The rise and fall of King Herod Agrippa I illustrates God's opposition to human pride and the unstoppable nature of His Word. Despite persecution of the early church including the execution of James and imprisonment of Peter, God's sovereign justice prevailed when Herod accepted worship as a god and was struck down.• Background on the Herodian dynasty as puppet rulers installed by Rome• Herod the Great was the first in this dynasty, ruling through fear and brutal tactics• The Herods maintained power through brutal oppression despite public works projects• Herod Agrippa I persecuted the church by killing James and imprisoning Peter• God's dramatic judgment fell on Herod when he accepted divine worship• The Word of God continued to grow despite persecution• Four key lessons: the danger of power and wealth, God's opposition to pride, God's sovereign justice, and the unstoppable nature of God's WordIf you've never done so, tell God you're opening your heart to believe in Jesus as your Savior and receive the promise of eternal life in Him.Video available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSPhIM2SAmk
Acts. 10:23-48, note especially verses 44-46. [Read in the context of Luke 24:49 & Acts 2:1-4, The Jewish Pentecost].The Jewish believers in Jerusalem, after the resurrection of Jesus, were admonished to be in quasi hiding which refer to as an “”upper room” (1:4, 2:1).. They were told to not go anywhere until they received “power from on high”” (Luke 24:49) or baptized, immersed, bathed in the Holy Spirit's power: only then go out in His direction and power(1:4). They were not told when this would happen or that it would happen in 50 days later, at the Jewish feast of Pentecost: note the word “suddenly”(2:1). The Spirit came in His time and manner and in grand fashion(read 2:1-4, The primary sign was “Other tongues”(Verse 4), not also verse 3, “Tongues of fire”. Tongues have to do with communication, Supernatural Communication. It's not just the words of the gospel preached but the anointing or power of the Spirit behind them even in their praying (1 Corinthians 13:1; 14:1-2).The time and manner for the Gentiles Spirit Baptism comes a little later in Acts 10 where God uses the Jewish believer, Peter, to reach out to the nations predicted in the Old Testament(Isaiah 49:6). Peter was not very opened minded so God had to give him a vision, or to open his religious mind; That Christ sacrificed is the cleansing, atoning for all people: 10:15 “...Don't call anything impure that God has made clean “(repeated 3x - he's a little stubborn). At this point the centurion's men came to beckon Peter: God thought their devotion to the Jewish God deserved the progressive revelation to them, Peter was doing a pretty comprehensive job(10:23-43), but spoke too long according to the Spirit who was eager to empower the gentiles, so He interrupted Peter - (See verse 43) and similar to Acts 2:1-4, the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out on them (verses 44-46)Notice that their experience was exactly like the Jewish Pentecost. Peter and his circumcised entourage were “astonished” and pleased when they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God just like them (see 2:1-4; also Galatians 3:26-29)The Spirit is depicted here as being very eager to Baptize them, but He couldn't wait for Peter to finish his verbal dissertation in the Gospel. Peter was convinced(note verses 47-48) at least for a time:consider the confrontation Paul had with him in Galatians 2:11-21. Peter's openness seems to have suffered a set-back in Galatia. He and we need to keep growing in our liberality towards those different from us. What can we today learn from this powerful story in Acts 10:1)That God Prepares His people for further experiences in His Holy Spirit: a time of prayer and preparation (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4,8; Peter and all involved had to be prepared.Peter had to experience divine trance, or vision unrequested by him. He had to experience it; ex. To get him ready and be willing to go preach to the gentiles. Cornelius's household were devout and clearly open Acts. 10:1-7. More prepared than Peter pre-vision.II. God expects His people to be obedient even if what He asks of them is challenging. And He is willing to do His part, by His Spirit, to gift them to action: He did this to the early Spirit filled Jewish believers; He did it to Peter by His visions. THe promise of Luke:24:49 and Acts 2 is enacted through the book of Acts and Christian history by the Spirit's power we also need in our day in His time and manner.III. God is eager, is His time, to extend His call to the Gentile that He interrupts, even Peter's eloquent sermon. It's not only about his or our words, dogmas etc. it's by His Spirit(read Zechariah 4:4:6… Not by [human] might [only] but by my Spirit, says the Lord.Read also Acts 1:8Amen

Acts: Welcome to our study in the Book of The Acts of the Apostles. To summarize the book of Acts in one sentence: The Kingdom of Israel Fades as the Body of Christ Grows. To say simply that Acts is the story of the beginning of the church is to give a half-truth, for first, God offers the Earthly Kingdom to Israel and when that nation rejects their own risen Messiah, then God cuts off Israel, and grafts in the Body of Christ, replacing the covenant of law with the covenant of Grace. Who were the major Apostles? Jesus chose the 12 Apostles, Peter, James, John and the rest, and as He promised them, they would sit on 12 thrones, and judge the 12 tribes of Israel. On the other hand, for the Body, Paul is the one apostle for the one Body of Christ, and neither Paul, nor the Twelve Apostles, will rule over us, but Christ alone is the head of the body, whereas Israel, as a political entity, as a kingdom, can employ 12 judges. The title of the Book, The Acts of the Apostles, could be focused more precisely. It could be the Acts of the Apostles, Peter and Paul. In Acts 1 through 8, Peter is the primary actor and through Peter God offers the Kingdom to Israel. In Acts 9, God saves Paul and sends him to the Gentiles and it is only through Paul's ministry that God tells us about the Body of Christ and the dispensation of Grace. Perhaps you felt like God wasn't answering, or you questioned why He allowed something to happen. Maybe you've wished for some foresight to prevent a disaster, but it didn't come. These are tough questions, and