Black Sunday (1960), Blood and Black Lace (1964), and A Bay of Blood (1971) There are films by certain directors that are truly iconic—classics of the genre we sometimes assume everyone has already seen. But it's easy to forget that, right now, there are fans just beginning their journey into horror. Whether due to age or a newfound curiosity, they're taking their first steps into the genre. For those unfamiliar with him, we'd like to introduce one of horror's true maestros: Mario Bava. And for those already acquainted with his work, maybe it's time for a revisit—to once again be stunned by what he brings to the screen. If it's been a few years, you may find yourself seeing things in a whole new way. That's one of the beautiful things about cinema. The three films we've chosen highlight important parts of Bava's career and show how his work helped shape entire subgenres—from gothic horror to giallo to the slasher film. Whether you're discovering him for the first time or coming back for a fresh look, these films are a perfect place to begin. One quick correction: Edgar Wallace was a British writer, not American. Films mentioned in this episode: Baron Blood (1972), A Bay of Blood (1971), Black Sabbath (1963), Black Sunday (1960), Blood and Black Lace (1964), Caltiki the Immortal Monster (1959), The Church (1989), Creature with the Blue Hand (1967), Curse of the Crying Woman (1963), Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Danger: Diabolik (1968), The Day the Sky Exploded (1958), Death Walks at Midnight (1972), Death Walks in High Heels (1971), Deep Red (1975), The Demon (1982), Demons (1985), Django Kill…If You Live, Shoot! Big thank you to the legendary Chris Sarandon for coming on my show for an interview! Chris talked about starting out in theater at the Catholic University of America, being nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Leon Shermer in Dog Day Afternoon, and his introduction to Horror as a viewer. He explained why Horror was looked down upon by actors at a time and how that viewpoint changed in the 80s. He got into his legendary role as the vampire Jerry Dandrige in the original Tom Holland's 1985 Fright Night, his favorite scenes from the film, and that if Tom Holland was doing the sequel he would have most likely reprised his role as Jerry Dandrige. He discussed his role as Detective Mike Norris in Tom Holland's 1988 Child's Play and his iconic voiceover of Jack Skellington in Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. He revealed the moment when he thought that The Nightmare Before Christmas and his role as Jack Skellington would become a mega hit amongst audiences. He announced that his memoir Heroes, Vampires, and Villains should be releasing next year sometime in 2022 as well as his own podcast. We finished the interview talking sports. Chris is a fan of the Yankees, Giants, and Knicks. Stay tuned for everything that he has on the way! Follow Chris Sarandon on Instagram: @theofficialchrissarandon and Twitter: @sarandon_chris. As a New York freelance musician, today's guest has played more gigs and, in more situations, than he could possibly ever list, but moving to New York in the early 80's a lot of young players started gigging in the Latin circuit which was huge at that time. A player could work with multiple Latin groups and multiple gigs in one night, often not finishing before the sun came up. It was through these gigs that he met many players in other bands, and eventually found his way to playing many engagements with Latin artists such as Celia Cruz, Tito Puentes and Dave Valentin. In the '90s he fronted a contemporary fusion group of his original music and arrangements led by Tenor and Bass trombones and released a sampler CD. Upon hearing his CD Jazziz magazine voted him one of the top 10 unsigned jazz artists in the country and released a compilation CD which included his original composition “Night Child”. International recording artist and founder of Hip-Bone Music, Michael Davis writes about our guest saying that he “...brings his A-game as instrumentalist, composer, and arranger to his dynamic new release “Into The Night”. It is my honor to introduce today's guest, Eric Goletz.

