We are taking a heartwarming ride back to Walnut Grove with three beloved Little House On The Prairie cast members: Alison Arngrim, Dean Butler, and Karen Grassle, as they reunite to celebrate the show's enduring magic and to preview a new documentary and a Simi Valley cast reunion event in December, 2025.We explore why Little House continues to resonate across generations, drawing parallels to Star Trek and its devoted fan culture. Audiences still crave the sense of simplicity, community, and frontier resilience the series embodies.Karen Grassle shares the story of landing her very first series regular role as Caroline Ingalls after eight lean years as a struggling New York actor. The cast reflects on the unexpected typecasting that followed their time on the prairie, and Alison recalls the heady moment when, at age 12, she recognized the deliciously devious nature of her role, Prairie Bitch, Nellie Oleson. We delve into the legacy of Michael Landon, his uncanny eye for casting, his individualized directing style, and why guest stars adored working with him, while Karen offers a candid look at her complicated relationship with Michael and the challenges she faced as a women on that set.Alison and Dean walk us through the phenomenon of the Little House passport book, that allows Laura fans to mark every museum that celebrates the Ingalls family's history in their town. And the cast previews what will make the Simi Valley reunion truly special for enthusiasts, including meet-and-greets, photo-ops, breakfast with the cast, a screening of the 'Little House Homecoming' documentary and a tote bag!We also discuss the real, sometimes harsh conditions the actors faced on set, including rain, snow, fire and Victor French leaping into a freezing creek. And we get into the new Netflix limited series currently in production (though the original cast isn't officially involved, they share their openness to making appearances). And of course we make time for game time. How well does the cast know what takes place in the Books vs. the Series? And we play the IMDB Roulette Sub-Genre, Were You In it? This is a conversation that celebrates the past, embraces the future and shares the community of Little House. In current media --Fritz: The documentary Being Eddie on NetflixWeezy: Netflix movie, Train DreamsPath Points of Interest:LHOP Holiday cast reunion Dec 12 - 14th, 2025Little House Homecoming DocumentaryDean ButlerDean Butler on InstagramDean Butler on FacebookAlison Arngrim Alison Arngrim on InstagramAlison Arngrim on FacebookKaren GrassleKaren Grassle on InstagramLaura Ingalls Wilder Tour PassportConfessions Of A Prairie Bitch by Alison ArngrimPrairie Man by Dean ButlerBright Lights, Prairie Dust by Karen GrassleBeing Eddie Train Dreams

Grab your genealogy charts and your emotional-support bonnets, because this week we're diving into “Family Tree,” the episode where poor little Albert discovers that figuring out where you come from can be… complicated. When Miss Wilder assigns a genealogy project, Albert realizes his family tree looks a lot like the one from A Charlie Brown Christmas. Naturally, the children of Walnut Grove handle this delicate situation with the grace of a herd of stampeding cattle. Nothing says “friendship” quite like being called a “bastard” on a fishing trip, Laura being completely oblivious to Albert's emotional turmoil, and Nellie Oleson taunting him just for some good old-fashioned psychopath fun. (She's giving Matthew McConaughey in Dazed and Confused. In other words: LOSER.)Albert begs Pa to officially adopt him in an absolutely devastating, tear-jerking scene. (Where are the Emmys for Michael Landon and Matthew Labyorteaux?! Truly.) Pa, suddenly realizing that—oops—he probably should have adopted Albert already, decides to make it official. Big mistake! Albert's biological father is, gasp, ALIVE… and wants Albert back. Not out of love, not out of guilt—no, no. To work on his farm. What a heartwarming reunion! But Albert, being the clever, street-savvy kid he is, hatches a plan: he pretends to be blind, which quickly convinces his bio-dad that this whole fatherhood thing is not for him. Reversing course, he leaves Albert in Walnut Grove where he belongs—back with the Ingalls, where he is (finally!) and officially adopted. (Honestly, having a blind sister really does come in handy here.)“Family Tree” stands out as one of the most emotional episodes of Season 6, highlighting Albert's vulnerability, Charles' unwavering compassion, and the show's ongoing theme that families are made, not just born. But don't worry—your hosts keep the snark, nostalgia, and inappropriate giggling flowing throughout. Then, join us on Patreon, where Alison shares stories about her father, Thor Arngrim, and the surprising similarities between his childhood and this episode. Go to our socials on FB or IG for details! @littlehouse50podcast*Welcome back to the prairie, folks! This week's episode kicks off with an emotional gut punch and a couple of unforgettable new faces. Alison, Dean, and Pamela are back in their bonnets and breaking down “The Castoffs” — the episode that proves the prairie can be both heartwarming and emotionally devastating before the first commercial break. It's the episode where we first meet Kezia, the quirky, big-hearted newcomer who instantly becomes the talk (and target) of Walnut Grove. The town's moral compass goes spinning like a butter churn as everyone decides she's “too weird” to stick around. She's wonderfully played by Hermione Baddeley — basically the prairie's first free spirit. Also making his grand debut: Jonathan Garvey, everyone's favorite gentle giant. (OK, we know--He's a "Bear"!) But then — brace yourselves — it's not all laughs… because this episode also gives us one of the saddest Little House moments ever: Jack the dog's death. Laura's furry best friend crosses over the prairie rainbow bridge, and let's just say there wasn't a dry eye on or off screen...even shirtless Pa can't distract us from the sadness. As if that weren't enough, Laura takes out her heartbreak on Bandit, the adorable new pup who just wants to love her. It's a mix of laughter, heartbreak, and a few life lessons about loss, love, and letting new dogs into your heart. Then, join us on Patreon where Alison, Dean and Pamela discuss their pets!Join us in NYC! New York Times Best Selling author of “Confessions of A Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated”, Alison Arngrim is best known to viewers world-wide for her portrayal of the incredibly nasty “Nellie Oleson” on the much loved, long running hit television series "Little House On The Prairie," and continues to amuse audiences through her many film, television, stage and multi-media appearances.
