Multitasking, or the art of juggling several tasks at once, is more common than ever before in the workplace. In 2022, a German think tank called Next Work Innovation released a study which showed that knowledge workers are interrupted on average every four minutes during the working day! In a past episode of Do You Really Know, we discussed how our brains manage to cope with multiple demands at once. Suffice to say: it's not easy! It can be really tricky to focus again after a distraction, and many workers believe interruptions negatively impact their productivity and well-being at work. Why is it so important to know how to say no then? How can I learn to say no then? What if saying no is just too difficult? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! The host shares personal anecdotes and metaphors to illustrate the importance of finding a balance between these two qualities. He emphasizes the need for flexibility in order to adapt to challenges and avoid breaking, while also highlighting the value of consistency in achieving long-term growth and success. In this episode, I'm really looking forward to introducing you to Märcelle Pick, a functional medicine practitioner and nurse practitioner who has specialized in women's health since 1983. She's written books related to women's health, adrenal health, as well as weight and nutrition. She's here to talk with us about the risks of using GLP-1 agonist medications for weight loss. Märcelle has a lot of concerns about these medications because they are so new and not well understood, and they're not addressing the underlying cause of weight gain, which is metabolic inflexibility. I feel this is SUCH an important topic to cover, especially at this moment in time when so many of you are hearing about and thinking about taking these medications. That's exactly why I'm excited to share this conversation with an expert to help you in your decision making. "Leave them; they are blind guides." Mt15:14 NIVThere are plenty of good leaders around-don't be afraid to follow them. But what about the "blind guides" that Jesus talks about? Here are some signs to help you identify and avoid them: (1) Inflexibility. True leaders have a teachable spirit and a servant's heart. They rejoice in your growth and aren't threatened by your development. They won't try to "keep you in the nest" when it's clear that you're ready to fly. (2) Elitism. Look out for the "we-alone-are-right" attitude. When someone can't acknowledge and fellowship with other members of God's redeemed family, something's wrong. The word exclusive is often another word for paranoid. (3)Moneygrubbing. Here is God's standard for leadership: "Not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve" (1Pe 5:2 NIV). The Bible also says good leaders are "worthy of double honour" (1Ti 5:17), which means twice as much. But look out for those who teach that you must only sow your seed into their field, and nowhere else. (4) Accountability. Beware of the untouchable, "-am-God's-anointed" types. No matter how gifted we are, we all have blind spots and need to be confronted and counseled from time to time. Solomon said, "Pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up" (Ecc 4:10 NIV). Here is what Jesus said about the religious leaders of His day: "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots.Leave them; they are blind guides. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit" (Mt15:13-14 NIV). When choosing a leader, you don't need a blind prima donna; you need one with a servant spirit.Support the showChanging Lives | Building Strong Family | Impacting Our Community For Jesus Christ!

Money fears are pretty common in divorce. Clients may be afraid they don't know enough about money, won't get enough money or they'll have to give up too much money. Or they might have concerns that their partner will be difficult and they'll have to fight to get what's “fair”. By the way, most of us call “fair” the 4-letter F word in divorce because each person's definition of “fair” is different and it's the source of so much disagreement. In this week's episode, we dive into the first few important steps when working with money fears. When we are able to dial down fear, we also make it possible for clients to be less reactive, more flexible, and more strategic - and that means less conflict and better decisions. We find it so interesting that financial fears are one of the most common instigators of divorce conflict because money is widely known as one of the leading causes of divorce in America. We're taking people who likely couldn't agree about money in their marriage and asking them to make big decisions about money during their breakup. It just doesn't seem like a recipe for success. We review working with clients to establish a post-divorce budget and running through possible marital property settlement proposals. The key to minimizing money fears is a combination of understanding the divorce process, financial literacy, and values based decision making. When clients are prepared to negotiate from an interest based perspective, they improve the chances that they'll get a satisfying outcome.Learn more about DCA® or any of the classes or events mentioned in this episode at the links below:Website: www.divorcecoachesacademy.comInstagram: www.instagram.com/divorcecoachesacademyLinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/company/divorce-coaches-academyEmail: DCA@divorcecoachesacademy.com

