Journalist and writer Séamus Malekafzali returns to the program to discuss Johnny Mnemonic. Directed by artist Robert Longo and adapted by William Gibson from his own short story, the film was met with lukewarm box office reception and critical derision upon initial release, but has since endured as a classic of 90s cyberpunk aesthetics and startling prescience in its depiction of a 21st century dystopia overrun with corporate malfeasance, an increasingly atomized technological existence, and a global pandemic overwhelming the world's healthcare systems. We discuss the work of William Gibson, pioneer and godfather of cyberpunk; how the film functions as an extension of the worlds he created with his landmark debut novel Neuromancer, and how the film honors both his vision and distinctive style. Then, we praise the incredible cast of characters, led by a deliberately mannered Keanu Reeves performance, with support from Dina Meyer, a crazed Dolph Lundgren, resistance leader Ice-T, and the great Udo Kier. Finally, we discuss the film's breathtaking production design and worldbuiliding, the merits of art that swings for the fences, and the exceptional experience of viewing the film in its Black & White version (as originally intended by Longo, if he had been granted full control of the film). Watch Robert Longo, Keanu Reeves, and William Gibson in conversation for the Black & White release of the film. Bad Cop films that neither of us has seen is this week's theme. Japanese director Beat Takeshi's,  "Fireworks" (1997), was up first and both M&A thought it was excellent and unique in so many ways. A film with very little dialogue, Takeshi has stripped his movie of all excess so not a word or frame is wasted. Very French New Wave. On the other hand, "The Killer Inside Me" (2010) is a bad cop movie that is also really bad. The boys both thought Casey Affleck was miscast as the sociopathic deputy sheriff and the ending is as horrible as it gets. Pure garbage.Next show: Casino movies with "Croupier" (1998) and "Molly's Game" (2017).Thanks for listening!Did we get something wrong? Have your own recommendations? A rekindling of the classic Japanese film series, the film tells the story of a blind masseur with almost supernatural hearing (and swordsmanship) as he crosses paths with a rogue's gallery of assassins, gangsters, and ronin each harboring their own secret grudges and hidden agendas. Popular Japanese filmmaker, Beat Takeshi, infuses this story with as much humor and music as it has violence and pathos, delivering a toe-tappingly brutal tragicomedy.

The story is told with more action rather than a large amount of blood, lending it to be a real crowd-pleaser.Outrage (2010) dir. by Takeshi Kitano. - Outrage is a gangster film by the prolific Japanese director Beat Takeshi which was nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2010. This is not a film for the faint of heart; few films reach this level of graphic violence. Though this film is brutal in its portrayal of a yakuza gang war, the absence of any “good guys” lends immediacy to the action that is rarely found in this genre. Beautiful camera work helps to elevate the cruel and merciless actions of the characters and delivers a shocking but engaging film experience. The Crow, (1994) dir. By Alex Proyas – Instant-classic adaptation of James O'Barr's graphic novel about a man who returns from the dead to right the wrongs that lead to his and his fiancée’s murder. This is the film in which Brandon Lee, rising action star and son of action legend Bruce Lee, was accidentally killed on-set by a faulty prop gun. Despite the tragic death of Brandon Lee, his charisma as an avenging angel continues to draw audiences to this tale of loss and redemption. We’re back with ‘HANA-BI’ (‘Fireworks’)(1997), another Japanese yakuza film. Dylan unwittingly picked another artsy one, however, so get ready for a discussion that goes beyond gangsters, cops, and robbers, and gets more into the impressionistic stylings and choices of this unique film that brought international acclaim to Japanese mega celebrity Beat Takeshi. Though ‘HANA-BI’ offers a challenging first watch, it also contains delicate moments that blossom once given some time and reflection. Serenity is punctuated with sudden violence; a gunshot yields to a splatter of paint on canvas. The city and nature push back and forth against one another as characters wonder what life is really about. Hardly anything is handed to us, the audience, and there’s something intriguing in the beautiful voids created there. Miyazaki fans will rejoice from the opening strains of the soundtrack (composed by the legendary Joe Hisaishi), a sweeping collection of variations on the movie’s melancholy main theme. Wonder what it all means in Episode 25. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/framesandfools/message

Naz reviews “Ghost in The Shell”, the Hollywood interpretation of the famous anime of the same title. Naz, being someone who is technically Asian American, decided to be the arbiter of the matter of the film “white washing” the source material by casting mostly white actors like Scarlett Johansson in the lead role of the major. Naz talks about the casting of his hero Beat Takeshi and how he is the coolest guy ever and shoots a gun like nobodies business. Also, Naz gives an obituary to Vidiots, a video store he used to go to in Santa Monica that unfortunately closed down to move to a more centralized location. It is perhaps the sadness of losing Vidiots that leads Naz to quickly review the film “Life” with a bit of an attitude. We at Wild 7 would like to apologize for that attitude, this is no excuse, but Naz was ten minutes late to "Ghost in The Shell" which made him sad and angry, hopefully that will never happen again because when that happens it is the worst thing in life and it causes us to review films with a bit of a mean spirit.