Ah, love is in the air… and so is a ton of dust. This week, we're recapping The Wedding — the much-anticipated union of Mary Ingalls and Adam Kendall! But before they can say “I do,” they have to say, “Susan!? I'm here!!” thanks to the most dramatic windstorm this side of Walnut Grove. That's right, the very “Sandstorm” that inspired Pamela to create “Livin' On a Prairie”!But hold onto your bonnets, because while everyone's trying to see through the dirt and drama, Mary is fully sporting her French tip nails while searching for Susan, (the most annoying character in Little House history, according to Pamela). In this episode, we break down:Adam's wedding proposal—Sweet? Or terrible?Mary's hair - so many questions... Rev. Alden ain't got nothing on no Sandstorm! Nothing says “happily ever after” like saying ‘I do' in 60-mile-an-hour winds, so join us as we ride out this romantic whirlwind of Little House history. You'll find yourself shouting, "Susan?! Boo! It's Halloween in Walnut Grove, and Laura's seen… something horrifying. Or so she thinks. This week, Dean, Alison and Pamela slice into the legendary (and hilariously gory) “Monster of Walnut Grove” — the closest thing Little House ever got to a horror movie!Laura's convinced she's witnessed Nels Oleson chop off Harriet's head — (you know, the usual small-town drama) -- and she goes full prairie panic. She's up all night with nightmares, haunted by visions of poor Harriet's severed head. With the help of her BFF, Carl, they share this dark secret--until Nellie and Willie get involved.Meanwhile, Nels has no idea that Laura thinks he is a decapitating murderer. Spoiler alert — he isn't. It wasn't Harriet's head. It was a new (and terrifying) mannequin for the store.Alison dishes on the behind-the-scenes madness in filming this episode, from Jonathan Gilbert, Richard Bull and Michael Landon. So grab your pumpkin spice coffee, settle in by the flickering lantern light, and get ready for a howling good time on the prairie.Spoiler alert: No Harriets were harmed in the making of this episode. Then, join us on Patreon, where Alison and Dean take a deep dive into all things Michael Landon, in honor of what would have been his 89th birthday this Halloween.Links and Resources:Haven't signed up for Patreon yet? Nels & Mollie Sitting in a Tree (K-I-S-S-I-N-G… sorta) Hold onto your bonnets, folks—Nels Oleson is LIVING. HIS. BEST. LIFE.This week, we dive into Season 6's “Second Spring,” aka the midlife crisis episode we didn't know we needed. Nels finally gets fed up with Harriet, Nellie, and Willy's constant harping and dinner demands, and decides it's time to take a little “business trip” … and maybe find himself a little happiness while he's at it.Cut to: Nels, free at last, living his prairie bachelor fantasy at a charming boarding house run by Mollie — a sweet Irish beauty with a soft brogue, a warm heart, and the kind of kindness Harriet wouldn't recognize if it smacked her with a bonnet. Suddenly, Nels is smiling again, cracking jokes, and looking suspiciously like a man who's discovered the meaning of life (and maybe love) over a cup of tea.Meanwhile, back in Walnut Grove, Harriet realizes something terrifying: Nels might actually not come back. Cue full panic mode. It's possibly the most begrudging display of vulnerability ever committed to frontier television. Will Nels leave his life for Mollie's kindness and her lilting accent? Or will Harriet's last-ditch charm offensive win him back? Either way, the Olesons are serving up one of the wildest emotional rollercoasters this side of Plum Creek. (Is it just me or are we kind of rooting for Team Nels & Mollie?)Tune in as we unpack this one, and celebrate the fact that—for one glorious episode—Nels Oleson said “I choose me.”Then, join us on Patreon where Dean and Alison talk all things Richard Bull!Links and Resources:Haven't signed up for Patreon yet? The wheat is gone. The money is gone. Manly's will to get out of bed? Also gone.We continue our recap of this epic 2-parter. Almanzo is deep in his "sad cowboy era," refusing to walk, talk, or touch a plow — basically throwing a full-grown frontier tantrum. Laura, now very postpartum and very fed up, decides it's time for some tough prairie love. No more babying the baby.Part 2 brings peak pioneer angst. Manly's in a funk, Laura's at her limit, and even the baby's like, “Y'all okay?”We unpack the emotional barn showdown, Eliza Jane's dramatic exit, and Laura's transformation from supportive wife to motivational drill sergeant. A storm may have wrecked the farm, but not the Wilder spirit… eventually. This week, Laura and Manly are living their best prairie lives — baby on the way, cozy house, a wheat crop with dollar signs in their eyes. Naturally, that means disaster is RIGHT around the corner. In true Little House fashion, Manly goes from "proud wheat daddy" to “just a little sick” to “I had a stroke and now I'm spiraling into a full-on pioneer pity party.” Meanwhile, Laura's out here doing it all — farming, caregiving, and surviving her sister-in-law Eliza Jane's smothering brand of “help.”Disaster Bingo Begins!Diphtheria? Check.Stroke? Double check.Massive financial setback? Oh honey, we're just getting warmed up.Emotional spiral? Eliza