Are you a business owner who struggles with perfection? In this episode, Becca Eberhart, CEO at Maximum Lawyer, discusses the challenges of the all-or-nothing mentality in entrepreneurship. The all-or-nothing mentality can be a double edged sword for a lot of people. On one hand, it can lead to bold moves but on the other, it can lead to inaction. Becca uses this to talk about effective business planning. If you wait for everything to be perfect when doing a project or planning for next year's budget, there can be missed opportunities. It is important to have a clear plan but be open to changes as a business evolves and grows.Engaging in an all-or-nothing mindset can lead to missing out on some things. One thing is missed opportunities. For example, if you were to only focus on the highest priced hiring coach for your business, you could overlook other individuals who bring something to the table that you didn't think you would need. The highest price tag doesn't always mean quality. Another thing is paralysis by analysis. If you are focused on making the perfect choice, you could become indecisive and inactive because you are waiting for the right thing to come along. Inflexibility is another issue as sticking to one thing or staying on one path can lead to a business becoming stagnant and unfit for growth. If you choose to avoid an all-or-nothing mindset, there are some things that can go well. First is reduced stress as a business owner. With a flexible way of doing business, you can avoid the need for perfection and do things that work for you. Another thing is the ability to innovate. Being open to new ideas and creativity will lead to a business that is always evolving and trying new things. With this, people will see a business that is changing as their consumers do.Learn about how to avoid the all-or-nothing approach with Becca!1:20 Exploring the mindset of hiring coaches2:38 The drawbacks of fixating on making the perfect choice and becoming indecisive3:57 The benefits of avoiding an all-or-nothing mindset Resources: Join the Guild Membership Subscribe to the Maximum Lawyer Youtube Channel Follow us on Instagram Join the Facebook Group Follow the Facebook Page Follow us on LinkedIn

Forrest and Dr. Rick both identify as “reformed rigid people,” and in this episode they explore how to become more psychologically flexible. Just like how physical flexibility is the amount of stretch in our muscles, the ability they have to bend without breaking, psychological flexibility is the same quality in our minds. It helps us look at situations in new lights, be open to our emotions, let go of old versions of ourselves, and step into new ways of being. They talk about rigidity as a form of psychological defense, the motivations for rigidity, the trap of assumptions and limiting beliefs, releasing attachment, and embracing new ways of thinking. In yet another sign that the people that are supposed to know what they are doing, don't, the Funding for Lending programme came to an end yesterday. It was cheap money from the Reserve Bank to the retail banks to get cash out into the economy. And in another of those "whoops, with the benefit of hindsight we would have done it differently" comments, they now say that they should have put more flexibility into the programme. Why? Because the need for banks to access discounted money has long been over, and we are now in the middle of an inflation crisis because of cheap money, lavish spending and no labour and closed borders. In other words - whatever it is you do, do it for the period it needs to be done and no longer. So why did it go longer than needed? Because, 1) The Reserve Bank didn't put any flexibility in. And, 2) Once they realised that, they argued it is better to keep to your word if you said you would do something. It reminds me of the wage subsidy programme by the Government. They swore black and blue that all that mattered was to get money out there to save jobs. And as a headline, as a broad concept, it wasn't a bad idea. But what about the detail? What about the flexibility? How hard would it have been for the Reserve Bank to say "this is the deal for now but given none of us has a clue how this all unfolds, we retain the right to change things if matters require us to". Honestly, is that hard? Surely someone at some point thought about that? Equally, the Government's wage subsidy - should you in future not actually need the help, should over the next financial year you turn out to be profitable, you will need to pay back some, or all, of the money. Not every business was going to suffer. Some businesses were going to do well. Once again, how hard would it have been to hand the money out with a rider? How many meetings were held where a bit of basic common sense was clearly completely absent? And as a result, how many billions have been funnelled out for no good reason for the next generations to have to try and pay back, because the people with the power and the responsibility never took the job seriously enough? Or if they did, never had the skills to execute it properly?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this week's episode, Ricardo talks about flexibility and inflexibility when planning something. We often have the mindset of planning, executing, and controlling something so that it must go exactly as planned. Any variation in the plan is bad and should be avoided, this is inflexibility, and all we don't have today is predictability, showing that the world of inflexibility no longer exists. Ricardo explains that we need to have a broader range of decision-making regarding changes, to be flexible, and teams have to seek as much autonomy as possible. And finally, Ricardo gives three tips for you to have a team with more autonomy, more flexibility, and more conditions to adapt to this changing environment, that is, to be anti-fragile, which are: Invest in knowledge and understand the cause-and-effect relationships. Work with principles rather than processes. Measure the result by the ability of people to work together and produce the expected deliverables. Listen to this week's #5minpodcast to learn more.

