It's part 2 of our dive into the Insect Apocalypse, with our good friend Dr. Jason Dombroskie from the Cornell University Insect Collection!In this part, Jason fills us in on the drivers of the Insect Apocalypse and - most importantly - what we can do about it.This episode was recorded on August 21, 2025 at Rattlesnake Hill Wildlife Management Area in Dalton, NY.. Episode NotesDuring the episode, we made the claim that 40 million acres of the US is lawn, and that that area is equal to all of the country's National Parks put together. True? Well, sort of. The claim that the U.S. has about 40 million acres of lawn—roughly equal to all our national parks combined—is only partly true. A NASA-funded study led by Cristina Milesi estimated that turfgrass covers about 128,000 km² (≈31 million acres) of the continental U.S., making it the largest irrigated “crop” in the country (Milesi et al., Environmental Management, 2005; NASA Earth Observatory). Later analyses and popular summaries often round that up to ≈40 million acres (e.g., Scienceline, 2011; LawnStarter, 2023). By comparison, the total land area of all officially designated U.S. National Parks is about 52.4 million acres, while the entire National Park System—which also includes monuments, preserves, and historic sites—covers about 85 million acres (National Park Service, 2024). So while lawns and parks occupy areas of similar magnitude, lawns do not actually equal or exceed the combined area of the national parks. Is it better to mulch leaves on your lawn or leave them be? Here's what we found: It's generally best to mulch your leaves with a mower rather than rake or remove them. Research from Michigan State University found that mowing leaves into small pieces allows them to decompose quickly, returning nutrients to the soil and reducing weeds like dandelions and crabgrass (MSU Extension, “Don't rake leaves — mulch them into your lawn”, 2012). Cornell University studies similarly show that mulched leaves improve soil structure, moisture retention, and microbial activity (Cornell Cooperative Extension, “Leaf Mulching: A Sustainable Alternative”, 2019). However, in garden beds, wooded edges, or under shrubs, it's often better to leave leaves whole, since they provide winter habitat for butterflies, bees, and other invertebrates that overwinter in leaf litter (National Wildlife Federation, “Leave the Leaves for Wildlife”, 2020). The ideal approach is a mix: mow-mulch leaves on grassy areas for turf health and leave them intact where they naturally fall to support biodiversity and soil ecology. Albers graduated from Marymount University in Arlington, VA, with a BA in Interior Design and immediately began working in the Washington metro area's commercial and corporate design segment. In 2017, Jill moved to her family's home state of Maine so she could start working for Interface. In 2019, she was awarded the Ray C Anderson Sustainability Award, an honor given by the Ray C. Anderson Foundation to a member of the Interface sales team who actively demonstrates their commitment to Interface's Mission Zero and Climate Take Back mission in their career and personal lives. In 2023, she was asked to join the Global Sustainability Council for Interface, an internal group from all facets of the Interface business. She was tasked with inspiring and influencing the company's sustainability path forward. After an amazing season full of talking about teams across college squash, this episode is all about our guy Gilly and his boys hoisting the Potter Cup for the first time in school history, and what better way to do it than live, in person, at the Arlen Specter US Squash Center in the heart of Philadelphia, PA, the site of Penn's National Title win less than a week prior. Gilly tells Jackson how it feels to finally win a National Championship for the school he played for almost 2 decades ago and what it means for the Penn Squash program before the gents welcome on Penn team captain Roger Alber Baddour to recount the team's trials and tribulations throughout the year and how they were able to avenge their 2 regular season losses, to Princeton and Trinity, in the National semifinals and finals. It was so cool to record live from the Specter Center during last week's CSA Individual Championships. Live from the Heart of America—I'm Steve Gruber—ready to fight for you from the Foxhole of Freedom—giving you better analysis and insight that anyone else—shining a spotlight on the cockroaches of the swamp—and delivering truth and justice just when hope was starting to fade—   Here are the 3 Big Things you need to know to start today—   Number One— With China's military growing—it's posture getting more aggressive and its aspirations becoming more clear by the day—what is Joe Biden's policy—it seems to be as clear as mud—   Number Two— FBI Director Christopher Wray appears to have buried another monstrous Biden scandal prior to the 2020 election—and it looks like he may pay a high price for his tricks—   Number Three—I have been on vacation for just over a week and had plenty of time to reflect on the state of things in America today—though I actually tried to disconnect for most of my time away—as Ivey will tell you it is very difficult