Jane is gonna Eliza Jane. Little House on the Prairie was a worldwide television phenomenon and its stars became household names. Think Michael Landon, Melissa Gilbert and our guest this week, Alison Arngrim. Alison played the spoiled, snobbish bully Nellie Oleson. Not exactly the most likeable character on the show, but certainly one of most most talked about. Here, Alison shares her incredible story of getting the part, how it changed her life - both then and now - and insights from her experiences of being on such a massive hit television show. Alison loves the kitchen and has a cookbook in the works as well as a treasure trove of YouTube cooking videos, so we also get some very handy kitchen tips from the former restaurateur of Walnut Grove! Our Food Poll is more British in origin. We ask if the chip butty takes your fancy. This week, Harriett Oleson gets a big greasy idea — why waste time with flour sacks and morals when you can sell only 3 staple meals (that don't include Ma's famous pie) to the masses? It's the future! It's delicious! It's... soul-crushing!Harriet goes full MLM boss babe, Nels instantly regrets his entire life, Caroline Ingalls gets roped into an apron of shame--even on Sundays!, and Charles devises the plan of all plans like the Prairie lawyer he should have been.Spoiler: No one's loving the future. So grab a drumstick and join us as we break down Walnut Grove's brief, greasy descent into commercialism, culinary betrayal, and food crimes against humanityThen, join us on Patreon where we discuss more behind the scenes moments from this episode!Links and Resources:Haven't signed up for Patreon yet? Saddle up and hold onto your suspenders, folks — this week we're diving headfirst into Season 3, Episode 9: The Bully Boys (Or, “When Walnut Grove Got Its First Redneck Crime Family”). This is the unforgettable episode where Walnut Grove gets a visit from the backwoods version of the Sopranos. It's a classic Little House setup: a peaceful town, hardworking families, and then BOOM — 3 traveling disasters in overalls roll in and run on petty theft, sexual harassment, and a general hatred for women.Reverend Alden, in peak form, preaches forgiveness, kindness, and second (and third and fourth) chances — all while being comically gullible enough to ask the literal worst humans on earth to please be nice. (We love him, but someone get this man a lie detector and a background check!)Meanwhile, Nellie Oleson becomes a full-blown mob wife, Mary sports a black eye and the only backbone in town, and Ma drops the eggs! (It's horrific!)The moral dilemma of turning the other cheek vs. punching a Galender in the jaw is at an all time high But fear not — the real MVPs are the townspeople, who finally remember they can also have a mob mentality when they want to. The episode's real message? Sometimes, good Christian values mean letting the community unite to remove evil... with fists. It's all here — heart, humor, violence, and hillbillies. Welcome to the frontier, where even the church isn't safe from crime, but the community always comes out on top.Then- join us on Patreon where Alison talks to Dean and Pamela about the villains of Walnut Grove…and that Bubba was actually pretty cool in real life.Links and Resources:Haven't signed up for Patreon yet? Grab your bonnets and brace yourselves—because Walnut Grove is officially wired for chaos! In this episode, the town installs a shiny new telephone system... and within minutes, the gossip starts flying faster than Caroline's flapjacks. With Mrs. Oleson lurking like the prairie's nosiest switchboard operator. Privacy? Never heard of her.Meanwhile, Jonathan and Alice Garvey's marriage is hanging by a thread—and it's not a sturdy one. A few misheard messages, a splash of suspicion, and BOOM: Jonathan finds out that Alice has a secret first husband--Harold! (Yep, she's got more baggage than Doc Baker's medical bag.)Meanwhile, Alison and Pamela unpack the deeply unsettling thoughts about Harold—revealing a shocking backstory that involves grooming, manipulation, and trauma that Little House only hints at. You'll never look at this episodethe same way again. (eek!)Join us as we untangle the wild wires of “Crossed Connections,” where gossip spreads faster than wildfire, trust is on life support, and the only thing more scandalous than the phone lines is Alice Garvey's marital history. Welcome to a Very Special Episode: Ma's Hair Is Down & Everything Goes to Hell (almost!).This week on Little House 50 Podcast, we dive headfirst into an episode that has it all: emotional turmoil, slow-burn temptation, passive-aggressive teenage angst, and… Ma's hair down. Yes, DOWN. That's when you know things are about to get spicy on the prairie.Charles hops on a wagon and leaves for a job, so Caroline hires a handsome, mysteriously single handyman named Chris to finish the kitchen extension. He's good with tools. Very good. Suspiciously good. Soon, he's hammering more than nails—he's hammering his way into Ma's heart.Mary, ever the emotionally intelligent eldest child, smells drama from a mile away and starts throwing shade with the precision of a seasoned Real Housewife of Sleepy Eye. Honestly? She's kind of a bitch in this episode—but like, a