THE Leadership Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
The faintest glimmer of hope is reflecting off a trillion hypodermic needle tips, as we vaccinate our way out of the Covid pandemic nightmare. Very shortly, we will be back into it, but actually what will we be doing in this totally time shifted world. We have lost nearly two years of our normal lives, as well as millions of loved ones, through this virus. My colleague Matt Norman in Minnesota gave a presentation at our virtual Dale Carnegie Owner's Meeting which focused on some of the challenges we will face going forward and I have adapted it for Japan. Here are five trends we need to start thinking about. Managing a split workforce Covid will be contained, but many in our workforce won't be satisfied to be contained in the office anymore. They want the freedoms of working from home to continue to some extent. Regimented lives, genie like, have tasted freedom and won't be so easily stuffed back in the 9 to 11 bottle. How do we avoid a two class system evolving of those present and accounted for and those invisible men and women no longer in the boss's line of sight? How do we make sure information is flowing freely, quickly, accurately and equally throughout the organisation? Selling virtually forever By definition, if buyers are working from home, then selling online will continue. Listening to our clients, most Japanese salespeople have made a mess of it so far and so how long can this situation be tolerated? A big proportion of selling will go back to face to face, but not all. Are we just going to give up on the virtual sales component and leave that to our rivals to rule the field of business battle? Why can't salespeople do both and do both at a very high skill competency level? Leading to foster agility and resilience Leaders in Japan were outed for their actual lack of competent leadership skills during the work from home phenomenon. Covid really showed how inflexible the systems were and how unagile firms were in Japan. Resilience and dealing with change are skills which can be learnt. The irony has been that most organisation stopped their training during Covid and tried to tough it out. Agility's biggest enemies are inertia, red tape, politics, factional infighting, overly extended decision making processes and working in isolated silos. The base solutions to these problems are building real trust and dramatically improving communication. How do you do that when the team are scattered to the winds and are not that interested in going back to the old ways? Leadership capability creation at all levels Japan doesn't seem to function well in a crisis. I believed in Japan Inc and the Japanese Government until the January 1995 Kobe earthquake. Much was revealed then. Natural disasters are part and parcel of life here – earthquakes, tsunami, typhoons, landslides, floods, etc. Yet we didn't seem to learn much and when the March 2011 Tohoku earthquake, tsunami and nuclear meltdown combo hit, again the leadership was lacking. The 2020 Covid pandemic has been frustrating, especially seeing how poor the leadership has continued to be. Inside companies we need a culture where our people are confident to step up and become accountable and lead. This will never happen by itself. We need leaders who can create that environment and when we do that, speed of action becomes a powerful competitive advantage. Post Covid employee engagement Covid has raised a lot of questions about life, death, values, family. Are leaders thinking to get everyone back to the salt mines and work them like dogs, seeing them catch the last train home night after night. We have a severe population decline which is going to up the ante in business's war for talent. Inflexibility will come at a concrete cost, as your people flee to a better home somewhere else. Why would they do that? Because the leaders are not able to understand the new reality and cannot respond to the changes needed. Leader communication skills, which were already tatty and quite poor before, will become own goal lethal in this new zero sum game. While the pandemic pounds us with a continual barrage of issues, problems, inadequacies, contradictions and challenges, we tend to hunker down in our fox holes and hope for the best. “Hope”, as they say in the classics, “is not a great strategy”. What are the key issues we need to address as we begin to poke our noses above the parapet? It is clear we need to be thinking differently, because we are not going back to what was. So what are you thinking about the future world of work and what are doing about it today?