for me—I have been this way since long before the hand held self-hypnotizing smart phone in my hand—I became enamored with current events while I was in elementary school—   Growing up—my dad had us in front of Walter Cronkite every single night—during dinner—or right afterwards—   I remember watching the reports from Vietnam and the spreading Watergate scandal—and every night the update on those killed or missing in southeast Asia—I have been paying attention ever since—   Now of course it's much easier with the spread of devices and social media—however the quality of the information seems to have declined dramatically since that time of my childhood—   So while I was away—I watched as Republicans celebrated their false win on a debt ceiling deal—that far more Democrats than Republicans voted for—that will add another $4 Trillion to the already staggering—and potentially fatal $31.5 Trillion in debt we are already carrying—plus—on January 2nd 2025—the debt ceiling will be raised again automatically—   Where is the win in that?   I see the border is still open and thousands are pouring in every day—as so-called charities enrich themselves at the expense of the taxpayers, your kids and grandkids and the future of this country—   I also read a fascinating and vetted account of a retired judge who wrote a letter a few years ago—trying to figure out what the hell we are doing as a nation—   The letter has even been authenticated by the far-leftist Snopes—who actually called the judge—who said yes he had written it—   So, in case you have not been enlightened by the now deceased judge—I want to share it with you— This letter was published in a California paper in December of 2021—   Opinion From a Former Judge   I am a student of law whose age is 85. MY first year of college was 68 years ago. One class I took was political science. A half page of my textbook essentially outlined a few steps to overturn a Democracy.   Here is the list he gave—   1) Divide the nation philosophically.  2) Foment racial strife.  3) Cause distrust of police authority.  4) Swarm the nation's borders indiscriminately and unconstitutionally.  5) Engender the military strength to weaken it.  6) Overburden citizens with more unfair taxation.  7) Encourage civil rioting and discourage accountability for all crime.  8) Control all balloting.  9) Control all media."   He concluded his letter to the editor this way:   What was printed in 1954 as a possible diabolic nightmare has become an emerging reality. I hope that Americans will unite enough to pen a good finish- God willing.   Keith M. Alber   As I read the headlines far from the shores of America—and compared it to the list judge Alber penned less than 2 years ago—you have to ask—why are millions of people oblivious to what is so obvious to any honest person?   The judge did miss just a couple of things that have also been turned into weapons—but he didn't miss much—   First, he failed to mention, censoring and silencing anyone who didn't adhere to some orthodox position on a political spectrum—he didn't forsee the social network enabled by the rise of the machines—buy then again—how could he—   Judge Alber also failed to identify the dangers of weaponizing the FBI and DOJ to target and destroy the political opponents of those in charge of the West Wing—of course that has happened in America for decades—BUT not to the degree that was first unleashed with Barack Obama in the White House—that was then used to diminish and handicap his successor and now—is trying to prop up a guy who can barely walk on any given day—   I mean Joe Biden should never have kept saying—‘Watch me'—because Joe we have been—and honestly Pal—it has not been pretty—   Any honest person knows Joe Biden is not in charge of anything inside the beltway—and those that are—are absolutely ruthless—I am sure at some point I too will be silenced… one way or the other—maybe I will face the final solution at the hands of the American government—a couple of years ago that would have seemed far-fetched—BUT it draws closer by the day—   The Uni-party celebrates raising our national debt by Trillions of dollars while funding a proxy war in Europe and kneeling at the feet of the Chinese Communist Party—   Sure, there are some exceptions like Rand Paul, Jim Jordan, Matt Rosendale and of course Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis—BUT again when more Democrats than Republicans in both houses vote for—what did they call it—the fiscal responsibility something or other—and Republicans are patting themselves on the back for a huge win—then there is something very very wrong with all of it—   These people are not looking out for the folks—and honestly— You have to ask—who exactly are they looking out for? It seems to me they are not looking out for you or for me. And honestly with the scandals in Washington—more specifically the Democrat scandals in Washington being buried by the media and the intelligence communities at every turn—do we still stand a chance?   The good news is yes—because of courageous whistleblowers and a media that appears to have gotten permission to write non-flattering stories about joe Biden—his incompetence and the incompetence of his Administration—
