On this edition of Parallax Views, Nikolas Schreck of the controversial cult deathrock/experimental band Radio Werewolf returns to discuss Wally George. For those unfamiliar, Wally George was the host of The Hot Seat, a popular talk show that aired in Southern California in the 80s into the 90s and even the 2000s before his passing. Dubbed the "Father of Combat TV", George provided a carnival-esque show which revolved around his shouting matches with various guests. On-air he presented himself as a conservative firebrand, complete with a John Wayne photo on his desk and an enlarged picture of a Space Shuttle blasting off behind him with the word "USA #1" written beneath. He'd bring on guests he deemed "sickos" and "freakos" including Satanists, marijuana legalization proponents, and, of course, liberals. In other words, Wally George pioneered the "Own the Libs" schtick/gimmick of Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck, and figures today like Ben Shapiro as well as being a precursor to the combative-and-chaotic talk show trash TV format of shows programs like the Jerry Springer Show. In recent years, there's been comparisons made between Wally George and President-elect Donald Trump, with most pointing out how both used a vulgar, combative style to appeal to their audiences. In fact, in 2016 Talking Points Memo referred to Wally George as the "Archeo-Trump". Nikolas Schreck, who was a practicing occultist whose band Radio Werewolf courted controversy, was a perfect fit for Wally George's The Hot Seat and he became a multi-time guest on the program. As such, Nikolas will be able to share his insight into Wally George and his audience. Some of those insights reveal George to be a consumate entertainer with a great deal of talent in terms of being able to provide a circus-like spectacle to his audience. However, Nikolas also notes a dark side to the kind of politics-as-entertainment Wally George brought to the table. In addition to Wally George and the parallels between Wally George and Donald Trump, Nikolas and I will also discuss the Satanic Panic and his analysis of how it connects to QAnon. As someone who was in the thick of the Satanic Panic, Nikolas has a great deal to say on this subject and will detail how he and his former wife have been targetted by QAnon. We will also discuss his analysis of Trump and MAGA, the vulgarian showbiz of GOP politics, the broken American male and the misogyny of right-wing influencers like Andrew Tate, the degeneration of American political discourse, why Schreck views Trump more as a Boss Tweed figure than a fascist, and much, much more.

Originally issued September 15th, 2023In this episode, I talk with Nikolas Schreck about his initiatory journey and what he learned among the way. It is a fascinating discussion that I think finishes with some profound thoughts and comments. Along the way, we also discuss music and the divine feminine.Acclaimed by Austria‘s Evolver magazine as “already a legend in his lifetime‘‘, singer-songwriter, author and film-maker Nikolas Schreck's initiatory application of music, ritual and theater formally began in 1984 when he returned to the West from a life-changing spiritual pilgrimage in Egypt to found the shapeshifting musical ensemble Radio Werewolf, a nine-year sonic magic operation which concluded in 1993. After pioneering early Los Angeles Gothic and deathrock with the band's first incarnation, Radio Werewolf's European phase was hailed by Christopher Walton of the band Endura for “simultaneously pre-empting and giving birth to the dark-ambient and ritual-industrial scene of the 1990's.” Before embarking on his current solo career, Schreck has previously collaborated musically with Zeena, John Murphy, Kingdom of Heaven and Sir Christopher Lee, whose first album he produced.Schreck's books include The Manson File: Myth & Reality of an Outlaw Shaman, Demons of the Flesh: The Complete Guide to Left-Hand Path Sex Magic (written with Zeena Schreck), The Satanic Screen, and Flowers from Hell. He is the director of the 1989 documentary Charles Manson Superstar, and has appeared in several films, including Mortuary Academy and Usher. Nikolas Schreck fills in the gaps on Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme, Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, Leslie Van Houten, Linda Kasabian, and Charles “Tex” Watson. Django Nudo and the Smut Peddler welcome you backwards in preparation for this week's big topic: satan(ism). First there is a quick plug for the last Everyman Cult Tuesday screening of the year, with Christmas special "Silent Night, Deadly Night" (1972) showing on 7 December across UK, introduced by horror guru Kim Newman. There is the Nikkatsu