today, we're looking at a passage in Acts that can give us some insight.Scripture Reading: Acts 13: 1-13Summary of the Passage:The story in Acts 12 is dramatic and powerful, showing how God works in unexpected ways. Here's a brief summary:Persecution and Arrest (Acts 12:1-4): King Herod arrests some believers, kills James (the brother of John), and imprisons Peter during the Festival of Unleavened Bread.Prayer and Miraculous Escape (Acts 12:5-17): The church prays earnestly for Peter. An angel rescues him from prison, leading him past the guards and through the gates. Peter goes to the house of Mary, where believers are astonished by his escape.Herod's Downfall (Acts 12:18-23): Herod, failing to find Peter, executes the guards. Later, Herod gives a public address, accepts praise as a god, and is struck down by an angel, dying a gruesome death.Continued Growth (Acts 12:24-25): Despite the persecution, the word of God spreads and flourishes. Barnabas and Saul complete their mission and return with John Mark.Key Themes:Persecution and Prayer:James' Death and Peter's Imprisonment: Herod's actions show the reality of persecution faced by early Christians. The church's response to Peter's imprisonment was earnest prayer. In times of crisis, turning to God in prayer is crucial.Divine Intervention:Angel's Rescue of Peter: God's intervention through the angel demonstrates His power and willingness to deliver His people. The chains falling off, the gates opening by themselves, and the guards remaining unaware highlight the miraculous nature of Peter's escape.God's Sovereignty:Herod's Downfall: Herod's pride and acceptance of divine praise lead to his downfall, showing that God is in control and will not share His glory. Despite persecution, God's plan continues to unfold, and the church grows.Application to Our Lives:Trust in God's Plan: Even when circumstances seem dire, trust that God is at work. James' death and Peter's escape both serve a purpose in God's overarching plan. The Power of Prayer: The early church's earnest prayer played a role in Peter's miraculous escape. In our own lives, we should never underestimate the power of prayer.God's Timing and Methods: God's ways are not always our ways. While we may not understand His timing or methods, we can trust that He is always working for our good and His glory. Conclusion:The story in Acts 12 teaches us that God is always present, even in the darkest times. His ways may be mysterious, and His timing may not align with ours, but He is always in control. Trust in His plan, rely on the power of prayer, aSupport the showJeremy McCandless is creating podcasts and devotional resources | PatreonHelp us continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.com
Sunday, September 8, 2024 – Today, we continued our study in 2 Peter 2, focusing on how "God’s Jealousy Protects Against False Teachers." Jealousy is typically seen as a negative characteristic, but when it comes to God, His jealousy is about wanting a relationship with us, which was broken by the curse of sin. The entire 2nd chapter of 2 Peter speaks about God’s judgment against false teachers and prophets who lead people away from the truth of God’s Word. God is against them, and His judgment is pure. He will destroy the false teacher. This is both an encouraging word for us and a warning. We need to be careful to guard our hearts against speaking anything intentionally false, and we can take heart in knowing that God’s jealousy for us protects us. Let's continue to worship and study together.

Sunday, August 25, 2024 – We continue our study of 2 Peter, focusing today on the theme of "God’s Righteous Judgment & Mercy.” Peter is careful to reveal God’s stance on sin, particularly the sin of being a false teacher or prophet, which has far-reaching consequences. God does not show favoritism toward any wrongdoer, be they angelic or human. We will also explore Lucifer's origin as the "guardian cherub" and how pride led to his downfall and the subsequent downfall of humanity. Join us in worship and study, and be prepared to be challenged, encouraged, and blessed.

Whether we like it or not or except it or not, the believer in Christ is engaged in spiritual conflict. The battle of good and evil is also a battle of life and death. Though we may have not initiated the war, we are certainly a part of it because we are God's children. But thanks, Peter God that through the Lord Jesus Christ, we have victory over darkness and every wicked device. Thankfully, God has not left us defenseless, but has equipped us with spiritual weapons that are mighty for the pulling down of strongholds. In Christ, we are overcomers, and we are seated far above all principalities and powers at the right hand of God.

The title of the Book, The Acts of the Apostles, could be focused more precisely. It could be the Acts of the Apostles, Peter and Paul. For most of the Twelve Apostles, Luke the author of this book, mentions only their names, and that, only once. Whereas Peter and Paul are the main actors. As The Acts opens, it's all Peter and then as God cuts off Israel and grafts in the Gentiles in the Body, the story transitions and as Peter fades out, Paul replaces him as the primary actor. The Book of Acts is the story of the transition from Israel to the Body of Christ. Get this entire verse by verse Bible study in four parts. The first verse of 1 Peter describes Christians as *exiles*, *strangers* or *aliens*. How does that description fit with your experience of living as a Christian today? Leave your thoughts and comments below. In this new teaching series in 1 Peter God's people are described as chosen exiles. Dave McNee examines what this means for the way we should live and relate to the world around us, and how we get the power to do so.
1 Peter 1v 22-25: 21who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. 22Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 23since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; 24for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, 25 but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you.
Peter writes to Christians who are being persecuted, encouraging them to testify to the truth and live accordingly.

2 Peter 1:3-9 Sermon delivered to the Galena Bible Church, Sunday November 14th, 2021 by pastor Chris Kopp.
Pastor Terry continues in 1 Peter: God wants us to live joyfully in the in-between.