"In medicine, empiric therapy is treatment that is administered based on the probability of success because we don’t have all of the information. We make our 'best guess.' Actually, empiric decision-making exists in our everyday lives — running the garbage disposal when the sink is clogged, jiggling the key in the lock when it doesn’t turn. Mr. Thomas was in stable condition, and I estimated that his chances of finding an answer to his chest pain with another specialist, was very low. It was time to make my best guess. I explained my theory to Mr. Thomas and suggested we try some myofascial bodywork. In the best case, he would feel a difference; and in the worst case, he would feel a little sore and looser in his body, but without pain relief. Mr. Thomas was definitely interested. With hope and caution, we proceeded. I started with the sides of his chest … zig … then his abdominals … zag … then low back … zig … I checked with him frequently as he groaned with each maneuver, but he always nodded to continue. When the trial was over, I helped him sit up on the exam table." Cathy Kim is a family physician and can be reached at Dr. Cathy. If you are experiencing Pandemic Stress, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can help! This is a stressful time for most of us; the mental health aftermath of a pandemic is sometimes called a "second pandemic" because of the rise of depression, anxiety, and PTSD. And in addition to fear of the coronavirus itself, we are currently facing other major, global stressors like climate change, forest fires, systemic racism, economic uncertainty, and political divisiveness. No wonder so many of us are exhausted! In this podcast episode, co-hosts Diana Hill and Debbie Sorensen discuss Pandemic Stress and give examples of how they use ACT practices themselves, as they experience emotional ups and downs. Whether you are anxious, depressed, lonely, or irritable, Diana and Debbie have some strategies from ACT that might help you be more flexible and accepting in the face of the pandemic. I talk about how there's a great deal of inflexibility in my family and how it manifests as thoughts, words, actions and physical reality. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
What is psychological flexibility and inflexibility? How does it affect our mental health and dealing with struggles like anxiety, depression, OCD, and even viewing pornography? In this episode of the Life After Series Radio Podcast, Dr. Cameron Staley discusses psychological flexibility AND inflexibility. There are lots of ways to conceptualize mental health. One way ACT views mental health is this idea of psychological flexibility. This is when we are able to respond to the actual demands to our environment in this moment, in the place we are at. Having the flexibility to notice thoughts and emotions and then choosing our own actions is usually a good indication of solid mental health. On the flipside, psychological inflexibility can predict all kinds of mental health concerns one of which is the struggle with pornography. In this episode, we walk you through some of the concepts that go into this idea of psychological inflexibility. Concept #1: How Present We Are In Any Given Moment Are we locked into the past? Do we dwell on previous failures and regrets? This can lead to lots of experiences with depression. Flip side...people focused on the future and worrying about the “What If?” experience a little more anxiety. Can you be present in this moment? Worrying about the future or dwelling on the past is partly a product of language. The more we are at present-focused allow us to respond to what the demands are in front of us right now. Concept #2: Not Having A Clear Picture On What You Value Most Out Of Life. Not having purpose to guide our actions. So if you're unsure about what brings you meaning, what you're working towards your going to have a pretty aimless life and your actions may not lead to the things that you want. Setting the right goals is so vital for this concept. Some of us know these values and have goals, but struggle living up to them. First step, do you know what you value in life? Second, are you living consistent with it? Are you engaging with the activities that help you on that