Sueden Porunu films showing in Stockholm. We also welcome The Chilean, our latest edition to the Cultpix Team, who will be helping us with marketing and understanding the mindset of Cultpix members as part of our quest for world domination. Satan, satanism, its portrayal in popular culture and the virulent satanic panic in the US in the 1980s is the main focus of today's episode. We are fortunate to have the knowledgable Carl Abrahamsson in the studio to talk us through all this. Carl is multi-hyphenate: writer, publisher, musician and film-maker, as well as self-confessed satanist. Following on from the films, psychopaths and social changes in the US in the 1970s, we trace the emergence of the satanic panic in Reagan-era US, with hysterical tabloid documentaries such as Geraldo Rivera's "Devil Worship - Exposing Satan's Underground" (1989) that links all kinds of lurid murders and crimes to satanist.  Carl makes the point that there was a great deal of projection going on from established religion, covering up its own child abuse scandals at the time. It was easier to blame New Age trends in Mondo-style docus like "The Occult Experience" (1985) or "Devil Worship - the Rise of Satanism" (1989). We discuss the interesting characters in the interview documentary "The First Family of Satanism" (1989) that pitted radio evangelist Bob Larson against Nikolas Schreck and his wife Zeena, daughter of Anton LaVey (founder of the Church of Satan). Larson is almost the more interesting one with his freak-show style call-in radio show, where he vented against satanism, rock music and role playing games, when he wasn't performing exorcisms (sometimes with his daughter!), even over Skype for $295 a pop. Carl then talks us through his own journey out of the closet as a confirmed satanism, which is not so much about worshiping the Devil as a form of radical individualism. His music and particularly the song "Sweet Jayne" about the relationship between Jayne Mansfield and Church of Satan founder Anton LaVey. This led to Carl befriending LaVey and winning his trust, which in turn led to the documentary "Into the Devil's Den" (2019) which features LaVey and several other key figures such as Kenneth Anger. Films like this and "Hail Satan?" (2019), which in the words of The Guardian, "portrays the Satanic Temple as a voice of reason and humanism in the US. Has the time come to rehabilitate the dark lord?"This is an important question, because even though the satanic panic in the US of the 1980s is over - though not before dozens of innocent people went to jail for decades - new and even nuttier conspiracy theories from QAnon are surfacing. We end by playing "Sweet Jayne". Hail the Dark Lord, indeed.

This leads him to examining the history of Hollywood and its dark side with a particular focus on Roman Polanski, the Manson Family, the Tate-LaBianca murders, the mobbed up lawyer Sidney Korhsak, Jeffrey Epstein, and other sordid goings on in tinsel town that he believes may relate to cultural psyops. Ever since the shockingly gruesome Tate-LaBianca murders of August 1969, The Manson Family have cast a long shadow over not only the 60s counterculture and its images of free loving, acid-dropping, Establishment challenging, hippie flower children but also American culture as a whole. Rather than ushering in the fabled Age of Aquarius where peace and love would reign supreme, it appeared that the promise of "The Psychedelic Sixties" had ended with an unimaginably wanton act of violence and bloodshed. The clarion call of Dr. Timothy Leary and the Woodstock Generation to "Turn On, Tune In, and Drop Out" seemed to take on a much more sinister meaning as Charles Manson and those who lived by his side in the desert mountains of California became popular culture's de facto avatar for evil in the latter 20th century. Coupled with the January election of President Richard Nixon, who successfully campaigned under on "Law and Order" platform that promised reaffirm the Establishment status quo, the saga of the Manson Family spelled the grim end of an era and its dashed hopes for the so-called Age of Aquarius. Perhaps that is why, a half century later, the faint echoes of the Manson Family and the Tate-LaBianca murders reverberate within popular culture. Through the decades there's been endless documentaries, movies, TV shows, books, and more either inspired by, based on, or seeking to make sense of it all. There's even been alternative theories proposed to challenge prosecutor's Vincent Bugliosi's Helter Skelter telling of the whole twisted affair. Some, such as the controversial Nikolas Schreck, have argued that the Tate-LaBianca murders were a drug burn gone awry. Others, most notably the