Hello and welcome to the show today! Over the past couple of weeks we have been looking at the Roman Centurion Cornelius, who we see in Acts 10 was serving God the best he knew how; but he did not yet know Jesus. And so an angel appears to him in a dream, telling him to send men to Joppa to find and bring a man by the name of Simon Peter who was lodging there. And so Cornelius obeys and sends men to find Peter. Now while all of this is happening, Peter himself has a vision, in which he is given from heaven a lot of food (some of which is unclean; not kosher) and a voice from heaven tells him “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.” (v.13) But Peter refuses, saying in verse 14, “Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.” Yet the voice persists, saying “What God has cleansed you must not call common.” And this scenario is repeated 2 more times before the food is lifted back to heaven. Now Peter, no doubt puzzled by this vision, is pondering what this means when the men sent from Cornelius show up at his gate. And the Holy Spirit says to Peter “Behold, three men are seeking you. Arise therefore, go down and go with them, doubting nothing; for I have sent them.” (v.19-20) And so Peter goes down to meet them, listens to their explanation of Cornelius' being instructed by an angel to send for him. And it says… Acts 10:23a (NKJV)— 23 Then he invited them in and lodged them. Barriers Toppling— And in that last phrase we already begin to see the barriers coming down because no self-respecting Jew would ever invite a Gentile into their home, and especially not a soldier of the extremely hated Roman army. But Peter receives both the two Gentile servants and the soldier into that home and then (on the next day) begins to journey with them from Joppa to Caesarea. It says… Acts 10:23b (NKJV)— On the next day Peter went away with them, and some brethren from Joppa accompanied him. Leaving With Witnesses— And we see later in 11:12 that these brethren who accompanied Peter were six Jewish believers who in v. 45 of this chapter are identified as “those of the circumcision”. And these were men that Peter himself had selected to come along with him as witnesses; and it's interesting (in light of just how big and controversial this whole scenario is) he chooses to bring three times the official number of witnesses needed. And so he and this whole party begin their two-day, 30-mile trek from Joppa to Caesarea. It says in… Acts 10:24 (NKJV)— 24 And the following day they entered Caesarea. Now Cornelius was waiting for them, and had called together his relatives and close friends. Already A Witness— And this is great; because here we see already in Cornelius a recognition that whatever blessing he is about to receive, that blessing is not just for him. No, it's something to be shared. He has already gathered his relatives and friends (those closest to him) so that they also can hear the message of life. Even before becoming a Christian Cornelius is already being a witness. Now it says in… Acts 10:25-26 (NKJV)— 25 As Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him. 26 But Peter lifted him up, saying, “Stand up; I myself am also a man.” A Humble Peter— So once again (just as when Peter had healed Aeneas and gave all the glory to Christ) we find (unlike in the Gospels) a humble Peter; a Peter who is unwilling to accept the glory, praise, and worship and who is instead very careful to re-direct all that attention where it belongs; on Jesus and Jesus alone. And it says in… Acts 10:27-29a (NKJV)— 27 And as he talked with him, he went in and found many who had come together. 28 Then he said to them, “You know how unlawful it is for a Jewish man to keep company with or go to one of another nation. But God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean. 29 Therefore I came without objection as soon as I was sent for. I ask, then, for what reason have you sent for me?” An Honest Peter— Now I love how honest Peter is here. He doesn't disguise the fact that God has recently challenged and corrected his worldview in regards to his way of treating non-Jewish people. And as you know, it takes a lot of guts to admit when you are wrong; to say you believed one way but God said, “No, that's not right.” How willing are you and I to receive the correction of the Lord and (more than that) to be open with others about how God is changing and re-shaping us? And this is important because before even beginning to preach, we see that Peter is demonstrating (and highlighting) for them what obedience to Christ looks like. And similarly, if you and I want our witness to be effective, there also ought to be an obedience to the Lord that is demonstrated in our lives as well. Lee's Example— [One Sunday morning in 1865, a black man entered a fashionable church in Richmond, Virginia. When Communion was served, he walked down the aisle and knelt at the altar. A rustle of resentment swept the congregation. How dare he! After all, believers in that church used the common cup. {And nobody wanted to share a cup with a black man. But then} Suddenly a distinguished layman stood up, stepped forward to the altar, and knelt beside the black man. {And that man was Robert E. Lee. And} With Robert E. Lee setting the example, the rest of the congregation soon followed his lead.] Sometimes all it takes for real change to take place is for one Christian to choose to set the example; to obey God even even if it might ruffle a few feathers. And you and I will never know what an impact our own personal obedience can have. An Amazed Crowd— Now what these non-Jewish men and women hear Peter saying to them absolutely astounds them. We cannot even being to imagine the shock and amazement (and even the rejoicing) that came over them when Peter announced to them that he no longer saw Gentiles as untouchables; because for centuries up until this point the Jews (on the basis of Old Testament law) had declared them to be unclean, some even going so far to refer to Gentiles as “dogs.” So to hear that barrier and hatred is now being erased must have moved them in such a real and profound way. Now Peter (although he gets that part) he amazingly still doesn't know why he is there, because he says in… Acts 10:29b (NKJV)— I ask, then, for what reason have you sent for me?” Shouldn't Peter Have Known?— And the reason this is remarkable is because it seems to show that Peter is still not really dialed in when it comes to the full scope of Christ's mission for him. I mean, shouldn't he have known that Jesus had called him there to preach the Gospel? You would think that would be pretty obvious, especially in light of Acts 1:8, in which Jesus had commissioned His Disciples to go to “the uttermost part of the earth”. And what this shows us is that while we have kind of this birds-eye picture of what God was doing, remember that those who were living in the midst of all of this didn't not know where God was taking His Church, even though it seems to us (especially in light of what Jesus' Great Commission) to be so obvious. But that's always how it is. It's often only after we obey God in taking a step in a new direction that we then (at a later time) look back at scripture and realize that that command was there long before that; and we wonder why it took us so long to get there. An Obedient Couple— I once knew a man and woman whose beliefs were directly challenged when an African-American woman started coming to their Church. Up until that point that was something they would not have been okay with. Now they had been Christians for many many years; they had read all the passages about God's making no distinction and how in Christ all races are equal and ought to be able to worship together, but it never clicked. But the Holy Spirit began speaking to them in and through their pastor's preaching and one