justified bitch. We support her.Meanwhile, Laura is blissfully unaware that her family is one flirty barn-raising away from a full-blown scandal. And then there's Ma. Sweet, proper, dutiful Ma—until suddenly, she's got her hair down and a suspiciously candlelit glow in the kitchen. You don't let your hair down in Walnut Grove unless you're catching feelings or catching trouble. And honestly, if anyone earned the right to slap Nellie into next Tuesday, it's Mary in this episode. Will Laura keep calling him “Uncle Chris,” even though he is giving major stranger danger with a toolbox energy?! Girl. Will Ma go there?? (She won't... but we all kinda wanted her to for a second.)Grab your bonnet and your prairie popcorn—this episode is pure frontier soap opera.Let's get into it.Then, join us on Patreon where Alison and Pamela chat about the recent Little House event in Indiana, and a preview of episodes to come!Links and Resources:Haven't signed up for Patreon yet? We recorded this episode back in late July—when Pamela was still in New Hampshire and Alison was halfway across the world. A lot has changed since then, but one thing hasn't: this episode is still an absolute gem. We're diving into “Meet Me at the Fair”—a wild ride through carnival chaos featuring questionable parenting, a gang of literal jackasses, unsettling Renaissance Fair/Hannibal Lecter cosplay vibes, and of course, the real star of the show: a hot air balloon. All we ask is one thing: Make. It. Make. Sense. Join us for a hilarious conversation as we do our best not to laugh our way through the absurdity of “Meet Me at the Fair.” (And yes—you'll actually find yourself rooting for Carrie in this one.)Then, join us on Patreon, where Alison and Dean share behind-the-scenes stories with Pamela about filming and other goings-on in Old Tucson. Today we're diving into one of Nellie Oleson's greatest hits (of villainy): The Talking Machine! Where nothing says "I love you" more than...SCIENCE.Laura gets bamboozled by 1800s high-tech: a talking machine (a phonograph!) that repeats what you say—perfect for confessing your secret crushes, unless that machine falls into the wrong hands. Which it does. (Cue Nellie). Chaos, blushing, and frontier-level pre-teen drama ensue, proving once again that nothing spreads faster than gossip in a town with 12 people and no Wi-Fi.Laura and Nellie find themselves pining for the same older, blonde man, Miss Beadle sees no issue with sending kids into a lightning storm, and Laura kills yet another tree—all in the name of love. Then join us on Patreon, where special guests Pamela Roylance and Stan Ivar—the Carters!—sit down with us to share stories about their time on Little House on the Prairie. Today, we're joined by two very special guests—the Carters themselves! Pamela Roylance and Stan Ivar are here to discuss the episode “Alden's Dilemma” and share some of their favorite memories from Little House on the Prairie. But that's not all!Pamela and Stan are also starring in A.R. Gurney's beloved play Love Letters, directed by none other than Little House casting director Susan McCray. You can catch them live at the Whitefire Theatre, starting tonight—August 21st through August 31st!In “Alden's Dilemma,” Mr. Edwards smells trouble—and it's not just his long johns. A suspiciously charming young minister arrives in Walnut Grove, and suddenly, he's getting more house calls from Laura and Mrs. Carter than Doc Baker during flu season. Naturally, Edwards assumes the worst: romance, scandal, and maybe even poetry. Meanwhile, poor Reverend Alden starts to wonder if he's about to be replaced by a younger model with better hair and shinier sermons.Meanwhile, in a completely unrelated subplot that feels like it wandered in from another show, Almanzo and John Carter take a bro-trip to San Francisco, where they stay in a Japanese-style hotel, get mugged by a sweet-looking grandma, tossed in jail, and generally fumble their way through the city like two prairie dads lost in a big-city sitcom. We're back from our hiatus and ready to celebrate summer—and nothing says summer in the United States quite like the 4th of July. This year, we're revisiting "Centennial", a poignant and eerily prescient episode we believe everyone should watch. It's a powerful reminder for those who may have lost sight of the promise of America—both in these turbulent times and in difficult eras past.Far from your typical holiday celebration, "Centennial", starring the incomparable Theodore Bikel, sneaks up on you like a shadow at sunset—quiet, slow, and suddenly all around you. Its message feels more vital than ever, delving into themes of patriotism vs. dissent, economic hardship and civic disillusionment, the immigrant experience, and the enduring ideals of democracy. In the darkest moments, it's easy to lose hope—but this episode offers light and perspective to anyone feeling disheartened by today's world. Today Alison Celebrates the 7th Anniversary of The Alison Arngrim Show. Come Join The Fun with special guests:
My returning guests are beloved for their roles as Nellie Oleson and Almanzo Wilder on Little House on the Prairie. We reminisce about their time on the show, their enduring friendship, current projects, and much more.