late conspiracy-minded radio host Mae Brussell, have speculated that the murders were a plot to crush the counterculture and that the Manson Family were products of the CIA's Cold War-era mind control experiments with the now infamous MK ULTRA project. Ed Sanders, the poet and counterculture icon of the seminal hippie folk-rock band The Fugs, attempted to draw a connection between Manson and a little-know cult with the ominous name The Process Church of the Final Judgment in his 1971 chronicle of the case THE FAMILY. And, of course, there are those who believe that Bugliosi's account of the events, as detailed in his 1974 best-seller HELTER SKELTER, remains the definitive final word on the whole matter. After all these years one could be forgiven for thinking that Charles Manson's death on November 19, 2017 from a cardiac arrest would be the nail in the coffin for his and The Manson Family's hold on the popular imagination. And yet multiple major motion pictures since have been based on, inspired/influenced by, or involved the Manson saga including the Hillary Duff-starring THE HAUNTING OF SHARON TATE, heavy-metal-rocker-turned-horror-filmmaker Rob Zombie's gory 3 FROM HELL, American Psycho director Mary Harron's CHARLIE SAYS, and, of course, Quentin Tarantino's ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD. Additionally, new books continued to be published on the subject including CREEPY CRAWL: CHARLES MANSON AND THE MANY LIVES OF AMERICA'S MOST INFAMOUS FAMILY by Jeffrey Melnick, which offered a cultural study of the Manson Family and its influence on the American psyche to this very day, and CHAOS: CHARLES MANSON, THE CIA, AND THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE SIXTIES by journalist Tom O'Neill. The latter book challenged Vincent Bugliosi's generally accepted HELTER SKELTER by delving into alternative theories related to the Family as well as the murders and became something of a sleeper hit covered by outlets such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Guardian upon its publication in the summer of 2019. What is it the continues to fascinate so many about The Manson Family? Why the continued popularity of alternative theories to explain the murders? What, if anything, does the Family and the Tate-LaBianca murders mean in the context of the peace and love counterculture of the 1960s? Filmmaker Lonnie Martin attempts to address these questions without finding the elusive answers in his fascinating and engrossing new movie THE LAST OF THE MANSON GIRLS. Based on the essay "My Acid Trip with Squeaky Fromme" by late counterculture legend and self-described "investigative satirist" Paul Krassner, THE LAST OF THE MANSON GIRLS follows Krassner's (played here by Elliot Kashner) attempt to investigate and unravel The Manson Family saga after being spurred on by the conspiracy-minded California radio fixture Mae Brussell (Robin Reck). Despite his admitted skepticism toward Brussell's theories, Krassner find himself drawn into chasing the phantoms of the Manson story and, in an effort to find them, decides to spend an acid-tripping day with the three remaining members of Charlie's Family that aren't confined to a cold cell: Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme (Jen Bevan), Sandra Good (Cindy Marie Martin), and Brenda McCann (Sarah Taurchini). Alternately scared and attracted to the trio, Krassner ends up not only chasing phantoms but also getting to know THE LAST OF THE MANSON GIRLS and confronting his own demons in the acid-drenched process. Elliot Kashner as Paul Krassner hanging out with THE LAST OF THE MANSON GIRLS (Cindy Marie Martin, Jen Bevan, and Sarah Taurchini) Cindy Marie Martin as Sandra Good in THE LAST OF THE MANSON GIRLS Jen Bevan as Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme in THE LAST OF THE MANSON GIRLS The director of THE LAST OF THE MANSON GIRLS, filmmaker Lonnie Martin, joins us to discuss the movie, its character-driven nature, the role of gender in the movie, how the male gaze plays into the story, how it started out as a Master's thesis, his correspondence with Paul Krassner, what interested him about "Squeaky" Fromme as a primary subjective for a narrative film, working with the actors and actresses on who starred in it, the film's major themes, the Sixties counterculture, and much, much more. On this edition of Parallax Views, the controversial Nikolas Schreck returns to discuss his latest musical work, The Illusionist, and the upcoming updated (and final) edition of The Manson File as well as expressing his uncensored opinions on the Church of Satan's Anton LaVey, conspiracy theories, the alt right, and the far-right's resurgent interest in the work of neo-Nazi