day in their home they sat down together and said (as a couple) “We are no longer going to be against black people coming to our Church.” For the first time, it just clicked and they realized that they (although they had been faithful Christians for such a long time) God had a new level of Christ-like-ness that he wanted to draw them into. And so they (like Peter) chose to take that step of obedience and to no longer make a distinction. But it took a while for those pieces to come together. And the same was true with Peter, and really ALL of the Jerusalem Church who (in 11:1-18) question Peter as to his actions, which shouldn't have but DID alarm them. And we'll see in Acts 15 that they even call for a conference to deal with the place of the Gentiles in the Church. This whole process took some time, and Peter's eyes have not yet been opened to what God is doing on a larger scale. So he asks them why they have sent for him. And it says in… Acts 10:30-33 (NKJV)— 30 So Cornelius said, “Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing, 31 and said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your alms are remembered in the sight of God. 32 Send therefore to Joppa and call Simon here, whose surname is Peter. He is lodging in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea. When he comes, he will speak to you.' 33 So I sent to you immediately, and you have done well to come. Now therefore, we are all present before God, to hear all the things commanded you by God.” The First Missionary to Gentiles— And so the floor is now open for Peter to speak as the first real missionary to the Gentiles, as he has before him a captive audience of foreigners; foreigners who had customs very different from his own; they had their own culture and way of doing things, some of which were going to be changed in a radical way. Re-Shaping Us— But that is what the Gospel and the Word of God does. It challenges us. And the reason it challenges us is because it comes from the mind of God rather than the mind of man. If Christianity were just another man-made religion of the world, it (like all the other religions) would simply be a reflection of what we already believe, aligning with all our natural prejudices and warped ways of seeing the world. But the very fact that it moves us beyond all of these is evidence that there is a God behind all of this; a God who is much more loving and much more wise than we are. And if we are to become like Him, we have to allow His Word and His Worldview to shape us. And so this week, as always, I want to challenge you to read His Word; and to do so in prayer with a spirit of humility, being willing to allow His Word to read and re-shape you; to teach you. If we can foster that ability (by His grace) there is no doubt that (just like here with Peter) God can use you and me in incredible ways to bring His light to the world. Let's allow Him to reshape us today. Amen.

Bible Study with Jairus - Acts 25 Acts 25 is like a tug of war. Paul was imprisoned in Caesarea, a place Northwest of Jerusalem. The Jews insisted that Festus send Paul back to Jerusalem for trial, hoping to ambush and kill Paul on the way. Festus tried to please the Jews and asked Paul if he was willing to return to Jerusalem for trial, but Paul insisted on appealing to Caesar. So after Festus conferred with his council, he accepted Paul's request. Looking at it from here, Festus, as the Roman Governor of Judea, was a person who didn't take sides, or we could say that he was a bit of a fence sitter. He tried to please the Jews, saying he was using a conciliatory approach to rule the land of Jerusalem. His treatment of King Agrippa's argument about Paul and the Jews allowed us to see that he didn't think their case was that important. He told King Agrippa that the dispute between Paul and the Jews was merely a matter of disagreement about their own religion and the fact that Paul declared that Jesus died and was resurrected. His heart was perplexed over this situation. He asked Paul if he was willing to go to Jerusalem for trial, but Paul wasn't willing. So he planned to keep Paul. He said, "hold him until I can send him to Caesar" (Acts 25:21, NIV). I didn't pay attention to this sentence before. Festus had already planned to send Paul to Rome. But after King Agrippa interrogated Paul, he sighed, saying if Paul hadn't appealed to Caesar, he could have been set free (Acts 26:32, NIV). Acts 27:24 records an angel of God standing beside Paul and telling him he would stand before Caesar. This may be why Paul stood trial before Caesar later, but the Bible doesn't record the specific details of Paul and Caesar's meeting. Instead, it just recorded the experience of Paul, Festus, and King Agrippa meeting each other. Caesar here is said to be Nero Caesar. But this is only according to historical legends. When Nero persecuted the church later, Paul was martyred. With the Holy Spirit's help, we noticed that God predestined Paul's journey from Jerusalem to Rome to spread the gospel to Rome. As Acts 28 records, after Paul came to Rome, he rented a house there for two years, "to proclaim the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ—with all boldness and without hindrance" (Acts 28:31, NIV). This shows that the gospel Paul spread in Rome had laid a good foundation for evangelizing Europe. Therefore, in the development of the kingdom of God and the spread of the gospel, it was crucial for Paul to arrive safely in Rome from Jerusalem. Satan attempted to stop Paul from going to Rome. He incited the Jews to kill Paul in Jerusalem. But Paul's nephew heard their plan and reported it to commander Lysias, and Paul was arrested. Then the Jews went to Governor Felix to complain, and Felix asked Paul to defend himself. Paul gave testimony to Felix, saying that he "keeps his conscience clear before God and man" (Acts 24:16, NIV, and that he did not commit any wrongdoings. Later, Felix, who was well acquainted with the Way, adjourned the proceedings. "When Lysias the commander comes," he said, "I will decide your case." He ordered commander Lysias to keep Paul under guard but to give him some freedom and permit his friends to take care of his needs" (Acts, 24:22-23, NIV). Later, Felix and his Jewish wife listened to Paul, who continued to talk about Jesus Christ. "Paul talked about righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come" (Acts 24:25, NIV). Felix was scared and sent Paul away. He was hoping that Paul would come to him later and give him some money. But the Bible doesn't say whether Felix was saved or not. At least from the story here, Paul's testimony to Governor Felix touched him a little, but Felix hadn't decided whether to accept Jesus Christ. At the end of Chapter 24, it records that after two years, Festus took over Felix's Governor position. He wanted to please the Jews, so he continued to imprison Paul. Many people opposed Paul's trip to Jerusalem. This included the prophet Agabus who prophesied that Paul would be bound in Jerusalem, but he did not prevent Paul from going. People in the modern prophetic movement believe that Agabus' prediction was half accurate and half inaccurate because Agabus prophesied that Paul would be bound by the Jews in Jerusalem. But in the end, Paul was bound by the Romans. Paul teaches us in the Bible not to treat prophecies with contempt but test them all; hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil (1 Thessalonians 5:20-22, NIV). Paul has done this with Agabus' prophecy. In the end, it turned out that Paul was right. Because it was recorded in Acts 23:11 (NIV), "The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, "Take courage! As you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome." This is the key sentence. It proved that Paul's decision to go to Jerusalem was encouraged by the Lord and that