Alison Arngrim aka Nellie Oleson from Little House on the Prairie joins John Landecker to talk about her one-woman show and her latest book, Confessions of A Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated. Catch Alison live at Chicago's Motor Row Theater tomorrow, June 12th!
Dean and Alison are just a day away from the Little House on the Prairie Cast Reunion at Columbia State Historic Park—but there's still plenty of time to recap one of the funniest episodes in Little House history! This week, we dig into “Here Come the Brides” (Season 4), where we come to a shocking realization: almost every Little House wedding is a surprise wedding. Seriously—BOOM. No invitations. No planning. Just, “Surprise! You're hitched!”This episode has it all: Nellie in full teenage heat (seriously, someone hand her a fan), Mrs. Oleson attempting homicide, and little Willy not giving even half a hoot. Pig farming somehow becomes sexy, Miss Beadle (the fabulous Charlotte Stewart) becomes a Mrs., and Nellie is crowned the Pig Queen of Minnesota…for approximately ten minutes.Alison shares some epic behind-the-scenes stories—how Jonathan Gilbert came up with that pratfall, what it was like working with “Luke,” and the sneaky way Charlotte helped cast her future husband in the show. She also reflects (with just a tiny bit of cringing) on just how, uh… aggressively enthusiastic Nellie was in this one. It's pure comedy gold. And of course—join us on Patreon, where Alison spills even more tea about this episode. Trust us, it's worth it.Links and Resources:Haven't signed up for Patreon yet? We live out Mary's childhood fever dreams as Alison Arngrim returns and brings along her friend Dean Butler. We get really into the weeds around hot dogs, and Alison once again plays it smart and brought hot dogs to the hot dog episode. We also talk about the upcoming new adaptation of Little House on the Prairie.
We kick things off with Alison's whirlwind NYC adventure and her sold-out smash, Confessions of a Prairie Bitch! (Turns out being mean on TV still packs a house.) Dean and Alison are now setting their sights on June's California Gold Country event—sunscreen and bonnets at the ready! Meanwhile, Pamela's busy on the stage (and working her pattooty off!) with her off-Broadway show Cracked Open, now playing through June. Then—grab the tissues and cuddle your fur baby—we dive into one of the most tender, tear-jerking episodes of Little House: “Remember Me,” featuring the legendary Patricia Neal. This is the episode that gave us that line:“Remember me with smiles and laughter, for that is how I'll remember you. If you can only remember me with tears, then don't remember me at all.”(It's so iconic, they literally put it on Michael Landon's epitaph. Yes. Really.) Who knew this episode would end up eerily reflecting Michael's own life just a few years later? Ugh.But don't worry—it's not all heartbreak and handkerchiefs! We also get a wedding! Isaiah and Grace finally tie the knot and step into parenthood like pros. From sorrow springs love, and new beginnings. This two-parter has everything: death, love, puppies, and yes—Pa's famously quivering lip.Want even more? Dean and Alison catch us up on their recent adventures at the Cherry Blossom Festival (spoiler: it was charming, floral, and probably involved a President's grandchild). We dip a toe into Waltons territory—just don't say the “W” word around Pamela! And we've got an update on Baby Carrie, courtesy of the Greenbush twins themselves. Then it's back to basics with the Season 2 premiere of Little House on the Prairie, “The Richest Man in Walnut Grove.” This episode is a beautiful reminder of the show's core values—delivered with simplicity, warmth, and just enough hardship to cue the waterworks before the opening credits are done rolling. (Yes, it starts with cow-milking. Yes, we're already crying.)The economic woes of the 1870s hit uncomfortably close to home for 1970s viewers—and, honestly, still hit today. Charles is broke (again), Mrs. Oleson is insufferable (as usual), Nellie and Willie are on their villain era tour (standard), and Ma and the girls show up as the resilient queens they are (per tradition). And Miss Whipple? She's quietly running the town with a thimble in one hand and perhaps an illegal mani-pedi operation in her basement. Or is that just Pamela's theory? Regardless... she's a total Boss B.Of course, in true Little House fashion, there's a moral twist: it's not about money, it's about love, community, and the kind of hard-earned respect you can't buy at Olsen's Mercantile. After all, Pa may be broke, but he's rich in love, sweat, and suspenders. Then, join us on Patreon! Alison was still in Paris having her Prairie Bitch adventures (with the