extremist James Mason. We begin the conversation by discussing Nikolas' new album The Illusionist, available from Records Ad Nauseam, including the outer space influenced psychedelic single "The Futura Model" and "This Hideous Thing", Nikolas' final musical exploration of the Tate-LaBianca murders. From there we discuss the dark humor found in Nikolas' musical projects over the years and his collaboration with the cult musician John Murphy. Additionally, Nikolas expresses the influence that musicians like Nico and crooners such as Russ Columbo have had on his musical endeavors. In this regard we also discuss Nikolas love of "outsider" musicians like Roky Erikson and Daniel Johnston. During this segment Nikolas explains his issues with the term of "outsider musician". Nikolas Schreck and his drummer Heathen Rae Nikolas Schreck and his bassist Ohnesorg Nikolas Schreck and his keyboardist Winfried Strauss We then delve into the fiction and reality of the Tate-Labianca or Manson murders as outlined in the upcoming, final updated edition of his book The Manson File. In particular, we discuss what Nikolas consider to be the real reason for the murders, namely a drug deal gone bad. Interestingly, the Hollywood Reporter recently featured a protégé of Jay Siebring (a victim in the Tate murders) saying this was the true reason for the murders. Nikolas also notes that, based on his research, Roman Polanski is a much darker figure in the Manson story than recognized and argues that Sharon Tate had wanted pleaded with him to move from Cielo Drive before the murders took place. Additionally, Nikolas delves into his relationship with Charles Manson as well as Manson's criminality and role in the murders. He argues, however, that at the heart of the Tate-LaBianca murders is actually Manson Family members Tex Watson and Linda Kasabian, the latter of whom was the only family member to escape prison. Ultimately, Nikolas says, the Tate-LaBianca murders may be even darker than the story told by Vincent Bugliosi in Helter Skelter and in fact reveal a dark side of Hollywood years prior to the scandals of Harvey Weinstein and Jeffrey Epstein. In this regard, Nikolas and I discuss the seemy underbelly of the record industry in that era and Nikolas' thoughts on the relationship between Manson and the Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson. Sidney Korshak, a mob-connected lawyer who some considers one of 20th Century America's "Hidden Power Brokers", factors greatly into Nikolas' research into both the Manson Murders and the JFK assassination We go on to use the Manson saga as a launching point for a conversation about America's hidden history. We begin by discussing the figure of Lawrence Schiller, who has a connection to not only the Manson story but also the JFK assassination (which Nikolas will be writing about in a novel format with The Dallas Book of the Dead). This leads us into an examination of the mob-connected lawyer Sidney Korshak, who may well have been one of America's hidden power brokers in the 20th century. This brings us around to a conversation of conspiracy theories and conspiracy culture. In particular, Nikolas comments on and criticizes the recent , popular Manson book CHAOS by Tom O'Neill and the works of Mae Brussell and Dave McGowan. This leads us into a conversation about the pornographic nature of conspiracy theories like the supposed MKULTRA sex slave program "Project Monarch" and Maury Terry's Ultimate Evil, a book which posits that the Son of Sam murders were perpetrated by a cult known as the Process Church of the Final Judgment. Nikolas takes issues with these theories and argues that they actually aid the conservative agendas of right-wing conspiracists like the late ex-FBI agent Ted Gunderson and their views of the 60s counterculture. This segues into a conversation about Anton LaVey. Nikolas, who was formerly married to LaVey's daughter Zeena, paints a very negative picture of the Church of Satan founder. He argues that LaVey showed little interest in combating the Satanic Panic of the 1980s and instead left that work to his daughter Zeena. Additionally, he says that LaVey constructed a false image around himself and, more shockingly says that the Church of Satan attained funding from a convicted child sex offender and San Francisco real estate tycoon that abused one of LaVey's family members. Moreover, Nikolas says that LaVey looked the other way in regards to this tycoon's abusive behaviors. Nikolas also addresses LaVey's connection to Ragnar Redbeard's Might Makes Right, a book that has come under renewed scrutiny due to its apparent influence on the Gilroy Garlic shooter. In his final summation, Nikolas argues that LaVey was a