Send us a textThis week on the podcast, I sit down with Dexy and Chris to discuss their latest release, their musical journey and more. ****Dark dreampop duo Magic Wands will release a new album entitled Cascades via Metropolis Records. It includes their current single, "Time To Dream,"as well as the previously issued "Hide," "Armour," "Moonshadow," and "Across The Water." “Cascades was born from a fascination with how the past lingers inside us and explores transformation and the spaces where timelines blur into one,” the band explains. Shaped by the spirit of centuries-old poetry, gothic romance, and myth, the album pulses with post-punk and dream-pop sounds, shot through with lingering shadows of the old world, bridging the sound of their 2012 debut album Aloha Moon with more recent releases. Formed in 2008 in Nashville by vocalists/guitarists Dexy and Chris Valentine but now based in Los Angeles, Magic Wands are known for a shimmering, dreamy sound that melds elements of shoegaze, dreampop, postpunk, and goth. Their music utilzes heavily-textured guitars, synth drones, and ethereal vocals to conjure an otherworldly atmosphere, plus song lyrics that are emotionally engaging.  The duo has built a loyal fanbase over the course of five studio albums to date, the most recent of which was Switch (2023). The Chicago native who has been running Voltiv Sound (Los Angeles, est. 2015) released the debut EP “Living in a Fantasy” in Nov 2022, EP2 “Now I Know” in July 2023, and EP3 “Push My Luck” in May 2024. That Solo Life, Episode 280: Magic Wands And Flying Carpets - The Myths And Realities Of PR In This Episode   The understanding about the role of Public Relations can vary widely from being a vanity function to having the ability to save a failing company. In this episode of That Solo Life, co-hosts Karen Swim, APR and Michelle Kane engage in a lighthearted yet serious discussion about the common misconceptions about public relations (PR) and the challenges faced by PR professionals and the businesses they serve. There are things that PR simply cannot fix. Karen and Michelle share their experiences with clients who have high expectations, believing that PR can be a magic bullet for their failing businesses. While PR can certainly help, it cannot replace the need for a solid business foundation, infrastructure, and consistent effort.  Karen highlights the issue of companies that underestimate the value of PR, especially during leadership changes. New CMOs may not recognize the critical role PR plays in maintaining brand reputation and driving customer trust. Without a partnership between PR and marketing, businesses risk losing out on valuable opportunities. Michelle adds that PR cannot compensate for a lack of effort from clients. We need their input and collaboration to create effective strategies. The misconception that PR is a "set it and forget it" service leads to disappointment and missed opportunities. There must be open communication and consistent engagement to achieve the best results. In addition to  navigating these challenges, Karen and Michelle express concern for the well-being of PR professionals who are feeling burned out and disillusioned. The lack of communication and feedback from potential clients can be disheartening, and listeners are urged to foster better communication practices. With Halloween coming up the big question is what are you going to be?! What are you going to dress up as!? Ghosts, goblins, witches, and wizards, so many options! Every costume has accessories. For some costumes we will have wigs, some will need face paint, and some have Magic Wands. Which costumes need magic wands? Witches and fairies were the first 2 that came to my mind. Wizards, sorcerers, and many types of characters have a magic wand as part of their attire and their identity. These magic wands, what do they do? What are they used for? Sometimes to cast spells, good or bad. Sometimes to get a specific result, and sometimes to solve problems! Wouldn't it be nice if we had a magic wand to help us in our day-to-day? To do the dishes, to do the laundry, to cook the meals.  The solutions to our messy problems would be easily solved and then we could get what we want.  I love to use this idea of having a magic wand and pretending with my clients and myself sometimes. I will ask “What if we had a magic wand and we could use it to get exactly what we want, what would that look like?” What does this do? I identified 3 things this helps us do: 1. Tom welcomes back Lobo Tiggre founder and CEO of Louis James LLC. He is the principal analyst and editor of IndependentSpeculator.com and his speciality is in evaluating resource companies. Lobo starts out by explaining the dangers of believing theories that fit one's worldview, but cannot be proven. Tiggre's article "Rationalism versus Empiricism in Securities Analysis" warns against buying into theories peddled by salespeople. He uses the example of central banks buying gold to show how theories can be wrong and hurt investors. He then discusses the example of supply side deficits, and cautions against believing theories of scarcity. He explains why the cost of production does not always act as a floor for commodities, such as copper, during a recession. He cautions against succumbing to theories that sound too good to be true. Lobo discusses the IMF's prediction of a third of the world's economies entering recession in the upcoming year. He voices that there are more negatives associated with the recession than positives in the form of China reopening. The world economy is fragile and there is potential for something to break and cause a new Lehman moment. He also mentions that gold and silver are a good form of insurance during this time of uncertainty and that the ECB may be more hawkish than the Fed in the near future, which could lead to a bearish dollar and bullish gold and silver. Lobo is also bullish on uranium and is of the opinion that the nuclear renaissance is inevitable and that the green agenda cannot be achieved without it. He warns gold bugs to not be discouraged by the lack of performance in 2022 and encourages them to pay attention to inflation rates and the DXY.