he would also testify in Rome as well. This explains why Paul had to appeal to Caesar. God's word prophesied and told him that he would go to Rome to testify about the Lord. The angel provided the direction he was to go in. Going to Rome was the will of God. But Satan tried his best to oppose the will of God by using the Jews in Jerusalem to attempt to kill Paul. After God defeated Satan's schemes through Paul's nephew and commander Lysias, Satan tried to use the Jews again to accuse Paul before Felix. But God used Paul to preach the gospel to Felix and his Jewish wife allowing Felix to hesitate and not agree with the Jew's request. After Festus took over Felix's Governor's position, he wanted to please the Jews in the beginning, so he kept Paul in prison. He also tried to persuade Paul to go to Jerusalem with him for trial. If Paul went to Jerusalem, he would definitely die. So Paul firmly refused and insisted on appealing to Caesar. After Festus had conferred with his council, he decided to send Paul to Caesar. The attitude of the council also affected Festus. Later, King Agrippa came and put Paul on trial. Paul gave Agrippa a good testimony. He talked about his experience where Jesus Christ appeared to him. Later, King Agrippa wavered from his position. Although he did not fully accept Jesus Christ, he was sympathetic towards Paul. In the end, he said that if Paul did not appeal to Caesar, Paul could have been set free. Acts 27 describes Paul boarding a ship and encountering a storm on his way to Rome. At first, Paul advised the centurion not to continue sailing, but they didn't listen. Later the soldiers planned to kill the prisoners when the storm continued to rage. But the centurion wanted to bring Paul safely through, so he kept the soldiers from doing it. In Acts 28, Paul was bitten by a snake, but God kept Paul safe again. Through God's signs and wonders, it opened the door to evangelism, and the gospel was preached to the Jews and others in Rome. From our description of Paul's journey, we can see Satan's actions - he tried to kill Paul or prevent him from going to Rome. God overcame Satan's schemes and brought Paul to Rome safely. The journey from Jerusalem to Rome was arduous for Paul. Jerusalem can be said to be the place where Paul was called since he was born and raised there. Although he met the Lord in Damascus, Paul also said that God had set him apart from his mother's womb. Rome was the last place where Paul preached the gospel and was martyred (this is where Paul had completed his mission). It could be a difficult journey from our calling to completing the mission God gives us. Through your journey, you may encounter many obstacles like the Jews trying to kill Paul or a wavering dignitary like Felix, Festus, and King Agrippa. God may send people to protect you and strengthen your faith, like Paul's nephew and the centurion. Peter spoke hastily to those who received the temple tax by telling them that Jesus would pay taxes. Jesus gently rebuked him but told him to throw a line into the water, and the first fish he caught would have a silver coin in its mouth to pay the tax for Jesus and Peter. I like fishing, but at times I spend the whole day and catch nothing. Even if Peter were a master fisherman, it wouldn't be easy to catch a fish with a coin in its mouth, but he caught one since the Lord declared it. The Bible doesn't say how long it took him to catch this particular fish. According to what Peter said in 2 Peter 1:19 (NIV): "We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts," Peter said, "No prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit" (2 Peter 1:20-21, NIV) Jesus gave Peter God's prophetic word when he told him to catch a fish with a coin in its mouth. Imagine Peter, who had fished for many nights without a catch receiving this word from the Lord. I'm sure it was difficult to accept, but knowing that all things are possible with God encouraged Peter and gave him confidence amid a depressing time. Peter was able to speak these words confidently because of his experience. Similarly, Paul faced so many obstacles and a lot of people trying to kill him. But he still firmly believed that he could reach Rome safely and testify before Caesar. What is the reason behind this? The reason lies in Acts 23:11 (NIV), which says, "The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, "Take courage! As you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome. "No matter how many challenges he would face, he knew that he would reach Rome safely because the Lord told him so. I've experienced God's promise in my life during my wife's ten years of infertility. In January 2016, I heard the Lord say that I would have a child that year. I returned to China in February and announced it to my family. Over time I experienced many people's unbelief and opposition, but I firmly believed it would happen because God said it. Before my wife's miraculous pregnancy in May, I experienced numerous attacks and ridicule from the enemy, but I persevered. Why? I stood on the word that the Lord gave me. By sharing my experience, I hope that the Lord will use it to comfort and bring hope to those who are facing difficulties and trying to hold on to God's promises. Hudson Taylor was an English missionary, who as a young boy, saw visions of countless Chinese people going to hell. He accepted the call to preach the Gospel in China. Unfortunately, he contracted a life-threatening disease while in medical school. A doctor declared his case hopeless and told him to go home and prepare to die. Hudson told the doctor that he would not die because God wanted him to preach the Gospel in China. The doctor refused to believe him. After miraculously surviving this disease, the first thing Hudson did was to testify to this doctor. The doctor was surprised and prayed to receive Christ as his Lord and Savior. Hudson encountered a severe storm after boarding a ship to China. He firmly declared that nothing bad would happen because God wanted him to go to China. On the evening of March 16, 2020, we prayed online with some members of our Bible Study group. We mainly spent time praying for China and the spread of the novel coronavirus. That night, I was taken up to heaven in the spirit, and I saw various spectacular scenes of China's future revival. The activities of worshiping God in different parts of China could only be described by the phrase "in full swing." In the end, I saw that the angels bound the opposing forces against God in China. God has enlightened me many times about China's great revival through dreams. I was in this vision and dreamed for two hours, from two to four in the morning. This experience, along with many other dreams, is God's promised word to me in these difficult circumstances, especially in the coronavirus outbreak. These words from God are like a light shining in a dark place. I value them even though I've encountered unbelief and derogatory remarks. I believe these difficult times will eventually pass. After the cleansing work of God is completed, a great revival will be released. I prepared myself for this, and I hope to encourage many Christians to see a bright future and not focus on the negativity around them. We are all like Paul. Our life is a process of walking from our call "Jerusalem" to the mission and end of our life, "Rome." Our mission is to come to Rome (which represents the world) to testify about the Lord. On our way there, we will encounter danger and opposition like what Paul experienced. But if we hold on to the words God has promised to us, we will be able to persevere to the end. We must also pay attention to prophetic words, just like paying attention to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. I hope that many fellow believers will see a bright future in the fog caused by the coronavirus.

