The 1980s served as the home to many great horror films but it was also a decade defined by sequels, especially when any movie found success with theater goers. The immense popularity of “A Nightmare on Elm Street” in 1984 led New Line Cinema to immediately shift gears to a sequel that would ultimately be released less than a year later. Unfortunately, original director Wes Craven declined to return despite being offered the gig because he found the script by writer David Chaskin just too ridiculous and he wanted no part of the next film in the franchise. That's when “Alone in the Dark” director Jack Sholder took over the project and he cast a relatively unknown young actor named Mark Patton in the lead role in a gender bending swap from a final girl to a final boy. Upon its release, the film received mixed reviews from critics with some praising the performances from the new cast with others pointing out the overtly homoerotic themes that highlight nearly every major scene in the movie with one publication eventually calling the sequel “the gayest horror film ever.” Set five years after the original film, Jesse Walsh and his family move into the infamous house where Nancy Thompson was once terrorized in her dreams except this new teenager is actually fighting off Freddy Kreuger from taking over his mind, body and soul…In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we're going to do some pushups and make sure the bird cage is locked as we review the 1985 sequel “A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge”…

Episode Notes In this episode of Last Year's Horror, we're talking about the 2020 documentary, Scream, Queen! My Nightmare On Elm Street. It was directed by Roman Chimienti and Tyler Jensen, with voiceover work written by Michael Beard, Clint Catalyst, and Leo Herrera. The film follows actor Mark Patton's journey from his time as a young, closeted gay man in a repressive hometown to his rise as a leading actor in Hollywood and his subsequent disappearance after the release of the controversial and wonderfully gay (and possibly homophobic?) sequel to A Nightmare On Elm Street, A Nightmare On Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge. Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street is a horror film documentary with a lot to say. Focusing on the experience of actor Mark Patton, who starred as Jesse in A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge, it explores the impact on the actor of the gay panic response to the homoerotic themes and imagery of the film. Patton's candid and pained reflections on homophobia in Hollywood, and the wider world, in the era of AIDS and religious lobbyists targeting gay rights, form the spine of this emotional film. Directors Roman Chimienti and Tyler Jensen also features the contrast of 'Freddy fans' who mock the perceived gay content of the film with advocates reclaiming both Freddy's Revenge, and Mark Patton, as an icon for queer cinema. Stevie and Emmet discuss the film and the emotional highs and lows of this sensitive subject matter. Also: Stevie's piece Strangeberries as featured in Polly Borland's Wundergym exhibition Emmet recommends listening to Tear Them Apart, with Paul M Yellovich and co-host Beasts of Burden/Blackwood creator Evan Dorkin, and their recent whistle-stop tour of the Friday the 13th franchise Emmet and Tim Molloy have an 'ecological horror story' featured in The Hierograph, which has a Kickstarter campaign Scream, Queen! is available to view on Shudder and on DVD from Umbrella Entertainment in Australia.

Actor Mark Patton (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2: FREDDY'S REVENGE) and co-directors Roman Chimienti and Tyler Jensen “virtually” join Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss their new documentary SCREAM, QUEEN! MY NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET - now streaming wherever you prefer to watch new releases! While being careful not to spoil the events of the documentary, the group discusses the fascinating process of making a movie about a man's life story- only to find that pivotal moments of that on-going story are taking place right before their cameras. From NIGHTMARE 2 originally being looked upon as a controversial slasher sequel due to its infamous homoerotic subtext… to that very same subtext being a huge reason why the film is now celebrated many decades later…to the movie's star (Mark Patton) being “outed” by the film before he was ready to “come out” and coming to terms with his long standing resentment towards the experience… Patton's story is an extremely important one. This is one conversation you don't want to miss - and an episode that you'll only relate to even more if you make it a point to see the film! (Seriously- see it!!) Want more MOVIE CRYPT content? Tyler Jensen & Roman Chimienti are the directorial duo behind Scream Queen, My Nightmare on Elm Street. The documentary dives deep into the story behind A Nightmare on Elm Street 2, a sequel that was notorious for its homoerotic innuendo and lots of ensuing controversy. I really enjoyed this documentary - not only because I'm a horror fan and love Freddy movies but because Scream Queens is unexpectedly emotional journey, that's ultimately a very poignant story about forgiveness and the gay experience Regan-era America during the 1980's. The movie follows actor Mark Patton who was ridiculed for his gay portrayal of the protagonist in Nightmare 2. We follow him throughout the course of a year on the convention circuit interacting with fans and along the way, he confronts the producers & directors who in effect, tarnished his career. All in all, it's a very important watch, so I highly recommend it. ----- Produced by Simpler Media
