Mary and Jerry discuss how military families can prepare for deployment and readjust when a spouse returns, drawing on Jerry's four Navy deployments and a demanding year of workups on the USS Enterprise. They emphasize getting paperwork and finances in order (will, power of attorney, SGLI, joint accounts, budgeting), having hard conversations about worst-case scenarios, and maintaining an emergency fund for inevitable breakdowns like appliances and cars. They share practical ways to stay connected, including videotaping a deployed parent reading children's books, numbering letters in the pre-internet era, and creating continuity through shared routines like reading the same book and praying together. They highlight the importance of community support, honest communication about roles and chores, getting counseling when needed, and recognizing the challenges of reintegration, especially when the returning spouse tries to take charge or feels disengaged. This week on Trailer Parked Theology, Josh and Kristi share a takeaway from a recent marriage retreat that challenged one of the most common images used to explain Christian marriage: the triangle. They explore how sacramental marriage is about far more than two individuals independently pursuing God.Together they unpack a richer vision of marriage as a living icon of Christ's love for the Church, where spouses become instruments of God's grace for one another and for the world. The conversation then shifts into 1 John 2:7-11, where John speaks of an "old" commandment that is somehow also "new." Josh and Kristi explore how Jesus fulfilled the commandment of love, transforming it from instruction into lived demonstration through His life, death, and resurrection.Episode HighlightsThe popular "marriage triangle" analogySacramental marriage as an icon of Christ and His ChurchHow spouses help lead one another to heavenThe difference between the "old" and "new" commandment in 1 JohnHow Jesus demonstrated perfect love rather than simply teaching itWhy growth often begins when God reveals our blind spotsLearning to receive correction with humility and gracePractical ways to see God's presence in everyday lifeScripture Discussed1 John 2:7-11 Support the show

Mary and Jerry answer listener questions about meeting each other's families, blending traditions, and navigating in-laws as newlyweds. Jerry recalls being silently “glared at” by Mary's many brothers when he picked her up in his '66 Mustang, while Mary shares her anxious first trip to Oklahoma and meeting Jerry's grandmother at a small farmhouse gathering where strict kitchen rules, cows, cow pies, and competitive dominoes made a lasting impression. They describe traditions they kept—dominoes, St. Nicholas Day ornaments, Spekulatius cookies, German donuts at Easter, and simple chocolate bunnies—and discuss setting boundaries and communicating around holiday plans, especially with distance, divorce, and caregiving needs for Courtney. They reflect on lessons and sayings from their parents, service-focused faith, and how flexibility helps families stay connected over 38 years of marriage. Every long marriage has a season where one of you is sinking and the other is staring off into the distance, completely oblivious. Today we talk about ours — and how to recognize yours before the unraveling begins. Mary used to have a recurring nightmare during the hardest years of our marriage. She was sinking in quicksand, reaching for Jerry, and the more she struggled the deeper she went. He just stood there, looking off into the distance. That nightmare was a window into what was actually happening between us — the gradual uncoupling, the gentle tug on the thread of our marriage that, once pulled, was unraveling everything. If your marriage feels like a garden that hasn't been watered in a while, this episode is for you. We share the warning signs we missed and the small daily acts of weeding and watering that pulled us back from the brink. Coach's Corner 29: A Book Review of Spousal Prayer by Deacon James Keating

