The question becomes: how can you strengthen your vagal tone? The most prominent way is to work on deep, diaphragmatic breathing, as breath is one of the vagus nerve's key regulators. The more slowly and deeply you can breathe, the more you can summon this rest-and-digest mode and relax. In fact, making noises such as humming, chanting, or praying also invokes the same effect, as the vagus nerve is connected to the voice box and larynx. You can also practice splashing yourself (start with the face) with cold water, as it briefly evokes your fight-or-flight response, but then allows you to practice summoning your rest-and- digest response. The vagus nerve makes it clear that you have the ability to control your physical response, thus giving your brain the chance to think at peak performance. The vagus nerve is also the embodiment of the inseparable nature of the brain and the body. As the vagus nerve shows us, to boost your brain, you must focus on everything that supports and surrounds it. Questions or comments regarding the podcast? Our attitude toward new information determines the extent of our learning. If we are “soldiers” who seek only to defend the beliefs we already have, we don't grow or learn. But as “scouts” we learn for its own sake, reaching out in curiosity and receptivity. We aren't afraid of the truth; instead we actively seek to learn from it and improve ourselves. We all have a native perspective, a set of assumptions, a non-neutral attitude and even unconscious bias. Yet, we all believe that we are the unbiased ones who look at everything objectively and without letting our emotions cloud our judgement. We only develop as people when we become conscious of these fallacies—and conscious of our ability to choose something different. Part of critical thinking is deliberately seeking out evidence against our chosen beliefs, rather than only seeking data that confirms them. Look for reputable sources and inform yourself about various things that are important to you. Inevitably, you'll discover that some of your beliefs were mistaken or simply naïve, but that is a surefire sign of growth as well. If all else fails, abide by Darwin's Golden Rule of trying to poke holes in your own argument. After all, it's better if you do it rather than someone else. * Mental Model #28: Sturgeon's Law: 90% of everything is crap, so be selective with your time and energy. Start with the 10% absolute non-crap and slowly work your way out. This is a more restrictive version of the Pareto Principle in some ways. * Mental Model #29-30: Parkinson's Laws: First, triviality can easily set in because it feels good to feel productive (even in minute ways) and voice your opinion. Know your real priorities and ask if progress is actually being made toward them. Second, work expands to fill the time it is given, so give it less time. Speaking of more neural connections, learning how to play an instrument or speak a new language literally activates dormant or underused parts of your brain. These skills provide different types of adaptations, and teach you patterns and processes and how to apply them to other areas of your life. They are both truly whole-brain activities that require integrating multitudes of new information and even muscle memory. Best of all, this type of neural growth can transfer to other disciplines and practices. Finally, what about just reading or saying information aloud? This simple act has been shown to improve thinking, cognition, memory, and comprehension through something called the production effect. Information reproduction requires a significant amount of active participation and engagement. As is this chapter's theme, the more ways you process, engage, and challenge your brain, the more you will benefit from it. Questions or comments regarding the podcast? Mental Model #26: Hanlon's Razor: Malicious acts are far more likely to be explained by incompetence, stupidity, or neglect; assumptions about one's intentions are likely to be wrong. Improve your relationships by giving the benefit of the doubt and assuming, at worst, absent-mindedness. Mental Model #27: Pareto Principle: There is a natural distribution that tends to occur, where 20% of the actions we take are responsible for 80% of the results; thus, we should focus on the 20% for maximum input-to-output ratio. This is in the name of becoming results-driven and simply following what the data is telling you. This is not about cutting corners; it is about understanding what causes an impact. Socrates was rather a know-it-all, or at least that's how he would have appeared according to the Socratic Method. It was a technique of questioning a stance or opinion in a way to shed light on what was known and what gaps in knowledge existed. To live with more integrity and honesty, we need to acknowledge that growth and comfort are mutually exclusive. Can we accept all that we are, even the dark and unwanted parts of ourselves? We must, because that is the only way we can ever improve. Pain, failure, mistakes; all of these are a part of life and we must not run away from them, because life is a package deal. The good life is never lived in a state of comfort devoid of hardships. When we can embrace our vulnerabilities with honesty and self-compassion, we can empower ourselves to act with more focused intention—and live the life we want. The efficacy of brain training programs has been dispelled multiple times. This is because we can't necessarily train ourselves to be more intelligent, strictly speaking. We can, however, engage our brains in multiple and novel ways, and somewhat indirectly, become smarter as a result of that neural strengthening. We can improve our fluid intelligence, but not our crystal intelligence. This