Más variedad casi imposible. En ‘Play' hay un poco de todo, como en botica, y todo proviene de las experiencias obtenidas por estos dos caminantes a lo largo de su ruta musical. Ya en la portada te puede quedar claras las intenciones del proyecto. Un alegre pic-nic campestre te da la bienvenida a esta reunión de canciones ‘jugadas' con alegría y sencillez por Diana y Joel.
