By the time The CBS Radio Mystery Theater debuted, the men and women associated with the show had been involved with each other for nearly forty years. Mary Jane Higby grew up in Los Angeles and remembered Hollywood before it was a radio hub. She was once called Queen of the soaps. Joan Banks, who later married Frank Lovejoy, remembered the New York hangouts. There she spent time with men and women like the oft-heavy Larry Haines. These men and women were usually overbooked. Joan Banks went to the west coast in 1948. It was about then that Television came into the picture. E.G. Marshall was a part of it from the start. Unfortunately, it wasn't long before radio began to decline, as Joe Julian remembered. But nearly twenty years later, thanks to Himan Brown, CBS was back in the radio drama business in 1974.

Many people, especially in the time before the internet, depended on the radio to hear new music, or any music for that matter, for the most part. For me, growing up on military bases, specifically in Germany most of my childhood, radio wasn't an option unless I wanted to hear Top 40. Once I heard Hip Hop, and my vow to "find everything that sounds like this", I heavily relied on trading and dubbing tapes with fellow music lovers and enthusiasts, and the most prized possessions of the 80s...tapes of New York Radio. There's a list of amazing, impacting, pioneering, and influential shows/DJs that come to mind, such as; Mr. Magic, Marley, Zulu Beats with Afrika Islam, The World Famous Supreme Team Show, Kool DJ Red Alert, Chuck Chillout, Awesome Two, Vandy C and Bill Blast, Awesome 2, and so on. This episode details those days, the passion and struggle to track down the latest tapes, and meeting all sorts of challenges along the way. And, eventually focuses on the radio station tapes that I most often got my hands on; WBLS and 98.7 Kiss FM, two rival New York stations. I also touch on a few other key radio shows that I was able to get tapes of or hear live, in the 80s, including Lady B and Mimi Brown in Philly, Electrifying Mojo, The Wizard a.k.a Jeff Mills, WKKC in Galesburg, and WNUR in Chicago. Amy and Jay Fisher discuss the restoration and operation of a 1950s-1960s high fidelity analog recording studio. In this episode, they talk about infrared glow of electron tubes, the Fear Podcast on WINS 1010 Radio, and the comparison of high fidelity in the Clovis Sounds Studio compared with New York Radio sound. Synergistic relationship of all components of broadcast and recording to produce a final result are mentioned. Further details about electronic rack weight and balance are discussed and potential floor locks for safety. Building of Rack #1 is detailed, and power mains feeds installed and power cord types. Signal cables are briefly described. Control Room and Recording safety is discussed, of primary importance. We detail the performance of Altec preamps and vocal compressors, and setup a testing arrangement of extremely fine-sounding small Altec A340A amplifier which produces extraordinary sound with a poor, cheap, small Public Address speaker and an input from computer streaming service. Quality and price comparisons are made from the 1950s to present time. Our approach to setup and troubleshooting in the studio is described from the macro to individual components based on timing and budget. Should repairs be focused on preservation or use? How much value is retained or lost by improving components to expand capabilities and quality? Power switches are to be installed on the amplifiers. Further information, photos, and history of the project is available at https://www.jayfisher.com/Fisher-Audio-Science.htm Engineered by Amy Fisher

Esther Bourdages is an art critic, radio journalist, independent curator, and musician based in Montréal. She is an improviser of extraordinary sensitivity, bringing a playfulness to her tactile manipulation of vinyl records, sometimes outright mishandling them. This freedom to destroy is indicative of a resistance to structure and formalism, but Esther’s work can’t be easily dismissed as some sort of exercise in catharsis. Instead her approach to live improvisation is raw and expressive, and cultivated over decades of ongoing exploration. Much of her recent studio work is for radiophonic diffusion, often based on field-recordings and with a politicized context. We discuss her unique approach to vinyl, the history of Canadian artist-run centres, and the intersection of art and sound from multiple perspectives. Interview recorded in Montreal, October 2020 Produced and mixed in Montreal, January 2021 Read more at: http://acloserlisten.com/2021/01/21/sp-episode-16-freedom-to-destroy-with-esther-b-podcast/ TRACKLIST ARTIST – “TITLE” (ALBUM, LABEL, YEAR) Esther B. –Think about the rhythm (Audio Postcard, 2020) Esther B. - excerpt a (live at Spiro Space, 2019) Esther B. / Erik Hove / Thom Gossage - The Space between - 01 Exclusive piece_no1!(Particles, Contour Editions, 2021) [the user] (Emmanuel Madan and Thomas MacIntosh) - “Silo # 5” (Silophone, The Kitchen, 2001) Esther B. - excerpt b (live at Spiro Space, 2019) Luigi Turra / France Jobin – “France Jobin Variation” (Fukinsei VARIATIONS, 2020) Togetherness! – “Salaam/Looking for Gilchrist (Abdullah Ibrahim / William Parker)” (Togetherness!, Mr. E Records, 2018) Martin Tétreault – “Abandon” (La Nuit Où J'Ai Dit Non, Audioview, 1997) Christian Marclay & Okkyung Lee – “Rubbings” (From The Earth To The Spheres Vol. 7, Opax, 2005) Esther B.- Silence film : quand l’audience devient la trame sonore 2016 Anne-F Jacques / Tim Olive – “Sur Place/Staying” (AMPLIFY 2020) Joane Hétu / Diane Labrosse / Zeena Parkins / Danielle P. In today’s episode, I sit down with Wendy Williams. After years of hustling in the male-dominated world of New York Radio, Wendy has risen above the noise by keeping it real and telling it like it is. Wendy feels real, because she is real. And at the end of the day she’s a devoted mother, wife, and no-nonsense boss. Wendy and I sat down at her studio in New York after one of her shows to discuss the simple daily rituals that keep herself centered. If you enjoyed listening to this interview, there is a whole more where that came from. I break things down even further in my new book and audiobook, Rise and Grind. Check out Rise and Grind wherever books and audiobooks are sold.

East New York Radio Live, 4th of July Weekend! Sojourner Truth and all other New York enslaved Blacks were emancipated on The 4th of July, 1827. In 1799 the New York Legislature passed "An Act for the Gradual Abolition of Slavery" with only token opposition. It provided for gradual manumission. The law freed all children born to slave women after July 4, 1799, but not at once. The males became free at 28, the females at 25. Till then, they would be the property of the mother's slaver. Slaves already in servitude before July 4, 1799, remained slaves for life, though they were reclassified as "indentured servants." The law sidestepped all question of legal and civil rights, thus avoiding the objections that had blocked the earlier bill. The activity of kidnappers and cheats in selling slaves out of the state in spite of the laws was said to have been the impetus for the 1817 statute that gave freedom to New York slaves who had been born before July 4, 1799 -- but not until July 4, 1827. "One of the slaves who were freed in New York on July, 1827, the woman who named herself Sojourner Truth was destined to be the most remarkable." -Benjamin Quarles, "Black Abolitionists" pg 121
