Black August began in the 1970s to mark the assassination of incarcerated political prisoners like the revolutionary organizer and writer George Jackson during a prison rebellion in California. Black August honors the freedom fighters, especially those inside the walls of our sprawling prison-industrial complex, who, with their vision, tenacity, and deep love for our communities, are leading us toward the horizon of abolition. The Center for Constitutional Rights is proud to be part of a rich legacy of inside-outside organizing to transform material conditions and build a world of collective safety without prisons, surveillance, and police. This Black August we bring to you an episode discussing the ongoing inside-outside organizing taking place to put an end to involuntary servitude in prisons or, more appropriately named, prison slavery. We are proud to represent incarcerated workers in Alabama as they seek to abolish forced prison labor, and we will continue to support them until slavery is banned everywhere, once and for all, in all its forms – not just in the law but in practice. Alabama is one of several states to join the growing movement to abolish prison slavery and involuntary servitude at the state and federal levels. Voters in Colorado, Nebraska, Oregon, Tennessee, Utah, and Vermont have approved similar changes to their states' constitutions to remove the loophole permitting slavery as a form of punishment for incarcerated people.Speakers:Theeda Murphy - Abolish Slavery National Network, Organizer & Operations ManagerMax Parthas - Abolish Slavery National Network, National Campaign Coordinator & Paul Cuffee Abolitionist Center in Sumter, SC., Acting DirectorClaude-Michael Comeau - Promise of Justice Initiative, Staff AttorneyModerator:maya finoh, Political Education and Research Manager

In California, slavery is still legal — as long as you're incarcerated. Incarcerated people are forced to labor for little-to-no-pay under threat of punishment. In November, California voters have the opportunity to change that by voting YES on ACA 8, the End Slavery in California Act. I mentioned the Foresty & Fire Recruitment Program, which was founded by formerly incarcerated firefighters and which helps formerly incarcerated firefighers obtain careers in firefighting upon release from prison. One of the most loved and theologically rich Christmas carols is O Holy Night. But is it just about Christmas? The third stanza of that carol boldly proclaims: Chains shall he break for the slave is our brother And in His name all oppression shall cease. Today we'll talk with Rachel McDonough about how investing relates to this verse. Rachel McDonough is a Certified Financial Planner and a Certified Kingdom Advisor. Faith-based investing continues to grow as a movement, and we're constantly hearing from folks who want to get involved. McDonough says that through our investing we can be ambassadors of Jesus so that investing becomes more than just about risk and return, but it becomes redemptive. McDonough calls attention to the connection between slavery and our investing. When people hear O Holy Night, they don't often think about slavery. And they almost certainly don't think about investing. Some of the companies many of us invest in or from which we buy products benefits from borderline slavery or even literal forced labor overseas. McDonough says it's estimated that the supply chain currently enslaves more people today than at any other time in human history, more than 50 million worldwide. She adds that these are, sadly, people who are indirectly working for you and me because of our shopping and investing patterns. It's a problem that's very hidden deep within the supply chain. Some industries plagued by this evil are the coffee, chocolate, seafood, and textile industries. McDonough says that to address this problem, we have to change the way we invest and shop. It's important for us to research the products we buy and the companies from which we buy them to ensure they're not benefiting from forced labor. On the investing side of the equation, she notes that there are now numerous organizations that offer faith-based investing options that screen to ensure they're operating ethically. If we will care enough to slow down and learn about the options, then we can show love for our exploited neighbors across the world by changing how we invest. We start our episode this week checking in with the movement to unionize Trader Joe's, which hit a setback this week after fierce union busting defeated a union election in Brooklyn. This week we got one step closer to a national rail strike, as the Brotherhood of Railway Signalmen voted down their tentative agreement. A sad story this week of a worker who lost her life at UPS highlights the incredible pressures placed on workers and the toll that takes both physically and mentally. A new report from Documented NY this week highlighted the complicity of the NYC government with rampant wage theft against immigrant workers hired to sanitize the subway in 2020. An investigation by NBC News has highlighted the rampant use of slave labor on US military bases around the world, adding yet another reason to support the end of US Imperialism. Grad student workers at Yale submitted cards this week for what would be one of the largest new bargaining units of the year if successful.  Finally, we check in on the Starbucks Workers United movement, as the company continues to refuse to bargain and the court system continues to show its true nature as a weapon against the working class. Some very interesting and very well informed perspectives on life…appreciate his thoughtfulness and willingness to share and add to the great conversation of our culture. Timeless principles of manhood - because God stands outside time, space, and culture, the principles from God's Word have a universal application to all men everywhere at all times! The principles of what makes a man that are taken from Scripture are as valuable now as they were thousands of years ago when written! What is the percentage of children who are being raised in a home without a father - without a man to train a man, without a man to model “manhood” both to the future generations of men and women?! Older men, great men - are you looking to pass on your wisdom and experience to a younger man who wants to learn, grow, and mature? What role do books play in this process? As mentioned above, we will be rolling out our Quarterly Book Discussions - we'll read a book and then record our perspectives and thoughts on the book - a new book each quarter - and we'll break down the book into four segments, four podcast discussions, to be released on Friday mornings along with our normal Monday T4M episodes. Sign-up for my free 20 day devotional, The Word Before Work Foundations, at http://TWBWFoundations.com “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)William Wilberforce was easily one of the most productive people of all time.First elected to British Parliament in 1780 at the age of 21, Wilberforce was a boy king. At one point in his life, he was officially linked to 69 separate social reform groups throughout Great Britain. Oh yeah, and he was the man chiefly responsible for abolishing slavery across the British Empire and eventually the world. As one of Wilberforce's biographers said, “It's difficult to escape the verdict that William Wilberforce was simply the greatest social reformer in the history of the world.”Early in his career, Wilberforce was ambitious for all the wrong things, namely the accumulation of power, wealth, and privilege. But his ambition was transformed when he submitted his life to the lordship of Jesus Christ at the age of 26, ushering in what Wilberforce referred to as his “Great Change.”Like many young Christians, Wilberforce's knee-jerk reaction to his newfound faith was to abandon his vocation. Seeking advice from his friend John Newton (yes, the great minister who wrote Amazing Grace), Wilberforce expected his minister friend to encourage him to resign from Parliament so that he could truly “live now for God.” But “Newton encouraged Wilberforce to stay where he was, saying that God could use him there. Most others in Newton's place would likely have insisted that Wilberforce pull away from the very place where his salt and light were most needed. How good that Newton did not.”Amen. If Wilberforce's “Great Change” had led to a great change in his work, where would the world be today? Certainly further away from the Kingdom of God.Wilberforce deeply understood what Paul wrote in Ephesians 2:10: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” You see, the very purpose for which you and I and William Wilberforce were created and saved in Christ was to do good works and glorify the Father in the process. Jesus said, “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).Wilberforce's good works included abolishing the abomination of slavery, bringing us one step closer to the Lord's will being done “on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10). His salvation didn't change his occupation, but it did radically change his relationship to his work. Next week, we'll see exactly how.
