Just like we have empathetic communication, there's also empathetic listening. Empathetic listening is very similar to active listening, wherein all of your focus is devoted solely to the speaker. There are a few different types of empathetic listening, such as making space, reflecting, and reacting. When you make space, you suspend your own ego and “make space” for the message that is being delivered through verbal and non-verbal cues. Things like making eye contact and having a receptive body language are all examples of making space. When we reflect, we're mirroring what someone has told us right back at them. This is the best and easiest way to make someone feel heard and understood because it gives them proof that you've been listening throughout. Try to keep your own insights out of the equation when reflecting and simply focus on projecting the same emotions and words that are being expressed to you. Reacting is the most common form of listening, but it's also the one where we should exercise the most caution. Reactions need not be comprehensive or something major. They can be subtle, like when we nod our heads along with the speaker. Like with reflecting, our reactions shouldn't be about our own viewpoints, but rather indications that we've understood those of the other person. Questions or comments regarding the podcast? Understand that the best creative thinking will draw upon different fields and disciplines. What is novel is one discipline is natural and worn in another. One of the best examples of this is Einstein's combinatory play, which interweaves logical and creative thought—as a mental break, or through combining the two thought processes. Einstein's other contribution to creative thinking is in his usage of thought experiments and playing out hypotheticals in detail to their logical conclusion. To get more creative, think more plainly. It sounds counterintuitive, but simple thoughts underlie complex processes and solutions. Thinking more basically allows you to refocus on what matters and escape what is known as functional fixedness. When we start to view goals and concepts in isolation and free of contextual constraints, we are freed. Finally, try out an idea box. It's a methodical way for you to rapidly generate a massive amount of ideas geared toward the exact problem you want to solve. Cultivating empathy in ourselves is something all of us should endeavor to do. There are three main steps to do this. First, we must be open-minded. Second, we must learn to walk in other people's shoes. Third, we must communicate our acceptance of their experience in an appropriate manner. Being open-minded is a commonly exalted virtue that many of us can struggle with. We tend to have difficulties understanding the ways different people perceive the world and express emotions when these conflict with our own views. The best way to remedy this is to simply talk to people from different backgrounds and viewpoints. Expose yourself to different discourses and ways of understanding things. Travel far and wide if you can, and familiarize yourself with cultures where things are done differently from your own. Walking in someone else's shoes requires that we pay as close attention to them as possible so that we can understand where they're coming from and what influences are at play. We must suspend our own views and see the way from the other's lens. A great way to inculcate this skill is to simply read fiction. This puts you into the mind of a character that is not you, and you get to observe how they describe events, emotions, thoughts, etc. Lastly, our understanding is only worth something when we can communicate it well. Stories can also be the basis for an inside joke. When you think about it, an inside joke is something that comes up multiple times with the same person and evokes a positive emotion. It's the same topic brought up in a different context. Thus, you just need to call back to a story through a conversation and there's a good chance it will stick as a “Remember when we talked about…” moment. The more you use it, the more a unique bond is created between only the two of you. Improving your storytelling ability is important, but what about eliciting stories from others? You can phrase your questions carefully to ask for stories rather than answers from people, which is a simple way to make conversation easier and more enjoyable for everyone involved. There are ways to make people open up to you and want to keep gabbing. Remember the lesson we learned with the 1:1:1 method in pinpointing the emotions that people are trying to evoke. Even if we find that we have been less than pleasant in some of our interactions, there are several things we can do to better ourselves. The first and most important step here is to accept and listen when others tell us about any misdeed we may have committed. Just like we are free to have boundaries based on our values and desires, so are others. There is no right or wrong boundary, and we must be accommodating of others without judgement. In cases of deep cultural differences, it is important to remember that the other person comes from a completely different background, with unique experiences that are different from our own. The 1:1:1 method of storytelling is to simplify it as much as possible. The impact of a story won't necessarily be stronger if it is ten sentences versus two sentences. Therefore, the 1:1:1: method focuses on the discussion and reaction that occurs after a story. A story can be composed solely of (1) one action, (2) one emotion to be evoked, and (3) a one-sentence summary. Don't get lost rambling, and also make sure your listener feels that they are fully participating in the conversation.
