What key figure is often credited with being the mastermind behind “The Jerry Springer Show?” Was there any truth in the accusations that the fights were fake or scripted? Jerry Springer's dull new talk show was relegated to an overnight time slot and the likelihood of cancellation. But when he teamed up with a new executive producer - one with a taste for the sensational - the show evolved into a must-watch television circus. And when guests started punching each other, the ratings went through the roof.  The Netflix documentary series Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action revisits the outrageous talk show, zooming in on the relationship between its affable host and the string-pulling Svengali that - for better or worse - changed television. It brings viewers behind the cameras into the demanding lives of the show's segment runners. And it looks at the effects the show had in the lives of its guests, resulting in broken hearts, broken bones, and even murder. In this episode of You Can't Make This Up, host Rebecca Lavoie interviews former “The Jerry Springer Show” producer Toby Yoshimura. SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action yet, make sure to add it to your watch-list before listening on.  Listen to more from Netflix Podcasts.

Gio needs more extreme things to entertain himself these days. A woman wants advice for her and her husband as they are expecting their first baby. Jerry has his final update, but first Dov is in the studio as we are reminded he had a heart attack in the newsroom 2 ½ years ago. Boomer checks in via text to say the BQE is shut down because of an overturned truck. Gio and Jerry both have stories about trying to pee in a bottle while stuck in traffic. Nick Sirianni was on WIP and was asked about AJ Brown reading a book on the sideline. The Nets won in Portland last night. St. John's beat Georgetown and are now 15-3 and 6-1 in the Big East. The Moment of The Day: Chris Russo gets to meet actor Timothee Chalamat. In the final segment of the show, we talked about the Cowboys and Deion Sanders. Hour 1 The two main names that are out there for the Jets head coach position are Aaron Glenn and Brian Flores. Some Jets fans seem really interested in Matt Nagy. Does his experience in Chicago help him deal with the pressures of being in NY? Boomer wouldn't be disappointed with Nagy and Mike Borganzi as GM. Jerry is here for his first update of the day, but first we talked about Sam Darnold's future with the Vikings. Gio thinks JJ McCarthy will start and Daniel Jones will be the backup. Mike Tomlin met the media to talk about the season. He was asked about teams wanting to trade for him and he said, ‘save your time'. Dan Campbell talked about the upcoming game against the Commanders. Nick Sirianni was on WIP and was asked about AJ Brown reading on the sideline. Jerry went around the NBA and NHL for the locals. In the final segment of the hour, Chris Russo is a huge fan of Timothee Chalamat and the Bob Dylan movie. He was finally invited to the premiere in London and got to meet him. Hour 2 We talked about the Eagles fan who went viral for calling a female Packers fan the worst word imaginable. The internet found his name and where he worked and the guy got fired. But there's another wrinkle that makes it interesting. It turns out, the Packers fans are ‘content creators' with a YouTube channel and the guy wore a bodycam to record footage. We also only see the clip of the Eagles fan and have no idea if they did anything to instigate it. They clearly went to the game to get a reaction from Eagles fans. The woman didn't seem threatened and didn't seem all that mad about it. Gio thinks all involved are ‘scumbags'. Jerry returns for an update, but first Gio is limping because his knee is swollen and he can't bend it. Jerry starts with audio of Mike Tomlin meeting the media to talk about the season. He was asked why he seemed ‘positive'. Like a lot of teams, the Steelers need to find a QB. Matt LaFleur also met the media to talk about the Packers season. Patrick Mahomes has a new baby and got to watch the playoffs in the hospital. Nick Sirianni talked about AJ Brown reading on the sideline. In the final segment of the hour, Gio heard an interview with former NHL player Teemu Selanne with the Spittin' Chiclets guys and he said they always had beers on ice in the locker room after every game. Gio wondered if it was like that for Boomer back in the day. Hour 3 Phil Simms joins us in his regular Wednesday spot and we start with Mike McCarthy departing from the Cowboys. Kellen Moore would be perfect for them because Jerry Jones likes to be more popular than the coach. We talked about Mike Vrabel becoming the Patriots head coach. What happened to Sam Darnold the last 2 weeks? We asked Phil if it's possible for the Commanders to beat the Lions. Has Phil ever seen anybody reading a book on the sideline? We talked about the upcoming divisional round playoff games. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the sounds of Mike Tomlin meeting the media to talk about the season. Micah Parsons took to his podcast to talk about Mike McCarthy not coming back to the Cowboys. Dan Campbell isn't concerned about the ‘what ifs'. We also talked about circus animals. Chris Russo's son, Colin, is on the radio in Florida and was not happy to have to house sit for his dad. He sounds just like his father. In the final segment of the hour, we talked about congestion pricing as we are into week 2 of it. Hour 4 Boomer had to leave for a doctor's appointment, so Gio and Jerry are in there for the final hour. Gio has been watching a reality show on TLC about a 21 year old girl with tourettes called, ‘Baylen Out Loud'. We also talked about the Jerry Springer Show documentary on Netflix. On this edition of Parallax Views, Nikolas Schreck of the controversial cult deathrock/experimental band Radio Werewolf returns to discuss Wally George. For those unfamiliar, Wally George was the host of The Hot Seat, a popular talk show that aired in Southern California in the 80s into the 90s and even the 2000s before his passing. Dubbed the "Father of Combat TV", George provided a carnival-esque show which revolved around his shouting matches with various guests. On-air he presented himself as a conservative firebrand, complete with a John Wayne photo on his desk and an enlarged picture of a Space Shuttle blasting off behind him with the word "USA #1" written beneath. He'd bring on guests he deemed "sickos" and "freakos" including Satanists, marijuana legalization proponents, and, of course, liberals. In other words, Wally George pioneered the "Own the Libs" schtick/gimmick of Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck, and figures today like Ben Shapiro as well as being a precursor to the combative-and-chaotic talk show trash TV format of shows programs like the Jerry Springer Show. In recent years, there's been comparisons made between Wally George and President-elect Donald Trump, with most pointing out how both used a vulgar, combative style to appeal to their audiences. In fact, in 2016 Talking Points Memo referred to Wally George as the "Archeo-Trump". Nikolas Schreck, who was a practicing occultist whose band Radio Werewolf courted controversy, was a perfect fit for Wally George's The Hot Seat and he became a multi-time guest on the program. As such, Nikolas will be able to share his insight into Wally George and his audience. Some of those insights reveal George to be a consumate entertainer with a great deal of talent in terms of being able to provide a circus-like spectacle to his audience. However, Nikolas also notes a dark side to the kind of politics-as-entertainment Wally George brought to the table. In addition to Wally George and the parallels between Wally George and Donald Trump, Nikolas and I will also discuss the Satanic Panic and his analysis of how it connects to QAnon. As someone who was in the thick of the Satanic Panic, Nikolas has a great deal to say on this subject and will detail how he and his former wife have been targetted by QAnon. We will also discuss his analysis of Trump and MAGA, the vulgarian showbiz of GOP politics, the broken American male and the misogyny of right-wing influencers like Andrew Tate, the degeneration of American political discourse, why Schreck views Trump more as a Boss Tweed figure than a fascist, and much, much more.