infamous French mouse) during the recording of this episode, the weather is starting to warm up in NYC, and in exciting news, Dean announces he's writing a new book! (Yay!!!) Then, we discuss the episode where Alison even hates herself. That's right, we're talking about “The Music Box”, from Season 3—where villainy is real, and cruelty reigns. We're talking “peak evil”. WHY, Nellie, WHY?! Alison explains why this episode was especially tough for her on a personal level (remember, Alison is really nice in real life!). Katy Kurtzman, who plays the stuttering Anna, earns her stripes as a Little House GOAT of co-stars who joins the Vortex of Characters We Fall In Love With Whom We Never See Again. Pamela diagnoses Nellie as a certified psychopath, and gives a quick crash course on the difference between a sociopath vs. psychopath. (She cracked the Nellie code!) It's Laura's birthday in this episode (what month is it? Who cares—Walnut Grove is in eternal spring/summer!) and a failed birthday present leads to a passionate robbery. Sort of. We've got ridiculous nightmare sequences, bad fake fiddle playing, and Mary's big-sister energy on overdrive. (Hint: don't mess with her beauty sleep!). And in the end, did Nels use the strap? You decide. The moral of this episode: Don't get your kid a dictionary for their birthday. Season 3 cranked Nellie's sadism to a whole new level—and we had a blast recapping this one! Then join Pamela, Dean, and Alison over on Patreon where Alison and Dean and Pamela talk about things we cannot air on the podcast...Don't forget to subscribe, comment, leave a review, and share this episode with fellow Bonnetheads.Links and Resources:Haven't signed up for Patreon yet? Alison shares her Paris adventures (yes, including some rodent encounters), Dean dishes on their exciting new ventures with Prairie Legacy Productions, and Pamela goes on a rant against possums (apologies to the possum lovers out there). But then—on to the main event! We're recapping another standout episode from Season 1: “School Mom”. Caroline Ingalls steps in as the earthy and compassionate substitute teacher, helping a student in need named Able. And we ask the most important question:Why does Able look like he's 42 years old?Able was played by Dirk Blocker, the son of Bonanza legend Dan Blocker and the best friend and mentor of Michael Landon, and shockingly, was only 17 when the episode was filmed. After his father, Dan's passing, Michael Landon brought Dirk into the Little House family to honor his dad's legacy—and wow, did he deliver.Alison and Dean also reveal a shocking tidbit about Miss Beadle's stunt double (you won't believe it!) and ask the pressing question: where does Miss Beadle actually live?Pa steps up in peak “Chesty Charles” fashion, cooking dinner for Caroline after her long day of teaching (ladies, we all know how hot that is—gentlemen, take notes). We also dive into how the relationship between Karen Grassle and Michael Landon shifted over time, leading to Karen's role being gradually diminished. Alison opens up about how this impacted her and the rest of the cast—and how Karen still showed up, always delivering powerful, heartfelt performances. And of course, no Little House episode recap is complete without calling out the real villains of the Prairie: the school children. Seriously, Walnut Grove, do better! Honestly, the level of petty in that classroom (including Mrs. Oleson) is chef's kiss terrible. This Ma-centric episode is a beautiful example of empathy, compassion, and patience. It tugs at every heartstring and proves once again why Caroline Ingalls remains the #1 mom of all time. Today on a special Too Opinionated we celebrate fifty years of Little House on the Prairie and the announcement of a new Netflix adaption by chatting with cast members Dean Butler and Alison Arngrim. TV fans around the world remember Arngrim as Nellie Oleson, the acid-tongued hellcat – declared “TV history's #1 one bitch” by Vanity Fair – who tormented pure, sweet Laura Ingalls for seven years on “Little House on the Prairie.” In Confessions of a Prairie B*tch, Arngrim offers a riotous evening of anecdotes, stand-up comedy, and multimedia content about life as the scorned yet beloved devious pre-teen, complete with frilly petticoats and curls. The one-woman stage show made its debut in New York City in 2002 and has since become a global sensation, drawing packed houses in the U.S. and abroad. The hit show spawned Arngrim's record breaking New York Times Best Selling memoir, similarly titled "Confessions of a Prairie B*tch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated" (Harper Collins). Cast at twenty-two years old, Butler had no idea of the lasting impact being cast in Little House