means that when we want to boost our brains, we're not really focusing on “improving” the brain itself, but rather how to stimulate it and adapt to different situations. When it comes to relaxing, there are a few methods that run counter to what you might assume is most helpful. Some people just want to turn into a vegetable on the couch, and that works, to a certain degree. But video games, television, and reading are all excellent ways of combining rest, relaxation, and beneficial mental engagement. They all emphasize different modes of thought— video games force you to adapt to quicker reaction speeds and problem- solving; reading and television allow you to inhabit the minds of others. The media itself is not important, actually; it's just that it is pleasurable mental engagement that leaves you feeling better about yourself after the fact. Ultimately, maintaining healthy boundaries is a task that we have to persist with throughout our lives. As we discover new and better ways to communicate, develop new values and priorities, or enter relationships with different sets of people, the way we enforce our boundaries must adapt. It's easy to start and maintain a mini habit. Remember, this is how you start to address the person you are training yourself to be. First, you think about a regular goal you'd like to pursue. It can be vague, like "fitness," or it can be more specific, like "Work out 45 minutes or more every day." Once you establish the end goal, you can then minify it into the smallest behavior that gets the process started. Questions or comments regarding the podcast? Self-delusion is the biggest mental block to our full and honest awareness. All of us delude ourselves about reality to some extent; it is nothing to be ashamed of. However, self-deception has many negative consequences for our growth as individuals, and we must identify what it is about our lives that we have chosen to blind ourselves to, in order to avoid ignoring opportunities to work on our flaws. We know self-delusion is at play if we recognize defense mechanisms, which develop to protect our ego from uncomfortable truths. Nobody can tackle our defense mechanisms but us. There are many common mechanisms such as denial, repression, regression, projection, displacement, etc. Each can be identified through its own unique indicators, but the thing unifying them all is that they allow us to stay in a comfortable bubble where we can get away with not challenging ourselves enough to experience substantial growth. So far, we have primarily focused on the way others violate our boundaries. However, we also inevitably violate boundaries that others have. This does not necessarily make us toxic or bad individuals, but it helps to recognize our faulty behavioral patterns so that we can fix them and have healthier relationships. Identifying our own mistakes can be hard, but some examples of pushing others' boundaries might be engaging in gossip, arriving excessively late to a meeting, sharing secrets with others despite being told not to, etc. Keep the words flowing by https://www.buymeacoffee.com/RussellNewton (buying me a coffee). Impulses are the polar opposite of self-discipline, and they are things we must consciously train against indulging in. Oh, but it's hard. Impulses are behind every subconscious thought that we struggle to rein in. How can we ever hope to combat this? Generally, we must try to interject space and time between a thought and an action. We can do this by simply counting slowly to 10, labeling your thoughts and feelings, writing down the facts of a situation, and asking yourself why five times and making sure to answer honestly. Stoicism is about finding your power within—your self-control and discipline to live a good life. Marcus Aurelius, a Roman emperor who championed Stoic philosophy, advanced the idea that the quality of your life would depend on your ability to use reason as the ruling element in the way you conduct yourself, deal with others, and handle situations. He advocated mental toughness amidst adversity and fortitude of character amidst miseries. Stoicism recognizes the hardships inherent in life as well as the reality and inevitability of death. Acknowledging that such are inescapable in the human condition, adherents of Stoic philosophy strive to veer away from complaining about such things and instead shift their focus to those that are within human power to change and control—the perspective and attitude taken in the face of challenge and adversity. Assertive communication is standing up for yourself, being clear and direct when sharing your thoughts and feelings, and protecting your rights without taking away the rights of other people. Assertive communication is a product of high self-esteem and doesn't come naturally to people who haven't been taught to respect themselves and others and to value themselves on a physical, spiritual, and emotional level. Rene Descartes invented modern geometry, was a leading physicist, and was one of the most prominent Western philosophers in history. He is most famous for his investigations on the essence of knowledge and what could and could not be proven. This was eventually reduced down to the statement that if one thinks, they exist. I think, therefore I am. Imhotep is a name long lost to history, despite his influence in ancient Egypt. He was the physician to the pharaohs that he served, and he was the architect for the first pyramids in Egyptian history. His engineering prowess didn't stop at the pyramids, however, as he was responsible for much of the early irrigation that allowed the Egyptian civilization to channel the power of the Nile. Just like we have empathetic communication, there's also empathetic