Very happy to have the legendary Tom Holland on the podcast, speaking to us from the United States. We discuss his new book The Notch (links below, buy it, it's a corker), the controversial ending of Thinner, and his life in the film industry including how his first job was to write a sequel to Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. Plus, Tom gives us some great anecdotes about meeting and working with Stephen King himself. I was reading an interview with you in Black Static where you discussed your childhood. You mentioned locking yourself away and reading books on weekends and over the summer break. I can certainly relate! What were those books you read back then, and which ones made you want to become a writer?2. You also mentioned that you were an independent filmmaker earlier on? What movies?3. Is this a career path you're still pursuing at all?4. Are there any movies you'd say influenced your writing?5. You write beautifully about friendships in your fiction, so I'm guessing that you must have had some close friends growing up?6. A lot of your stories have a strong sense of loss and longing. Without my being too nosy, I was wondering why these themes attract you?7. Your Fiction is a little difficult to classify. I hesitate at calling it weird fiction because there's certainly horror in there. If you were to classify your fiction, what would it be?8. Were you surprised when the HWA nominated your collection, AND HER SMILE WILL UNTETHER THE UNIVERSE, for a Stoker?9. The Clawfoot Requiem, which is in Untether the Universe, has one of the strongest openings I've ever read. How did you come to write that one?10. The Man in the Ambry reminded me of older, classical ghost stories, though we never really know what exactly is going on. That kind of ambiguity gets me excited. It's immersive for the reader, involving them. Some readers want things explained for them, though. Considering a lot of the fiction of yours I've read hold that mystery or ambiguity, I was wondering if you get any negative feedback for it?11. Ambiguity is tough to get right. I think that you handle it perfectly because it feels like the answers are all there, and the more you think about it, the more unsettling it feels. When writing, how do you figure out what information to let the reader in on and what to let them try and figure out for themselves to achieve this?12. How many drafts do you typically go through before you feel a story is complete?13. All the stories in Untether the Universe that I've read (I'm only at the halfway mark at this time) have a very original feel to them. How do you keep each story fresh?14. Although you grew up in a small town in Ohio, your debut novel, The Rust Maidens, is about a young woman who grew up in the decaying industrial part of Cleveland. Part of the rust belt. Was Cleveland close to where you grew up? And are there any similarities between your own childhood and that of Phoebe Shaw's?15. There's so much truth-telling in Rust Maidens. So much symbolism. I truly think that it would do well being taught in high schools not just because of the symbolism, but also the historical aspects of unions and industrial battles we saw taking place in the late 1970s and early 1980s. What was the research like?16. Did you set out to write a book with these deep, sociological themes?17. There's also some really good scary scenes. Like where our hero is stuck in a mansion. Very creepy! How do you approach creating scenes that scare the reader? 18. I mentioned Black Static earlier. With them, you published the short story Songs To Help You Cope When Your Mom Won't Stop Haunting You And Your Friends, which is related to Rust Maidens. Which story came first?19. I love the song choices you list in that story. Do you listen to music while writing?20. You've also have a novella you released with Broken Eye Books in 2017. It's called Pretty Marys All in a Row. I have not read this one yet but plan to ASAP. Can you tell us what it's about? 21. February is, as you know, women in horror month. You've been writing a series about women horror writers on your blog, called Fear and the Feminine, where you interviewed women horror writers. Can you tell us more about this project?22. I think that horror and science fiction is where women writers are most often forgotten or dismissed as serious writers. Why is it this way in your opinion?23. What do you think we can do to help educate readers that there are women who not only write horror, but write it well? 24. What advice would you give young women writers just starting out?25. But one November day, moments after dismissing her class, a girl’s face appears above the students’ desks–“a wild numinous face with startling blue eyes, a face floating on top of shapeless drapes of purples and blues where arms and legs should have been. Terror rushes through Nora’s body–the kind of raw terror you feel when there’s no way out, when every cell in your body, your entire body, is on fire–when you think you might die. “Twenty-four hours later, while on Thanksgiving vacation, the face appears again. Shaken and unsteady, Nora meets with neurologists and eventually, a psychiatrist. As the story progresses, a terrible secret is discovered–a secret that pushes Nora toward an even deeper psychological breakdown. This breathtaking debut novel examines the impact of traumatic childhood experiences and the fragile line between past and present. Exquisitely nuanced and profoundly intimate, The Night Child is a story of resilience, hope, and the capacity of the mind, body, and spirit to save itself despite all odds.

A little preface to this episode regarding my choices. On my list of essential October movies you won't hear titles like Halloween, Friday the 13th, or Nightmare on Elm Street. This is because while those movies and their copious sequels, crossovers, and remakes are deserving in their own right, for the purpose of Fear Boners, they’re a little too obvious and instead I decided to go with a wider range of films. One of my main goals with this short podcast series was to try and expose listeners to a breadth of options within the horror film genre that they may not have encountered before. Therefore I have omitted these series and series like them (*cough* Saw *cough*) from the following lists. Episode 2 October Essentials: Night of the Living Dead (68’) Original Universal Monster movies including Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolfman, Mummy, Invisible Man, Creature from the Black Lagoon Tales from the Crypt (72’) Vault of Horror Black Sabbath Tales from the Darkside: The Movie Trilogy of Terror Creepshow 1 & 2 Trick r’ Treat Tales of Halloween VHS 1-3 ABCs of Death 1, 2, 2.5 The Thing (82’) In the Mouth of Madness (Correction: This movie came out after Jurassic Park!!) Videodrome The Fly (86’) [REC] 1&2 Drag Me to Hell American Werewolf in London The Blob (58’ & 88’) Night of the Creeps Fright Night (85’) Re-Animator Hellraiser (1&2) Movies also mentioned: The Bad Batch A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night Child’s Play Puppet Master Down in Front Patreon Question about out next review: Down In Front Facebook Page Email us @ Downinfrontpodcast@gmail.com Down in Front Youtube Channel Tweet us @_DIFP twitch.tv/downinfrontpodcast We are on stitcher! In the Dark of the Night (Child of Light) Su and Scott come together to discuss how much much they enjoyed Ubisoft Montreal's Child of Light. Su's grammar breaks down at one point and apparently she also thinks that “Mage” and “Magician” are different things. In her defense, Scott isn't much better…he thinks he can kill things…to death… Oh well, all the better to laugh at. We hope you enjoy this podcast and check this game out!