For most of the Twelve Apostles, Luke the author of this book, mentions only their names, and that, only once. Whereas Peter and Paul are the main actors. In Acts 1 through 8, Peter is the primary actor and through Peter God offers the Kingdom to Israel. In Acts 9, God saves Paul and sends him to the Gentiles and it is only through Paul’s ministry that God tells us about the Body of Christ and the dispensation of Grace. As The Acts opens, it’s all Peter and then as God cuts off Israel and grafts in the Gentiles in the Body, the story transitions and as Peter fades out, Paul replaces him as the primary actor. Devotional 12-06-2020 by Max Peter - God of miracles by Lighthouse to the Nations
God built His church by working in a mighty way through His servants, the apostles. They were effective in their ministry because God's power was working through them. However, in following Peter in his personal ministry in this passage we can also see some aspects of Peter's ministry that helped make him effective. No doubt, it was God and His that ultimately made his ministry effective, but we can learn a lot from Peter as we examine how he went about doing the ministry God gave him. Peter can teach us a lot about how to be an effective servant.
This week, Pastor Nick Teny continues our series on 1st and 2nd Peter and explores what it means that we follow God, not a myth or a fable. If you have prayer requests, needs, would like to give, or just want to be more involved, check us out on our website or on Facebook. We would love to hear from you! https://www.gospelcc.net/ https://www.facebook.com/gccprice/
This episode features a conversation between Peter Van Valkenburgh - Director of Research at Coin Center, the leading non-profit focused on the policy issues facing cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin - and Muneeb Ali, CEO of Blockstack PBC. Peter and Muneeb discuss Coin Center’s mission and recent work, Facebook’s Libra Coin, the case for a true electronic cash, and more. 0:00:50 Peter's bio 0:01:09 Peter: "[Coin Center] was my first big job out of law school." 0:02:58 Muneeb: "You're OG now. When did Blockstack start sponsoring Coin Center?" 0:03:18 Peter: "Coin Center got its start in 2014. We got some really generous runway from a couple of donors who are just individuals who wanted to see a more adult advocacy organization in Washington, D.C. focused on this stuff." 0:04:56 Peter: "Coin Center is supposed to be an independent digital civil lIberties organization that goes and represents the underlying open technologies to Congress or to regulators." 0:06:08 Muneeb: "I simply say [the people at Coin Center]... actually understand this technology and they understand the regulations and the law, which is a rare combination. And they can be the right bridge between this technology and the various regulators or lawmakers." 0:06:29 Peter: "I think that's right. A lot of what we do I often think of as translation." 0:07:13 Peter: "More often than not we're explaining the law to lawyers in this space." 0:08:51 Peter: "There's no company - and all previous financial regulations - almost all - rely on finding a regulated entity and obligating that regulated entity to achieve the policy result that government wants." 0:09:37 Peter: "In the Bitcoin case, who's the issuer of the Bitcoin security?" 0:09:52 Peter: "Who in the Zcash space should be obligated for money laundering compliance?" 0:11:38 Muneeb: "One of my working theories is that Satoshi Nakamoto - whoever that person or group of individuals were - not only understood computer science, distributed systems, applied cryptography, and game theory, they actually knew securities regulation as well and that's why we don't know who is Satoshi Nakamoto." 0:12:42 Peter: "The policy objective that securities law seek to address are correcting the asymmetric information between issuers who are promising things to investors and the investors who've paid money to the investors." 0:13:51 Peter: "There are still the potential for information asymmetries. And I've sort of gotten into this debate with Angela Walch before about whether there's information asymmetries between software developers and the users of a software." 0:15:35 Muneeb: "Speaking of securities regulation I should just make a note here: we have a public filing with the SEC." 0:16:13 Peter: "From my perspective [Blockstack] has taken a really responsible and conservative approach to securities law compliance." 0:17:06 Peter: "I'm not a huge fan of the way we do investor protection in this country because it's very permissioned and it also excludes a lot of investors from participating." 0:18:58 Muneeb: "We actually had you host our Blockstack Summit in Berlin, and you interviewed Edward Snowden there. How was that experience? And has he been more active in the space? Or was that a one off thing?" 0:19:32 Peter: "That experience was awesome - it's still probably one of the craziest things I've ever done." 0:22:36 Peter: "I do think [Edward Snowden] has been quasi-active in the Zcash development community." 0:24:43 Peter: "He's worked on something really cool with the Freedom of the Press Foundation, which is if you have an old cell phone and want to turn it into an alarm system." 0:26:16 Muneeb: "Have you checked out any of the latest stuff that's been built on Blockstack?" 0:26:24 Peter: "I have a real interest in Graphite, which is the Google Docs type app." 0:27:05 Peter: "We've been looking for a long time for some sort of non-Google "Can't Be Evil" alternative to Google Docs." 0:29:29 Peter: "Network effects are a bitch, to put it a somewhat grotesque way. If you're talking about a communication system or a system where people pay each other, the systems that succeeded are not the ones that were best architected." 0:29:55 Peter: "Just look at all the attempts and failures at doing encrypted email." 0:30:16 Peter: "You're just going to default to the one everyone's on, even if it's not great for privacy." 0:32:32 Muneeb: "We're super excited to have [Neal Stephenson] at the 2019 Summit in San Francisco. I think Naval Ravikant is going to have a fireside chat." 0:33:40 Peter: "The Diamond Age describes Zcash." 0:36:01 Muneeb: "Coming back to this idea of decentralized applications - one model I have in my mind was when Linux was starting." 