EPISODE 184: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:42) SPECIAL COMMENT: Fani Willis has a batch of texts from the Georgia Voting Machine Access scandal so powerful she could indict at least two Trump minions now - probably Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell right now - and maybe Trump himself because he knew about the plan as Giuliani pitched it a month earlier in the Oval Office as Trump listened. The good news/bad news is that nothing is touching Trump's popularity among Republican primary voters: 46% back him outright; 66% have him as their first or second choice. How could that be good news? DeSantis is NOT a successor. There is no successor. This could all die with him. The only cloud on the horizon? Dianne Feinstein. Not only can't Dick Durbin subpoena Clarence Thomas or John Roberts but when he was to humiliate himself by inviting Roberts to a hearing, Roberts doesn't even reply to his letter - he has a flunky do it for him. All this because Feinstein isn't there and rumored to be REALLY not there. The solution is simple: write up her resignation, forge her signature, and if she's lucid, she can protest and stop it. This isn't a game. For much of the Senate day Democrats do not have a majority because they're treating her like a beloved teacher fading out from a prep school somewhere. This. Is. Metaphorical. War. B-Block (19:47) WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: A nice racism tie between basketball's Phil Jackson and NC Lt. Governor Mark Robinson (who wants his fellow African-Americans to PAY reparations), Senator Hawley and his tiny manhood, and of course Elon Musk, who over the subject of checkmarks just Blue himself. (25:10) BREAKING NEWS: NBC fires my lying ex-friend Jeff Shell as CEO - for lying. Deadline.Com reports he had an affair with a CNBC Correspondent, Hadley Gamble - the woman Russian state TV once accused of trying to distract Vladimir Putin with her "sex appeal" - and compared her to Sharon Stone CROSSING HER LEGS IN BASIC INSTINCT. I'm so full of Schadenfreude I actually sing "The Ode To Joy" in the original German. C-Block (34:30) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Tobias in California. (35:30) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: If the Shell news isn't fun enough, CNN and Chris Licht make his biggest mistake yet. There are nine laws of cable TV news and the new Gayle King/Charles Barkley show will violate ALL NINE OF THEM.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today on SYCK, I'm interviewing long-time Googler, Fabian Elliott, who has ten years of tech experience and who has leveraged data to further social justice education and change through his company Black Tech Mecca. He is opening up about his wild ride at Google, his entrepreneurial mindset and learning the balance of work and family. Fabian speaks about his experience with  diversity at Google and his role in revitalizing Google's black employee group. He also speaks to the difficulties and rewards in leading social equity conversations at the height of racial tensions in 2020. Fabian and I talk about the actions we can take to increase diversity in our own companies and how to grow your professional network in both quantity and quality.   IN THIS EPISODE: [04:34] Fabian's entrepreneurial and professional background [11:20] Alternative career interests [25:19] Diversity at Google and creating Black Tech Mecca [33:58] Google's response to racial issues and Fabian's experience  [39:13] What actions can individuals take to increase diversity in their circles and companies [45:00] How to grow your network in quality and quantity [52:00] Best career advice and book recommendations   KEY TAKEAWAYS:   Fabian created Black Tech Mecca out of a desire to use data for social change. It started as a company survey and expanded to include cities and communities as a way to use data to inform better programming and resources for underrepresented and underserved groups.  Companies need to be aware and provide support for their leaders who are working to make social and racial justice progress. It is extremely taxing and if there isn't adequate support from top leadership, it can lead to burnout.  Don't necessarily chase a particular title or role. Instead focus on what problems you're passionate about solving. Always maximize your options and don't limit your potential by your decision making.  RESOURCE LINKS syckpodcast.com   BIO: Fabian Elliott is the past President and Chief Executive Officer of Black Tech Mecca, Inc. and currently a Customer Experience Lead at Google Cloud Africa. Black Tech Mecca helps cities assess racial equity in the local tech sector and surface fresh insights that accelerate measurable growth. BTM developed a proprietary SMART BTE City Assessment Framework consisting of 39 key indicators and 120 metrics spanning K-12, Higher Education, Corporate, and Entrepreneurship pillars which has been deployed in three major cities funded by Google, NBC-Comcast, and the Knight Foundation. In his role at Google Cloud, Fabian helps bring the best of Google Cloud to their largest African customers on their Digital Transformation journeys. Prior to launching BTM, Fabian led the revamp, revitalization, and rebrand of Google's black employee group in which he completed his term as inaugural appointed Global Co-Chair back in 2015. In this role, Fabian co-chaired the 10-person leadership team responsible for the 700+ membership across the company and the 14 chapters spanning the globe including London, Dublin, and Sao Paulo. Fabian is recognized by Builtin Chicago as one of the Top 50 Tech Influencers to follow, 2016 Porsche Power 30 Under 30 in Technology, Chicago Defender 2017 Newsmaker Award – Technology, 2017 Black Enterprise Modern Man 100, and 2019 Museum of Science and Industry Black Creativity Innovator. President Joe Biden's Soviet nominee for Comptroller of the Currency, Saule Omarova, has some pretty radical (i.e. Communist) views on private banking, the Fed, oil and gas, and pretty much everything else. She's up for a confirmation vote, but you might not know that because the mainstream media is more interested in AOC's latest victim narrative and the 41-month long sentence for the Qanon Shaman, Jacob Chansley. Kenosha, WI, and the rest of the country still await a verdict in the Kyle Rittenhouse trial and violence is apparently already underway. Meanwhile, 'Electric Joe' Biden thinks the way to get his administration back on track is more electric charging stations and a taxpayer-funded investigation into why gas prices are surging. Our guest today, Dr. Sebastian Gorka, rips Attorney General Merrick Garland for weaponizing the Deep State against parents, then opines on Biden backing down on Taiwan after his Zoom call with Xi Jinping. Finally, our caller of the day, Scott in Michigan, wants to know why the media isn't celebrating Kamala Harris, the first female BIPOC Veep. Maybe she is a victim of cis-hetero Joe?