on the Prairie would have on him. Having previously starred in Judy Blume's Forever with Stephanie Zimbalist, Butler was fresh- faced and naïve to Hollywood, eager to make his mark. He found his home in the Prairie and embraced his fellow cast members as family. Butler's passion for honest-to-goodness entertainment began in the Prairie and followed him throughout his rich career of acting, producing, and directing. PRAIRIE MAN: My Little House Life & Beyond (on sale June 25, 2024; HC, $28.00) by Dean Butler shares the behind- the-scenes of Little House on the Prairie on a heartfelt journey of “good luck, good television, and the very good— if gloriously imperfect—people who made it so.” Cast as Almanzo, Laura Ingalls' starring love interest, Butler captured the enduring affection of fans and co-stars alike. With a foreword from Melissa Gilbert (Laura) and Alison Arngrim (Nellie), this uplifting memoir follows Butler's journey from childhood to the Prairie and beyond. On this week's motivation monday, I'm talking to Alison Arngrim. New York Times Best Selling author of Confessions of A Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated, Alison Arngrim is best known to viewers world-wide for her portrayal of the incredibly nasty “Nellie Oleson” on the much loved, long running hit television series Little House On The Prairie, and continues to amuse audiences through her many film, television, stage and multi-media appearances. Her one woman show Confessions of a Prairie Bitch, which started at Club Fez in New York in 2002, has now become a world-wide phenomenon, having been performed to packed houses in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Green Bay, San Francisco, Seattle, and in France, where Arngrim performs entirely in French to standing room only crowds in her all-French version titled: Confessions d'une Garce de La Prairie and La Malle aux Tresors de Nellie Oleson. As a stand-up comedian, Arngrim has headlined at nightclubs such as the Laugh Factory, the Comedy Store and the Improv in Los Angeles; as well as the Laurie Beechman Theatre in New York and assorted comedy venues across the United States and Canada. She is currently starring in two comedy series pilots: Life Interrupted, as the ex-wife of commercial child star Mason Reese, with Erin Murphy, (“Bewitched”) as her new wife and Dawn Wells, (“Gilligan's Island), as her mother, as well as, C.P.R. – Child Performers Resurrection Talent Agency, as an ex-child star gone wrong, trying to save herself and her assorted misfit cohorts by opening a talent agency. Arngrim has mocked her status as an “ex-child star” on Jay Leno's Tonight Show, during their month-long parody, “Hollywood Survivor” and continues to be a frequent interview subject on everything from A&E, “E! Entertainment, TV Land and VH-1, to CNN and the Travel Channel. The TV Land network honored her undying image as TV's worst bitch, by declaring her the winner of their 2006 award for, “Character Most Desperately In Need Of A Time Out.” She starred in the heartwarming, gay, Christmas cult classic, Make the Yuletide Gay, as the overbearing “Heather Mancuso.” Her other television and film appearances include, Livin' the Dream, Tinder & Grinder, The Bilderberg Club, For the Love of May with Ru Paul and Patricia Neal, and The Last Place On Earth with Billy Dee Williams and Phyllis Diller. In 2007, she began her foray into French cinema with the role of “Edith” in the French detective comedy, Jean Pierre Mocky's Le Deal. Her stage work includes, The Vagina Monologs, Sirena: Queen of the Tango, Dear Brutus, The Wool Gatherer, the French bedroom farce, In One Bed And Out The Other, Michael Kearns' AIDS/US II, “Rita” in the 2005 GLAAD Award nominated production of Last Summer At Bluefish Cove, the somewhat off kilter “Reverend Pat Miass” in Joni and Gina's Wedding, and the Ovation Award Nominated musical-drama, Flirting with Morty, as the abusive, trashy and tragic Ray Lee. In her spare time, she takes tourists on the rollicking comedy outing, Nasty Nellie's Tour of Hollywood, (featured at Dearly Departed Tours), where she simultaneously enlightens and amuses passengers with behind the scenes tales from both Hollywood history and her own life. Offstage, Arngrim has been a dedicated and compassionate AIDS activist for nearly three decades, volunteering for AIDS Project Los Angeles and Tuesday's Child, an organization assisting children and families affected by HIV and AIDS. In addition, Arngrim currently serves as California Chair, National Spokesperson and Founding Board Member on the National Advisory Board of The National Association to Protect Children, or PROTECT.org, fighting to give children a legal and political voice in the war against child abuse.
