Welcome to It's A Wonderful Podcast! IT'S NOIRVEMBER 2024 and Morgan and Jeannine have five episodes for the month, covering the vast array of Film Noir, in the way only they can! We love Noir more than anything else on this show! The series ends with a brutal cop's redemption tale as a gruffer than gruff Robert Ryan is sent away by his police chief to help with a murder trial in the snow-covered countryside, where he meets Ida Lupino, a blind woman who softens him in Nicholas Ray's ON DANGEROUS GROUND (1951)! Evan is off this week (doubtless watching PLANES, TRAINS, AND AUTOMOBILES), so Megan and Dave take on KNOW YOUR PLACE (2:19) and THE BLACK SEA (35:29) as a duo. And as with many weeks, the movies we choose are linked thematically (often accidentally). In this case, both films tackle characters with feelings of being outsiders. In KNOW YOUR PLACE, Robel (Joseph Smith) balances being a typical American teenager with the familial demands of being the child of Eritrean immigrants, and he navigates the emotional and physical fallout that comes with feeling stuck between two competing sets of demands. And in THE BLACK SEA, Khalid (co-director Derrick B. Harden) travels to Bulgaria from Brooklyn and finds himself completely out of place - until he discovers he makes the locals happy by opening a cafe that serves Matcha tea. (It's more dramatic - and comedic - than that, and we cover all the ins and outs in our conversation.) Over on Patreon, we watched ON DANGEROUS GROUND, a classic noir film from 1951, to celebrate Noirvember.

His formal introduction to film music began at age 7 with John Williams' SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE in the late 70's and it opened the flood gates for his love of film music. Amer has written for Lukas Kendall’s Film Score Monthly, Len Mullinger’s Film Music on the Web as well as other internet based film music review websites. Amer’s favorite composers are John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, John Barry, Miklos Rozsa, Maurice Jarre and of course Bernard Herrmann. Herrmann’s music from Alfred Hitchcock’s PSYCHO and VERTIGO had a profound effect on him and was quick to embrace the works of legendary Golden Age composer. In this first part of Cinematic Sound's celebration of Bernard Herrmann's 100th anniversary, (which was actually last year - Bernard Herrmann was born on June 29, 1911 - so we are a little late to the party, big whoop, wanna fight about it?) Amer will be exploring, among other things, Herrmann's career with legendary directors Orson Welles and Alfred Hitchcock and presenting music from THE SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD, ON DANGEROUS GROUND, THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS, NORTH BY NORTHWEST, VERTIGO, 5 FINGERS, THE SNOWS OF KILIMANJARO and THE GHOST AND MRS. Nicholas Ray is now one of my top ten favorite filmmakers of all time. I had seen REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE when I was younger, but it wasn’t until recently that I went back to check out about a half a dozen of his films back-to-back. I realized the more that I watched, the more I responded to his work thematically. Joining me once again to talk about this legendary director is returning guest Sergio Mims, one of the smartest critics I know. And boy does he have some stories to share throughout our conversation that made my jaw drop. We go through several titles including THEY LIVE BY NIGHT, IN A LONELY PLACE, ON DANGEROUS GROUND, JOHNNY GUITAR, REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE, and BIGGER THAN LIFE.  Sergio also mentions a couple of other films worth seeking out. Nicholas Ray has lead quite the life, and we dive into a lot regarding the man and his movies, both on-screen and off.  I really think you’ll enjoy this one, even if you’re not familiar with the man’s work.  00:00 – 05:13 – Introduction 05:14 – 19:14 - Introduction with Sergio 19:15 – 20:04 - Director Song 20:05 – 52:14 - They Live By Night, In A Lonely Place 52:15 – 01:13:19 - On Dangerous Ground, Johnny Guitar 01:13:20 – 01:58:27 - Rebel Without A Cause, Bigger Than Life 01:58:28 – 02:17:23 - Top 3 Films / Outro I will be taking a couple weeks off from this podcast.  When I return it’ll be in mid-late September alongside Chris Olson, as we explore the work of another legend: Roger Corman!  Until next time, please send your emails to directorsclubpodcast@gmail.com. So opens "The Hitch-hiker" a film directed by our director of the month Ida Lupino. Ida Lupino was a very talented actress, writer, producer, studio owner, and director. Starring Edmond O'Brien, Frank Lovejoy, and William Talman it tells the story of a killer on the run and two men that have the unfortunate luck to cross paths on the way to a fishing trip in Mexico. A tight tense film that foreshadows later films like "The Hitcher". We'll talk more about Ida Lupino next week as we watch "On Dangerous Ground" a film that she both starred in and co-directed, though the latter role was uncredited at the time.