listening. Empathetic listening is very similar to active listening, wherein all of your focus is devoted solely to the speaker. There are a few different types of empathetic listening, such as making space, reflecting, and reacting. When you make space, you suspend your own ego and “make space” for the message that is being delivered through verbal and non-verbal cues. Things like making eye contact and having a receptive body language are all examples of making space. When we reflect, we're mirroring what someone has told us right back at them. This is the best and easiest way to make someone feel heard and understood because it gives them proof that you've been listening throughout. Try to keep your own insights out of the equation when reflecting and simply focus on projecting the same emotions and words that are being expressed to you. Reacting is the most common form of listening, but it's also the one where we should exercise the most caution. Reactions need not be comprehensive or something major. They can be subtle, like when we nod our heads along with the speaker. Mental Model #20: Avoiding Thinking Like an Expert. Experts think about the big picture and sometimes can't be bothered with small details. Small details, counterintuitively, are mostly paid attention to by novices, because they are absorbing new information and going slowly through a process. Thinking like an expert in a given field will probably mean that you make small mistakes because you engage in assumptive thinking and focus on overall effects and conception. Elon Musk and his usage of first principles thinking is all about rejecting what is thought to be fact. He describes a process where you identify your assumptions in the face of solving a problem, you break them down, and then you solve the problem by breaking down old barriers. Once you realize that truth is not as set in stone as you think it is, possibilities begin to unfold. Reinvent the wheel—because maybe you can find a better one. Charles Darwin lived his remarkable life according to one simple golden rule: immersing yourself in the world of your opposition and contrary opinions. This is how you can legitimately test the truth of your opinions or arguments. It is the ultimate example of avoiding confirmation bias. He turns his doubts and skepticism onto himself rather than others, which is the far more normal course of action. Impulses are the antithesis of self-discipline. They are unpredictable urges that can take over at any point. Studies have shown that impulses are stronger during emotional reactions. Thus, battling impulses is about putting as much time as possible between an emotional reaction and the actual response you give. Delaying tactics, in other words. You can use the 10 second/minute rule, label your feelings, write down the facts of a situation without regard to your personal perspective, and ask "why" five times to understand the root of the impulse. There are generally four styles of communication: passive, aggressive, passive-aggressive, and assertive. You can guess which one is the best to shoot for. When you seek to control only yourself, you are assertive; when you seek to control others, you become aggressive. Questions or comments regarding the podcast? Next, we come to the practice of discomfort and all that it entails. By definition, anything that requires exercising self-discipline is uncomfortable. We'd rather not do it, otherwise it would be known as fun. This puts us in a quandary; sometimes there is nothing else we can do but suck it up and push forward, despite all the tactics and mindsets we've discussed in this book. At some point, we will have to be uncomfortable, and sometimes life is just a matter of how much discomfort you can stomach. Thus, we must practice it, and we will eventually grow immune to an extent. Practicing discomfort is like a vaccine against your impulses and weak moments. When you can slowly gain perspective that discomfort is not so bad and ultimately temporary, you'll be amazed at what you can accomplish. The key to validating someone effectively is being able to communicate empathetically. But what is communication, really? Essentially it is the passing of a message between a sender and a recipient. The message must be framed in a way that is understandable to the recipient. One of the key elements of communicating successfully is that the speaker must have empathy. Thus, to ensure that your words are communicated effectively, you must be empathetic, which means you must make an effort to understand the recipient and the best ways to cater your message to them. We can't help it; it's how we've been indoctrinated from childhood. Of course, it's not necessarily wrong either. I'm talking about our drive to reach toward achievements instead of avoiding negative consequences. Where other chapters of this book are about mental models, we introduce anti-mental models here to represent how you can achieve just as much if you only focus on one thing: avoidance. Mental Model #19: Avoid Direct Goals. Direct goals are like shooting for the moon, while anti-goals, or inverse goals, are about avoiding crashing into the earth and doing everything to prevent that from happening. This has just as good a chance of achieving the outcome you want through direct goals, but it might get you there quicker and more efficiently. Simply articulate the factors involved in a worst-case scenario, then devote your time to preventing them. Finally, utilize self-testing and practicing drawing information out of your brain instead of trying to stuff information into it. This may be counterintuitive, but the more we can engage in mini tests, the better we memorize and learn. This is known as retrieval practice, as you are