The Nets get a day off following the road back-to-back against the Toronto Raptors and Chicago Bulls. In the episode, the Locked on Nets guys look at how the starting lineup has played over the last few games. Spoiler alert: it's been really good. But it has the guys wondering why this was the group that opened the season? They talk about Bruce Brown's impact and how he and DeAndre Bembry combine to play such a unique role on this team. They dive into some lineup combination numbers and talk about what is working and what isn't. Plus, they get into what happens with Nicolas Claxton when/ if he returns and why Paul MIllsap may be struggling. Subscribe to the Locked on Nets YouTube channel Learn more about your ad choices. Matt goes solo to give his two cents on James Harden's slow start. He also shares his game notes from Monday's Wizards-Nets game, touching on Bruce Brown's fantastic transition play, DeAndre Bembry just being a ton of fun, Paul Millsap needing more minutes, the struggling Joe Harris, and a whole lot more! The Locked On Nets guys jump on the podcast to talk more about the first game loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday. They start off talking about Kevin Durant's postgame comments about the game and the team in general. There is very much a sense that it is going to be a work in progress at least to start the season. And then the guys get into some of the lineup decisions from Steve Nash and company. They discuss the starting lineup choice to pair Nicolas Claxton and Blake Griffin, what worked and what didn't. Then they talk about the LaMarcus Aldridge and Paul Millsap pairing in the first rotation as well. Subscribe to the Locked On Nets YouTube Channel Learn more about your ad choices. The Locked on Nets guys are on the podcast directly following the third preseason game for Brooklyn, this one a loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. It was a very sloppy game for the Nets who ended up with 26 turnovers when it was all said and done. It was tough to watch at times. One of the bright spots was the play of Kevin Durant who finished with 23 points on 9-13 shooting in his 26 minutes. But there was plenty to get discouraged about. James Harden continues to look a bit rusty, though he was able to get into some vintage parts of his game. And in general, the Nets had no answer for Joel Embiid early in the game. The guys break down the game all around including the play of Paul Millsap, Bruce Brown, and some others on a packed podcast. The Locked on Nets guys take a look back at the first preseason game of the year against the Lakers for other takeaways. After gushing over the rookies like Cam Thomas in the first game, this time they focus on the veterans who started the game. The first standout was Bruce Brown who already showed some improvement in his game, handling the ball more and even stepping out for a couple of threes early. If he has made major improvements in the offseason then he is ready for a bigger role with the team. Plus, we got our first look at Paul Millsap in a Nets' uniform. It's exciting to think about what he will bring to the team both in a screen-setting role as well as on the boards. Follow the Locked On Nets on YouTube Learn more about your ad choices. It's Part 2 of the Locked on Nets breakdown of the first presser of the year for GM Sean Marks and Coach Steve Nash. The guys look more at the player level for this one, responding to some of the comments the two made about new additions to the team and some guys returning as well. They discuss what Marks said about the return of LaMarcus Aldridge after a heart condition almost forced him into retirement last season. They also look at what Steve Nash had to say about Nicolas Claxton and what his role could potentially be this season. There is Joe Harris, Patty Mills, and Paul Millsap talk as well. It's another packed podcast. And be sure to subscribe to the Locked On Nets YouTube channel! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

With the Nets adding Paul Millsap and LaMarcus Aldridge to their frontcourt, the Locked On Nets guys take a look at how that could potentially affect the minutes for Nic Claxton and Day'Ron Sharpe. Specifically, when it comes to Claxton, it is hard to see a clear path for him to get solid minutes especially early in the season with less opportunity to go around. Even with DeAndre Jordan out of the mix, the frontcourt is almost overloaded with bigs at this point. Adam Armbrecht and Doug Norrie take a look at the situation and what it will mean for the younger guys. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Nets capped off an excellent offseason by making a couple of Labor Day weekend moves in addition to the DeAndre Jordan trade. For starters, they signed Paul Millsap to a veteran minimum contract. It is a fantastic depth-builder in the front court where Millsap will bring veteran experience, the ability to score and stretch the floor as well. He is an excellent defender as well. Plus, they brought back LaMarcus Aldridge after he was medically cleared to once again play basketball. The Nets went from being a little thin at the four and five to loaded with veteran experience and depth. Check out this episode on YouTube. Learn more about your ad choices. It may not be official, but summer is starting to fade away in 2021 as Labor Day has arrived. We can't say that for what's taking place throughout the sports universe. New seasons have started or will begin this week as Episode #212 is locked and loaded for your consumption. On deck: (6:48) In what has been a weird and unpredicatable baseball season, the MLB playoff push goes into overdrive as we're a week into the month of September. How important is it for the Giants to win the division? Will they have what it takes psychologically to go deep in October if they end up hosting the Wild Card Game after leading the NL West all summer long? The NL East is getting interesting as the Braves have come back to the pack. The Phillies and Mets have cut into the divsion lead, but an intriguing week schedule wise could be a true test as they chase Atlanta for the top spot. The Yankees have cooled off after a torrid winning streak. The Mariners have overachieved as they're putting pressure on the teams above them in the AL wild card race. I discuss my