psychologically wounded individual driven by opportunism who engaged in abusive behaviors and recommends the film noir Nightmare Alley to better understand the image LaVey wanted to project of himself. We conclude the conversation by discussing James Mason, a Satanic-neo-Nazi-turned-Christian-neo-Nazi who promoted lone wolf terrorism in a book called Siege. Due to Mason's interest in Charles Manson he came into contact with Nikolas Schreck, who featured him in his documentary Charles Manson Superstar. I give Nikolas an opportunity to address Mason in light of Siege's renewed popularity amongst a segment of the alt right. During this portion of the conversation Nikolas gives his thoughts on the incoherence of Mason's philosophy, the absurdity of lone wolf terrorism, and the misogynistic elements driving the alt right. Nikolas makes strong criticisms of the alt right during this segment of the discussion while also making clear that he is not a fan of either side of the culture war. In his estimation the entirety of the culture war, as well as the rise of conspiracy theories, are representative of a kind of apocalypse, but one less pretty than those seen in dystopian cinema and literature. In closing Nikolas gives his thoughts on the trajectory of corruption in Hollywood and elsewhere. SUPPORT PARALLAX VIEWS ON PATREON! WHERE YOU CAN HEAR... Author Nikolas Schreck (The Manson File) joins S.T. Patrick for the third time to discuss Charles Manson and the Tate-Labianca murders of August 1969. This year was the 50-year anniversary of the murders and Schreck hosted a sold-out talk in Los Angeles in August. In this episode, Patrick asks Schreck about the history of his communication with author Tom O'Neill, his perspective on O'Neill's book Chaos (including its breakthroughs and faults), the media and Manson (50 years later), the wide-scale dissection of Vincent Bugliosi and the farce known as the Helter Skelter narrative, Schreck's thoughts on Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (and what Schreck believes was hidden within), and the continuous public interest in the case. Patrick and Schreck also fielded questions from The Education Forum about Bugliosi's duping of Susan Atkins, whether Manson or anyone had been to the Cielo Drive house before or after the murders took place, the Patricia Krenwinkel-William Garretson rumor, Rudy Altobelli, Schreck's thoughts on Nuel Emmons's Manson In His Own Words, whether Manson ever discussed Reeve Whittson with Schreck, and much more. As usual, Schreck proves why he is one of the foremost experts on Manson the the Tate-Labianca murders. Schreck has been on the Midnight Writer News Show twice before, both times going over three information-packed hours. To hear those, check out episode 026 and episode 089. Author and director Nikolas Schreck joined S.T. Patrick to discuss the life and legacy of Charles Manson and the former members of his commune. Schreck discusses the update to his mammoth book, The Manson File: Myth and Reality of an Outlaw Shaman. He also addresses the bizarre fight over Manson's remains and estate, as well as how trash TV producers used the funeral for a documentary. When discussing his legacy, Schreck and Patrick talk about how Reagan-era California impacted the story and how it was used by the GOP. Because the story was both hyper-political and a-political all at once, they also address how the Democratic left used Manson as the epitome of the dangerous alt.right. Many other issues are also addressed in this 3 1/2 hour presentation: How did President Richard Nixon's public statement that Manson was guilty almost cause a mistrial? Why is Manson the the "epitome of evil"? Knowing Manson, what can Schreck tell us about him that we may not know?  Did Manson like being a "star"? And what of the Manson Conspiracies - Was the CIA involved in the planning or execution of the case? Was it part of an MK-ULTRA project? Did the CIA supply the drugs to Spahn Ranch? Was there any link between Manson's commune and the murders of Marina Habe and Reet Jurvetson? And what happened to Uncle Darwin Orell Scott? The murdered director Laurence Merrick? Defense attorney Ronald Hughes? What does Schreck think of Dave McGowan's Manson work? And what does he think of Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme's new autobiography? How does Manson's death affect the futures of Leslie Van Houten, Patricia Krenwenkel, and Tex Watson? All of this and more! If you'd like to hear Nikolas Schreck go into detail about the actual murders and the rise of the commune and its inhabitants, check out the last episode we did with Nikolas, episode 26 of the Midnight Writer News Show, which we released on October 28, 2017.
