Using new archival sources and information from some of the relatives of these forgotten activists, in her new book Rebel Women, Margaret Ward gives us a compelling account of the courageous contributions of over fifty women who were members of Cumann na mBan, or who were attached to the IRA between 1914 and 1924 in County Antrim. The book focuses on members of the Belfast branches and of branches in the isolated communities of the Glens of Antrim. Throughout this period of conflict and partition, women played an essential role in the republican movement. Not only did they organise arms dumps, shelter men on the run, hide money and documents, provide weaponry for operations, care for the wounded and organise effective communication systems, they also paid the price in terms of raids and imprisonment.Welcome to Episode 43 of the Historical Belfast Podcast where it is 5 years (almost to the day) since Episode 1, way back in April 2020. In this new Episode I am joined by Dr Margaret Ward to discuss matters arising from her new book. I was really delighted to get Margaret onto the podcast and I began by asking her to give me a sense of Cumann na mBan particularly in Belfast and what set them apart from the rest of the island.Rebel Women available from Beyond The Pale at the following link: Rebel Women: Cumann na mBan in Belfast and the Glens of Antrim — beyond the pale books – books on Irish society and politicsSend us a textSupport the show
Dr Margaret Ward joins Myles to talk about the untold story of republican women in the north.
The Women Who Risked It All. They defied the law. They risked everything. And they paid with their lives. On 27th February 1601, Anne Line was executed for harbouring a Catholic priest. But she wasn't the only one to suffer in this way. Margaret Clitherow and Margaret Ward were also condemned for protecting outlawed priests in Elizabethan England. In a time when attending Catholic Mass could land you in prison, and sheltering a priest meant a death sentence, these three women stood firm. Their punishment? Torture, brutal executions, and posthumous sainthood. But what drove them to risk everything? Why was harbouring a priest seen as treason? And how did their defiance shape history? Join me as we uncover the powerful and tragic stories of three women who stood against persecution—and paid the ultimate price. Could you have done what they did for your beliefs? Listen now to discover their incredible story. #OnThisDay #TudorHistory #CatholicMartyrs #AnneLine #MargaretClitherow #MargaretWard #40Martyrs #ReligiousPersecution #TudorEngland

Margaret Ward v. State of Alaska
The Tudor Dynasty was notorious for creating religious tension across England as they swayed between Protestantism and Catholicism, depending on who wore the crown. With Elizabeth I on the throne, Catholics were forced to practice their beliefs in hiding. Margaret Ward was empathetic towards the Catholic priests being imprisoned and went so far as to help one of them escape. Known as the 'Pearl of Tyburn', she paid the highest price for another man's freedom.Support the show

So said Michael Collins, yet despite his central role in the development of the Irish nationalism from which the Irish State would emerge, Arthur Griffith has had to settle for a side-line role in the national historical memory. How fair or accurate are accusations of anti-Semitism, misogyny or ‘selling the pass' at the Treaty negotiations? As violence increases in Belfast, women are becoming more politicised. Lady Abercorn visits the city to rally members of the Ulster Women's Unionist Council. Meanwhile the IRA requests the formation of a Belfast branch of Cumann na mBan (League of Women) whose members help gather intelligence and move weapons. And in 33 Carnan Street, off the Shankill Road, Maria Kirkpatrick raises her six children amid riots and protests. Sociologist Claire Mitchell and historian Margaret Ward look at the role of women in these volatile times.

How many people can lay claim to playing a key role in three different 20th century protest movements across the world, each of which largely succeeded in their aims? Margaret ‘Gretta' Cousins, the daughter of a minor court official from Boyle in Ireland and a musician by profession certainly can. The common thread in all of these battles for this driven, feisty activist was the demand for equality for women: Gretta Cousins spent time in jails in Ireland, England and India for her beliefs and remained a catalyst for change throughout her life. As a suffragette she was involved in high-profile direct action in London and Dublin, while in India she not only contributed to the improvement of women's lives but also became the country's first female magistrate. @ Mechanics Institute, Galway (in association with the ICTU & the Irish Centre for the Histories of Labour and Class, NUI Galway) recorded at 8pm on Friday 8 Nov 2019 James Connolly, executed for his part in the 1916 Rising, famously asserted that ‘The cause of Labour is the cause of Ireland; the cause of Ireland is the cause of Labour'. But how did this pan out in the subsequent War of Independence? Members of the trade union movement, the largest civil society organisation in Ireland at the time, were involved in a range of activities, from cultural resistance and industrial action to civil disobedience, and served in Dáil Courts and local authorities as well as in the armed struggle. Yet Labour was left in a relatively weak position in the politics of the consequent Irish Free State. To discuss this conundrum and related matters, History Ireland editor Tommy Graham was joined for a lively discussion by Emmet O'Connor, Margaret Ward and Brian Hanley.