over/under win totals as we hit the homestretch and what will Derek Jeter's Hall of Fame speech sound like come Wednesday night in Cooperstown? (45:15) The NFL season is on the horizon. I'll get into the Week 1 storylines, including the release of Cam Newton in New England. The controversy surrounding vaccinated and unvaccinated players coming out of training camp and into the season. The big games on the schedule for the first week. With my 2021 Preview upcoming on Thursday, I'll share a nugget on who my knockout pool pick will be come Sunday. (1:01:41) College football's first week had a quite few good matchups, but most did not live up to the hype. Georgia was stout in their win against Clemson. How that stacks up when it comes to the college football playoff down the road? Alabama was unstoppable, Notre Dame had to hang on to win vs. Florida State. #2 seed Oklahoma holds on win while being the 'road' team at home. Those are some of the games I'll discuss and I'll take a look ahead to Week 2. (1:09:52) The Expendables, ahem, I mean, Lakers are at it again as they bring in ANOTHER reinforcement/mercenary in their quest to keep LeBron James happy for the franchise's 18th championship. The Nets also take a page out of the Expendables, bringing in two players, one who retired suddenly as a member of the team last year (i.e. Lamarcus Aldridge) and one who has lots of postseason experience (Paul Millsap). Plus, the Ben Simmons drama is percolating in Philadelphia as he wants out before the start of the year. Will it happen? Could this be a potential distraction? Who may be involved in trading for the talented, but disgruntled All-Star? (1:17:20) A couple of NHL notes with a new COVID protocol and the players will participate in the Winter Games next year. (1:17:56) The US Open tennis tournament has taken an unexpected twist as FIVE major developments have boiled to the surface over the past few days as the #3 men's player (i.e. Stefanos Tsitsipas) has been surprisingly ousted before the quarterfinals. The rise of 18 year old Carlos Alcaraz as he becomes the youngest player in 58 years to make the quarterfinal round. On the woman's side, another player rising in stature is Laylah Fernandez as she defeats both Naomi Osaka AND Angelique Kerber to thrust herself in the conversation to push for a semifinal or finals berth. The #1 women's player won't be around for a title as she gets bounced from the tournament after holding a comfortable lead against Shelby Rogers. I also get into the emotional press conference of Naomi Osaka and how this could be the last we see of her for quite some time. And then Sloane Stephens shares her experience of the hate and vitriol that's spewed on her social media accounts. (1:33:30) Golfer Patrick Cantlay has won back to back tournaments over the course of eight days. Is this something to cherish or applaud? Or is it because it's not a major, does it not matter? Should we focus in on him being a top level player on the tour? (1:36:32) Former boxing champion Oscar de la Hoya had an upcoming fight this weekend but had to bow out due to contracting the coronavirus. You won't believe who his replacement is scheduled to be. Evander Holyfield. YES! That Evander Holyfield! (1:38:25) And of course, I close out with my Hero and Zero of the Week. The Nets were finally able to trade away DeAndre Jordan, clearing that contract off of their books and saving $47 million in luxury tax as well. They sent him, cash considerations, and a bunch of second-round picks to the Detroit Pistons for Jahlil Okafor and Sekou Dombouya. It was an interesting trade all things considered and can't be seen as anything else but another massive win for Sean Marks and company. Clearing out Jordan and the money paved the way for LaMarcus Aldridge to sign with the Nets and they brought in Paul Millsap as well. The guys will get to those two signings on tomorrow's podcast. Isaiah Thomas, Lance Stephenson and Monta Ellis work out for the Mavs, after a lack lustre off-season in Dallas. Does Luka Doncic win MVP if the Mavs are a top 4 seed in the west? Quickly touching on the Brooklyn Nets with additions in Paul Millsap and potentially LaMarcus Aldridge. Ahmad and Theus are then joined by Memphis Grizzlies and Grind City Media Digital Content Reporter Meghan Triplett to talk upcoming season expectations in Memphis. Tony Allen and Zach Randolph jersey's to be retired. Small market challenges and why the Grizzlies deserve more respect. Does Ja Morant make his first all-star appearance?
With rosters more or less set - though the Brooklyn Nets seem to keep finding dudes to add, somehow - and training camp still a few weeks away, it's a good time to look at where teams stand. This week, ESPN looked at some potential shortcomings for contenders that are perhaps flying under the radar. For the Lakers, it was whether Anthony Davis will embrace playing center. Obviously that's something talked about locally a ton, but it's easy to see how that could be a more granular topic for NBA fans out of market (given how much emphasis has been put on Westbrook's fit or outside shooting, for example). But it does beg the question, how much center is the right amount of center for Davis? Is it about minutes? Timing? Both? And moreover, how much of the conversation should be about the way in which Davis plays, not just the position at which he plays? How about a couple other lower profile concerns around the team (keeping in mind, we're talking entirely about first world issues, here - the Lakers are going to be excellent if they're healthy)? Are they putting too much on Trevor Ariza? What about free throw shooting for the Big Three? And on the flip side, what are some good qualities of this group that perhaps aren't getting enough shine? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: A quick word on Paul Millsap going to Brooklyn, then a look at Davis and the five. How much time does he need to spend there? Is the need more acute this year than last? SEGMENT 2: More on AD at center. Some of the problem isn't where he plays, but how. No matter the position, he wasn't good enough last season. That has to change. Plus, are there other low-key concerns? SEGMENT 3: What about the good stuff that might not be getting the attention it deserves? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!
