The New York Times has called Rick Prelinger “one of the great, undersung historians of 20th century cinema.” But the Bay Area-based archivist isn't known for books on Chaplin or Bergman. Instead, Rick and partner Megan Prelinger collect the film history of everyday life: home movies, industrial films, studio outtakes and other works that would otherwise be lost or forgotten. The duo may be best known for the free movies they make available through the Internet Archive digital library. And locally, they've gained a following for their “Lost Landscapes” film project, a compilation of historic Bay Area footage from their archives. We'll talk to Rick and Megan about the 18th and latest installment of “Lost Landscapes”, entitled “City and Bay in Motion: Transportation and Communication.” Guests: Rick Prelinger, founder, Prelinger Archives, whose moving image holdings may be found online at archive.org; co-founder, Prelinger Library, a publicly-available collection of historical periodicals, books, print ephemera, maps and government documents Megan Prelinger, co-founder, Prelinger Library; co-director, Prelinger Archives film digitization project. Prelinger is also the author of the books Another Science Fiction: Advertising the Space Race 1957–1962 and Inside the Machine: Art and Invention in the Electronic Age

With breast meat so chunky it could feed the whole family, and drumsticks so small you could carve straight past the bone, the ‘chicken of tomorrow' envisaged by U.S. retailer A&P inspired a national competition that reached its culmination on 24th June, 1948 - and changed the way that the world ate chicken forever. Entrants were submitted whilst still in egg form, hatched at specially built facilities, raised in controlled conditions and on a standard diet, tracked and monitored for weight gain, health and appearance. Then, after 12 weeks, the birds were slaughtered, weighed and judged for their edible meat yield.  In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how the success of the competition led to widespread use of antibiotics in poultry-rearing; gasp at the crowning of ‘Miss Chicken of Tomorrow',  Nancy McGee; and explain how the competition ultimately led to the eradication of over a thousand species…  Further Reading: • ‘How the 'Chicken of Tomorrow' Contest in 1948 Created the Bird We Eat Today' (National Geographic, 2018): https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/article/poultry-food-production-agriculture-mckenna • ‘The Chicken of Tomorrow: Mankind's Quest For A Better Hen' (Flashbak, 2016): https://flashbak.com/the-chicken-of-tomorrow-1948-mankinds-quest-for-a-better-hen-62821/ • ‘The Chicken of Tomorrow' (Prelinger Archives, 1948): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVY68VR_4Bg For bonus material and to support the show, visit Patreon.com/Retrospectors We'll be back on Monday! I said I don't like the term and that's becuase I don't see being 'toughened up' as a positive outcome. If you are forced to change by a situation that is still change by force and if that situation is created by discrimination then that is unacceptable in an equitable society.I attempted to swap the phrase "a double edged sword" with "every rose has its thorns", I am not sure how well that went but perhaps it will catch one " thorns come with roses ? Archivist, educator and filmmaker Rick Prelinger has a remarkable eye for the unexpected value of ephemera. A massive collection of educational and industrial films he collected under the auspices of the Prelinger Archives was acquired by the Library of Congress, and with his wife, Megan Prelinger, he co-founded the Prelinger Library in San Francisco, stuffed with printed material you’d be unlikely to find elsewhere. More recently he’s been working with old home movies — thousands of them, donated or otherwise acquired. This is basically material nobody else wanted, not even the descendants of whoever made them. He’s used it to build a remarkable series of films – one is made of footage from San Francisco, another from Detroit. Old home movies are mostly silent, and he adds no narration or even a score. Instead, he stands on stage at screenings, riffs about the clips, and encourages viewers to chime in from their seats. This actually works: the audience at Prelinger’s screenings are surprisingly vocal. Prelinger’s most recent is the more broadly themed No More Road Trips? Writer Rob Walker spoke with Prelinger about the film and his career in finding joy and insight in media most people eventually throw away.   The stills, below are all from No More Road Trips? (2013), courtesy of Rick Prelinger.  .   Produced by Rob Walker with Shelby El Otmani.

Happy May Day. Across Canada and the world social justice and progressive activists are readying themselves to celebrate solidarity in art, music, words, ideas, and actions. Over the last year or so, the Occupy movement has been one of the largest and most visible actions for solidarity across the globe. In this episode of rabble radio, we thought we'd bring together art and activism by turning the show over to audio artist Sarah Boothroyd. Over the last year or more, Boothroyd has brought together sound, music, and action. It has all wound up in a 28-minute audio piece called rabble rousers. Boothroyd's audio work has been featured by broadcasters, festivals and galleries in over a dozen countries and we're happy to host it at rabble.ca as well. Rabble rousers touches on ethics, justice, democracy, global citizenship, and art. It also explores the notion of protest as a spontaneous installation of improvised music in public space.  It features field recordings from protests around the globe, including many from the occupy movement. Rabble rousers was supported by the Ontario Arts Council. All music is licensed under creative commons licenses. Featured artists included Random Coil, Pleq, Papercutz, Carlos Lemosh, Marcus Fischer, Upsteria, Erstlaub, Aurastore, Aos Crowley(Matt Dean), Pocka (Brad Mitchell), Mattias Ksipert and the Prelinger Archives.