We kick things off with a little chat about Alison Balson, who played the unforgettable Nancy Oleson, along with some fond (and hilarious) memories from Dean and Alison. Here's a quick shout-out to Nancy—she brought a whole new level of wild to Walnut Grove! Let's hear it for a little Nancy love! Now, cue the bug spray and brace yourself—it's time for The Campout! An epic misadventure in the great outdoors where the Olesons and the Ingalls attempt a relaxing weekend of camping, (spoiler: no one was relaxed), a questionable school project and some very odd ideas of what one would consider a "vacation".This episode marks the beginning of Katherine MacGregor's comedic brilliance on the show, while also giving us a peek into Mrs. Oleson's more vulnerable side. Yes, underneath all the feathers and finger-pointing, she's got feelings! And this peek behind the curtain only deepened our love-hate obsession with her. It also opened up a whole new dimension to the Olesons and deepened our love-hate relationship with them. Especially the hate part.Alison spills the tea on what the Olesons were actually eating at that dinner table, how they filmed the now-iconic floating-down-the-river moment (it was way more dangerous than it looked), and the very creative (read: gross) way she and Melissa Gilbert stayed warm in their wetsuits. Let's just say it involved a bodily function and a lot of friendship. Dean and Alison also dive into Katherine MacGregor's unique approach to her role, including how she wove elements of her real life into many of Mrs. Oleson's unforgettable moments. And finally, things get real when Pamela asks the question we didn't know we needed:“What's your damage, Pa?!”Grab your bonnet, pour some of Ma's coffee, get out your anti-itch ointment, and join us for a laugh-filled, memory-soaked deep dive into one of the most delightfully chaotic episodes Little House ever gave us. This one's a classic! Then join Pamela, Dean, and Alison over on Patreon for an honest and heartfelt conversation about the growing negativity on Little House social platforms. We're taking a stand against toxic, bigoted, and harmful behavior from those who, somehow, believe there's space for hatred in the world of Walnut Grove. It's a powerful moment of reflection, solidarity, and setting the record straight—and one you won't want to miss.Don't forget to subscribe, comment, leave a review, and share this episode with fellow Bonnetheads.Links and Resources:Haven't signed up for Patreon yet? **Warning**: If you, like Dean, have never read the beloved novel *Little Women* or watched any of its movie adaptations, brace yourself—you may not fully grasp the emotional weight of today's episode recap: "Little Women"! (Honestly, Dean Butler, how *dare* you!) In this episode, we meet more characters that we end up falling in love with, only to never see them again (you know, the infamous *Vortex of Special Guests* from the multiverse?). But let's get down to the real issues: Why are the wigs so distractingly bad in this episode? Is Jenny indeed Mrs. Beadle's long-lost daughter? Does Nellie's intense, pantomimed sewing session make you...uneasy? And seriously, why does Ma scrubbing the bare floor make you *so* tired just watching it? Plus, Pamela and Alison share their *uncomfortable* “groomer vibes” from one of the main characters, and we take a detour to *Frontier House* on PBS to remind ourselves that a solid stockpile of chopped wood is *essential* for prairie life! Alison also spills the tea on the real-life inspiration for her character, Nellie Oleson, and uncovers some surprising connections to this episode, along with juicy behind-the-scenes gossip about Katherine MacGregor and Jonathan Gilbert! In a moment of sheer brilliance, we even compare the *Little House* characters to Muppets—and yes, we're calling out Miss Piggy specifically! Lastly, Alison cracks the mystery of *why* Baby Carrie takes that tumble down the hill in the opening credits. You won't want to miss it! Then join Pamela, Dean and Alison on Patreon! Spring is in the air—even for Alison in France! Hard to believe it's been over a year since the Simi Valley 50th Anniversary event. It feels like yesterday and a lifetime ago… and we're still recovering. HA! Today, we're diving into our first Season 7 episode recap: The In-Laws—a whirlwind of absurd hilarity starring our favorite duo, Dean Butler and Michael Landon. This episode serves up Pa/Almanzo tension in the silliest way possible, blending slapstick humor with some questionable frontier authenticity (mountains on the prairie, anyone?). Michael Landon's comedic brilliance shines, but let's be real—this episode asks us to completely suspend our belief in historical accuracy. And these days? That kind of creative license wouldn't fly in TV production, which makes us even more curious (and hopeful!) about the upcoming Netflix adaptation. Meanwhile, the 1800s patriarchy is alive and well, as bet-making seems to be totally fine with Ma and Laura. We also have Alison's infamous pickle-and-ice-cream moment, plus Percival and Doc Baker's utterly maddening reaction to her *gasp* gaining weight. Oh, the joys of period-accurate sexism… Other highlights include:Albert rocking some impressive peach fuzzGarvey's return (and a shirtless Andy for all you Teen Beat fans!)The telephone playing a surprisingly important roleAnd seriously—can someone take Mary out to a restaurant for once?!And of course, no chaotic trip to Sleepy Eye would be complete without the comedic genius of Eddie Quillan, who steals the show as Cavendish, Pa's latest nuisance. Dean and Alison also pull back the curtain on the technical side of Little House, dishing about the extensive voiceover work (aka "looping") that was a staple of the show—much to Dean's chagrin. And finally, the real question: Did Michael Landon wax his chest? We get to the bottom of it -- Only on The Little House 50 Podcast, where we discuss the truly important Prairieverse matters! Then join Pamela, Dean and Alison on Patreon! Alison is still living the French dream, while Dean teases us with hints of another thrilling Little House event. Meanwhile, Pamela cozies up with her puppy as we dive into this week's recap of “The Collection”—an episode featuring two of the biggest stars of the era, Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. This is, without a doubt, the juiciest episode of the podcast we've ever recorded! We reveal never-before-heard details about what was happening behind the scenes, including the real reason Melissa Gilbert wasn't in this episode. And yes, we even get confirmation straight from Melissa herself during a live text session! You'll also find out why Pamela has an unexpectedly deep knowledge of the Carter-Cash family and what led Johnny and June to guest star on Little House.