0:38:51 Peter: "Maybe decentralized apps will have their best success early on in those sort of niche enterprise / highly technical persons use-cases." 0:40:16 Peter: "Good luck getting a bunch of lawyers even to this day to group edit a Google Doc, let alone use Graphite." 0:40:24 Muneeb: "I think we knew that Linux won the server wars when even Microsoft started using Linux in their data centers." 0:40:32 Peter: "[Microsoft] has done a total 180, probably because they saw the writing on the wall as far as their consumer software business." 0:40:56 Muneeb: "What do you think of Facebook Libra?" 0:41:05 Peter: "I have a lot of thoughts about Facebook Libra. I should be careful about what I say because I don't want to be unfair." 0:41:30 Peter: "It's a really complicated system they're building that is still nonetheless permissioned. It's a permissioned blockchain." 0:42:29 Peter: "[Libra] is not an open blockchain. It's not a blockchain where anyone can add transactions to the ledger and independently verify the transactions." 0:43:15 Peter: "With Bitcoin, there's a lot of regulations that don't apply because it would be nonsensical to apply them because there isn't a centralized intermediary who you can trust to achieve the policy result you want." 0:43:32 Peter: "With Libra, that's not true at all. There are identified parties who you could trust to achieve the policy result you want." 0:43:56 Peter: "Even if you're an individual, you're not allowed to transact or interact economically with someone on the SDN list, like everyone in Iran." 0:44:42 Peter: "The Libra association is going to be this group of identified persons, which are really just corporations, including Facebook, Visa, and Mastercard. Whose laws are they going to comply with with respect to sanctions?" 0:45:21 Peter: "[Libra's] not censorship resistant cash. It's not really a cryptocurrency. It's just another payment rail. Why build it in such a complicated way?" 0:45:43 Peter: "Another thought is the whole reserve thing. So aside from being permissioned vs permissionless, Lbra is going to be asset-backed." 0:46:36 Peter: "If you are a company that has assets in a reserve, and people are trading - effectively - a pro-rata share of the value of those assets? That sounds like a security to me." 0:47:16 Peter: "And yet, I don't think there's plans to register Libra as a security because, frankly, if you did, it would be very useless as a currency, because it would only be allowed to be traded on securities exchanges." 0:48:09 Peter: "I've never seen such a rapid and aggressive response from members of Congress to a new tech project." 0:49:28 Muneeb: "Do you think the reaction from Washington is linked with some of the antitrust stuff as well?" 0:50:07 Peter: "Maybe they thought, 'This is us proving that we're investing in being less powerful'? Kind of like how they talk about WhatsApp a lot now." 0:51:03 Peter: "People in Congress ... are gonna say, 'This is Facebook, who some of us are already talking about anti-trust issues, and now they want to become the global reserve currency for all payments everywhere?" 0:51:40 Peter: "If any company is going to build a payments tool, they should build cryptocurrencies. I'm just disappointed they didn't basically fork Bitcoin or integrate it." 0:52:13 Muneeb: "That's what they say in the whitepaper, 'We're giving ourselves five years to figure out how to build an open system, but in the meanwhile - because of scalability - the only way to scale to a billion users is to use a closed system." 0:52:54 Peter: "I've heard a lot of people say that Move, the smart contract language [Facebook's] architected, is apparently extremely elegant." 0:53:17 Muneeb: "The motivation for Move is very similar to the smart contract language that we launched yesterday, Clarity." 0:54:38 Peter: "God knows that Solidity has had this particular issue where it's hard to know exactly what you just wrote in a smart contract until you launch it on Mainnet and someone breaks it in the DAO hack example." 0:55:44 Muneeb: "Ethereum is very interesting. They have a large community and kind of started everyone in the industry in a certain direction from a technology perspective. And I believe that most of those things were wrong." 0:57:05 Peter: "Maybe the network effects are just age-based, but it could also be this willingness to push stuff out there maybe before it's fully manicured or even fully compliant with the law." 0:57:51 Peter: "I should disclose that I'm a member of the Zcash Foundation's Board of Directors." 1:00:00 Muneeb: "I swear we're not doing this on purpose, but every decision we make ends up being the exact opposite of Ethereum." 1:04:13 Muneeb: "What's the biggest project you're spending your time on these days?" 1:05:50 Peter: "We were faced around a year and a half ago with, 'What's going to be a big issue in a year or two years? What do we need to start laying the groundwork on from a policy perspective now in order to have good policy outcomes later?'" 1:07:12 Peter: "Bitcoin, I think, ultimately needs to change and be more private and a lot of the privacy coins that we now see were originally proposed as amendments to the Bitcoin protocol." 1:08:38 Peter: "Any of the very public blockchains will ultimately need to find ways to obscure that transaction graph because, otherwise, we're gonna just be giving totalitarian states the best tool for mass surveillance that anyone's ever developed." 1:08:52 Peter: "So, with that in mind, we said 'What are the policy issues here?' And the big ones are anti money laundering law." 1:09:18 Peter: "Bank robbers use getaway cars. Even terrorists use encrypted messaging. This is just a reality, but that doesn't mean we should ban automobiles and encryption." 1:10:06 Peter: "We use the term 'electronic cash' because it's really like cash then. You can send it from one person to another, no one is in between, it's censorship resistant, and it doesn't leave a record." 1:10:23 Peter: "What if we get some sort of overbearing, overzealous response from policy makers that says we can't have these things anymore?" 1:11:51 Peter: "Most people have written about First Amendment issues here: ... if you're writing in computer code... it's still speech." 1:12:44 Peter: "What I don't think is a well enough explored area are the Fourth Amendment issues. The Fourth Amendment in the US says you need a warrant if you're a law enforcement and want to search somebody." 