pursuit. Concept #3: Do We Struggle With Our Thoughts, Emotions, And Urges? Think about how often we do that throughout the day. There's often thought patterns that I don't like that I'm struggling with. Battling with them trying to get rid of them. It's kind of like wrestling with a pig and where you both get muddy and the pig loves it. Those thoughts don't go away. If anything they get stronger and intensify and you get wrapped up in them. The more we struggle with this concept of struggling with our thoughts, emotions, and urges...that's inflexibility. And this is what I see often with pornography. We have this thought that we should be able to control these urges. And since we can have that thought, we believe it to be true. We over-believe our thoughts. Concept #4: Do We Allow Those Thoughts, Emotions, And Urges To Dictate Our Actions? This is when we act from that world of reaction. Those who struggle with unwanted pornography are used to this pattern. They have an urge to view, so they view. There's no space in between that urge and that action. This is where awareness comes into place. We're able to reflect and notice urges and emotions. As we engage in that process of slowing down and being mindful, unlocks a world. And we are able to respond to urges instead of reacting to them. Don’t ruin your home sale before it even begins. Here are six dumb reasons that homes typically fail to sell. I hear all the time from clients about why homes don’t sell, so I wanted to share six such reasons with you today that stick out to me: 1. Sellers want to price a home based on feelings instead of market data. If you’re selling your home, it’s important to follow your agent’s advice. They’ll review with you what they think you can get for your home and where it should reasonably appraise. It’s so important to do this when pricing your home. 2. Keeping all of your stuff in your house. Buyers want to see open spaces. They want to see what you saw when you bought the home. That’s why it’s important to declutter and remove anything from the home that isn’t completely necessary. 3. Not sprucing up the house. If you need new paint or carpet, get that taken care of before you list. A good agent can help you get creative with solutions to help you accomplish these goals. “A lowball offer is not a final offer.” 4. Lackluster photos. If you have an agent who uses smartphone pictures instead of professional photos, please find another agent. Your agent should be properly marketing your home with professional photography to help it sell quicker and for more money. 5. Inflexibility with showtimes. You’re selling a home, which is a consumer product. You need to have hours of operation just like a store. Maybe you should consider having your pets stay somewhere else while you’re showing the home to make it easier. Buyers will look at homes anywhere from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on the weekends. It’s important to be as flexible as possible. 6. Lowball offers. A lowball offer is not the final offer. Don’t just simply reject this kind of offer. Make a counteroffer, don’t get offended, and be patient. If you have any questions for me about this list or anything else related to real estate, don’t hesitate to give me a call or send me an email. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Everyone finds security in predictability and comfort. However, spiritual growth happens in the areas of divergence and inconvenience. The will of God is often found in our interruptions!Live with and open hand—the tighter the grip, the more damaging the removal. Flexibility isn’t lack of planning but a willingness to adapt our plans to God’s plans (Prov. 3:5, 6; 16:3). Inflexibility is a product of a prideful desire to be in control. The only constant is change, and resistance can reveal an unwillingness to acknowledge God may be doing something you have no say over (Is. 55:8, 9). All people, places, and events belong to God—God is sovereign, we are servants (Ps. 24:1; Jer. 27:5; 32:27; Acts 17:25, 26). This means that while we can make plans, God has the authority to change anything at any time—and our response to that change says more about us than God (Prov. 19:21). This is God’s world; we just get to live in it!

