Why is it so hard to remember that we deserve to be heard? Staying silent in our professional lives can feel like the safe choice, but it can have unintended consequences on our overall career trajectory. In this episode, Elaine Lin Hering shares what her research, experience in mediation and conflict management, and new book "Unlearning Silence" have to say about why so many of us—especially women—are reticent to raise our voices. She highlights the intrinsic connection between wielding our voices—both audibly and through our actions—and recognizing our self-worth. Examine the ways that silence impacts your own life, including:Where does our tendency toward silence stem from?;Why we need to question and dismantle the “babble hypothesis”;Why just talking more isn't the goal of unlearning silence; How leaders can actively push back against silencing team members.Related Links:Elaine's book, Unlearning Silence: How to Speak Your Mind, Unleash Talent, and Live More Fully - https://elainelinhering.com/book/Episode 428, Finding Your Voice at Work - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode428Episode 246, Lessons from Improv to Own Your Voice and Speak Up at Work - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode246Episode 377, What all women can learn from women of color in leadership with Deepa Purushothaman - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode377Episode 445, 3 Tips For Managing Too Many Meetings - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode445SPEAK UP: A Live Assertive Communication Course For Women In The Workplace - https://www.bossedup.org/speakupMicro Activism: How You Can Make a Difference in the World Without a Bullhorn by Omkari L. If you've always considered “reprogramming your brain” to be mystical mumbo jumbo, this guest might just change your mind. I certainly had to adjust my preconceived notions when I read Kara Loewentheil‘s new book, Take Back Your Brain: How a Sexist Society Gets in Your Head and How to Get It Out.Kara and I talk about the insidious nature of our patriarchal society and the impact of that socialization on our brains. We cover making the leap into your dream job and the balance between systemic and individual change. The founder of A New School of Feminist Thought, Kara teaches women how to rewire their thought patterns to spur societal change, and her work is just the eye-opening and mind-expanding approach that women can benefit from.Learn more about how your brain works and how to deprogram the patriarchy from within, starting with:Our tendency to throw out the dreams that don't please everyone;Mistaking a layer of liberating beliefs for a fundamental cognitive shift;Forgetting that every major social change started with one person's thoughts; How we define and approach radical acceptance and radical action.Related Links:Order Kara's book - https://www.takebackyourbrainbook.com/Listen to the UnF*** Your Brain podcast - https://schoolofnewfeministthought.com/podcasts/Connect with Kara online - https://schoolofnewfeministthought.com/about/EP 323: How To Lead With Emotional Intelligence | Best Of Bossed Up - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode323Permission to Feel: The Power of Emotional Intelligence to Achieve Well-Being and Success by Marc Brackett - https://bookshop.org/p/books/permission-to-feel-unlocking-the-power-of-emotions-to-help-our-kids-ourselves-and-our-society-thrive-marc-brackett/9879244?ean=9781250212832Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl - https://bookshop.org/p/books/man-s-search-for-meaning-viktor-e-frankl/8996943?ean=9780807014271Speak Up: A Live Assertive Communication Course for Women in the Workplace - https://www.bossedup.org/speakupBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/

How many meeting invites do you get each week? If your company is like many American organizations, it's probably too many. Recent research shows that 70% of all company meetings are keeping teams from completing their tasks. On top of that, a Harvard Business Review article reports that “Ineffective meetings that waste our time can negatively impact psychological, physical, and mental well-being.” Yikes! In this episode, I share three steps that can help reduce meeting overwhelm.
