This week the FM3 get back in the hearse with the Tall Man celebrating Reggie Bannister and the Phantasm films. But something is amiss, the reality the guys know is now filled with even more lurkers, grave diggers, spheres and yep even telekinetic kids. Plus this installment has lots of influences from everyone's favorite horror movies of the time as well as Don Coscarelli's signature weirdness. Sure they might not have fully stuck the landing on this one but Jef, Josh and Brian have faith and know it was almost certainly the pesky studio heads. Regardless the crew has a Phantasm 3 episode coming soon and the Tall Man's silver balls are gonna be swangin' !
Jay sends Mike hurtling through an interdimensional portal and into the loincloth-garbed wasteland of Gor, an '80s Cannon Films sword-and-sorcery “epic” about a nebbish professor transported to another world where he discovers he's aces with a sword. With Oliver Reed chewing scenery, and enough sand, leather and exposed flesh to make Conan blush, Mike tries to determine whether Gor is the gloriously entertaining disaster its reputation suggests or simply a very long walk through the desert. After the review, the guys go big with their Bottom Five Epics before taking a moment to say goodbye to Phantasm icon and cinema's most rogue ice cream man, Reggie Bannister. Then it's back to battle for another round of Dueling Double Bills before Mike reveals the next cinematic punishment awaiting Jay. On the podcast that wields films like deadly weapons, sometimes the real fantasy is believing the movie might eventually get better.
Byrd, Matt and Trev discuss the recent dinosaur film The End of Oak Street from writer/director David Robert Mitchell (It Follows). The film stars Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor as parents who have to protect their family from rampaging dinosaurs when their suburban neighborhood is inexplicably transported into the prehistoric age. We give our spoiler review of the movie (including unpacking the polarizing ending), how it compares to other post-Jurassic Park dinosaur films, what we hope it does for the genre, and more! But first, we pay tribute to the late Screaming Mad George, RJ Kizer, and Reggie Bannister. Relax and enjoy the conversation!
In honor of the late great Reggie Bannister, The FM3 decided it was just the right time to head over to Morningstar funeral home and pay their respects. A collective favorite and classic horror film the crew couldn't believe they had waited this long to start doing episodes on this trippy ass franchise. Don Coscarelli with a devoted cast & crew with very little money and some crazy ideas truly made their mark in horror and introduced the world to one of the coolest villains and one of the best horror heroes ever! Reggie truly lived and died and lived again by the old saying "Ice cream business in the front, blasting space lurkers in the back". His friend Jody was cool too but he had too much hair maybe was just kicking ass in a dream so does it count? Does it really count? Regardless, listeners get ready because Jef, Josh and Brian are finally dipping their spheres into the Phantasm goo!
This week, we pay tribute to Reggie Bannister and revisit one of our favorite film series with a look at 1998's "Phantasm IV: Oblivion." We talk about the next chapter in writer/director Don Coscarelli's mind-blowing saga, and we celebrate Reggie's legacy as an ice cream man-turned-soldier in a war against the Tall Man's army of the living dead. Listen now.
Associate producer of DAUGHTERS OF THE DUST (1991) and legendary film programmer FLOYD WEBB is back on the podcast with a pair of movies set in Africa, but only one of them is filmed there. It shouldn't be too hard to guess which one. First, Mory and Anta, a pair of young lovers dream of leaving the dusty streets of Dakar in Senegal for their fantasies of Paris in TOUKI BOUKI (1973). Director Djibril Diop Mambéty's visual masterpiece starts out hyper realistic but becomes more hallucinatory as Mory and Anta plan their escape. Emergency guest host Darren Norris says that it feels like somebody is telling you their dream. The image of Mory and Anta riding on a motorcycle with a zebu steer skull attached to the handlebars was recreated by Beyoncé and Jay-Z to promote their 2018 world tour and the movie was named the 66th greatest film of all time on Sight and Sound's Critic's Poll in 2022. Streaming on Criterion and HBOMax. Then Richard Widmark is a Viking conman and Sidney Poitier is a Moorish King and their both after "The Mother of All Voices," a bell made with half of the gold in all the world, in THE LONG SHIPS (1964), an historical epic that's a little heavy on the cheese while being groundbreaking in actually having a Black person portray the ruler of an empire. Directed by Jack Cardiff, the master of Technicolor who was the director of photography of Powell and Pressberger's visual feasts