“In the simplicity of life, happiness finds its way into the cracks of those ordinary moments that we can tend to take for granted sometimes.” - Diane Forster (2:08 - 2:20)Diane ForsterI Have Today Real happiness comes from within you. Happiness is the elusive emotion that we’re all seeking, but many of us are going about it the wrong way. We think that our happiness depends on external circumstances, or that we can fulfill ourselves with material objects. Maybe it's a new job, a car, a house, or a travel experience. While those are all great things and might make you feel happy temporarily, real long-lasting happiness has to come from within you. “When you emit to the universe that you’re happy, you’ll attract other happy people.” - Diane Forster (9:49 - 9:56) The pursuit of happiness through external objects often leads people to emotional distress. Instead of feeling joy and satisfaction, people become sad and depressed, since they don't have an awareness of what they really want. In such cases, it might be time to eliminate certain habits from our lives and create the space to be happy. When we remove the things that aren't serving us well, happiness finds its way onto our lives in the simplest forms during ordinary moments that we tend to take for granted. Three habits to give up to create space for happiness. The need to please others. It’s simply not possible to please everyone all the time. Someone else's opinion of you is merely a reflection of what they are going through at that moment. The only reason for you to do something is if it feels right for you. If you’re doing something from the need to please others, you might be putting the wrong energy into those actions. Consequently, the other person doesn't see your work the way you intended, and they reciprocate your negative energy. Always ask yourself if you’re doing something because it makes you happy, or if you’re doing it to please someone else. Inflexibility. No matter what you’re trying to accomplish, some things will go wrong along the way. Everyone has to deal with unexpected adversity at some point in their journey. When that happens, being flexible and having the ability to adapt becomes extremely important. Being inflexible causes you to have a level of expectation of how things are supposed to work. But nothing ever turns out the way you expect them to. They almost always turn out better, as long as you trust in the process, make necessary adjustments, and keep going. By being flexible and opening yourself up to new opportunities, you’ll be amazed at the coincidences that start showing up in your life. “Perfectionism is really procrastination masked. It will stifle your life and create unhappiness.” - Diane Forster (15:38 - 15:51) 3. Perfectionism. There is no such thing as true perfection. Things are only as perfect as they can be at any given moment. Trying to be perfect at all times will keep you from taking action to move forward. It will stifle your life and make you unhappy. Try to let go of perfectionism, and do the best you can in each moment. Whatever you’re creating, get it done and put it out there. Let that piece go, and trust that it is as good as it needs to be. While these tips may seem simple, they are extremely powerful. It’s in simplicity that your joy and happiness reside. If you simplify your life, you’ll create the space you need to experience happiness. Take some time this week to evaluate if one of the three above-mentioned habits are holding you back. If so, it’s time make a conscious decision to let go and start living a life of joy and fulfillment. You deserve all of the joy and happiness in the world. Clear out those obstacles. Start TODAY. No one wants to sabotage their own home sale. Unfortunately, some sellers unknowingly make mistakes that only hamper their efforts for a successful sale. In today’s message, we’ll consider five common ways this happens: 1. Bad color schemes. You and your family might adore the red, neon green, or purple color you painted the kids’ rooms with, but buyers won’t. Before putting your home on the market, cover up those lurid colors with something more neutral, like a tan or lighter gray. You could even make a fun weekend out of it. 2. Personal taste. Living here in the Southwest, no one could blame you for having that sort of decor. However, buyers coming from other parts of the country, such as Minnesota or Chicago, to name a few, aren’t going to see it the same way. Pack up some of your Southwestern decor along with personal, family photos. The more you depersonalize, the more buyers will be attracted to the home. “The more you depersonalize, the more buyers will be attracted to the home.” 3. Bad odors. You’ve probably grown used to the odors that your pet emits, the septic leak outside, or even your neighbor’s compost pile. The problem is these smells won’t evade buyers stepping onto your property for the first time. Some easy, quick fixes to this are getting your carpet professionally cleaned, lighting candles before a showing, and plug-in air fresheners. 4. Inflexibility with showings. You, like a lot of other sellers, probably don’t like the idea of having to file out of your home just as you and your family are sitting down to dinner at 6 p.m. because that’s the time that works for the buyer. Think of it this way: That buyer could be the one person that absolutely falls in love with your house. Not knowing what could come of each showing is enough reason to be extremely flexible; plus, flexibility means that more buyers will see your home, which should lead to a quicker sale. 5. Disguising problem areas. Items of this nature might include a leaky toilet, a cracked tile, a patch of paint, etc. Covering up the little things without making meaningful fixes could prove to be costly in the end. Buyers will likely catch this and wonder if there are larger issues you’re covering up as well. I advise my clients to have a handyman come in and tackle the last-minute “honey-do-list.” If you need any further information or you have questions regarding how you can help your home sale, please reach out to me by phone at 602-680-0734 or email me at Aaron@DottRealEstate.com. I’d be happy to help however I can!

