Time travel can be enlightening. During this trip through our show archives, we go back to the heals of the 2022 midterm elections. Paul Kendrick is the Executive Director of Rust Belt Rising, a grass roots grooming organization for Democrats.   Their mission is training candidates and their organizations to connect with working families. During this episode of the Crisis Cast, Lissa & Thom probe Paul on what Republicans did to prevent achieving the red wave and how Democrats intended to rebuild the blue wall.  We'll also predict where the next generation of compelling candidates might be hiding.  And more, importantly, the inherent crisis in teaching every day candidates how they can use their personal story to connect with voters. This conversation was originally released November 16, 2022.

The arrest of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. sent the 1960 Kennedy Campaign into overdrive in the last nine days of a historic campaign for the presidency. But what happened during that lead-up to one of the closest elections of the 20th century?  Author Paul Kendrick joins Julian Zelizer in this episode to discuss his recent book “Nine Days: The Race to Save Martin Luther King Jr. and Win the 1960 Election.” Paul Kendrick is a writer and speaker whose articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Chicago-Sun Times, and many more publications. He's also an adjunct professor at National Louis University in Chicago. “Nine Days” is the third book that he has written with his father, Stephen Kendrick.

In this episode of "Dope with Lime," we speak with Paul Kendrick. Paul and his father Stephen’s recent book, Nine Days: The Race to Save Martin Luther King Jr.’s Life and Win the 1960 Election, details King’s imprisonment in October 1960 during the Atlanta sit-ins and the effects that his arrest had on the 1960 presidential election. Rev. Otis Moss Jr., who took part in the sit-ins, calls Nine Days an “urgent, relevant, and historically accurate” book. Kendrick teaches at National Louis University in Chicago, he serves as the Executive Director of Rust Belt Rising, and he served in President Barack Obama’s White House Presidential Office. Today, we will talk with him about Nine Days, Lillian Smith’s connection to the events in October 1960, and more.

Martin Luther King Jr. was sitting in jail, and the presidential campaigns of John Kennedy and Richard Nixon had no idea what - if anything - to do about it. Paul and Stephen Kendrick's new book, "Nine Days: The Race to Save Martin Luther King Jr's Life and Win the 1960 Election," explains how that moment became a watershed. Black voters in southern states had voted Republican, and Richard Nixon boasted of the better connection with some of the most prominent African Americans in the country. But the Kennedy campaign understood that the working class appeal of the Democratic Party could be harnessed to win critical votes in states with large Black populations. Yet, working to get Martin Luther King out of jail was a risk. Both candidates were worried about appearing to go too far in cultivating the support of Black voters, because it could turn off white voters in the south. Indeed, after days of agonizing debate, the Kennedy campaign decided he should call Coretta Scott King and offer support, while also working behind the scenes to free the future Civil Rights icon. Kendrick recounts the 1960 campaign's critical moment, one that would set the tone for politics for the next two generations... and counting.Paul Kendrick is on social media at twitter.com/paulkendrick84His website is paulkendrick.comSupport our show at patreon.com/axelbankhistory**A portion of every contribution will be given to a charity for children's literacy**"Axelbank Reports History and Today" can be found on social media at twitter.com/axelbankhistoryinstagram.com/axelbankhistoryfacebook.com/axelbankhistory