Ep145: [CASE STUDY] Navigating a Difficult Career Transition | with Sam Lavin

Optimize Yourself

Last year writer/director Sam Lavin came to me because she had never felt more scattered. Amidst unemployment and managing the pandemic she said to me: “I’m typically a very ambitious person, but I’m finding it hard to stay on projects and get things done. I’m not motivated because I don’t know what I should be doing.” As an award-winning DGA director, assistant director, and writer who has worked on film and television projects including Lucifer, The Mayor, and Criminal Minds, she came to me as a 2nd AD with hopes of transitioning to the directing chair. Like many hit with a generous dose of perspective when the pandemic hit, Sam realized she was stuck and didn’t want to be a 2nd AD anymore...but she had no idea what to do next - and that lack of certainty left her paralyzed. She was dreaming of making her next major career transition into becoming both a 1st AD on major tv shows as well as a writer & director (and she knew she was ready!), but she had no clear path or next steps to make her vision become her reality. This led to wasted days of scattered attention and feeling “busy” but not “productive.” After joining the Optimizer coaching & mentorship program, Sam was able to design a plan that led her to firmly landing in the 1st AD position on a major streaming show for Apple, and she’s now poised to finally become a director. In today’s conversation we talk about the practical steps she took to work through the mental barriers that were stopping her from being productive and moving her career forwards, how she has become a focus machine getting more done in a few months than she had accomplished in years, and most importantly how you can apply the same principles to build momentum in your own career and life. No matter the career transition you are hoping to make next, even if the rungs of the ladder you want to climb might be different than others, the path is almost universally the same for all of us. You first need clarity about your next steps so you don’t inadvertently waste years of effort climbing the wrong ladder. Then you need to develop and hone the skills necessary to do the job you want next. And thirdly you need to build the right network of people so you can leverage those skills and convince them you can do the job, even if you might not have the experience yet. Simple...but far from easy. Learn how Sam did it and how you can do it too. Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn: What brought Sam to the Optimizer community and her career leading up to now. Sam's daily routine before she became a student in the Focus Yourself program. How we helped settle Sam's scattered mind and anxiety about where her career was headed. The obstacles Sam encountered when trying to find focus and clarity in her life. The mindset change that helped Sam make the transition from 2nd AD to 1st AD. How the Focus Gym helped her finish her pilot that she hadn't been able to complete before. The piece of feedback she received that changed her mindset about becoming a director. How the cancellation of an AFI program she had applied for gave her confidence to network more. KEY TAKEAWAY:  Your beliefs about yourself have the power to transform your life. Networking saved Sam from doing unnecessary steps to transition her career to the next level. Sam breaks down the skills necessary to become a director and what you can and can't learn by being a 1st AD. What positions most commonly get to the director's chair from film and television crews. The goal every 1st AD has to keep in mind when on set. How the politics of being a woman as an AD has made it tricky to navigate her career. Understanding the difference between confidence and arrogance and how to apply it to your career. How applying logic to networking was the key to helping Sam shift her mindset to make it work for her. What is the magic formula for networking and how it relieves the anxiety of reaching out. Sam's advice to anyone who feels like she did a year ago before she started the program. Samantha wrote and directed the film, "In Memory of Me" which screened at over 40 festivals worldwide, winning awards including Panavision’s New Filmmaker Grant. She also created a television show called "Out of the Frying Pan" which was optioned by NBC/Comcast. Show Credits: This episode was edited by Curtis Fritsch, and the show notes were prepared by Debby Germino and published by Glen McNiel. This week it was reported that around a dozen Google employees quit over the company’s involvement in the project. The hosts discuss what one Apple blogger calls “one of the biggest design screwups in Apple history,” which has led to a class-action lawsuit. And they break down a major vulnerability in email encryption. Later, April and Will are joined by antitrust expert Gene Kimmelman. He’s the president and CEO of Public Knowledge, a nonprofit that focuses on tech policy research and advocacy. He formerly served as the Chief Counsel for the U.S. Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division under President Obama, during which time the NBC/Comcast merger was approved.