This is a special addition of SLPs More Water Please! We are being cognitively flexible and not obsessing over adhering to an established routine! What is cognitive flexibility?Cognitive flexibility has been described as the mental ability to switch between thinking about two different concepts, and to think about multiple concepts simultaneously.Cognitive flexibility refers to the brain’s ability to transition from thinking about one concept to another. The quicker you are able to switch or “shift” your thinking from one dimension (e.g. color of an object) to another (e.g. shape of an object), the greater your level of cognitive flexibility. Shifting, or cognitive flexibility, is described as the ability to refocus attention to relevant stimuli (Diamond, 2006) and also simultaneously consider conflicting representations of information in order to execute goal-directed behavior (Jacques & Zelazo, 2005). Cognitive inflexibility is thought to manifest as perseveration on a prepotent response, which demonstrates an individual's difficulty or inability to shift to new representations (Zelazo et al., 2003). Young children show perseveration on shifting tasks by making consistent errors and showing difficulty in inhibiting a prepotent response (Zelazo et al., 2003). Inflexibility is most consistently observed in TD children under 3, with increases in shifting abilities occurring between 3 and 5 years. Perseveration is observed in individuals with a variety of disorders associated with deficits in frontal lobe functioning, such as traumatic brain injury and autism (Zelazo et al., 2003). “When perfectionism is driving us, shame is always riding shotgun and fear is the backseat driver.” - Brené Brown In this episode, we discuss the ways that perfectionism holds us back in our businesses. We often see perfectionism used as an excuse for procrastination or as a reason to hold ourselves back once we’ve reached a certain level of success. Here are the 7 perfectionistic tendencies we’ve identified in our own business and with our clients. Listen in to hear how we address each one. You procrastinate until the stars align. You often spend copious amounts of time just to perfect something that just isn't that important. You have an all-or-nothing approach. Inflexibility. You have a very specific manner in which things should be done. Intolerance for mistakes. You are extremely hard on yourself. You focus on the destination, rather than the journey. It’s all about the end result. Your success is never good enough. Joy: Why Brené Brown Says Perfectionism Is a 20-Ton ShieldHustle: Lighting Kit, Ring Light
Justyn continued our series on Spiritual Gifts looking at the gift of Administration. To view Justyn's slides (in PDF format), click here. Gift of Administration - 1 Cor 12:28-31 The gift is included in an list alongside apostles, prophets, evangelists, and miracles. It’s there for a purpose. The passage clearly shows that it is a spiritual gift, therefore it is given by and empowered by the Holy Spirit. The same Holy Spirit who heals, saves and delivers! We need to see this gift as of equal value as all the gifts and not separate into a ‘secular vs spiritual’ mindset. The word Administration in greek is Kubernesis meaning ‘to steer, or rule or govern’. it refers to a ships captain or master and is about guiding or directing the ship towards a goal. Administrators are often ‘jack of all trades’ and can see things through the lenses of others as they steer the whole of the ship forward. They are broad and see a big picture. There are plenty of administrators in the bible - God (the great architect who created and sustains all things), Moses, Daniel, Solomon and Stephen to name a few. Some important points • Faith - key for any administrator as we need to hear and believe God as we steer the ship. • Spontaneous vs Planned - planning is vital and is not less spiritual than spontaneity. In creation God made everything according to his plan and order. Imagine if the fish had been made before the water! • Flexible Structures - administration is about creating flexible wineskins/structures that serve the wine/product/service of the organisation. They are to sustain and bring life, not kill it. Inflexibility and focus on the structure, not on the spirit of the organisation creates bureaucracy and ultimate death. • He wastes nothing - God works all things for good. He doesn’t waste our, or others mistakes, they are all learning opportunities. • Handling Tension - nothing is perfect, but when tensions arise we need faith to see that the tension creates energy, and that energy should be used to bring the breakthrough needed. Questions 1. We are called to ask for gifts, so it this is something we can, and should ask God for, even in a small measure! 2. Do you identify having the gift of administration? 3. Do you prefer spontaneity or planning? How do you feel about people to work the oppose way? How can we honour our differences? 4. In your work place, does the structure hind or help the life of the organisation? Can you bring something of the kingdom of God in that influence new life? How you manage, encourage and relate to others has a huge impact.