retrieving information. Though this is mostly done through the context of flashcards, the overarching lesson is that we must be active in our efforts. The bigger the struggle, the deeper the learning and memorization. When you force yourself to learn, well, you will learn. There is no real shortcut. Some of the greatest thinkers of human history have shared many similar opinions on how to think. That's no coincidence, and I'll trust them, especially when there is a consensus. Clear thinking starts with deconstructing what you think you know, understanding that you know nothing, and then building up from there. It's tough and tedious, to say the least. Elon Musk and his usage of first principles thinking is all about rejecting what is thought to be fact. He describes a process where you identify your assumptions in the face of solving a problem, you break them down, and then you solve the problem by breaking down old barriers. Though riddles are often framed in relatively simple words, they can be incredibly complex, utilizing many different but important modes of thinking. When faced with a tricky problem, asking yourself the right questions can often be the key to solving them. These include analyzing whether you've identified the problem correctly, what a solution might look like, whether the tools you're using to solve the issue are actually correct, etc. Questions or comments regarding the podcast? Thomas Young is a curious case, because few people know him by name, but instead know him as the one who proved Newton's theories wrong. Obviously this required deep knowledge of physics and the scientific method. Young was also one of the main driving forces behind deciphering the Egyptian language of hieroglyphics through his work on translating the Rosetta Stone. All of this, despite his primary training as a physician. Unfortunately, some people will continue to disrespect your boundaries despite being warned repeatedly. In such cases, you might have to cut contact either temporarily or permanently, even if these are people who you value and love dearly. By refusing to respect your boundaries, they are essentially telling you that your well-being does not matter to them. These are not the kinds of people you need in your life, anyway, and letting them go can often be the easiest and best option. Questions or comments regarding the podcast? Peer pressure can be positive. The sad truth is that we are products of our physical and social environments. With regards to the latter, the people around us can sometimes make or break us. Thus, we can construct our social circles to help us become more self-discipline. You can use accountability partners, role models, mentors, and teachers. You can also dip into the dark side and use the negative emotions of public shame and embarrassment to keep you accountable. * Mental Model #18: Get Back to First Principles. When we try to solve problems, oftentimes we attempt to follow methods or a specific path just because they are the conventional means. So far, we've looked at romantic relationships and sex, connections with family and community, and the value of taking it easy and laughing at it all once in a while. All of these things can add to our social health and well-being, making us feel like we're a part of the world, which in turn lowers stress and keeps our brains ticking over properly. But there's one more way in which we can be connected to the world and to others around us, and it's not something we're primed to think of all that often in the modern Western world: our ancestors. With a growth mindset, we see failure as the gift it is: an opportunity to learn and prove that we are evolving and changing. Fixed mindsets teach us that failures are something to be scared of, and to avoid because they are a damning indictment of us as individuals. We view them as judgments rather than as merely part of the process of learning. However, growth mindsets help us see failures in a positive light because they represent the potential to be better. We can develop a growth mindset by abandoning grand goals somewhere off in the distance and instead focus on tiny, consistent daily habits that bring us closer and closer to excellence. Having a growth mindset involves valuing the process over the outcome, letting go of outlandish expectations for ourselves, accepting our shortcomings, and prioritizing learning to improve above all else. Challenging yourself unnecessarily by being overly ambitious with your goal or having unrealistic expectations for yourself only depletes your self-discipline while setting you up for failure. Understand that the best creative thinking will draw upon different fields and disciplines. What is novel is one discipline is natural and worn in another. One of the best examples of this is Einstein's combinatory play, which interweaves logical and creative thought—as a mental break, or through combining the two thought processes. Einstein's other contribution to creative thinking is in his usage of thought experiments and playing out hypotheticals in detail to their logical conclusion. To get more creative, think more plainly. It sounds counterintuitive, but simple thoughts underlie complex processes and solutions. Thinking more basically allows you to refocus on what matters and escape what is known as functional fixedness. When we start to view goals and concepts in isolation and free of contextual constraints, we are freed. Finally, try out an idea box. It's a methodical way for you to rapidly generate a massive amount of ideas geared toward the exact problem you want to solve. It's similar to the SCAMPER method because it very clearly and visually encourages force fitting. Questions or comments regarding the podcast?