THE RED SHOES (1948), A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH (46), and BLACK NARCISSUS (47) along with John Huston's THE AFRICAN QUEEN (51). Hey, he also shot Rambo and Conan sequels in the 80s. Also starring Russ Tamblyn in Viking hotpants and Rosanna Schiaffino in the outfit that inspired Princess Leia's geddup from RETURN OF THE JEDI. Streaming on tubi. Philena couldn't make it becasue she can't deal with the animal snuff no matter how artfully filmed the graphic slaughter of goats and steers may be, and her dad Greg is on assignment, but so they sent their cousin DARREN NORRIS from the CULTURAL FUTURES EXCHANGE podcast as an emergency guest host! Thanks Darren! CULTURAL FUTURES EXCHANGE does deep dives into pop culture artifacts. Darren and his co-host Jeff recently did a two part episode on the PHANTASM film series that you can listen to pay tribute to REGGIE BANNISTER, everyone's favorite undead-fighting icecream man from all five Phantasm films. (00:00) The guys talk about how the Raiders give their season tickets out in this Raiders poker chip box and how they have real printed tickets, if having real things like that can help people buy tickets, how Gillette doesn't print tickets out at all, how much would it cost to print out tickets, Fred had Bruins season tickets, other Raiders season ticket boxes, getting season tickets, and Michigan State football. (00:18:20.12)(00:33:25.50) WHAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT: The Red Sox went to Toronto to face the Blue Jays where Toronto won 2-1 even with a weird rule that gave the Red Sox one run, and they have now lost 3 straight games. They talk about the confusing play where the Red Sox scored, where a 15 minute delay happened where the umpires had to figure out what was going on. Adley Rutschman is starting tonight. Also, they talk about a man named Reggie Bannister, who passed away and Adam 12 put out a memorial post for him. Also, a caller calls Jon old. This week we're making dreams come true with 1997's throwback creature feature WISHMASTER. Featuring a who's who of horror both in front and behind the camera, the birth of the Djinn makes for a fun romp in the vein of not only 80s splatter horror, but also the classic Universal Monsters of yore. With FX from KNB and appearances from Robert Englund, Tony Todd, Kane Hodder, Reggie Bannister, Ted Raimi, the voice of Angus Scrimm along with an executive production credit by Wes Craven, this is a Dream Team of creatives for a B-movie. Mike, Brian and Devaughn are joined by guest John Seavey of the Half Priced Horror podcast but be careful what you wish for, because dreams can turn to nightmares pretty quick. Also, what's with all the smoking?

Welcome to Waxing the Porpoise, the podcast that dives deep into the unexplored depths of cinema and occasionally the unexplained. This week G-Baby and the Usual Suspect Steve welcome back special guest and friend of the show, Chris of the Mount Molehill podcast to raise the flag and rap about the new Oz Perkins joint setting the world on fire, Longlegs from 2024. Join us as we discuss the Hollywood hype machine and new age marketing tactics employed by the film, did it need more or less Nic Cage, the Port Chester Whooping Crane, and ponder the question is Longlegs a continuation within the Phantasm cinematic universe? The porpoises, midnight companions and keen observers, dance between the world of the real and the supernatural whilst we resist the pull of a hermeneutic spin cycle. And where in the heck is Reggie Bannister when you need him? This fine episode of Death By DVD originally premiered on 4/20/2022Do you know what 4/20 stands for? For a lot of folks it means BLAZE IT! Lets get high! And on 4/20, well, people get high! Boy do they get high. But 4/20 has another special meaning. On 4/20/1999 two young boys murdered 15 of their classmates with deadly weapons, a crime that would briefly shock the nation! On this episode we aren't getting high (yes we are) but we're "shooting" the shit about a movie called DUCK! The Carbine High Massacre which came out a whopping SIX MONTHS after the Columbine High School Massacre! You may want to roll a joint for this episode. You'll need it. LISTEN NOW! Not at horror franchises are built the same, and Phantasm is pretty hit or miss as a rule, but you really have to hand it to Don Coscarelli for doing what he wants, how he wants, regardless of how absurd Reggie Bannister gets or how much studio meddling he has to deal with to make his movies. PHANTASM III: LORD OF THE DEAD (1993) picks up right where its predecessor leaves off but somehow makes even less sense than the original film. While the plot may be inscrutable and most of the acting atrocious, there's a lot of charm in PHANTASM III as well as a lot of yellow mustard, so you know we had a good time watching and discussing regardless of how much headscratching occurred throughout.