Can love in marriage really last? I believe it can—and not because we're strong enough or compatible enough, but because God meets us there. Staying in love isn't something we just grit our teeth and manage. It's something we learn through prayer. Prayer with the Lord shapes our hearts, and that same habit of prayer teaches us how to truly behold, listen to, forgive, and love our spouse. In this Coaches Corner, I review the book Spousal Prayer by Deacon James Keating. It's a small, powerful book that connects marriage and prayer in a way that's both deep and incredibly practical. We talk about why young people fear staying in love, how prayer brings us into the reality of love, and why marriage itself can become a living, breathing prayer. Whether you're married, preparing couples, or walking with families in ministry, this episode is meant to equip you—and remind you that lasting love is not only possible, it's sacramental. Married but on Different Faith Pages? | Catholic Marriage Advice When Your Spouse Isn't Growing SpirituallyWhat do you do when you love your spouse… but your faith lives look completely different? Many Catholic marriages experience a season where one spouse is growing deeper in their relationship with Jesus Christ, attending Holy Mass, praying the Rosary, and diving into the Catholic faith—while the other spouse feels distant, lukewarm, or uninterested. If you've ever wondered:• What if my spouse doesn't go to Mass? • How do I help my husband grow in faith? • How do I lead my wife spiritually without pushing her away? • Can a marriage survive different levels of faith? This episode of The Catholic Couple Podcast tackles one of the most common struggles in Catholic marriage: being married but not spiritually aligned. We discuss:✔ How to navigate different faith levels in marriage ✔ What the Catholic Church teaches about mixed-faith marriages ✔ The biggest mistakes couples make when trying to change their spouse ✔ How to evangelize your spouse without pressure or resentment ✔ The power of prayer, patience, and authentic witnessWe also explore insights from Sacred Scripture, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and the example of Monica of Hippo, whose faithful prayers helped lead to the conversion of her son Augustine of Hippo. The reality is:You cannot force someone into faith. But you can inspire faith through love, patience, and holiness. If you're struggling with:• A spouse who doesn't believe • A husband who won't go to church • A wife who isn't interested in faith • Feeling spiritually alone in marriageThis conversation will encourage you and give you practical Catholic guidance to help your marriage grow in unity and holiness.Because sometimes the most powerful evangelization in marriage isn't arguments…It's a faithful spouse living the Gospel.

How can we expect couples to live a sacramental marriage when they've never seen one lived? So many of the couples who walk into our parishes today aren't rooted in the life of the Church. Nine out of ten aren't attending Mass, many have simply “slid” into the relationship, and most have never witnessed a joyful, vibrant Christian marriage up close. And yet—we hand them content, classes, and checklists and hope it changes their lives. In this conversation with Ryan Verret, we dive into why that model is breaking down and why the real answer isn't more information, but more relationship. Ryan shares the deeply human insight at the heart of Witness to Love: that authentic conversion only moves at the pace of a friendship… and that the simplest act—having someone waiting for you in the pew—can open the door for grace to take root. Finding Joy in Motherhood, Janet Quinlan

The difficult, the monotony, the repetition is the sacrifice of motherhood. But it is ALWAYS in the sacrifice that we end up finding joy – if we're looking for it.It's when we sacrifice for another out of love, that we become a better person. We have a God-given mission as mothers – and as dads for those men listening. We are in partnership with God in conception and in raising our children. We are our children's first teachers in everything! When we see our role in our child's life as teacher, mentor, model, and as a calling from God it will change the way you parent.Check out my Virtue-Based Parenting Course to help you parent better and find JOY!Check out my free resources on marriage, parenting, home management, and faith life/mindset at janetquinlan.comFollow me on Instagram @janetquinlancoaching

How to Handle Backtalk from Your Child

It's when a child responds to authority, usually a parent, in a rude, defiant, or disrespectful way. Now, back talk isn't always about rebellion. It often comes from frustration, a need for control, or emotional overwhelm. And while it's frustrating, it's important to understand that it's developmentally normal. Kids, especially early teens and teens, are learning to assert themselves. But just because it's a normal developmental stage, doesn't mean it's okay. And when we feel disrespected or angry, we often speak disrespectfully to them as we tell them – or yell at them – about how disrespectful they're being to us.So, rather than focusing on their action – we need to focus on our action – that comes from what we think our role as parents should be.We need to be teachers. Our job as parents is to teach our children to speak with respect.Check out my free resources on marriage, parenting, home management, and faith life/mindset at janetquinlan.comFollow me on Instagram @janetquinlancoaching

“You're going to stay in this marriage.” This was the message Nicole Berlucchi heard from God. Before this, Nicole was convinced she was doing most of the work at home and in her marriage. Her friends told her she was a “saint” for putting up with her husband. To top it off, Nicole's husband was unwilling to go to therapy. Nicole was sure God was on her side. Nicole left her husband for four days to discern if she was going to leave him. While Nicole entered this time of discernment relatively certain she was headed for divorce, God made it clear that Nicole needed to change and give her marriage a chance.
