Body odour. It's one of those things we all experience, but rarely talk about. This week, how BO became a social taboo, why you shouldn't fear aluminium in anti-perspirants, and whether natural deodorants are as effective as the conventional kind.
Should there be laws about peoples body odour?
We delve into what the skin biome actually is (a whole community living on/in/around our skin!), how a child's microbiome is influenced by birth and breastfeeding. Plus, fascinating insights on how genes influence ear wax and body odor. We also cover how deodorants and antiperspirants can impact skin microbes and finally, why some people are more attractive to mosquitoes than others, linking it to skin microbe-induced kairomones.~MENTIONED IN THIS EP:Overview of microbial species by nicheVisual of ear microbes!Did you know that antiperspirant or deodorant can significantly influence the microbes of your armpit?https://www.livescience.com/health/the-skin-microbiome-could-be-harnessed-as-mosquito-repellent-study-hintshttps://sci-hub.st/10.1016/j.cois.2017.03.011Study summary of the sweaty t-shirt experiments~Reach out to the Nuanced Naturopaths here! Provide your feedback here. Send me a Text Message. In this episode, Mike discusses the case law classic R. v. Stonefish, 2019 ONCA 914 where a police officer, after stopping a motorist for an equipment violation, smelled the odour of burnt marihauana and saw a green leafy substance in the car's console. The motorist was then arrested for possessing a controlled substance and police opened the car's hood to discover a stash of cocaine in a Ziploc bag valued at between $11,000 — $18,000 on the street. Was opening the car's hood lawful as an incident to the drug arrest for possession of this small amount of marihuana? Or did it exceed the scope of the common law power? Mike looks at these and other questions. Thanks for listening! Feedback welcome at legalissuesinpolicing@gmail.com
Provide your feedback here. Send me a Text Message. In this episode, Mike discusses the New Brunswick Court of Appeal decision R. v. Gallant, 2024 NBCA 135 where a police officer applied for and received a warrant to seize and analyze blood samples taken by hospital staff for medical purposes. The affiant's ITO referenced police reports from two other officers as a basis for their reasonable grounds to support the warrant. This included (1) the circumstances surrounding a serious accident as reported to an officer by another driver and (2) the very strong odour of alcohol coming from the accused's breath as detected by an officer accompanying him in the back of an ambulance on the way to the hospital. Did the affiant's grounds supply a sufficient basis for the search warrant? And what sort of test does the reviewing judge use in deciding whether the authorizing judge could have issued the warrant? Thanks for listening! Feedback welcome at legalissuesinpolicing@gmail.com
Amelia Macho chats to Functional Ecology author Patrick Finnerty about his recently published research article "Odour information enables patch choice by mammalian herbivores from afar, leading to predictable plant associational effects". The team demonstrated that elephants can make patch choice decisions from afar using plant odour cues alone, and that these decisions lead to predictable associational effects on the susceptibility of high-quality focal plants to be being eaten. They also used a new method to reduce an entire complex odour profile of a low-quality plant species and reproduce this odour information artificially. This simplified odour set was as effective as real low-quality neighbours in shaping elephant patch choice and subsequently providing associational refuge to the focal plant. This research could offer a new tool to influence herbivore foraging decisions, with implications for wildlife management and conservation, including plant protection. I really enjoy spending time in a small park nearby. For me, it's a kind of mini urban oasis where there's space for nature, where no traffic is actually allowed, with a few exceptions, and where fortunately there aren't very many people. The other day I came across an elderly gentleman smoking his tobacco pipe. As the park allows you to walk in circles, i.e. do a kind of lap, I passed the spot where I met him again after a while. The smell of his tobacco pipe was still in the air. I didn't see him again. For me, it is an image of how we can or do leave traces in encounters with other people, whether we want to or not. Odour or stench? It's often up to us. When you deal with others today, think of this example and act with the awareness that what you do and say leaves a mark. And all this arises in your thoughts and in your heart. I wish you an extraordinary day!

Much like your fingerprints, your body odour is totally unique to you. It varies from person to person based on the chemical makeup of their sweat, which, believe it or not, is actually odourless on its own. Sweat only starts to smell when it comes into contact with bacteria on our skin. Our distinct scent depends not just on this skin microbiome but also on factors like sex, age, genetics, and hormone levels. Our body odour can change at different times in our lives; for instance, during pregnancy due to hormonal shifts. What kind of foods could be impacting my body odour? What else can I do besides adapting my diet? What if I try all that and I still have BO? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! George's Pond is a popular swimming hole in St. John's. But lately, some swimmers say there's an unpleasant smell wafting from the pond's surface. What's causing the odor? And is it cause for concern? Our Morning Show reporter Darrell Roberts was curious, so he enlisted the help of two scientists from Memorial University.