1:13:43 Peter: "Banks have been reporting our entire transaction history to governments whenever they ask, without a warrant, since 1970." 1:14:12 Peter: "The reason why that's constitutional in this context is because people willingingly hand over those records to banks during the regular course of business. ... You lose your reasonable expectation of privacy because your sharing it with a third-party." 1:15:09 Peter: "There's no reason for a developer to have all that private information about the users of their software. There's definitely a reason for a bank to have a bunch of information about the users of the bank." 1:15:48 Peter: "From a constitutional law standpoint... the only reason why it's okay for banks to bulk collect, surveil their users, and report that to government without a warrant, is that they have a reasonable business purpose to collect that information." 1:16:03 Peter: "There's no reasonable business purpose for an open source software developer to collect information about the users of their software - it just doesn't make sense." 1:16:29 Peter: "If it's interesting to your audience, I highly recommend you pick up our report. It's explained much more carefully and you don't need to be a lawyer or to have gone to law school to understand it." 1:17:33 Muneeb: "Where can people find you?" 1:17:37 Peter: "All our work at Coin Center is made public and made available at CoinCenter.org. And we rely on donations from people who are just excited about the technology and want to see good advocacy in DC." 1:18:18 Muneeb: "Blockstack is a supporter and we've been extremely happy with our involvement with Coin Center. They've been super helpful whenever we need them." 1:18:29 Muneeb: "Goodbyes." Preached on Sunday June 16'th by Pastor Phil Newby - First Peter 2:1-10
These verses introduce the third main section of 1 Peter -- God’s grace in suffering. It introduces an important point and that is that every other fear is conquered by the fear of the Lord. Peter quoted Isaiah 8 to back up his admonition in verse 15: “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts,” The setting of the Isaiah quotation is significant, Ahaz, the King of Judah, faced a crisis because of an impending Assyrian invasion.
This is the first sermon in a series of sermons through the book of 1 Peter. The sermon was given on 9/23/18 at Hillcrest Christian Church by Mike Crow.

[1 Peter] God in Three Persons, Blessed Trinity (Psalm 73, 1 Peter 1:1-12) - Rev. Jeff Hutchinson
Jesus knew Peter would deny him and warns him about it. Jesus looked past the denial to Peter's repentance and return, and told Peter God would not just forgive; He'd redeem.
Pastor Mike continues in 1 Peter talking about the great love God has for His children and how He proves it to us through judgment. Peter emphasizes this in our text today, how judgment begins in the house of God. Is this a way that God shows His love? Think about it this way, God loves us so much He wants everyone to be perfected and completely delivered from the bondage of sin. Suffering and judgment are the ways that God perfects His children. Sounds hard and difficult possibly but when we can grasp that God's intention is to make us the BEST we can be, then we can begin to accept and embrace the justice of his judgments now while we have opportunity to be changed. Listen in and be encouraged and challenged to love God more for all that He's doing to make us the best we can be for His glory...

Continuing in our study of 1 Peter, Pastor Mike discusses some very serious and yet common questions about suffering as Peter addresses his readers. Everyone suffers, though it may appear that some may more than others. Yet the questions are the same, why is suffering required? Without being able to answer specific questions, scripture is clear that suffering for Christ serves a bigger purpose that what may be evident at the time we're enduring it. From our temporary and "in the moment" perspective, we don't get it and we don't like it... But as we can learn to see God's bigger purposes for our life, we might have a better opportunity to see the purpose of at least some of the suffer He allows. Remember, God isn't surprised by the things that we're going thru, and for that we can be very thankful that He's totally aware of everything about our situation. This may not take away the pain in the moment, but hopefully it will help us understand what it means to share in the suffering as Christ suffered so that we can also share in His glory when it's revealed for all of eternity. Listen in to be encouraged that eternity is worth wait, so don't give up...

Peter - God teaches us that willingness to be used and a desire to submit to God are essential to God using us. We will struggle, but we can also overcome and allow God to turn our weaknesses into strengths. Allow God to use you this week.
Key Concept: Stand firm while you wait for His return.
Group Discussion Starters – 2 Peter – God's Patience Until The Day Of The Lord Divide the reading of 2 Peter 3 among three or four people. Make a note of difficult verses or questions you have as the chapter is read so they can be discussed later. Peter again states his purpose, as he sees his own time on the earth grow very short he is earnest that his readers pay attention to the words of the prophets, Jesus, especially as it relates to the judgement of God. And he warns them to pay no attention to false teachers. What will scoffers be saying in the last days? (3-4) But how does Peter say “the day of the Lord” will come? (9) What will happen when that day comes? (9) Read Malachi 4:1-2 Compare the difference of effect in the last day between evil-doers and those that fear God. Should believers fear or anticipate the day of the Lord? Since all these things will be dissolved, what should we believers do do? (11-12) What is awaiting those who follow Jesus? (v13) Read Revelation 21:1-8 to see John's vision of the future. What part of this description especially captures your imagination? What do you anticipate (or fear) about the certainty of that day? In 2 Peter 1:10 Peter says we can confirm our “calling and election” as God's people. In chapters 2 and 3 it becomes obvious in very serious terms why that is important. Since Peter says we know all these things now, what encouragement does he give us? (3:14-15)