Have you ever wondered what your unique body odour says about you? Turns out, quite a lot! From your health to your genetics, we can learn a lot from taking a whiff of your odour. Your scent is a complex mix of information, and we humans are pretty good at reading it. So, what secrets are revealed from our scent, and why do we mostly choose to ignore them? Researchers believe scent production is mostly determined by our genes. In a study published in Chem Senses by Craig Roberts and colleagues, participants had to match T-shirts that smelt the same after sniffing them. They matched the T-shirts of identical twins, meaning their scent was very similar, and those sniffing had quite an accurate sense of smell. Agnieszka Sorokowska, an expert in human olfaction, says this means "we might be able to detect genetic information about other people by smelling them." But it's not all about your genes. In another twin study called 'The Discrimination of Human Odour by the Dog', a dog could distinguish the odour of identical twins living apart. So, your environment can change how you smell, but it might take a dog's sensitive nose to detect it. Even your health can change how you smell. In a study called 'The Scent of Disease', the BO of someone with diabetes was associated with rotten apples, while those with scurvy had sweat described as 'putrid'. Odour research has also helped to train dogs to detect illnesses such as cancer by scent alone. Do humans use any of this information? King Louis XIV of France was known to douse his palace in fragrance, perhaps to mask the stench of poor personal hygiene. This trend continues today – many of us cover our natural body odour with sweet or floral-smelling perfumes, and in the process, we may be losing the opportunity to learn more about each other and the world. Maybe it's time to drop the deodorants and pleasant aroma of your favourite perfume and let your natural scent waft around, sending the signals that your body wants to emit. 词汇表body odour 体味,体臭take a whiff 闻一闻scent 气味sniff 闻,嗅sense of smell 嗅觉olfaction 嗅觉distinguish 分辨BO (“body odour” 的首字母缩写)体味,体臭putrid 腐烂的,腐坏的douse 向…

Did you know that each of us has a truly unique body odour, which is influenced by a mix of genetic, hormonal, age-related, environmental, and lifestyle factor? And your diet plays a role in shaping your natural scent. Some foods have their own noticeably strong odours, like garlic or onions for example, and can in turn cause us to sweat more. The same goes for spices and chili, which makes sense given how hot they are. If you eat a lot of turmeric, you may notice a tangy aroma emanating straight from your skin pores, caused by an uptick in sweat acidity and the presence of a molecule called carvone. Is there anything else that could explain a change in odour? Are there any foods that can improve body odour? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! You've probably heard the name Casey Anthony but do you know what she did? This episode Journey tells us all about who Casey Anthony is and what she is suspected of doing. Spoiler - no one actually knows what she did, including herself which is a fun little twist. Rebecca then educates us on what odour analysis consists of and how it played a role in this case, even though it is not a court approved science. So join us this episode to learn what makes up smells and what this 22 year old mother may have done. Interested in learning more about when WTF releases new episodes, contests, and more? Did you know that being attracted to someone's body odour via smelling a T-shirt they've worn for 14 days without showering (from a selection of smelly strangers, by the way) and then producing a child with that someone, could be great for your hypothetical kid's health, immune system and longevity? And more broadly, great for the proliferation of the species? And yes, that 14-day stench-fest study is actual research. Did you also know that people spend more money shopping when they've recently had coffee (and that some companies exploit this)? And that judges are less likely to grant parole when they're hungry (just before lunch)? Did you know that your taste buds change (often dramatically) over time? Or that 25% of people are genetically wired to hate broccoli? Did you know that our behaviours and environment (and maybe our thoughts) can change the way our genes work (for good or bad)? Fascinating chat. Again. Dr Bill is a Professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana, who specialises in Molecular & Cell Biology but his broad science knowledge is vast and luckily for us, entertaining. Enjoy. authorbillsullivan.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Birds have fled, humans want to leave and even the midges have gone - Christchurch's damaged waste water plant is driving everyone away with its horrendous stench. The plant's oxidation ponds double as a wildlife reserve and are now also one of the worst causes of the smell. Niva Chittock went to check it out.
